The Breaker: The Novel Behind Breaker Morant, by Kit Denton

There was a Breaker Morant - he was executed at Pietersburg on 27 February 1902. His crime? Wilful murder of civilians. Yet to this day his guilt remains in doubt. Kit Denton's novel, The Breaker, does more than recount the facts and mystery surrounding Morant's death sentence. Full of action and set in three continents, it covers the entire range of the Breaker's activities. We see him as a champion horseman, a likeable larrikin, a popular balladist. We see him in love and in war. Then we see him face the firing squad that will end his life. Was he a cold-blooded killer or a scapegoat?

A novel that looks at the miscarriage of justice that happened to some soldiers in the time of the Boer War. Or, again, you shouldn't get caught shagging the superior officer's woman, or that can mean very very bad things.

An interesting look at a period of military history.

This book is an exploration of interaction between humans, computers and automated machines and why they frequently go awry, sometimes with disastrous consequences. The book lays out a clear foundation for evaluating interactions between users and machines, showing the reader how to describe, analyze and quickly identify potential design problems. The insights and methodologies provided allow the reader to understand the root human-interaction problems in modern systems, improve the usability of new user interfaces, and, the author hopes, have a say in the design of the highly automated systems of the future.

Review

"An entertaining and thought-provoking text on problems with many existing machine interfaces, from simple lamps to complex aircraft displays. Using the dangerous malfunction of the computer HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey as a stepping-off point, Degani clearly delineates the differences between machine and human models of tasks and processes, points out where communication disconnects can occur, and describes design solutions to prevent such errors...of interest to educated lay readers as well as engineers and aviators." - Library Journal

"Asaf Degani is one of the leading experts on the impact of computer automation on human beings. In Taming Hal, he has written a book that is full of clear and cogent examples that show why automation can frequently bewilder, frustrate, and sometimes even harm us - from the frustrations caused by VCRs to the tragic shooting down of 269 people on Korean Airlines 007. Even more importantly, he provides solutions by showing how automation could be designed to serve our human needs and capabilities, thereby improving the quality of all of our lives." - Kim J. Vicente, Professor of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, University of Toronto, and author of The Human Factor: Revolutionizing the Way People Live With Technology

"Automation is no longer an esoteric buzzword for the scientific community, but is now a common attribute of most everyday products and environments. This book provides a riveting account of how automation influences our daily lives and demonstrates why some automated systems produce undesirable human experiences, from minor inconveniences to human tragedy. Degani has produced the most comprehensive automation resource to date, and has masterfully afforded casual readers, students, and professional automation researchers and designers alike with a new found ability to understand, model and solve automation design problems." - Dr. Anthony D. Andre, Founding Principal of Interface Analysis Associates and Adjunct Professor of Human Factors/Ergonomics, San Jose State University

"Degani makes a number of critical points about human-system interface

design, and does it with a light, easy-to-read manner with

compelling examples." - Thomas B. Sheridan, Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

"Degani has a wonderful knack for making complex topics simple. This book is a wonderful start for all those who wish to understand the complexities of everyday technology. Along the way, we finally understand how a Korean airliner could have strayed so much that the Soviets shot it down, thinking it a spy plane, how an over-intelligent navigation system led a cruise ship to run aground, and even why the alarm clock so carefully set the night before fails in the morning." - Don Norman, Nielsen Norman Group, Author of Emotional Design and The Design of Everyday Things

About the Author
ASAF DEGANI is a computer scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. He is the lead scientist on the Human Automation Theory project, which is part of NASA's long-term research and technology effort.

