From Publishers Weekly
Carroll, author of The Year of the Turtle , here turns his attention to trout, following their annual cycle in New England streams. Like many trout fishermen, he seems to have a special affinity with nature. He writes lyrical, detailed descriptions of the countryside and woods in which trout streams are found, observing the effects of seasonal changes. Brook trout is the native fish; brown and rainbow trout are introduced species. Discussing stocking and explaining how each species has adapted, he points out favorite places of trout, admires the brook's coloration and observes their courtship rites in the autumn. His line drawings and watercolors illuminate a text that will appeal to readers who enjoy the outdoors.

A primer in natural history
By James Stripes
I found this book in the library and kept reading it so long I paid twice the cost of the book in fines. Now, I've ordered my own copy because I cannot be without it.
Written in the style of Aldo Leopold's _Sand County Almanac_, this is a focused study of stream ecology, But it is not a dry book of science. It is a story of a stream through four seasons. The author writes of a place he knows well through a lifetime of hiking and fishing, but where he can still experience childlike wonder. Through his narrative, the reader learns about the fish, the water, plants and insects, birds and beasts, and the relationships that sustain the cycles of life and death along a stream. The author offers perspectives that develops a sense of ecological responsibility.

NOT ONLY FOR FISHERMEN!
By A Customer
This book is a delight for anyone interested in the outdoors & nature. The title sounds like the book would be for undergraduates in Fish Culture; however, it is a happy surprise to find that David M. Carroll has written a wonderful, lyrical account of the life of trout including the environment and all the living creatures, critters, and flora that enter the facinating world in the life cycle of the fish. His lovely drawings add to the naturalists' delight! His account of fishing for these elusive fish should catch the fishermen among his readers, too!

A beautiful book and well written as well
By J. Miller
This is for people that truly value a book for its art. This is an almost magical work with scenes of trout, insects, and natural history. The illustrations in this book are some of the best I have ever seen. I was surprised to find the illustrator and writer are the same. A great book for your coffee table, library, or classroom. The only problem I have is that I did not find it sooner. ¸

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-This classic text in both American literature and American history is read by Pete Papageorge with deliberation and simplicity, allowing the author's words to bridge more than 160 years to today's listeners. Following a stirring preface by William Lloyd Garrison (who, nearly 20 years after he first met Douglass, would himself lead the black troops fighting from the North in the Civil War), the not-yet-30-year-old author recounts his life's story, showing effective and evocative use of language as well as unflinchingly examining many aspects of the Peculiar Institution of American Slavery. Douglass attributes his road to freedom as beginning with his being sent from the Maryland plantation of his birth to live in Baltimore as a young boy. There, he learned to read and, more importantly, learned the power of literacy. In early adolescence, he was returned to farm work, suffered abuse at the hands of cruel overseers, and witnessed abuse visited on fellow slaves. He shared his knowledge of reading with a secret "Sunday school" of 40 fellow slaves during his last years of bondage. In his early 20's, he ran away to the North and found refuge among New England abolitionists. Douglass, a reputed orator, combines concrete description of his circumstances with his own emerging analysis of slavery as a condition. This recording makes his rich work available to those who might feel encumbered by the printed page and belongs as an alternative in all school and public library collections.

Review
"Having consistently used the book for almost a decade, I can say that it remains the most popular of my required books. The introduction places Douglass in a historical context comprehensible to undergraduates and offers students shrewd insights into how he drafted his autobiography."

This is NOT the the original text.

This not a copy of the original text it was "revised for common core standards" as it says on the book. In other words, you're not getting the whole story as written by Fredrick Douglass.

for they allow us to gain a better understanding of how far our society has come
By Jayah
This autobiography was assigned to me when I was a junior in high school. Three years later, as a sophomore in college, I was asked to read the book again for my class on Black Thought and Literature. I wish that I had taken the time to slow down and analyze Frederick Douglass' narrative from a literal, analytical, and figurative perspective. Had I done that the first time around—as opposed to treating the book as another required reading that I needed to speed-read through—I believe that my understanding would have been more in-depth and meaningful. The emotion and conviction with which the author writes is not only poetic and moving, but captivating as well. The imagery, combined with Douglass' views on religion's role in the enslavement of black bodies, masterfully paints a story that (in combination with other narratives) has, unfortunately, been lost throughout time. In fact, many Black writers during this period refused to publish their experiences for fear that they will be caught and returned to slavery. In other cases, some writers used pen names to add some anonymity to their experiences. Nevertheless, such works should be cherished and valued; for they allow us to gain a better understanding of how far our society has come, and how much more needs to be done to ensure a future where everyone is equal (in the truest sense of the word).

