About the Author
Richard W. Etulain was professor of history and director of the Center for the American West at the University of New Mexico from 1979 to 2001. He is now a full-time researcher and writer residing in Portland, Oregon, specializing in the history and literature of the American West. He has written or edited forty books, including The American West: A Twentieth-Century History (1989, coauthored with Michael P. Malone); Re-Imagining the Modern American West (1996); Researching Western History (1997, coedited with Gerald D. Nash); Telling Western Stories (1999); The Hollywood West (2001, coedited with Glenda Riley); and New Mexico Lives: A Biographical History (editor, 2002). He is also editor of Does the Frontier Experience Make America Exceptional? ( Bedford/St. Martin's, 1999). He has served as president of both the Western Literature and Western History associations.

In this followup to The Official Splatter Movie Guide of 1989, John McCarty and his dauntless team of splatter scholars have assembled another 400-odd reviews of the messiest movies ever made. As in the first volume, the films represent every manifestation of the splatter aesthetic, from the abjectly trashy (The Corpse Grinders) to the best of Hollywood (The Silence of the Lambs), including horror, sci-fi, action, thrillers, documentaries, and even a few comedies; McCarty's foreword includes some perceptive remarks on the genre-crossing properties of graphic gore. This volume also boasts some 24 pages of stills (not all of them well chosen) and arresting cover art. Once again, English-language movies predominate: European splatter is represented chiefly by the major Italian directors, and only one Asian entry appears.

This volume improves on its predecessor in a couple of ways. First, there are several appendices, including an index of directors and one called "Carnographic Pleasures," which groups films in categories such as "Simply Putrid," "Yuppies Get Slaughtered," and "You Think Your Family's Dysfunctional?"--a valuable aid in planning video theme evenings. Also, the reviews themselves are more extensive; the writers clearly decided to indulge themselves this time, and their remarks often have decidedly more entertainment value than the films. This is not to say that the book exists primarily as an excuse to lambaste cheesy movies, but McCarty and company do not spare the vitriol when it's called for.

Informative, intelligent, and amusing, this volume and its companion make a valuable resource for any viewer with a taste for the grisly. --Mary V. Burke

Skillfully blending history, memory, and observation, philosopher-cum-mountain guide Jack Turner's Teewinot is a year in the life of Wyoming's Teton Range, as told by a true believer. Certainly he captures a sense of the mountains--not only their jagged rock, hidden valleys, and beaten trails, but the flora, fauna, and folks who inhabit them. He navigates this territory with the poise and purpose of a skilled climber--feeling for holds, finding one, adjusting balance, reaching out again in a different direction, pausing on those features whose nuances fit best, but never lingering too long. His narrative meanders between peaks, seasons, communities, periods of history, and moments in time. While lacking much of the intensity in tone and the invitation to controversy of his previous work, The Abstract Wild, Teewinot is still underscored by a deep environmental consciousness and concern for the future of the wild. Turner notes, for instance, the numerous and varied ways Homo sapiens have scarred his beloved wilderness: the trash left behind by campers, the wildlife pushed out of their usual haunts, the rash of development in Jackson Hole. But he also manages to skirt the role played by guide companies like Exum (his employer), noting only that "Exum, of course, is a part of the problem--a small part." Maybe this is denial, a practice he labels "the first line of defense." Or perhaps he relies on the climber's "prizewinning talent for dissociating emotion" to shield him. Bursting with a sense of place, Turner's earnest journal of a year spent in Grand Teton National Park, where he works as a mountain guide, is a rewarding reading experience replete with ravishing observations of nature. From his Wyoming cabin, he looks out on majestic Mount Teewinot (the name comes from a Shoshone word meaning "many pinnacles"). He counts among his "Thoreauvian neighbors" deer, ospreys, great blue herons and porcupines, as well as moose that occasionally sleep on his porch. "We are a guild, our labor a craft," he declares, referring to fellow guides and park rangers who come together three or four months each year, united by a love of mountains and the West. Turner, a seasoned mountaineer who has led expeditions to India, Tibet and China, and has taught philosophy, takes us on exhilarating climbs, including one to the summit of the Grand Teton, as he casually drops apt references to Sartre, Rilke, Wittgenstein, Matthew Arnold, Chinese painting, Buddhist chants, Zen poems. But this is no Shangri-La. Illegal snowmobilers and poachers abound; "extreme skiers" and "extreme snowboarders" keep rescuers and medics busy. Turner himself lives on the edgeAjust half a mile from an active geologic fault capable of triggering a 7.5-magnitude earthquake tomorrow. A passionate conservationist, he bemoans the frazzled state of this "most compromised park in the national park system," a sanctuary littered with hunters, a major airport, motorboats with no speed limits. Highlighting the fate of the vanishing grizzly bear, he makes a compelling plea for preservation of "wild forms of being," and envisions a respectful covenant between people and wild animals such as mountain lions and wolves. Teewinot is a mountain in the Grand Tetons, a magnificent mountain range that appears to rise straight up out of the ground. Turner, who has lived in Grand Teton National Park for the past 16 years and works as a mountain guide in the summer months, aims at showing the reader why the range is magnificent. Through the four seasons, he writes of the mountain's flora and fauna, its weather, and about his experiences hiking its trails and climbing its peaks. The abuse of the wilderness, a theme of Turner's first book, The Abstract Wild, and his references to philosophers may at times distract the reader from the book's main focus: the beauty of the Tetons. For the tourist, the title is a good supplement to Arthur Frommer's Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks (IDG, 2000) and for the climber to Leigh N. A year in the Grand Tetons