An instructive read
By Marissa Carter
Personally, I have found on many instances, a baffling logic concerning the way machine-human interfaces operate, thus it came as a pleasant surprise to read Asaf Degani's book: Taming HAL. Starting with relatively simple devices, such as portable phones and bedside alarms, Dr. Degani walks us through the logical pathways that we expect, what the designer created, and ultimately how the machine behaves when interacting with the user. The result, often, is not a pretty picture: unexpected outcomes.
Yet, as Degani points out, many of these systems had flawed logic rules built into them by designers that neglected predominate stereotypical or cultural mores that most individuals expect of how systems should operate. Moreover, the presentation of machine modes frequently beguiles the user into thinking the device is operating in one fashion, whereas in reality it is functioning in another. Using logic diagrams, Degani analyses a variety of simple and complex systems and demonstrates that the end-result can range from the annoying to the deadly.
Some of the case studies will astound the reader: for example, the grounding of the luxury cruise liner Royal Majesty on the shoals of Nantucket. However, these bizarre tales become more comprehensible when one sees that the professionals entrusted with operation of the vessels in question failed to understand the true nature of the automatic systems that were supposed to guide and assist them. Understandably, Degani focuses much attention on aircraft systems (his specialty), and I would have liked to see more examples in the medical and computer fields, but the book contains extremely useful information to both laypersons and professionals alike, and is a great read.

Taming more than just HAL
By Leonid Shklar
I have finished reading TAMING HAL and here's a short description of my experience: The book is well-structured--from simple examples to greater generalizations, with very smooth transitions. Secondly, it is very well written, with some passages providing more excitement and suspense than an average Tom Clancy chapter. I definitely had a great time reading it and I feel that most people will do too. It is very easy to read and understand but very informative at the same time. The last chapter has a great collection of guidelines that are applicable in many technical areas beyond human-machine interface design. To sum up my reading of this book--I learned a lot and enjoyed it greatly.

Tells the story of the Japanese spy ring operations during World War II. Details of these rings have been secret since the war, but revealing documents from the American National Archives now show how Japan manipulated a neutral country's diplomatic missions abroad to destroy the Allies.

From Publishers Weekly
Australian writer Matthews describes how the Japanese infiltrated agents into Allied and neutral countries through Spanish embassies, inflicting serious damage on the Allied war effort by supplying information to Tokyo about shipping and troop movements. He explains why Spanish foreign minister Ramon Suner (the brother-in-law of dictator Francisco Franco) encouraged the establishment of Japanese espionage rings on Spanish soil, then traces the deterioration of Spanish-Japanese relations after the Imperial Army began mistreating Catholics and Spanish nationals in the Philippines. In his survey of Japanese espionage activity during WW II, Matthews includes Japanese-American fishing fleets based in California ports, recounting how they were trained to report ship traffic, take soundings and scout landing sites for a proposed invasion of the West Coast. Throughout the war, U.S. counterintelligence authorities intercepted and decrypted top-secret messages between the Tokyo Foreign Office and various embassies. Extended quotes from these "Magic Summaries"--as the decoded messages were called--form the core of Matthews's tersely informative study, which will be of interest to espionage buffs. Photos.

From Library Journal
This work relates the story of Japanese espionage and spy activities during World War II. In particular, it details the activities of the Japanese spy network TO, which functioned through Japanese embassies and consulates in a number of European and South American countries. Although most of the records of this organization's activities were destroyed by order of the Japanese government at the end of the war, information concerning them continues to exist in the form of decrypted messages gathered by U.S. counterintelligence forces during wartime. These reports, known as " Magic Summaries," allowed U.S. and other Allied authorities to obtain important information regarding Axis military operations without revealing to the enemy that it had broken its code. Matthews uses these now declassified documents to tell his story. Overall, the work is well researched and well written, making fascinating reading for those interested in wartime espionage and related subjects.
- Scott Wright, Univ. of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn.

