Levy, a staff reporter for Time magazine, tells the picaresque story of Jewish adventurer Morris Cohen, who in a small way helped influence events in China. Born in Russia of Orthodox Jewish parents and reared in England, Cohen was a hustler, card sharp, and con man who was eventually forced to emigrate to Canada. There, he did the unthinkable in the early 20th century when he came to the aid of a Chinese man. This singular event endeared him to the Chinese community and changed his life. Ultimately, Cohen went to China, where he became the bodyguard of Sun Yat-sen, unifier of modern China. Well researched and written, Levy's biography lets us view the events that shaped history through Cohen's eyes. Although sympathetic to Cohen, Levy has written an unbiased account of his life that is particularly strong in its portrayal of life in Russia, England, Canada, and China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Soon after the turn of the century a Jewish Cockney adventurer arrived in Canada, seeking his--or somebody's--fortune. How he evolved into a general in the Chinese Republican Army, and a notorious soldier of fortune as well, is carefully recounted by Levy, a reporter for Time magazine, in his debut biography. Morris Cohen, scion of a religious Jewish family, spent his youth much like the Artful Dodger, picking pockets in the East End of London, precincts which were haunted by the likes of Jack the Ripper. After multiple arrests and a stint in a reformatory, the young hustler made his way to the Canadian prairies, where he became a sometime carny huckster and a full-time card shark, often attracting the attention of the local constabulary. But after service in the Great War, through force of personality and a loud voice, he became something of a community leader, especially among the beleaguered Chinese of the Canadian West. His affinity for the underdog soon made him their sole Caucasian lodge brother and eventually brought him to the attention of the father of the Chinese Republic, Sun Yat-sen. Cohen instantly became a Sun worshipper and, with guns on both ample hips, a bodyguard to the great man and, later, factotum to his widow, the redoubtable Soong. Through a hellish internment during WW II and the turbulent events in postwar China, Two-Gun plied his adventurer's trade. Alas, there's no retirement plan for that trade, and the aging rogue, without savings, became a tiresome Mnchausen, ever expansive about his powers. Levy attempts to set the tangled record straight after exhaustive, detailed research and interviews on three continents. The man he brings to life isn't Lawrence of Arabia; he is a sweeter character. Cohen had an interesting life, and Daniel S. Levy, a reporter for Time magazine, has carefully and colorfully laid it out in this new biography. Mr. Levy has sifted through a voluminous historical record, interviewed those still around who knew Cohen from the old days and, in particular, sorted out truth from legend in piecing together Cohen's peripatetic life.

This sorting out is particularly commendable, given that Cohen's life had, until now, been understood through "The Life and Times of General Two-Gun Cohen," a biography that Cohen wrote in the 1950's with Charles Drage, a writer. The Drage book, Mr. Levy shows convincingly, is filled with sensationalizing details that just happen not to be true.

Perhaps sitting around the lobbies of hotels in his waning years, Cohen was a blowhard, but he emphatically did not lead a boring life... Cohen's life was intertwined with the turmoil of the 20th century in China, to which Mr. Levy proves himself a reliable and informative guide.... Levy's particularly good at scene-setting, at creating the sounds and flavour of East London, of the Canadian Prairies during the century's first decades, of China's bloody struggle to modernize, of the casual brutality of its Japanese conquerors.... The Cohen we get is an uneducated, bumptious fellow, full of swagger and bravado. He is a card sharp, a gambler and a scam artist, who lucked into his China connection through gambling ties established in Saskatoon. Nevertheless, he is also a man genuinely committed to China ... enormously generous, capable of great warmth and devoted to his family, upon which he lavished expensive gifts. Thorough analysis and interesting reading