Good book to read.
By Abq-John
The book shows very well the difficult circumstances that slaves in America had to live under. It also shows how humans can become so mean and tyrannical when given ultimate power over someone. This is also how dictators are born in our world. When someone is given power over another that person's pride can get out of control. They get away with one thing, then another, and another. Their friends are likewise minded and tell each other that they are great guys, it goes to their heads. The book also shows how if you look different from another and you have the power then you can assume you are better. Racism can develop and other cruel things too. God wants us to work together. Appreciate each other, enjoy the talents of everyone, we can all help our nation and world if we throw unrestricted selfish pride to the side. A little pride isn't bad but overgrown pride is destructive. Just as the Bible says, "Pride goeth before the fall."

Winfield: Living in the Shadow of the Woolworths, by Monica Randall

Monica Randall grew up on the Gold Coast of Long Island and was fascinated by the massive estates and their tantalizing stories. Millionaire F. W. Woolworth built Winfield, the grandest of its manors in the 1910s. On a clear day, you can see the New York City skyline from its balustraded roof, yet for nearly a century few have been allowed to enter its gates.

In the 1960s Monica was living in one of the fabled mansions built by a Five-and-Dime heiress. While there, she began a career scouting locations for movie; she used many of the surrounding estates including Winfield. After a brief incarnation as a charm school, Winfield was closed and auctioned off. At the auction, Monica met a mysterious European businessman, who bought the house. After a whirlwind romance, they became engaged, and Monica moved in to Winfield, only to have her suspicions confirmed: Winfield is haunted. Amid magnificent gilded carvings and marble, a labyrinth of secret passageways, hidden chambers, and deserted tunnels help reveal the true nature of its eccentric builder.

Through exhaustive research and countless interviews, Monica gradually uncovered stories of the Woolworths’ sad past: the suicide of Edna Woolworth (Barbara Hutton’s mother), Woolworth’s obsession with Napoleon and the Egyptian occult, and the rumors surrounding the unsolved fire which burnt the first Winfield to the ground. This riveting memoir explores the culture and history of an era gone by, filled with enthralling stories of infamous scandals and breathtaking Gilded Age tales of New York society. Captivating and impossible to put down, this book will enchant readers everywhere.

Throughout the last fifty years the Gold Coast mansions were regularly razed for subdevelopments; Winfield is the last of the marble palaces still standing.

From Publishers Weekly
When Dominick Dunne praises a book, you can be sure about the subject: rich people and fabulous houses. But readers should be warned: this page-turner is also a weird ghost story. Randall, who spent her teen years raiding soon-to-be-destroyed mansions on Long Island's Gold Coast, rescuing everything from fixtures to furniture, later lived in Winfield, the mansion built by the fabulously wealthy and eccentric (he was obsessed with Napoleon) F.W. Woolworth. A former fashion model, photographer and author of another book about Gold Coast mansions, Randall moves from historical drama to melodrama when detailing how she came to call Winfield home. But she achieves an ideal balance between the bizarre and the compelling; even her romance with a mysterious, and occasionally obnoxious, foreigner seems plausible. Toward the end, after a visitor to Winfield develops stigmata, a rat appears possessed by a long-dead spirit, and a desperate search for an Egyptian tomb behind a wall in the mansion's basement threatens to turn deadly, readers will expect Randall to confess that she's made the whole thing up. But not only does she make no such confession, she's researched psychic phenomena in an effort to make sense of it all, providing a creepy example of how truth can be not only stranger, but sometimes more gripping, than fiction. 16 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

From Booklist
Randall's interest in the Gold Coast mansions of Long Island isn't just a passion; it has been a life's work. As a teenager, she and her two sisters found ways of breaking into the abandoned mansions and rescuing furniture, artifacts, and steamer trunks containing gowns before bulldozers and wrecking balls leveled the grand homes. For years Randall photographed the estates, but she also became a contact between production companies looking for opulent sites to shoot movies and advertisements and the remaining Gold Coast owners who needed financial help with their overwhelming maintenance costs and property taxes. Randall became attached to the beautiful Winfield, built by F. W. Woolworth, fell in love with one of its owners, Andre Von Brunner, and lived there for many months. The romance of the gilded era, rumors of haunted homes and the occult, and the excitement of a young woman fascinated by the beauty of Winfield and its eccentric owner fill Randall's account. Jane Eyre fans will love this memoir laced with romance and a gothic atmosphere. Michelle Kaske

A Magical Mystery Tour of the Gold Coast
By Jonster
Ever since Gatsby glorified it, the Golden Age of Long Island's North Shore continues to fascinate.