From Kirkus Reviews
A plodding account of one of the most fascinating of WW II stories--how Japan sought to spy on the Allies through neutral countries. Most notable among the points of entry for Japanese spy rings were the embassies and consulates of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. The spy network (code-named TO) provided details on such matters as Allied manufacturing, morale, and troop and convoy movements. Eventually, the US intercepted and decoded these reports, enabling the Allies to crack spy rings operating on their shores and helping them to anticipate major military maneuvers (e.g., Admiral Chester Nimitz knew the Japanese order of battle at the Battle of Midway). These thousands of once top-secret ``Magic'' summaries, many only recently declassified, form the backbone of this history (first published in Great Britain) by Welsh-born Matthews, who now lives in Australia. Matthews discusses how these operations were set up, who its operatives were, how the network was tested, and how it only ceased operations three months after the dropping of the atomic bomb. The author rightly believes that these intercepts contain a dramatic story. But, addicted to unbroken, verbatim transcriptions of the reports, he provides neither coherent explanation of the events' significance nor adequate description of personalities. He alleges, for instance, that the Japanese worked with African-American groups, including the NAACP, to establish espionage and sabotage operations, but he fails to cite sources for such charges or to describe how these operations were set up. He also mentions a particularly hair- raising story about how the Japanese, having discovered the defection of a diplomat/espionage agent in Stockholm, plotted to have him murdered--without describing the denouement of the tale! Moreover, the account is sometimes marred by lazy editing (e.g., then Secretary of State Cordell Hull is referred to as the undersecretary of state). This is compelling material worthy of treatment by Gordon Prange or Len Deighton, but it's told here by a sloppy researcher with poor narrative gifts. They were mistreating the South American diplomats in Hong Kong after Japan invaded and took over. They misdirected and delayed one diplomat so that hospitals with staff and empty beds were not available to him until it was too late to save his little girl.

Given their presence in Spain and Portugal as well as South America, it must have felt justified to the Americans that they had interned the South American Japanese immigrants in America and at the end of the war, sent them to Japan instead of South America.

A murdered derelict . . . Huford Peck slept on the cold, hard floor of Falls City's abandoned power plant, amidst the lifetime of discarded junk he collected. When his naked body turns up along the banks of the Missouri River, it seems the result of another senseless act of brutality. But what secrets did the mysterious vagabond hide? His mutilated corpse may hold the key to a deadly puzzle.A fifteen-year-old boy . . . From Publishers Weekly
Wiltse's routine suspense yarn is a far cry, both geographically and dramatically, from his previous novel, the appropriately titled Blown Away, which featured a vibrant cast and a colorful New York City setting. The backdrop here is Falls City Nebr., a "scratch on the Great Plains with a population of a mere five thousand people," where Secret Service agent and Falls City native Billy Tree is recovering from a botched operation that left his partner dead and Billy severely traumatized. Settling in with his sister, Kath, Billy once again encounters his old friends and foes all straight out of central casting. Pat Kunkel, the town's crusty sheriff, resumes his paternal friendship with Billy, who rekindles his not-quite-consummated affair with high school sweetheart, Joan, who's divorced from abusive Duane. Then there's Kath's drunken husband ("Peripatetic Stu, as Billy called him") and Huford Peck, the town's simpleminded hobo. The list goes on. It takes Billy no time at all to realize that this Norman Rockwellesque burg has surprise a seamy underbelly. But when a shooting takes place at the local high school, the investigation seems no more pressing than the townsfolk's assorted peccadilloes. Though Billy's renewed relationship with Joan produces a few affecting moments, it's difficult overall to empathize with him. His mocking self-pity quickly wears thin, as does his habit of assuming an Irish brogue (homage to his ancestry) in times of stress. And the novel's set pieces action scenes making vivid use of the local landscape are undercut by lackadaisical pacing. Wiltse's frequently florid prose and his characters' homespun philosophizing are a further hindrance "Do you think it's just cornfields and a deranged boy with a gun? There are lives being lived here, Billy." Lives, maybe, but not a whole lot of life.

