The essays collected here examine how yield curve developments can help assess the credibility and sustainability of monetary policy strategies and how, in turn, monetary policy actions affect the yield curve.

A homeless man describes his travels, celebrating the companionship of his dog, Lizbeth, and recounting their ongoing struggle to survive on the streets of Austin, Texas, and along California highways.

From Library Journal
A writer of gay erotic fiction, Eighner first attracted the attention of the literary world when the Threepenny Review published "On Dumpster Diving," his essay on how to forage for food, clothing, and other items from dumpsters. That piece is included in this remarkable account of Eighner's three years of homelessness. After quitting his job at a state mental hospital and being evicted from his rented shack, Eighner embarked with his dog, Lizbeth, on an odyssey of hitchhiking from Texas to California and back and of struggling to live on Austin's inhospitable streets. Refusing to panhandle or steal and fiercely attached to Lizbeth (a bed at the Salvation Army would have meant putting her to sleep), he endured numerous misfortunes and indignities. At first, Eighner's wierd prose--stiff, with lots of big 19th-century words--is off-putting, but then his unique voice--part naif innocent, part eccentric fool--has the reader rooting for Eighner and Lizbeth. Strongly recommended.
- Wilda Wil liams, "Library Journal"
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Travels touches on many subjects, but its most dominant quality is good storytelling. Eighner fills his pages with vivid descriptions, perceptive observations, humor, and writing that carries the reader easily over troublesome issues. His theme is homelessness. Since Eighner is knowledgeable, clear-eyed, and sharply articulate about the social welfare system, his book is also about waste, self-righteousness, and generosity in an affluent society. It's a story of poverty, physical stress, and ever-present anxiety, yet his dog Lizbeth, who can't be trusted to guard anything or keep quiet when necessary, brings with her a warm and amusing story of man and pet. It is also, variously, about a homosexual, mistrustful, talented, and difficult man doing his best to set and follow his own well-ruminated and admirable priorities under distressing conditions. Together, the pieces form an unaffected, absorbing narrative. Virginia Dwyer

From Kirkus Reviews
Steinbeck, Eighner isn't--his stiff sentences and three-dollar words betray him--and Lizbeth is no Charley, either. But as a once- homeless gay writer who, with his dog, was down and out from Austin to Hollywood, Eighner has an unusual tale to tell nonetheless. Unfortunately, he's told the best part of it in ``On Dumpster Diving,'' an essay about living out of dumpsters that's included here but that's already reached a wide readership through its original publication in Threepenny Review and reprinting in nine periodicals and seven anthologies. A nifty bit of urban anthropology, it balances street savvy (``Candy...is usually safe if it has not drawn ants'') and pavement philosophy (``Once I was the sort of person who invests objects with sentimental value. Now I no longer have those objects, but I have the sentiments yet''). Here, it's embedded in the fortysomething author's account of his wanderings in the late 80's as he--after quitting a job at a mental hospital--tried to make it as a writer (mostly of gay, often erotic, fiction). The problem is that, as Eighner admits, ``Every life has trivial occurrences, pointless episodes, and unresolved mysteries, but a homeless life has...virtually nothing else.'' What's offered here, though, is mostly minutiae of Eighner's own homeless life: hunting for food, shelter, and rides; befriending this vagabond and that; gay couplings. Occasionally, Eighner soapboxes (e.g., contending that the number of homeless addicts is ``greatly overestimated'') or injects minor drama into his yarn (e.g., Lizbeth's capture by a dogcatcher--an incident that reveals cracks in the author's facade when he says that it allowed him to understand mass vengeance killings by lone gunmen). But for the most part, Eighner's story is a tedious one, told with little style. A more reliable memoir of homeless life than Joe Homeless's My Life on the Streets (1992)--but less revealing and gripping than Jennifer Toth's The Mole People (p. 924). -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. A different view of homelessness
By Tanya Griffin
The author is very intelligent and the book is well written although at times it drags a bit. His information on his view of the Texas social service network; requirements, policies and the role of social workers made me cringe more than once. Also being in the social service field myself I have looked at my career and role in helping others in another light after reading this. All and all it was a fairly good memoir. I could have done without some of the more graphic sexual references in the book personally and can't understand even after reading why the author was unable to hold a job to obtain permanent housing. He is a bit of an eccentric individual I suppose, but he does make stong points in how he thinks society tries to force the homeless into a certain set group. Believing that assisting them in a set universal manner depending on said group with absolve the agency in the event that an individual does not succeed in their program due to inabliity to meet program guidelines. I would be very interested to know if the author the author's current living conditions.