I have just had the opportunity to read the customer review posted by Michael Alderton regarding this very fine biography. I am not even sure if we have read the same book. I found " Two-Gun Cohen" a fascinating and illuminating account of both the life of a man and one of the major historical events of the 20th Century. I have bought this book for friends, family and associates who have likewise found it quite engaging and informative. I must in fairness say that I know the author, Daniel Levy. The idea that the author, in Michael Alderton's words, is "incredibly superficial", unfairly objective", and "ill-informed" makes me feel that either Michael Alderton as an ax to grind or some other hidden agenda. Daniel is a Senior Reporter at Time magazine, where he is highly regarded for his talent and objectiveity. I know the meticulous and conscientious methods used by him while writing "Two-Gun Cohen". Over a period of four years Daniel circled the world twice in order to retrace all of Cohen's steps. He interviewed a vast number of people who knew Cohen-including those who had never spoken on the record about their relaitonship with him-and triple checked all his sources. Maybe P. T. Barnum had it right when he noted that people are easily duped. Cohen, who spent time in a side show, obviously relied on this for there is no denying that the tall-tale telling Cohen was quite a charmer. And while Mr. ALderton seems to have trouble separating the real Cohen from the myth,the rest of us thankfully have Daniel Levy's engroosing biography in order to understand the true nature of Two-Gun Cohen.

Painstaking research & excellent writing

I have known of Two Gun Cohen for years but assumed it would now be impossible to find out further details of his life. But Daniel Levy has done an incredible job of research and in bringing Cohen to life as he really was. As Cohen tended to brag or obscure a bit it cannot have been easy to find the real man. Cohen's life seems to prove that life really can be stranger than fiction. But for anyone interested in China and true adventure, this is the book. Dean Barrett (author: Hangman's Point)

A Man's Adventure, A Nation's Fate

First of all, I should say that my primary reason for reading this book was not because of some particular interest in the story of Two-Gun Cohen. My first attraction to this book grew from my interest in the history of China, and particularly modern China, which I date from the Macartney's mission in 1783. This book did not disappoint. It is a very useful addition to the study of China in the period from the 1911 revolution through the Communist revolution of 1949 and beyond. It gives very little insight into the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), but there is lots of stuff written on that period.
I have not read anything else by this author, so I cannot make comparisons to his other work, but I will say one thing: I like a guy who does his homework. This book is nothing if not well researched. That is, in fact, it's main strength. I used to be a country school teacher-believe me, I have heard every excuse in the book for why the homework wasn't done. And I have become weary in recent years of "historians" who pretend to be writing history, but in fact have no interest in what actually happened. Ever go to a library and try to get Gore Vidal's "Lincoln?" It's in the fiction section. Or how about Oliver Stone, who openly admits (without any sense of shame) that he plays loose with the facts? That kind of stuff sells to a nation of people who are products of the American public school system. But for those who really care about what actually happened, a higher standard must prevail. Daniel Levy holds to that standard, and even helps to establish it, because his careful workmanship serves as an example to those who would address the same period. Bottom line: this is just very good history.
Now to the story. This book addresses the question of who Cohen is in comparison with how he presented himself, or allowed himself to be presented. Cohen was not the "mover and shaker" that he is sometimes said to be. But he was not just a worthless pretender, either. As I see it, Cohen distinguished himself in two areas: He was a very good body guard for Sun Yat Sen, and he also had the dubious distinction of being a first rate gun runner. Other than that, he doesn't seem to have been able to get by without some kind of a hustle. He started life as a petty crook, and this set a pattern that really prevented him from having dependable, gainful employment when the chips were down. I don't mean that he could never get away from the life of crime. What I mean is that, because he took the easy way out as a youth, he never took the time to learn a trade. I always encourage young people to develop a marketable skill that they can fall back on if they ever need to. This is something Cohen never did, and there was a time in his later life when it really would have come in handy. While Sun Yat Sen was alive, Cohen was riding high. But after he died, and especially after World War II, Cohen suffered a long period of marginal or nonexistent employment. Nothing wrong with being an adventurer, but it really helps if you have a trade skill to take you through the dry periods.
Toward the end of his life, Cohen did manage to secure some very good work as a consultant because of his contacts in China. These connections, by the way, were genuine. It would be grandiose in the extreme to suggest that Cohen shaped the future of China. But he was well acquainted with some of those who did. That part of his self-presentation was not made up.
I gave this book five stars because it was so well researched. But it is also a very personal story of a man that I think, in some way, we all aspire to be. I respect Cohen for daring to step out and discover a world that so many of his peers shied away from. He was not satisfied with the ordinary. And he was in many ways a very likeable, if sometimes pathetic person. This was a very enjoyable book. It is not as quick a read as some others, partly because the author went to great lengths to verify his assertions. But I think any honest reader will find it to be a worthy contribution to the literature.