From Booklist
You'll never look at a grain silo in the same way after reading this novel. Wiltse injects his small-town Nebraska setting with Hitchcockian terror: a cornfield, a school yard, even pieces of farm equipment all move from ordinary to horrific in the blink of an eye. Agent Billy Tree, who investigated the homes of crackpots as part of pre-event security for the Secret Service, has returned to his hometown of Falls City, Nebraska, to recover from physical injuries and his deep shame after his partner was killed on a house search. Billy wants nothing more than to hole up at his sister's home, watching the road and replaying the scene where he failed his partner. But the plight of his old girlfriend and her son, victims of harrowing psychological abuse from the ex-husband, forces Billy to rejoin life. And when a school shooting wounds his girlfriend and kills others, Billy can no longer ignore the sheriff's pleas to help him investigate. What Billy discovers is that the seemingly pure midwestern small town harbors big-time vices. What Billy feels is still shame, skidding over into cowardice and increasing the overall tension. The book's climactic scene, played out in a grain silo, has to be one of recent fiction's most terrifying. Heartland delivers a wrenching psychological portrait along with blood pressure-raising suspense. Connie Fletcher

Wiltse is back and he is hot!
By JM
After a hiatus that lasted much longer than any of us thought we could endure, David Wiltse has finally brought us a new book. While Heartland does not feature John Becker, it has a protagonist that will seem familiar in many ways. After enduring a terrifying standoff in which his partner was killed, Secret Service agent Billy Tree retreats to his boyhood town of Falls City, Nebraska to re-evaluate his life. An Irish-American who often reverts to a thick Irish brogue, Billy Tree is viewed as something of an outsider, even though the townspeople of this middle American, Small Town USA grew up with him.
The Heartland of America, with it's silos and pick-up trucks is a far cry from the sophisticated flavor we tend to associate with Wiltse's works. It is the perfect setting, however, for Billy Tree, who seems to be existing throughout this story as a man with one foot in each world.
The simplicity of life in Falls City Nebraska paints a jarring contrast to the complexity of the internal war Billy Tree is fighting. When he is called upon to aid the Sheriff in a murder investigation, Billy is forced to face demons he has been fighting to suppress. Readers of Wiltse, who will find this a familiar theme, will not be disappointed in the ease with which the author reintroduces this trait in the form of a new character. If you liked John Becker, you will love Billy Tree. And for those who are wondering if Wiltse has maintained his talent for that torridly sexual encounter his protagonist is capable of bringing to the fore, the answer is a resounding, "Yes!".
Heartland is a book written with the intensity and intelligence we have come to associate with David Wiltse. The plot is tight, the characters are vivid, the protagonist will win you over, and you will not put the book down until the last page. I read all night. Don't put this one off!!

Be Still My Heart
By Kindle Customer
I can think of no book that I've looked more forward to than Heartland by David Wiltse. I must admit at first I was let down that this wasn't a John Becker book. That disappointment lasted about five breathtaking pages before I was quickly sucked into the story of Billy Tree, and I found him to be as compelling, if not more so, than John Becker. Both Billy Tree and John Becker are complex characters, but that is where the similarity ends. Billy is still grounded by his family, particularly his sister. He even takes on the brogue of his Irish ancestors as he takes over the book and the reader's imagination.
After being wounded in a shootout, Billy returns to his home in the heartland of America. His memories of small town USA are slowly replaced by those of a town that is not isolated from the woes of the big city. Before he has time to lick his wounds, he is helping the man he most admired, the town sheriff, solve a murder.
I've learned to expect excellence in books by David Wiltse and consider Heartland to be his best book. The plotting is superb, the characters well drawn and intriguing, and his depiction of the heartland is unblinkingly honest. I absolutely could not put this book down, and I did something I seldom do. I read it again immediately cover to cover. If you are looking for a book with intense and exciting action filled characters you can't seem to leave, I recommend you read Heartland immediately. It is the best book I've read this year, and I sincerely doubt anything will be able to top it. I'm on tenterhooks awaiting information on the next book by Wiltse.