Monica Randall's inspired quest to save as many relics of this fading era as she could had me rooting for her all the way. I gasped when I read about the bulldozer operator who took delight in destroying the alabaster fireplace after an unsuccessful bribe. By the time Monica moves to the scene of the 1955 Woodward murder, I was hooked. I have to disagree with some of Randall's "facts" related to that murder. For example, she says that Truman Capote got Ann Woodward to confess that she murdered her husband which I believe is untrue. That was the way Dominick Dunne wrote it in his novel. In actuality, there was a man named Bill Sudduth, now gone, who was part of the circle that Truman Capote and Dominick Dunne ran in. He worked for the cruise line and was put in charge of Ann Woodward in exile after the death of her husband. It was he who provided inside information to Capote and Dunne. I have never read that she confided anything about the "murder" to him over the years they knew each other.

Monica Randall is foolish-brave and not easily spooked. She is self-confident, a model who has worked for Pierre Balmain, the premiere designer in Paris at the time. And she has dreams of a life lived on the Gold Coast during the Gatsby Years or perhaps slightly before. She realizes she seems to have psychic abilities when she sees a "still" of her dream in a turn-of-the-century photograph in the newspaper archives.

From here the book becomes something else, more of an exploration of the spirit world and her own and others' psychic abilities.

A shadow of implausibility hangs over some scenes, however, especially at the end, and I wonder about some of the characters (and rodents) Randall fails to mention in the thoughtful afterword she provides. What happened to her fiance'? I also wondered why, without giving anything away, that a certain area wasn't more fully investigated by the subsequent owners and reported on in the book since it is such a crucial element.

Still, I found the book to be totally engrossing and well-written. I found Randall delightfully odd, especially when describing one of the antique dresses she wore to a party with a real Woolworth who lived in back of her in a large mansion. Her description of the disintegration of this dress had me laughing on the subway.

The entire book has a ghostly feel to it, even the photograph of the author posed in an antique gown with a feather fan. She is ethereal and otherworldly, slightly out of focus against a grand piano. And that's how this book reads -- a lovely tour through the remnants of a forgotten era.

Outstanding; a true page turner!
By Jesse Clifton
The author begins by pulling you into the horror she feels at watching the famed Gold Coast mansions be razed to make way for new development. I found myself drawn into the activities of the Gold Coast Rescue Club which used just about every trick in the book, so to speak, to rescue what artifacts they could from the crumbling and neglected mansions and related outbuildings. (You'll be amazed at what they manage to rescue from obscurity) This is a fascinating story, not just of Woolworth and his eccentricities or Winfield Manor, but of a life long love of the architectural monuments from an era that has long since come and gone. The story weaves from her adolescent years to living in a Woolworth heiress mansion to meeting and falling in love with the man who purchased Winfield in the late 70's and her subsequent move into the estate. Don't confuse this as an all encompassing narrative on Woolworth, his family or Winfield. Rather, it's a gripping story of one woman's love of an era and her involvement with one particular magnificent Gold Coast Mansion.

Written with a Passion
By Ken T.
Ms. Randall is very passionate in her interests of the former Gold Coast of Long Island. Her passion carries through clearly in this book of Woolworth's old estate in Glen Cove. Having visited the estate several times in the past I can say she's right on target in her descriptions. She ties the present to the past of Winfield together very well. As you read this you can almost picture yourself standing in the midst of the characters; its that descriptive. If you have never seen the old estate there are photographs as well to bring you there. While non-fiction, one can't help but feel some creative license has been taken in the writing. No matter, since the book is entertaining in the oddity of Winfield's present, as well as in it's less than stellar heyday due largely to it's eccentric owner, Frank W. Woolworth. Well worth your time