Three Years of Homelessness & Hitch-hiking with a Beloved Dog
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
This is an entertaining memoir of Lars Eighner's three years of mixed homelessness and hitch-hiking with his dog, Lizbeth. Mr. Eighner has a way of capturing the true craziness and Catch-22's of our welfare system. His characterizations, internal reflection and his take on the events around him are eccentric and unique.

One of his takes on the Texas welfare system is as follows. It had me in stitches:

"In Texas, a person can not qualify for food stamps unless he or she does not really need them. A person who truly needs food stamps can not be eligible to receive them. To get food stamps, a person must have all to him or herself a functioning kitchen; if the kitchen is shared, then all who share the kitchen must, as a group, qualify for food stamps. To prove that you have the kitchen, you must have a rent receipt, which opens the question of where you got the money to pay the rent. If you can not pay the rent then you must get a written statement from the landlord that he allows you to live rent-free, which statement the landlord will not give you if he is properly advised, because it prejudices his case in the event he wants to collect back rent or to evict you for non-payment."

This book is comprised of three year's of Mr. Eighner's anecdotes of dumpster diving, his attempts at publishing is pornographic writing, crazy drivers who pick him up hitch-hiking, crazy friends and tragic situations. The anecdotes are enlightening, sardonic and humorous. Finally, Mr. Eighner is able to sell enough of his writing (gay porn) to get off the streets - at least for a while.

I highly recommend this book.

A suprisingly engaging account of homelessness
By A Customer
I don't often read non-fiction, but I was enchanted by Travels with Lizbeth by Lars Eighner. It's about three
years in the life of a homeless man and his dog. Before being on the streets he was a writer/mental health
worker (he wrote gay porn, among other things, to make money). His style is really remarkable-mannered
and wry. It's as though he were educated at Oxford and one day found himself on the streets of Austin, TX
without any prospects to speak of. His adventures are poignant, funny, tragic, and even occasionally sexy.
You'll walk away with an appreciation for a category of homelessness, the situationally homeless, that often
gets overlooked. We're always quick to categorize people on the streets as either: substance abusers, mentally
ill, or simply homeless by choice. But some people just lose it. Eighner loses it, but ultimately makes the
most of it. When I finished the book, I just wanted to send him money in case his luck had changed again.

Girl Walking Backwards, by Bett Williams

Skye wants what all teenagers want--to survive high school. She lives in Southern California, though, which is making that difficult. Her mother has fallen victim to the pseudo-New Age culture and insists on dragging her to consciousness-raising workshops and hypnotists. As if this weren't difficult enough, Skye falls in love with Jessica, a troubled gothic punk girl who cuts herself regularly with sharp objects. When she finds her boyfriend having sex with Jessica in a bathroom stall at a rave, her romantic illusions collapse and she has to face the fact that she's been running away from her mother's insanity. Right when things look their worst though, Skye is helped by Mol, a pagan who becomes her true friend, and Lorri, a graceful volelyball player with whom she finds real love. From them she learns how to feel authentic emotions in a culture of poseurs and New Age charlatans. In this anti-coming-of-age novel, where growing up is irrelevant, this is the best gift of all.