Action-Packed!
By L. Ponder
Billy Tree, Secret Agent, is scouting for trouble in advance of the President's route. Along with his partner, they stop to question Avi Posner in his home. After a confrontation, Billy the soon-to-be-hero, will plead for his life. Horribly wounded and embarrassed, he is treated for wounds both mental and physical. He then will return home, to Nebraska, still very affected by his experience. Demons will haunt him.
One of the things that makes this book so special, is the characterization of Billy Tree. Not often does a reader see such a severely haunted "hero", carry on so heroically. The peaceful town he has returned to, has turned out to be not so peaceful. It's a town full of secrets, and every kind of "bad guy" you could think of.
Besides Billy, the reader meets sister Kath, friend Joan, the sheriff who is also the coroner, and the tough guys and hoods from Billy's childhood. Those tough guys have sons, and they will be part of the force that drives Billy to help with a school shooting.
There's not a page to be turned in this action-packed book, without something happening. Besides the action, there's a mystery, some romance, and of course the small-town experience. Heartland is a great read.

Runaway Heart: A Novel, by Stephen J. Cannell, Stephen Cannell

As an Emmy Award winning writer, Stephen Cannell has created over 40 TV series, including The A-Team, The Greatest American Hero, and 21 Jump Street. He is also a New York Times Bestselling author. In Runaway Heart, Cannell combines cutting edge biotechnology and action-packed suspense in a new and stunningly original thriller set on the outer fringes of medical science . . .

What would modern war be like if the front-line foot soldiers were not our sons and daughters, but genetically engineered animals with superhuman strength and speed, and just enough intelligence to understand commands and follow them blindly?

This is exactly the weapon being developed at a base in the desert by a top-secret government agency.

Attorney Herman Strockmire, a rumpled man with a very big but defective heart, champion of lost legal causes and the infuriating nemesis of giant corporate polluters, becomes involved when one of his employees is literally torn limb from limb by one of the experimental prototypes.

At great personal risk, Herman , his beautiful daughter and law partner, Susan, and ex-LAPD detective, Jack Wirta, ignore all threats and plunge headlong into harm's way, finding themselves involved in a nightmare beyond anyone's wildest imagination...

This science exists today. The future is now.

From Publishers Weekly
Cannell's second novel in six months (after Hollywood Tough) is a cop thriller with a futuristic, sci-fi twist. Hollywood Tough's heroes, LAPD officers Shane Scully and his wife, Alexa Hamilton, take a backseat to a new protagonist, fledgling PI Jack Wirta, a hard-nosed ex-cop (former partner of Scully) who left the force on disability. Irascible and jaded, Wirta has been hooked on Percocet since taking a bullet in the spine during a bank robbery shootout. He is called in to help the eccentric, crusading attorney Herman Strockmeyer, founder of the Institute for Planetary Justice. Strockmeyer has dedicated his professional life to pursuing corrupt corporations and various wings of the government. A houseguest of Barbra Streisand's in L.A., Strockmeyer is suing the USDA, EPA, FDA and others to get an injunction against planting genetically engineered corn, which threatens the Monarch butterfly population. When Strockmeyer's assistant hacks into the computer bank of Gen-A-Tech, a prime contractor in the genetic engineering of agricultural products, he uncovers something much more horrifying than dead butterflies: the Feds are creating a vicious manlike creature to replace human soldiers in combat. And when the assistant is murdered, Strockmeyer and his daughter look to Wirta to save the day. Cannell has a genius for creating memorable characters and quirky, gripping plots. Despite overwriting and jerky pacing, this is a fun read.

From Booklist
Herman J. Strockmire is a lawyer with the heart of Don Quixote. His caseload might be better characterized as a lost-cause load. Here he's battling for the survival of the monarch butterfly, which is on the verge of extinction thanks to a reaction to genetically altered foods. Assisting him in the case are his daughter, Susan, and computer hacker Roland Minton. When Minton is brutally murdered after a surreptitious assault on the data systems of Gen-a-Tec, a firm specializing in genetic research for the government, Herman hires private eye Jack Wirta to dig deeper. Armed with little more than determination to see justice done, Herman, Susan, and Jack find themselves squared off against the worst elements of American industry and the U.S. military. Cannell, one of the most successful television producers of all time as well as the best-selling author of the Shane Scully thrillers, creates memorably endearing characters and places them in harrowing situations with clearly defined moral choices. Strockmire is one of his best. Between battling the military-industrial forces of evil, he copes with an irregular heartbeat, kvetches over Susan and Jack's blossoming relationship, and summons the wherewithal to help Jack with his drug addiction. Too many thriller heroes carry Glocks and boast six-pack abs and dangerously high testosterone levels. Herman has a conscience and a disorganized briefcase. Wes Lukowsky