The Management of Peace Processes (Ethnic and Intercommunity Conflict), by NA NA

In recent years, the resolution of violent conflicts has undergone significant changes. The UN-dominated interventions of the late 1980s have been replaced by a new form of peace process. This typically involves the protagonists more directly in the process, with external interventions from regional and neighbouring countries rather than the UN, in attempts to move protracted ethnic conflicts towards some sort of political accommodation. Yet there are few comparative analyses of how these peace processes are managed and how they tackle obstacles such as violence during negotiations or re-integrating former combatants into civil society. The Management of Peace Processes has monitored five peace processes (Israel/Palestine, South Africa, the Basque Country, Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland) over more than two years. Based on interviews with senior politicians and policy-makers involved in all five peace processes, it identifies those factors which facilitate or block political movement in deeply divided societies. It highlights issues of negotiation and constitutional change, political violence, economics, external influences, public opinion and symbolism. The book also challenges a number of commonly accepted views associated with peace processes such as the existence of peace dividends, the role of leaders and the impact of violence on negotiations.

American Dreamers: Charmian and Jack London, by Clarice Stasz

Jack London's stories of adventure in the frozen landscapes of the Yukon and the steamy islands of the South Seas have captured the imaginations of readers all over the world. Born into the working class, London was a major force in the lively Socialist movement of his day. In 1903 he shocked the morals of his country when he left his wife and two young daughters for a spunky spinster five years his senior. A new breed of woman, Charmian Kitteridge was notorious in the Bay area for daring to ride her horse astride and work in an office, unlike proper women of the day. As his "Mate-Woman," Charmian contributed to Jack's accomplishments -- she was his editor, transcriber, confidante, as well as the model for many of Jack's female characters. Together they overcame threats to their love that stemmed from Jack's alcoholism, infidelities, and illness. This is a compelling portrait that challenges the long"Cheld view of London as a rough, hard-drinking womanizer, and of Charmian as a passive, childish dependent. Instead, this is a love story and a fascinating portrait of a couple whose courage, passion, and vitality remain a model of love fulfilled.

From Publishers Weekly
In this revisionist, not entirely credible joint biography of the Londons, Stasz, who teaches at Sonoma University in California, draws on the novelist's writings as clues to his personality, challenging the popular concept of him as a manic, brutal alcoholic, and stressing his sensibility and humane qualities. Charmian, in a portrait based in large part on her diaries, emerges not only as the devoted lover, partner and literary model of a famous man, but as a distinct individual who shared Jack's three years of South Sea Island adventures, the inspiration of the Cruise of the Snark , and published two books of her own. She is shown also as sympathetic to his socialist politics and ranching interests. The author attributes the preoccupation with the spiritual in the novelist's later works to disillusion due to rancor and estrangement from his first wife and daughter, to material losses and to the physical ailments fostered by the alcoholism that led to his death in 1916 at age 39. From Library Journal
Jack London has enjoyed something of a critical revival in the last couple of decades, after having been enormously popular early in this century. One very good critical study of London's works is Charles N. Watson's The Novels of Jack London (Univ. of Wisconsin Pr., 1983). Stasz's work, however, focuses on London's wife, Charmianhis mate-woman, as he called her. Relying on a number of unpublished, seldom-seen materials, including 40 years of Charmian's diaries, Stasz briefly covers the young Charmian and Jack and closely examines their 11 years of marriage. Though her style is a bit melodramatic, Stasz's study belongs in extensive literary collections. John Budd, Graduate Lib. Sch., Univ. of Arizona, Tucson

Away they went
By Barbara Cleaver
Being an avid biography reader I have developed some prejudices. I like biographies where I can detect that the author liked his subject. It is obvious that although discerning about London's at times haphazard behavior, the author does like and understand her subject. Ms Stasz introduces enough psychological insight to explain this behavior without the explanations becoming oppressive. Both Charmian and Jack become friends you care about. They are developed into vital people whose adventures you share, disasters and all. Another prejudice is readability and this was one of those books I read easily. I would recommend it highly and I don't do that often, unfortunately.

This is not just about the writer, but also about his second wife and
about the times, which resemble today in a lot of ways, especially
economically. It's fascinating.

A good book if you happen to like the author's politics
By A Customer
"Patriarchy" "American imperialism" and other post-modern and feminist political buzzwords ruin this book just as much as they ruined Professor Stasz's "Jack London's Women." The Professor's statements (paraphrased) that without Charmian, his mother, his nanny, et al, the world would never have heard of Jack London is bunk, and insulting to a genius of American letters. Further, her baseless assertion that London's first wife and second wife were happier after his death because he was gone from their lives is wishful thinking. I think his widow might have begged to differ with the good Professor. Professor Stasz but destroys her credibility as a scholar by continually showcasing her assumptions about a man she never knew, colored by her politics. I'll never waste my time on her work again.