Damn good book!
By GLBT
The best writing seems like it was almost effortless... that's certainly the case here. The book reads so smoothly and so quickly, it feels as though it was written in one night.
Skye, a fifteen year-old girl who's dealing with a ton of stuff all at once, is a great character. She's tough enough to earn our admiration, but human enough to make you wince every time something bad happens to her. Through her, the book deals with issues of self-mutilation, discovering one's own sexuality, New Age cultism, drugs, friendship, sex, and all the usual highlights of being 15. This is no After School Special, though, and the book does not preach to the reader or try to force all-encompassing conclusions upon complex issues. The author is confident enough (and wise enough) to let the reader reach his/her own conclusions. She also avoids the "easy epiphany" pitfall. This book has no easy answers.
More than anything, though, this is a fun book. That's largely because Skye, though fallible, is such a likable character.
I would recommend this book especially for anyone in junior high school or high school, although it's perfectly suitable for adults as well. Writers like Judy Bloom, though wonderful in their own way, fail to address truly contemporary themes for teenagers. This book fills that void.
Final comment: I very much appreciated that the whole homosexual/heterosexual thing was addressed so realistically. There may be some people for whom it's a simple yes/no dichotomy, but most people I knew back in high school weren't nearly so one-way-or-the-other. It's nice to read a book about a lesbian who doesn't think of herself as "a lesbian" but rather as herself. She's Skye. Who she sleeps with (or wants to sleep with) is only one small part of who she is.
Really, really good stuff.

STUNNING DEBUT
By A. Ross
Am I the only man who read this book?... This is pretty stunning stuff from a first-time novelist: beautiful but grounded prose, deep and believable characterizations, and a deft handling of complicated coming-of-age issues. On the other hand, first novels (and films) are often about those things closest to the author's heart and experience, so we'll wait to see what Williams comes up with next before proclaiming her the voice of a new generation... The book is about Skye, a high school senior in Santa Barbara trying to deal with a new school, making new friends, her insane New Age-addict mother, and her own sexuality. Williams juggles these along with the typical teenage traumas of parties, a controlling parent, an absent parent, and an out-of-control friend. It's a complex journey into Skye's head, and even though much of the book concerns her lesbianism, it never draws attention to itself. Williams' prose floats and flows but never lifts off into the realm of mawkishness. Deserves a wide readership.

Entertaining, but obviously by a very young writer
By Elizabeth Welch
I enjoyed this novel a great deal. It was entertaining and engrossing, sometimes erotic. As a teenager myself (16) I can relate less to the turbulant sex-and-drug-drenched world the author depicts, and more to her style of writing. Bett Williams is obviously an extremely talented writer (some selections of her prose are astoundingly poignant) but she also shares the self-absorbed dramatization of everything in her writing that is characteristic of youth. Each "gothic" character was depicted as achingly beautiful, each description of each outfit and eyeliner described as if it were art in it's highest form, each syllable uttered by each character took on almost too much meaning. While suitable for perhaps the description of Jessica because the main character is so obsessed with her, it becomes almost tiring to keep reading about these 'profoundly' beautiful people. And cynic that I am, I never imagine them in my head as quite as beautiful or romantic as Williams probably would like me to; instead I imagine that they like to think of themselves in such a way. The book gets better farther along, and I was surprised to find a great deal of depth in Skye by the end. (Who's very name smacks of a teenager's main character) However, with mention of Doc Martins and goths, it will not be long before this book will become extremely dated and almost cringely-embarrassing to read. (it's never fun to read how self-important we are in our youth) However, read it. It's enjoyable and entertaining, and although it doesn't reach the level of depth I think it strove for, I am positive that Bett Williams is capable of such a novel in the future.

Great Map and Great Resource
By eulalia brooks
I purchased this map based on the London version ... and it didn't disappoint. If you need a solid lay of the land (hotels, emergency numbers, resturants, et al) with a transportation and street map this is a great buy. However, if you are thinking about using the map for driving .... not a good look (as mentioned the map will omit smaller streets) or if you want to go to the outer arrondissements (neighborhoods) then you will want a more robust guide book.