Ursula and Mirranda are sisters originally from Louisiana who thought the idea of putting into writing some of the conversations that women often have would make for some interesting reading. They both reside in small towns outside of Fort Worth, Texas and are currently working on their sophomore project, this time from the male point of view.

A Gumbo of Hot and Spicy Vignettes

Being a Black woman and negotiating our way in the world is what the authors, two sisters, Ursula Inga Kindred and Mirranda Guerin-Williams, attempted to communicate. How we feel about ourselves, our families, our relationships. So they set out to interview dozens of women to find out just what makes us tick. They found women who were willing to tell it like it is, straight, no chaser and uncensored.

While traditionally Black women have upheld Black men in their distress, today's woman is not always willing to nurse a man's wounded ego or insecurities at the expense of sacrificing her career or her heart. Ayoka, a professional woman, decided to end her frustrating marriage when it became apparent her husband had ongoing issues about the money she made and how she spent it.

Other topics covered are childhood, sex, dating, motherhood and friendship among other topics; all told in the women's own insightful words. There were discussions about the joy of motherhood and the pain of finding out their husbands cheated on them. One woman found out the woman next door, who was supposedly her friend, was having an affair with her husband. Others though were very candid about their own infidelities as well as dating married men. One particularly laugh out loud discourse had this reviewer just shaking my head at some of the antics. One woman told how she became angry at her married lover for buying his wife a new house and then when she found out he was cheating on her with yet another woman went to that woman's house and defaced his car.

There is a detailed section about sex, the first time, what kind, how women want it, and sex vs. making love. Self-image and self-esteem; how these women view themselves and the trials of finding themselves are discussed with candor. The recipes sprinkled throughout the text were an added bonus as the authors likened recipes for food to recipes for life. These recipes were culled straight from their mother's Louisiana kitchen. Gumbo and crawfish etouffee' were two of the mouth-watering treats that were symbolic of the spicy wit and frankness exhibited by bold and beautiful Sisters

The authors wrote a short introduction and closing but I would have liked to see more of their own comments. However, this is a worthwhile book and I recommend to all women if only to find out how other women think and feel.

This is a must have life manual for all!

I just want to give the authors of Sister Gumbo praise for such a wonderful and timely book! It is truly an awesome read! I have truly been blessed by each of the stories in Sister Gumbo. I am an avid reader and this book is completely different from any other book I've ever read. What I like most is that I can relate to so much of the women's experiences in the book. The stories are so candid that you begin to feel like you know the people in the book. I also love the way they describe in such great detail the women, places, meals, homes etc. When I read the book, I felt like my mother was right there giving me advice on life. In fact, it's filled with perfect advice for someone like me (a 30-something) who actively dates and hopes to get married and have children one day. Sister Gumbo is a must have "life manual' for sisters ages 21-90! Thanks again for such a great book. I wish the authors continued success with the book and I look forward to the next!

Life as a woman is anything but boring. Every day of our lives we experience a range of different things and often wonder if there is anyone out there who can relate. In Sister Gumbo: Life, Sex and More Sex, a collection of stories compiled by Ursula Inga Kindred and Miranda Guerin-Williams, there is an array or gumbo of experiences that any woman can relate to.

This book breaks down life experiences into several different chapters such as sex, self and advice. Within these chapters are discussions on friends, aging and other issues. Every topic relating to life as a woman is located in this book.

In reading Sister Gumbo: Life, Sex and More Sex, I felt as though I was having a conversation with an old friend. This book dealt with so many issues that I have experienced. As a reader I felt a kinship with these women and I believe you will too. I highly recommend this great collection of stories.

Inspiring!

Hurrah, you don't have to knit in order to felt! If you enjoy crafting with recycled wool knitted items, you'll love this new book. The projects are simple and inspiring, colorful and joyful. It transcends ages, inspiring me at 38 and my son at 7. This would be an inexpensive hobby with some reasonable profit potential. Start-up costs are low to none. You need scissors, needle, threads, thimble and ratty old wool sweaters to recycle into wool felt (by washer.) Many of the designs require a sewing machine, though if you were familiar with embroidery, you could handstitch instead.

Wonderful!