From Publishers Weekly
Ben Purcell, a colonel shot down in a helicopter in 1968, was imprisoned in various camps in North Vietnam until 1973, much of the time in solitary confinement. His wife Anne raised their five children, who ranged in age from 212 to 15 during their father's capture, and played an active role in national, state and local Georgia MIA/POW organizations. In this memoir, the Purcells recreate the years of separation, stressing the importance of religion in helping them to survive and to achieve the state of "relinquishment." Purcell, who escaped twice and was recaptured, notes that he has not changed his attitude about the Vietnam War. He recalls with feeling his statement to his captors that he was in Southeast Asia to help the Vietnamese people "determine their own destiny" and expresses puzzlement that the interrogator found his comments funny. In all, an inspiring book, especially for those who are deeply religious. Photos.

From Kirkus Reviews
An affectingly homespun and gritty account of how US Army Colonel Ben Purcell and his wife Anne coped with his five years (1968-73) as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. Trading off chapters, Ben describes what it's like to have your life taken from you in one stroke of bad luck, while Anne details a sort of widowhood in which she struggles to preserve a tightly woven life in the absence of her beloved partner. The Vietnam-set chapters are gripping, full of drama and telling detail. Knowing he will not get medical aid without cooperating, Purcell spills the beans on US infantry tactics to one ``Pugnose''- -they are based, he says, on man-to-man vs. zone coverage, safety blitzes, end-runs, etc. Pugnose buys Purcell's football-inspired fakery, and the prisoner gets a doctor of sorts. When interrogator ``Crisco'' asks Purcell where the Americans are now that Purcell needs them, a US fighter plane appears from nowhere at treetop level, followed by a deafening sonic boom that terrifies Crisco and ends the interview. Eventually Purcell escapes, but is recaptured, isolated, and forced to subsist on rice and hot water. (The appearance of tea signals further interrogation.) Back home, Anne, who up to now has made all major decisions with her husband, copes with the void as best she can, keeps the car running, and fights the pull of despair, holding her young family (five children) together as much by prayer as by anything. And that is the same glue that binds her husband together: the faith that is the message of this book. At its center is a calm fearlessness that is almost unnerving, even as Purcell's lack of rancor toward his captors is impressive. A powerful, engrossing, well-written documentation of quiet heroism on two fronts. (Sixteen pages of photographs--not seen.) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Amazing look at the American POW experience in Viet Nam
By JOE-JOE BOOKS
Ben Purcell was turning forty when he was captured during the Viet Nam War. He mentions how one of his captors called him "an old man" when he found out Purcell was forty, and then actually showed him an odd sort of respect as a result. What Purcell faced in the prison system was a lot different from that show of respect, and Purcell gives a good account of that experience. The book is well written, and gives you a firsthand look at the POW experience. He writes about his deep Christian faith, and how it played an important part in his survival while imprisoned. The book goes into detail about Purcell's two(!) escapes from the prison system, and his subsequent punishements. It is a quick read and would be interesting for anyone looking to read about the American POW experience--or the experience of the wife of a POW--during the war. It would also be interesting for someone looking to read about that experience from a Christian's viewpoint.

Love & Duty
By W.H. McDonald Jr.
Bem and Anne have written a very moving account of their experiece - one that left me inspired and with wet eyes. It shows how faith and love can help us to endure whatever evils we are tested with in life. I have had the honor to meet them both in person this year while working with the documentary "In The Sahdow of The Blade". I was on our huey helicopter when Ben took his first ever ride on any helicopter, since being shot down in South Vietnam and taken prisoner by the VC and NVA. He is a man of great faith and love - and of course, courage! Anne is a lady of great courage herself and the love that they both show in person and in this book for each other, is inspiring. This book is one of the best I have ever read on POWs, love or on courage. I highly recommend it to all - and not just those who wish to read about the war. This book captures so much more of the spiritual side of life that it will be a great value to anyone who reads it.

BEST BOOK ABOUT VIETNAM POW EXPERIENCE!
By W.H. McDonald Jr.
When we were making the documentary film, "In The Shadow of the Blade," we got to meet a most amazing couple -- Ben and Anne Purcell. We had landed in a wooded LZ up in the Georgia hills next to a river. We were there to interview several veterans and for me to perform a wedding ceremony in our Huey helicopter. It was exciting to around some of the nicest people in the world and to be part of that journey across America. But the single most memory of that trip that stands out for me was sitting around at night next to our Huey listening to Ben and Anne talk about their experiences while he was held captive as a POW in North Vietnam for over 5 and half years. He was the oldest POW of that war (Having just turned 40 the week he was taken prisoner) and he was listed as MIA for almost the entire time he was held captive.