How Shall We Tell Each Other of the Poet?: The Life and Writing of Muriel RukeyserFrom Palgrave Macmillan

Muriel Rukeyser, the late poet, journalist, translator, biographer, pilot, and social activist, has been described as an "American Genius" and our "20th-century Whitman." Anne Sexton and Erica Jong both referred to Muriel Rukeyser as "the Mother of Everyone." To read her collected work is to track American history through the century and to question with her the particular nature of the American imagination. Rukeyser began publishing in the 1930s, writing about Sacco and Vanzetti, the Scottsboro boys, and the Popular Front’s stand against fascism, insisting always on the link between public subjects and the personal life. Until she died in 1980 at the age of 66, she persisted in bringing the events of the world into poetry, and poetry into the world. Her writing stretches the American poetic imagination, indeed the very definitions of American poetry, and guarantees her place in twentieth-century American literature. "How Shall We Teach Each Other of the Poet?" brings together the voices of those who have been challenged by the complexity and richness of Rukeyser’s poems: former friends, colleagues, editors, and students reflecting on their personal knowledge of the poet; contemporary poets probing the significance of Rukeyser as one who influenced their own poetry, and scholars offering new interpretations of her work.

From Library Journal
Even if Muriel Rukeyser never attained the status of Whitman or Dickinson, the poets Adrienne Rich compares her to in one of these essays, she was an American original. She was less a marquee poet than a force of nature, an imposing woman who gave herself to a variety of aesthetic positions, political causes, and passionate friendships and antagonisms. (Gerald Stern recalls being taunted by an audience member when he and Rukeyser read together once and starting to defend himself by saying, "I don't want to be mean," only to hear Rukeyser whisper, "Be mean, be mean.") Herzog and Kaufman, English professors at West Chester University and the University of Utah, respectively, gather writings by 37 Rukeyser fans; a number of these pieces are poems, the most luminous of which is Richard Howard's "A Sibyl of 1979," in which he describes being given a computer that had baffled Rukeyser, finding in it some draft phrases she had left there, and making them into his own tribute to her. From Booklist
Rukeyser (1913^-80) was shunned by the academy for the freedom of her thinking, her humanitarianism, and her unabashedly Whitmanesque poetic voice. As Denise Levertov, one of the nearly 40 poets and literary scholars whose considerations of and tributes to Rukeyser are collected here, writes, Rukeyser "consistently fused lyricism and overt social and political concern." Reginald Gibbons, another insightful admirer, observes that "Rukeyser aimed not at grace but at inquiry and witness and re-imagining." A writer, scholar, single parent, pilot, and activist, Rukeyser linked art to politics and science, and glided with ease from poetry to biography to children's books to translation to literary criticism, a fluidity that endeared her to poets but vexed critics and led to a vanishing of her works like that of an endangered species. But editors Herzog and Kaufman and contributors such as Gerald Stern, Adrienne Rich, and Richard Howard have set out to redress this neglect, and Rukeyser does, indeed, emerge from these pages, vibrant, defiant, gifted, and embracing. Donna Seaman

inspiring chronicle of an inspiring life
By Liza
I should preface this by telling you that I am fanatically devoted to Muriel Rukeyser's work and so may present a somewhat extreme perspective. As a high-schooler, it is one of my deepest hopes that my generation will awaken to this amazing and underappreciated woman. As Muriel Rukeyser's poems are monuments, so is her life itself. She was a tremendous force for artistic vision and social conscience. As a reflection of such a life, this book could hardly go wrong, and it is indeed intensely thought-provoking and inspiring.
I found the organization of the book to be effective on the whole. Rather than a single narrative, it is a collection of writings from a range of people including Adrienne Rich, and Muriel Rukeyser's son, William Rukeyser. It's divided into five parts: 1. Poetics and Vision; 2. Activism and Teaching; 3. The Body, Feminist Critique, and the Poet as Mother; 4. Poetry of Witness; 5. Remembering Muriel Rukeyser. For the most part the divisions seemed somewhat arbitrary, but of course dividing a life into such categories is a near impossible task. I enjoyed the mix of literary critique with personal stories. There were also a surprisingly large number of poems about/inspired by Muriel Rukeyser, and these were of mixed quality. On the whole, the book admittedly had it's hits and it's misses, but it was absolutely worth it for the hits. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about Muriel Rukeyser (and that should, of course, be everyone).

There is a lot to learn in this portrayal of a Poet
By BfloBen
If you are not that familiar with the work of Muriel Rukeyser (and I am not) you have lots to learn about what you missed. The essays individually portray aspects of the poet and collectively are a beautiful chorus of mixed voices that all share in common a deep reverence for her work and life. I add myself as a late arriving admirer of this formidable artist and activist.