Another fast paced overnight read from Cannell
By Schtinky
Stephen Cannell has the gift of writing good old fiction that will keep you reading until you finish the book. The star of this novel is his unlikely protagonist, Herman Strockmeyer. An older, unattractive, overweight attorney for "lost cause" clients against Government agencies, he is the David that takes on Goliath for the good of humanity.
With a serious heart condition threatening his life, he refuses to take time out from his cases because he is the only one who will fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. His lovely daughter Susan works with him, and during his investigation for his case against Gen-a-Tec and their biologically engineered corn, his assistant is savagely murdered. Susan and Herman hire unlikely detective Jack Wirta, an ex-LA cop with a prescription drug habit, to find out why Roland was murdered.
This unusual trio of heros is what makes this book tick so loudly, Mr. Cannell's talent for bringing these people to life is the heart of the novel. Our trio discovers much more than biologically engineered corn when their investigation of Gen-a-Tec pulls them into danger with DARPA, a black-op government agency that will do anything to hide their illegal and unethical genetics project. As they run from one danger straight into the next, barely escaping time after time, you won't be able to let go until the conclusion.
Fast paced as all of Mr. Cannell's books are, this is a good story and a quick read with a truly likeable protagonist, and a highly recommended break from your stack of self-help and text books. Enjoy! :-)

A Team Meets X Files
By H. F. Miglino
Rather than summarize the book, as other reviewers have so skillfully done I recommend this book as an exciting page turner. Difficult to put down. SJC writes primarily about the LAPD beat and adds a bit of the x files. I really wanted to know more about "Pan" and his training, development and breeding. A better twist might have been if the DNA was alien or such. The Donald Trump addition was priceless. What ever happened to Pan after he wounded and ran away and disappeared, I've looked back several times and can't seem to find out what happened to him. If anyone knows please post. All in all it is a good quick read, possible made for TV movie.

Most Enjoyable
By John R. Linnell
This is a book that is a little bit of John Grisham and Michael Crichton, but mostly it is Stephen Cannell. It holds your attention, challenges your ideas of what is credible, makes you laugh, makes you think and always entertains you. I looked forward to picking it up and continuing along with the story of the Don Quixote of the legal community in California as he tilted at windmills and the judiciary that thought him unworthy. However, one of his windmills turned out to be real and also deadly and how that all gets exposed and dealt with is a most entertaining story and a tale worth reading and thinking about. Let's hope that the technology which is in the book is not available today. The fly leaf says it is. If so, we all have something to think about.

Ghost: Investigating the Other Side, by Katherine Ramsland

With the same open and personal style that won her much praise for Piercing the Darkness, Katherine Ramsland turns her keen and curious eye to the phenomena of ghosts to uncover the truth behind a number of supernatural "sightings". Written in the bold tradition of participatory journalism, Ramsland's extraordinary investigative memoir takes readers directly into the world of ghost hunting and paranormal activity, offering an unflinching account of this mysterious world. On the track of an authentic "haunting," Ramsland encounters psychics, shamans, voodoo practicioners, and high-tech ghost hunters eager to reveal how to contact spirits. But through her own daring experiments, Ramsland is able to penetrate the supernatural mystery that has inspired paranormal investigations worldwide.