His story and that of his wife who waited at home with all their children are what "Love & Duty" is all about. It is a most remarkable and inspiration story as you could read. They both showed lots of courage and class. The book explores the treatment Ben endured and the emotional account of how Anne coped not knowing even if Ben was alive for all that time.

There is neither bitterness nor hate or even angry in the book or in them personally. They truly are people of great faith and more importantly great love for each other, their country and God! This couple represents the very best of America and of what it means to be a human being. This is one tale of being a POW that will inspire the readers. You will come away from this book with the greatest affection and love for these two people.

This book deals with both of their experiences. Ben wrote alternate chapters that follow that same time frame with what she was going through at home trying to make her life and family work and what he was enduring as a POW. The thread of love and faith is fully visible in the fabric of the story they jointly present. If you were going to read just one book about the POW experience then this is the book to buy!

Infection: The Uninvited Universe, by Gerald N. Callahan

We use antibacterial soap to wash our hands, we swab doorknobs with antibacterial wipes, we pop antibiotics at the first sign of disease - all to avoid infection. But we are all infected. From before birth to after death, infection is what makes humans human. In a startling, chilling, and inspiring narrative, veteran microbiologist, and author Gerald Callahan, explores the world of the microscopic creatures that live on, in, and around us. Did you know that: our overuse of antibiotics is placing us on then cusp of a resurgence of diseases we had thought long conquered? and, many ailments - from schizophrenia and gastric ulcers to obsessive-compulsive disorder - are now being linked to infections? Infection will awaken you to the microscopic brethren that ensure our health as well as take it from us. For better or worse, infection shapes our lives.

From Booklist
Microbiologist-pathologist Callahan has compelling news. Only about 10 percent of the cells of a human body can be called human. The remainder are bacteria. This is a good thing, for without these bacteria, we would surely die. It is the vastly underrated microbiotic system that sustains and even enables life. Lacking a complete set of healthy bacteria allowing us to digest food and fend off illness, individual existence would be impossible. Largely responsible for strengthening the immune system, these good germs ought to be sought after and nourished, Callahan says. Pointing to a number of illnesses, from asthma to acute lymphoblastic lymphoma, that can be at least partially linked to a lack of exposure to certain bacterial infections, Callahan makes a case for lackadaisical housekeeping. Not so sloppy as to foster the germs that deliver infectious diseases such as malaria, AIDS, SARS, or influenza, however, any of which might deal the ultimate blow that cleanses the planet of humanity. Callahan writes of an at-times unpleasant topic in clear, reader-friendly language. Donna Chavez

Chapter One
Infections: Where We Get Them

Henry Perry raises his wineglass to his nose and inhales the rich scent of the claret. Across the rim of the glass he stares into the startling blue eyes of the young woman he bought for tonight. She is dressed in lavender, and her auburn hair falls onto bare shoulders. Henry hasn't seen such pale and perfect flesh in months. Her name is Adrienne, and she smells of musk. She smiles at Henry as his eyes swallow her.

He is enjoying himself. For the past six months he has fought trench foot and Germans in the mud at Soissions. But not tonight. Tonight, Henry's uniform is only for show. His eyes and his nose and his mouth, even his bravery, are for Adrienne only.

Henry places his wineglass next to his linen napkin.

"You are a lovely woman, Adrienne."

"And you are a lovely man," she says to Henry in words wrapped in the syrup of her French.

Henry laughs nervously.

But she is right. Henry is young, blond-haired, and tall. The weeks at war have thinned him, and now he is shaped more like a man than a boy. His uniform, by some monumental accident, fits him perfectly. Tonight, Henry's long arms and legs seem just right to Adrienne and the others who have noticed the young American and his escort.

The waiter, in his clipped French, interrupts to ask Henry if he would like more wine. Adrienne translates.

"Tell him I do," Henry says to her. "Tell him I want all the wine he can bring. And then I want you."

Adrienne tells the waiter to bring one more bottle of wine. Beneath the table she adjusts her stockings and straightens her skirt. She reaches across the table for Henry's hand. Oddly, she finds a nugget of eagerness inside her own stomach this evening. How surprising, she thinks.