Chapter One
Jueves, 7 de febrero

Bienvenidos a mi cuarto amarillo y lleno de adornos. Infantil e inmaduro.

Detesto a esa perra y detesto a Génova.

Ava Gardner:

"The most complete and engrossing biography yet of this exotic Southern girl...Excellent."―Liz Smith

She was the sex symbol who dazzled all the other sex symbols. She was the temptress who drove Frank Sinatra to the brink of suicide and haunted him to the end of his life. Ernest Hemingway saved one of her kidney stones as a sacred memento, and Howard Hughes begged her to marry him―but she knocked out his front teeth instead.

She was one of the great icons in Hollywood history―star of The Killers, The Barefoot Contessa, and The Night of the Iguana―and one of the few whose actual life was grander and more colorful than any movie. Her jaw-dropping beauty, charismatic presence, and fabulous, scandalous adventures fueled the legend of Ava Gardner―Hollywood's most glamorous, restless and uninhibited star.

"A seductive book."―The New York Times

"Deliciously entertaining."―Publishers Weekly

"Irresistible and finally heartbreaking."―The Newark Star-Ledger

"Super."―USA Today

In this acclaimed first full biography of Gardner, Lee Server recreates―with great style and vivid detail―the actress's life, from her beginnings as a barefoot North Carolina farm girl to her heady days as a Hollywood goddess. He paints the full spectacle of her tumultuous private life―including her string of failed marriages to Mickey Rooney, Sinatra and Artie Shaw―and Gardner's lifelong search for adventure and love.

Ava Gardner: "Love is Nothing" is both an exceptional work of biography and a richly entertaining read.

From Publishers Weekly
At the ripe old age of 32, having collected three ex-husbands-Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and Frank Sinatra-Ava Gardner waxed introspective: "I still believe the most important thing in life is to be loved." Server's (Baby, I Don't Care) deliciously entertaining tome bursts with Hollywood dish and Oscar-worthy dialogue and is written in a crackling style that reads like great pulp. "Love became her terrible habit," he writes, "something hopeless to resist, impossible to get right." A Tobacco Road urchin turned "statue of Venus sprung to succulent life," Gardner ditched her secretarial aspirations and started at MGM in the early '40s as a contract actress earning $50 a week. She became an international star, drawing huge crowds on both sides of the Atlantic. But life wasn't always sweet for the gorgeous star of Show Boat and The Barefoot Contessa; her steamy affair and marriage to Sinatra ranks among the most notorious of Hollywood love stories. Gardner's career, hard drinking and screen-worthy love affairs are all chronicled in Server's page-turner prose, doing justice to one of cinema's most beautiful faces.

From Booklist
Server follows his superb biography of Robert Mitchum (Baby I Don't Care, 2001) with the life of another midcentury movie icon: Ava Gardner. Gardner's rise from North Carolina tobacco country to Hollywood superstardom began when an MGM talent scout spotted her picture in the window of a photographer's studio. It's a Cinderella story, to be sure, but Server gives us the unexpurgated version, complete with Gardner's Mitchum-like credentials for booze consumption, rugged individualism, and sexual appetite (marriages to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra and affairs with pretty much everyone else). And then there was her beauty--in interviews with dozens of stars, the message is the same: no one ever looked better than Ava Gardner. This is also a story of the studio system, and Gardner was one of its most notable victims, ill-used throughout her career, forced to do bad movies and forced to watch her good movies decimated in the cutting room. Server capably assesses the hits and misses, languishing on those electric moments when the camera caught the "feline sprawl of her exquisite body." A no-holds-barred view of a larger-than-life star. The beautiful contessa.
By Nancy A. Kelly
Lovely Ava! Lee Server pulled no punches when he researched for this biography; he reveals Ava's turmoils, trials, pains and addictions but doesn't overlook her gregariousness, generosity and sweetness. Mr. Server must have spent hours and hours interviewing the people who knew Ava best.
If you have a soft spot in your heart for the disservice paid to her when she was denied the right to sing those lovely tunes in Show Boat, you'll appreciate the fact that she did get to sing them to our troops. You can also hear her sing them on You Tube, much better than the 'hired' singer that did the voice over.
Ava was much underrated as an actress. Perhaps she might have not had such a turbulent personal life if she had been given better roles, though the parts she did play were done beautifully. She was a much loved lady by all those, men and women alike, who worked with her. T
This is a well written biography. Kudos to Lee Server.