This book is exactly what I was looking for; a how-to book on fun felt projects. I am new to the world of felt and all it encompasses. Much of what I have found seems boreing to me; old-style and/or too crafty looking. This book is different, it has crafty, fun, funky, cute and colorful projects.

What I like:
-detailed, easy to follow instructions
-great step-by-step pictures
-very colorful and inspiring
-information on felt/felting that I have not found elsewhere

Here's a list of some of the patterns:
-baby earflap hat (+2 adult hats)
-bunny slippers (+ another pair of slippers)
-iPod case
-little purse
-back pack
-mittens
-baby coat (super cute!)
-plus many more

One thing to note- most of the patterns given need to be photocopied and enlarged. The book gives percentages to increase by, so this may be a point of interest for some of you.

I am super glad I bought this book and look forward to the many uses I will get out of it. It would also make a great gift.

Challenging and inspiring

This is not an ordinary felting book. It does have projects that can be done by a beginner, but mostly offers projects and ideas for intermediate/advanced crafters. Owning an embroidery machine is also an advantage for many of the projects. I really like this book, it offered ideas to do things with felt that I hadn't tried or even thought of trying. If you've worked with felted wool already, this is a great book.

In Queering the Moderns, Anne Herrmann revisits the narrative of literary modernism and the historical uses of the term "queer" to explore the emergence of identities specific to modernism. Roberts, who plays Marie Barone on the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, uses her TV character's preoccupation with food to underscore her own needs in this memoir. Her autobiography isn't a sexy tell-all, but it's honest and life-affirming. Roberts was desperate for love and attention. What she got was a hardscrabble childhood, two tough marriages and a career she adored. She repeats her mantra-"I am a survivor"-throughout the book, along with her recipes. These delectable treats-lasagna, chicken crepes, flourless chocolate cake-match moods or milestones in her life. It's a cute, though not innovative, way of breaking up her tale. Roberts's dad left at her birth, her indifferent grandparents raised her in the Bronx, and her mother never paid her a compliment. Still, by age 11, she decided to be an actress, and she got some terrific breaks, due as much to talent as tenacity. That she pursued her dreams while raising a son is laudable, especially with little help from her family. A hardworking actress fond of peppering her prose with homilies (e.g., "If you want life to surprise you, you've got to be open to it rather than defending against it"), Roberts saves the best part of her saga-the early years, the struggle, the triumphs-for the last third of the book. Still, readers will applaud her victories, even if the recounting is less than stellar.

Loved this book!

This is one of the best auto-biographies I have ever read. I just recently learned about Doris' book and am thrilled to have found it. She writes like she is talking to her best friend, with a great sense of humor. She's a quick-witted smart lady who knew where she wanted to go in life and followed through. For a plus, she includes a great recipe with each chapter; I will be making a few of them. I could hardly put the book down! If you're a big fan of Doris, this is a must read for you! It's a great book! Thanks, Doris!

Couldn't Put It Down

Doris Roberts is endearing in this very straightforward book about her life, including who she has known in the New York Theatre scene. She has a full theatrical history and has known and interacted with many New York City actors. She includes her time on the "Everyone Loves Raymond" TV Series, but she tells us about her beginnings also. I loved reading this book. I did not anticipate such a good read. Also: the bonus is a recipe at the end of each chapter, yes, including Steak Pizzaolla! (The one recipe she was reluctant to give Debra, in the show).

Richard Burt is Professor of English and Film and Media Studies, University of Florida. He is the author of Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares: Queer Theory and American Kiddie Culture; Licensed by Authority: Ben Jonson and the Discourses of Censorship; and the editor of Shakespeare After Shakespeare; Shakespeare After Mass Media; and The Administration of Aesthetics. Burt also co-edited a special issue of Exemplaria on “Movie Medievalism” and held a Fulbright scholarship in Berlin, Germany from 1995–96.

Richard Burt's ideas on the loser and kiddie culture underpin his investigation of Shakespeare at the periphery of American popular culture. Academic scholarship has been slow to address these rewritings and appropriations of the playwright and his work up until now.
However, one of the many joys of reading Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares is to discover just how accessible it is to scholars and non-scholars alike. Dr. Burt's playful ruminations upon the intellectual winner as a loser figure and vice versa is both entertaining and startlingly poignant. Finally, Unspeakable ShaXXXpeares is a book which opens the way for further exploration of Shakespaeare's multi-faceted presence in the mass media.