The waiter arrives with another bottle of wine and uncorks it as they both watch. He fills their glasses and leaves.

The lights here are dim, the carpet and curtains thick, the food spiced. Before the war, lovers came here often to sit in dim corners beneath dark wood and eat from one another's forks.

And that's what those who surround Henry and Adrienne imagine them to be, lovers. But these others, with their own reasons and purposes tonight, are wrong. Henry and Adrienne are not lovers. Theirs is a practical arrangement. Henry and Adrienne have agreed on the cost of love, and it is too high. Both are here for something else, something less expensive, something a soldier on a short furlough can afford. Or so they think.

Everything Henry sees is just as it should be this night. The room, the candlelight, Adrienne, her dress, her ears, her mouth, her neck. The thick red wine and the salty food. Outside, even the darkness seems dressed just for Henry and Adrienne.

The things he cannot see, Henry has decided to ignore. There is so much to leave behind--the Germans, the trenches, pieces of people in the mud. Not tonight.

Tonight, Henry will fill his eyes and thoughts only with Adrienne.

Who could blame him? But in the end, that choice will cost Henry his life.

"Is it time?" he asks.

"Nearly," she says.

Neither of them expects any of this to last beyond tonight. That is what they have planned. That is what they have agreed upon. But there are others here tonight, making plans of their own.

By the time I met Henry, he could no longer speak in complete sentences. He couldn't walk the fifty feet or so across our backyard without jerks and staggers. Sometimes he drooled. These were Adrienne's gifts.

Henry was living, then, at the VA hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Every Sunday afternoon, my father would gather him up in our family's Ford station wagon and bring him out to our house in Bountiful for dinner. Henry seemed to like that.

Henry was my mother's brother. She and her mother, who lived with us then, had arranged for Henry to be moved from the VA hospital in Kansas City to the VA in Salt Lake City so that he would be closer to them.

His eyes were still piercingly blue, his hair still blond, though mottled with gray, and he still had the whippet-thin frame of a soldier. But the rest was no longer Henry.

In spite of his peculiarities, or maybe because of them, I enjoyed my uncle. He cursed and spat and wore soiled clothes, all of which I admired. But even I could see that something about Henry was not right.

More than once I asked my mother to explain Henry's peculiarities, but it wasn't until long after his death that she told me the truth. Henry had syphilis. For my mother, that was like a slap in the face. Syphilis was a disease of the poor, the deviant, the unwashed. It was a sickness that fell upon the godless as punishment for their sins.

Syphilis, of course, isn't punishment for anything. It is a disease caused by a bacterium--Treponema palidum--a little curlicue of catastrophe known as a spirochete. T. palidum moves from person to person during the most intimate of human acts. Wounds, torn tissues, cracked skin are all open doors for syphilis.

That night in Paris, another was sitting at the table with Henry and Adrienne, one no human could see, but one who knew full well that this was not to be a one-night stand. Even Adrienne's eagerness that night was fired by the bacterium. The next morning, as Adrienne stayed behind in her small flat overlooking the Rue Michelet, the spirochete left with Henry.

Fleming's penicillin wouldn't come along for decades, so over the years, T. palidum had its way with Henry. First, there was a minor wound, a chancre, not at all painful. And then it went away. Henry was relieved. Later, a rash spread across Henry's palms and the soles of his feet. He assumed it was left over from the trenches of France. Headaches followed. Then the spirochete took Henry's joints--his knuckles, his knees--then it took his eyes, his spine, and his mind. When there was nothing more to take, T. palidum took my uncle Henry's life. After all, Henry had dared to take a night off from the war and a moment's pleasure from a beautiful woman in a simple flat one night in Paris.

A microscopic curl of protoplasm, overlooked in the frenzy of lust.

When I finally understood what happened to Henry, I was shocked. Not because Henry had acquired his disease during an act of illicit love, but because of the immensity and the voracity of his infection. The idea that something as tiny and as simple as a bacterium could so unrelentingly and so easily take both a man's mind and his life scared me.

That, of course, changed nothing. A single child's fear was of no consequence to the dominant form of life on planet Earth.

That's simply how things are.

Henry was my uncle. But Henry's story is not unique, not nearly. Bacteria are the most numerous living things on Earth. Everything on the face of this planet, living or dead, has been changed by bacteria--the color of our skies and seas, the air we breathe, the soil beneath our feet, our immune systems, our digestive systems, and each and every human cell. Infection is the way of life. We owe everything we have to bacteria.