An Honest Life
By Mcgivern Owen L
This reviewer was already familiar with author Server's work, having read "Baby, I Don't Care"-the bio of Robert Mitchum. The view from here was that RM was such a negative character that the story generated little interest. But Ava Gardner is the polar opposite, as is her bio. One warms to her personality almost immediately. AG is portrayed as a humane and true- to- life person throughout. Her career had its ups and downs but the tone of LIN is consistently positive. "Love is Nothing" faithfully follows the turbulent, zesty, even hedonistic life of the late actress in virtual chronological order. The lady danced on a few tables in her life! It offers a virtual kaleidoscope of Hollywood of the 40s through the 80s. AG appeared in some 70 films in that span, some unaccredited. The pages are filed with gossip and tidbits. Stars, lovers, husbands, directors, studio heads, friends and producers fly by. Two names stood out to this reader. One was Frank Sinatra, who AG divorced but never completely disengaged from. The other is George C Scott, portrayed as simply a nut case. Maybe "Patton" was truer to life than many knew. One negative aspect of AG's life is the old studio system. MGM, it appears, did not serve Ava well. This review used the word "gossip" above but the reader should have confidence in what s (he) reads. Author Server includes 33 pages offend notes and bibliography. This reviewer has always been curious about AG's role -if any- in helping Frank Sinatra land his key role in "From Here to Eternity". Server's exclusion leads one to suspect that AG had no part. "Love is Nothing" is fully recommended to readers desiring an accurate look at the old the studio dominated star system that is gone forever.

Beautiful and self destructive woman
By L. Crew
Really enjoyed this book, found it well written and well researched. She was lovely woman to look at, but she destroyed herself with her excesses and probably destroyed others in the process.
The book should have been called 'Destroying Beauty'. I don't think she really thought love was nothing, I think she must have thought it was everything and aside from her time with Sinatra, she never quite found it. She turned to booze for solace like so many others have, before and since.

Under a Hoodoo Moon: The Life of the Night Tripper, by Mac Rebennack, Jack Rummel

Under a Hoodoo Moon is one of rock's most original and infectious autobiographies. In its pages, Dr. John, the alchemist of New Orleans psychedelic funk, tells his story, and what a story it is: of four decades on the road, on the charts, in and out of trouble, but always steeped in the piano-based soulful grind of New Orleans rhythmn & blues of which he is the acknolwedged high guru. From childhood as a prodigal prodigy among 1950s legends from Little Richard and Fats Domino to sesssions with the Rolling Stones and the Band; from recording studio to juke joint to penitentiary to world tours; from Mac Rebennack to Dr. John the Night Tripper, this is the testament of our funkiest rock storyteller. Full of wit and wordplay, tales of hoodoo saints and high-living sinners, Under a Hoodoo Moon casts a spell as hard to resist as Mardi Gras itself.

From Publishers Weekly
As much a tribute to Rebennack's native New Orleans and its vibrant music scene as it is an autobiography, this candid book provides an inside look at the drug-using, hell-raising lifestyle adopted by many rock musicians. Writing in a loose, slangy style with freelancer Rummel, Rebennack, whose albums as Dr. John ( Gris Gris ; Gumbo ) helped popularize the distinctively Cajun-influenced music that is now a hallmark of the New Orleans sound, presents a compelling picture of his hometown as a place of enormous musical energy and excitement. We read of all-night jam sessions, quirky local characters and Voodoo rituals (the sobriquet Dr. John is borrowed from an early Voodoo master). Influenced by such New Orleans greats as James Booker and Professor Longhair, Rebennack hit the road with his first band when he was 16 and, because of narcotics, soon found himself in trouble with the law. He is oddly blase about drugs and tries so hard to maintain his cool-cat rock 'n' roll persona that he comes across more as a caricature than as a real person. The portrait of Crescent City's music scene, by contrast, has depth. Photos not seen by PW. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Rebennack, a.k.a. Dr. John the Night Tripper, was born in New Orleans in 1940. In his early teens he played hooky from Catholic school in order to pitch songs to Little Richard and Art Neville. By the age of 16, he had recorded an album of original songs and developed a heroin habit. Over the next six years, he honed his craft playing for strippers, pimps, junkies, and even a pickpocketing monkey. When the infamous Jim Garrison cleaned up the city in 1962, Mac took a two-year sabbatical at a federal prison in Fort Worth. Upon his release, he headed for California, where his prodigious session work led to his solo career as Dr. John, one of the Sixties' most outrageous and creative performers. Today, four Grammy Awards later and his drug problems behind him, he's still rocking. This no-holds-barred autobiography by the hippest, "fonkiest" cat to come down the musical turnpike is essential for music libraries.