Dick Burt Kicks Ass

Professor Richard Burt of UMass-Amherst has produced an excellent demonstration of his own theory of looser-criticism, which perfectly captures the most useful trends in literary studies. Bungee-jumping off of the tip of the ivory tower, Burt thrusts forcefully into the depths of pop-culture, kiddie-culture, hard-core porno and the rest of what is most dynamic and influential in contemporary American culture. Reveling the velvety folds of Americana, Burt finds (gasp, choke) Shakespeare, alive, well and living in da hood. His erudite, fearless and shameless investigation explains both the continuing relevance Shakespeare's work, and the significance of Shakespeare as a pop icon, in (apparently) ALL facets of US culture. By rights this intervention ought to make Burt, a man who constantly promotes his own fascination with celebrity, a media celebrity himself (next on Springer: "You read my book, bitch!"). This is a volume that must be read by all who profess a serious interest in Shakespeare and/or popular culture. And therefore never send to know for whom the porn was made - it was made for thee. Word.

Burt's book's a stunner

Combining glittery high theory with `low' culture materials, Richard Burt has written an absolutely brilliant, path-breaking study of Shakespeare in contemporary mass media, focusing mostly on film, but discussing t.v. sit-coms, comic books, and novels as well. Most of these films and other texts have never before been archived or examined by any other Shakespeare critic. What is particularly original about Burt's book is the way he views what he concedes are often trashy films, including some hardcore pornographic adaptations, from the vantage point of the critic as loser. Instead of trying to redeem mass culture `trash' as politically dissident, transgressive, or subversive material, as most critics doing cultural studies now do, Burt questions whether the trashy material he examines can be recycled, and opens up as a profound, troubling question whether criticism (avowedly political or not, high-minded or low-minded) can ever fully transcend questions concerning its own potential triviality and stupidity. This is a very sophisticated and challenging book, but is very accessible and very entertaining. Burt will soon emerge as the Stephan Greenblatt of post-millenial Shakespeare criticism. His book is a truly remarkable read!

A Fun Summer Read
By Guiding Light's Biggest Fan
I am a long-time Guiding Light viewer and have just finished reading Lorelei's Guiding Light: An Intimate Diary. I found it to be a very enjoyable, interesting, and sexy. It's the perfect beach read and provides plenty of insight into the Lorelei Hills character (or as we learned, personality of Beth Raines). The conclusion the show had for the storyline was, in my opinion, too fast-paced and did not provide us viewers with the closure we needed. However, this very revealing book did just that. Beth Chamberlin proves by writing this book that she is not just another pretty soap opera face, rather an intelligent, gifted writer with an honest understanding of her character. I would recommend this book to all watchers of Guiding Light with even the slightest interesting in Lorelei Hills.

Couldn't Put It Down

On the soap opera Guiding Light, we learned in August 2001 that beloved Beth Raines had been swept away in a flash flood. She was down in Mexico getting a divorce from Edmund Winslow, the wrong guy who controlled her. This decision came after she was imprisoned in a tower at the castle in San Cristobel, and fell to make her escape. After narrowly escaping she fled the hospital to get a divorce, and Edmund followed her to get his fortunes from her, having her kidnapped and forced to sign papers which would entitle him to a share in her fortune. She was near the bank of a river when Edmund told her to get up, for all her life she'd been doing what men had told her to do, so she took a stand and said no, and she was swept away in a flood, and presumed dead.
When Beth returned, she was Lorelei, a very different person. Beth suffered from multiple personalities. This book shares the backstory of what happened to Beth in her three months she was missing, what she was doing as Lorelei, as she was trying to piece together who she was. It's a very interesting read, I couldn't put this book down. It has everything, romance, gossip, intrigue, mystery, suspense, and more! It's a must have for the die hard Guiding Light fan, or even if you don't watch the show you can enjoy this book as well. The actress Beth Chamberlain wrote this book, and it is an intimate diary with every secret detail, and she has a promising career in writing, she wrote this very well! Overall check this out, its a great addition for the Guiding Light fan or the fan of romance novels. A must read!