From Publishers Weekly
Ramsland (author of numerous books on Anne Rice, vampirism and other ghoulish subjects) is just the sort of person you'd want to tell you a ghost story: credible, smart, sane and funny, neither a believer nor a skeptic. Cast as an adventure in "participatory journalism," the book begins with Ramsland's chance acquisition of a haunted silver ring. Determined to extract its secrets, she sets out on a quest that gradually turns into a full-blown investigation of psychic aberration in America. She plunges into the vast culture of ghost detection, sleeping in haunted bed-and-breakfasts from Salem to Sedona, familiarizing herself with the latest technology while also consulting conventional occult modes tarot, palm, Ouija. Charmingly understated at all times ("I never quite know how to talk to someone who lives simultaneously in two time periods"), Ramsland admits to being impervious to the spirit world; while psychics and sensitives of every description reel and recoil at the mere sight of her ring, she at first feels and sees nothing. Her gradual conviction, as she delves deeper and deeper into the realm of the unseen, that "something is out there" is all the more spine-tingling. Ramsland is a master of foreboding, and as her tale unravels, an explosive climax seems inevitable. What results more a creepy certainty than a frightful resolution may disappoint some readers. But whatever its payoff, the book will find avid fans among X-Files watchers, amateur ghost hunters, and the vast majority of those who feel that things that go bump in the night should be heard rather than seen. Agent, Lori Perkins.

Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
A haunted ring acquired during Ramsland's research for Piercing the Darkness: Undercover with Vampires in America Today (LJ 9/15/98) drove her to explore the ghost world in this investigative memoir. With a healthy blend of skepticism and avid interest, Ramsland journeys, X-Files-style, into the realm of medians, channelers, psychics, exorcists, and ghost hunters to research the ring's connection to its former owner, a murderer who claimed to be a vampire. Ramsland is careful not to impose easy frameworks on the facts, and her openness enhances the hunt as she sleeps in haunted bed-and-breakfasts and gives tarot and palm reading a try. This daring jaunt is recommended for public library collections on the paranormal and any library with a large occult collection; browsers will be attracted. Leroy Hommerding, Fort Myers Beach Lib. Dist., FL

From Booklist
Employing a participatory sociological approach to the examination of paranormal phenomena, Ramsland totally immerses herself in the subculture of the ghost world. Inspired by the acquisition of a ring purported to be a spiritual link to a deceased serial killer, the author embarks on an intimate odyssey into the mysterious realm of psychics, phantasms, and ghost hunters. Seeking entree into the sphere of the supernatural, she suspends her natural disbelief, cultivates an open mind, and participates in a wide range of ghosting rituals. Although prepared to dismiss many so-called paranormal occurrences in favor of natural explanations, she nevertheless encounters, experiences, and investigates a variety of inexplicable visual, photographic, and verbal manifestations. Both skeptics and believers will be intrigued by this first-person exploration of ghostly visitations. Margaret Flanagan

"Gone to be an Orb"

"Gone to be an Angel" is a popular epitaph, but if the IGHS (International Ghost Hunters Society) has its way, it won't be long before we walk through a cemetery and see a marker bearing the inscription, "Gone to be an Orb"! I would have liked Ms. Ramsland's book a lot more had she not devoted so much of it to the IGHS and its ridiculous theory that "orbs" (reflections of light off minute particles directly in front of the lens and flash of cheap digital cameras) are spirits of the dead. (Quite frankly, I cannot think of anything less appealing than dying and becoming an orb!) The book contains 300 pages and on page 296, the author finally gets around to interviewing a reputable ghost hunter who cast some doubt on the "orb" theory, but she devoted only a single paragraph--and a short one at that--to his opinions. I expected something more objective from Ms. Ramsland. This book was a great disappointment.

A Ghost Here, A Ghost There, A Ghost Everywhere?
By Naila Moon
I was initially intrigued by this book as I have a sheer fascination with ghost and the after life. I will state that I have had my own encounters so, I tend to seek out books like this.

That being said, the author writes this book in first person and in the beginning as purely investigative after encountering a modern day vampire. Now, this may seem non-plausible except that she had done previous works about the subject of vampires. This "vampire" had given her an object, a ring, that purportedly belonged to a now ghost, named "Christian". This act sent her on a journey of what could be said, epic proportions.