From Booklist
Musician Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John, is the embodiment of New Orleans culture, and his colorful autobiography serves as a virtual history of the city's music from the 1950s on. As a teenager, Rebennack had already launched a successful career as a guitarist when his finger was nearly shot off, forcing him to switch to piano. Eventually, he landed in L.A., where he survived on session work until in 1967 his career as a headliner took off when he created the stage persona Dr. John the Night Tripper, a sort of psychedelic voodoo king. This book ends with Rebennack's return to New Orleans to record his most recent album, a tribute to the city's musical history. Some of its most engaging passages are recollections of musicians Rebennack learned from and played with; most notable among them is the affectionate tribute to his musical godfather, Professor Longhair. Like many such memoirs, the story loses a bit of its drive once its subject begins to achieve commercial success, but Rebennack's distinctive "N'Owleans" patois, which he and Rummel capture to perfection, helps sustain interest throughout. Insights into the post-war New Orleans music scene
By A. Fogey
I bought this book because I had heard a series of interviews with Mac (on [...]) made during the research for the book. The book is amazingly true to the interviews. The guy can talk. If I hadn't heard the interviews I might have been turned off by the idiosyncrasies of spelling and language, like fonk instead of funk.

To me, it provided a very absorbing inside look at the post-war New Orleans music scene. Man, that was tough: cut-throat competition for work, ubiquitous drugs, and significant violence. It was interesting to read about how so many people kept such remarkable focus on improving as musicians in the business. The discussions of the LA recording scene were interesting too.

For New Orleans music fans
By Javier Fernandez
I have read this book twice, not only because I like Dr.John's music, but also because I love the city of New Orleans and its cultural heritage. This book is more than just a musical biography; it's a chronicle of the Crescent City's music scene since the 50's and a huge source of musical information. Of course, Dr. John's biography and musical career is the main subject of the book and it will live up to your expectations. His recollections of his early career, Cosimo Matassa, Professor Longhair, Huey Piano Smith, Fats Domino, James Booker, and many more quoted in the book are priceless. His more recent musical experiences with big names such as Frank Zappa, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Van Morrison or Eric Clapton are remarkable too. On the contrary to many other musical biographies, there are not any gossips in this one, just music facts. Dr. John reviews some of his own recordings and includes some of the lyrics. There is also a chapter dedicated to the voodoo religion.

Co-written with author Jack Rummel, the book even works as a travel guidebook to the city. In one of my visits to the Big Easy after reading the book, I found places and sightseeings mentioned in it that I wouldn't find in any other guidebook. Highly recommended.

What a life!
By MamaRoux Jax
This book will give you a lot of insight to the wild web woven around and by Mac Rebennack. You'll learn more, and maybe to much, about his life, which will open your eyes to the lyrics he's written over the years and in what mental and physical condition he was in during those times. I've been a fan of Dr. John for as long as I can remember, but this book just amazed me! As much as I though I knew, I was wrong. His love of music got his soul in trouble with drugs and his fans were the ones who benefitted from his pain and suffering. He's grown, learned and bloomed into a clear, clean, insightful man. This book made me cry to think of all he went through to get to where he is today. I am lucky enough to own an autographed first edition. It is one of my most prized posessions. If you love New Orleans, Fonk, Blues, and Swampadelic music you MUST read this book!