The Bacteria That Make Us Human:
Our Normal Flora

I read a science fiction story once in which space travel for humans was possible only when men and women were disassembled into their component cells and stored in vats of salt water. In this way, while rockets accelerated to the enormous speeds needed to reach distant planets during anyone's lifetime, the effects of the massive g-forces were diminished. At the end of such trips, a very complicated computer would suck up each man and each woman from their tubs of brine and reassemble them into human beings.

One young woman, faced with the prospect of dis- and reassembly, expressed considerable concern over the computer's ability to put her back together properly. And worse, she wondered if the computer erred whether she would ever know.

To assure herself of accurate reconstruction, she asked a male friend to go over her body very carefully before and after the space flight. Not surprisingly, he agreed. And in the end, he concluded that the woman was herself once again. This reassured her. But the man's assertions were meaningless. There was no way he could possibly have known if she was or wasn't the same woman.

Each of us is made from billions of little bits of life. In an average person, there are about 1.1 x 10 14 of these bits. That's 1.1 with thirteen zeros after it. 1.1 x 10 14 is roughly equal to the number of seconds in three million years, twenty thousand times the number of people on Earth, the number of thimblefuls of water in five cubic miles of ocean, or the number of grains in a hundred thousand cubic yards of beach sand. A lot of bits. We call these bits of living things cells--skin cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, liver cells, nerve cells, epithelial cells. Certainly 1.1 x 10 14 is more pieces than any man could verify in a lifetime, regardless of how earnestly he might try.

But let's suppose the young man could have checked every single cell in the young woman's body (after all, this was science fiction). When he did, he would have found something startling. After their long space flight and biological metamorphoses, he would have found that the woman's body contained nearly ten times as many bacteria cells as human cells. And if, as he panicked over this discovery, he had checked his own body, he would have found that most of his cells were also bacteria. Imagine their horror. Imagine the setback this would have dealt space travel if word of it had leaked out.

But the bacteria inside both of them had nothing to do with their space flight. Though we don't often notice it, every human is mostly bacteria. In an average human body--e...

Interesting, but nothing really new...
By Rebecca D. Gold
This book is well-written and covers the topic, but it lacks that sharp perspective, wit, and new ideas that really great books of this type have. There's not really anything here you couldn't find anywhere else, and presented more in-depth. It reads as rather a quick overview; perhaps I've read so many of these kinds of books that I expect a more focused and in-depth treatment of the subject. I have no complaints about this book and wouldn't tell you not to buy it, but I will tell you that there are better, more interesting ones.

Our bacteria, our friends
By R. Iverson
We live in times where people think of the microbial world as the enemy to be defeated at all costs. Almost daily we are accosted by headlines proclaiming the dangers of Avian Flu or Methicillin resistant Staph aureus or MRSA. As a physician, I am called on to lead this charge against these microscopic invaders.

But wait, Callahan says, this relationship between human and microbe is not so simple. We are in fact dependent upon the uncountable microbes that live within us and upon us to keep us healthy. From this book, I learned how important these fellow travelers are for our own normal development. Perhaps our obsession with cleanliness and our excessive use of antibiotics should be reconsidered.

The vast majority of microbes live symbiotically with us. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement. Only a select few seek to destroy us, and that often only by accident, for it is rarely in the best interest of a parasite to destroy its host. Furthermore, our overuse of antibiotics is clearly the main cause of the rise of "superbugs", which can evolve resistance to antibiotics in a matter of days. Should we not consider carefully whether the antibiotics we take or the antibiotics we put into our food supply are not, in the long run, creating more problems than they are solving?

Callahan spells out the complex and often confusing relationship we have with the microcosmos in this well researched and entertaining book. He asks very important questions that we need to consider in our daily lives and in our public health policies.

Read this book and take a thrilling ride into this invisible universe.

Superb
By Michael Spenard
It has been a while since I read this. But I am very fond of this little book and thought I would leave some feedback.

This is a brilliant book. Written to be accessible by any reader in what is a compelling tour of pathology by way of mixing fact with personal story. Most importantly, the author integrates these facts and stories to give the reader a scientific perspective that I can only describe as a pious experience.
The layperson will leave this book with an improved perspective and appreciation for the interaction between macro and microbiology, and the mosaic of humanity at all levels.

I would recommend Matt Ridely's The Red Queen as a good follow up read. Or perhaps Carl Zimmers Parasite Rex.