The author was lead to many ghostly sites particularly in the Eastern and Southern regions of the U.S., Gettysburg was one that she mentioned periodically throughout the book. It did lead her to Arizona in the ghost town of Jerome of which this reader is familiar with.

In her investigation, she met up with many mediums, psychics, ghost hunters, and people who had encounters with various ghost. Each encounter brought her one step closer, or so it seemed, to the truth about this mysterious ring and ghostly visitors in general. She even went so far as to become a "ghost hunter" complete with all the equipment needed for such an endeavor.

Even though I was initially intrigued and completed reading the book because of it, I often felt bogged down in the reading. Much of the things the author spoke about were repetitive experiences or readings that mediums would get from the ring. I felt at times, she was truly unwilling to accept the things she experienced. In fact, at the end, although she is apparently still ghost hunting, she seems to negate her entire fact finding mission. She even ends up ridding herself of the ring in what seems like a melodramatic ending made to sound like a movie. Or did she? It was disappointing and if nothing else, lead to even more questions.

Although, the book shows photographic evidence of orbs, it does not prove or disprove anything. I am sure her experiences were real but the intertwined store of "Christian" and his lover just seems contrived at best. Was his story told as the book's dedication is made to him? I tend to doubt it, but who knows, maybe the author has more encounters up her sleeve and another book to come out eventually that truly does tell his story and not of "the others".

All in all, the author's true reason for writing this book was to investigate with hopes of finding the real. She took painstaking time to do that and it seems she is still on that quest. I wish her luck in that endeavor to see a real ghost.

3 stars as the book is ok to me.

Disclosure: I picked up this book for a free giveaway from my local library. The views here are 100% my own and may differ from yours. ~Naila Moon

She seems almost like a victim of Stockholm Syndrome
By Annie Moon
{ mild spoilers }

This is a strange book that I could not finish. I find it bizarre that she would meet this man and buy his story without verifying it. She seems almost like a victim of Stockholm Syndrome, swept up in an obsession, in thrall to forces that are dark. The book, except for a few typos and grammatical errors, is well written, but she seems like a naive teenager who wanted to believe in a haunted ring and a very chilling story. If I heard about two murdered girls I'd be running to the police, not using it as fodder for my investigation into the unknown. Ramsland does not strike me as being a very moral individual.

Great for Kids
By Sam A
I bought this for my 9 year old who loves it. I gave it to him last night and he did 4 puzzles. He grabbed it again this morning. This best part is that it wasn't too challenging. He only has asked me 2 questions so far, so it's not too advanced.

Great variety of crossword and other word puzzles
By Ann
My 3rd grader is just eating this up. She wanted a book of crossword puzzles; this has many of those plus a variety of other word puzzles. No patronizing language, goofy artwork or contrived puzzles. I like how they get her to use her vocabulary and spelling, such as with figuring out a word and filling in the missing letters. I also like that the book is not this huge overwhelming monstrosity-- perfect size for travel, not too intimidating to complete, and you can set a goal of completing one in order to get the next one.

Gigi says she particularly likes the puzzles where you fill in the middle letters of the words, and those letters in turn make words which form a riddle and its answer.

Awesome!

This is such a wonderful book; I just like having it! What a novel idea! Most of the projects are outdated, but you still get the basics of how to make the project that you can modernize. The total and complete communication without words is awesome. My plan was to skim through the book, but I went from the beginning to end in one sitting because of how clever the book is. There are at least 3 projects I know I can do right away and I am a true beginner.

"How did you think of that?"
By de Gregory
My wife often asks me "How did you think of that?" when I come up with things to build in the workshop. I tell her I can't explain because my ideas are wordless. When I was very young and my friends were all reading Highlights and other kid stuff, I was probably the youngest subscriber to Popular Science magazine. I'm sure the Wordless Workshop feature every month influenced me for life. My daughter says I can fix anything, even the space shuttle. Glad some of them were put into this book. I still enjoy them.