As a lover of the Grand Tetons I couldnt wait to read a book written by a guide who has spent much of his life in the Teton range. Jack Turner has guided many clients to the Grand Teton summit as well as climbed a majority of other peaks in the Teton range. If you are expecting a spell binding thriller about mountain climbing, you will be dissapointed. However, if you want to get a feel for the experience of simply being in the Teton range during the 4 seasons, then this book is for you. Turner's knowledge of wildlife and plantlife in the Teton range is amazing, as is his ability to describe the ever changing seasons in the mountains. His Zen religious influences are also referenced but never heavy handed as he manages to weave the Zen philosophy with the seasons and changing climate. Turner does get to be a bit preachy on the subject of man encroaching upon natural habitats and the destruction of our wild eco system; but his love for the natural beauty of the Tetons allowed me to forgive this minor annoyance. Turner takes us through the seasons of the Teton range in a smooth flowing narrative that is satisfying and enlightening. I would recommend this book for those who enjoy the Tetons as well as others who are simply interested in one person's perception of one of our finest wildlife areas.

Now I'll have to learn to climb

Jack Turner has yet again produced a book with a sense of place and sometimes even an aura of the Tetons where he has climbed and guided for 40 years. Although this book is more relaxed and less intense than his powerful "Abstract Wild" it nevertheless provides a mature outlook on life in the Tetons. Turner is not afraid to reveal himself in this book and yet does not fall into sentimentality, the accounts of climbing and the experiences with friends are especially moving such as the tragic consequences of a fall for his friend Kim Schmitz who suffered in incredible agony after breaking just about everything or the death of Leigh Ortenburger, and yet there are great times too like the remarkable skiing of Mark Newcombe and Turner's love of Rilke and Haiku which also appeals very much to me. Surrounding these images of lost friends and at times extreme experiences is the national park itself which never leaves the scene always providing the glue which binds the whole together. Turner has a remarkable grasp of both the scientific aspects of the park such as the geology and the biology/ecology which is added to the feel of it at the same time, I mean the sense of being experienced when the mind is stilled, something which is always enhanced in a wild area where existence is forced upon you no longer escapable such as in a big city. Through the stories of the park, the people and his own very human outlook you can't help but feel Turner loves where he is and lives for it wholeheartedly, his own journey into philosophy, Zen show how deeply he thinks about his life and the natural environment. I also feel that he loves what he does and where he is so much that he not willing to give it up to go that extra distance needed in really deep meditation. My own experiences in this mean that joy can be found everywhere whether it is a city or in natural surroundings. Jack Turner is a man that I would like to meet, his energy, his dynamic outlook, his interest in just about everything is not that common nowadays. A wonderful book of a man and his love.

Much Better Than Expected

This beautifully crafted narrative presents a month-by-month, May through April, description of a 58 year old mountain climbing guide's recollections and reflections on living and working Grand Teton National park. Teewinot is the nearest peak visible from the author's seasonal cabin in the park.
Each chapter is an essay about climbing, wildlife, plants, environmental management or personality profiles related to events that happened during that month. The book begins in May because that's when spring begins to overtake winter, covers the intense summer climbing season, describes autumn wildlife viewing treks to remote corners of the park and tells about winter ski treks. The lifestyle and habits of climbing guides, rangers and other professional outdoors people are profiled throughout.
One of the best aspects of the book is that while it's written by a technical climbing guide and has interesting stories about both guided and highly challenging climbs, the book goes beyond that to reflect the author's wide-ranging, eclectic interest and knowledge about everything related to the Tetons.
Highly recommended to anyone interested in mountaineering, national parks, wildlife and the contemporary American West. There are 11 unexceptional color photographs, two maps with sufficient detail to follow the ground covered in the essays, and a six-page bibliography of reference sources for the Tetons and other topics covered, although many books cited are probably available only in large reference libraries.

Number three in the series did not disappoint. In addition to giving us a fascinating character in Miss Molly Murphy, each book focuses on a different segment of New York City society in the early twentieth century. Mining the experience of being an immigrant at Ellis Island to Tammany Hall politics to Greenwich Village bohemians, Rhys Bowen has done her research and brought this era to life. I enthusisatically look for to the rest of the series!

In a hard-hitting survey of left-wing thought on the American system of policing and punishment, James (Ethnic Studies/Univ. of Colorado) presents 26 critical and radical perspectives of varying quality. Introducing essays on issues from capital punishment to the special problems confronting African-Americans, gays, and women in the prison system, and on the use of policing and imprisonment to suppress political dissent, James notes that the US has ``the highest incarceration and execution rate in the industrialized world.'' The authors in this collection leave no doubt why: class war, racism, sexism, and other reactionary isms. Though these essays are replete with statistics showing racial and other biases in policing and sentencing, primary sources sometimes aren't cited for startling statistics, such as one author's statement that criminal suspects in Arizona in 1996 were mostly white, while most people incarcerated there were black. Several contributors sound familiar rhetorical notes from the old and new left (``surplus value,'' ``prison-industrial complex,'' ``critical race feminism''). And some of the analyses, like Angela Y. Daviss analogy of the modern prison system with slavery, go over the top. Yet many of the contributions are persuasive and passionate. Robert Meeropol's haunting ``Testimony,'' part angry polemic, part sorrowful memoir of his parents Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, advances a well-reasoned and eloquent argument against the death penalty; Adrien K. Wing offers a sensitive study of black female gang members; Steven Hawkins protests against the execution of children; Margaret and Michael Ratner detail the abuses of the grand-jury system; and Larvester Gaither brings anti- black brutality shockingly to life. Elder's new book is not for the timid and weak of mind. In his second book, the popular California radio host and author of the bestselling The Ten Things You Can't Say in America, accuses the U.S. government of "liberal fascism," denying its people the freedom to work hard, make their own choices and reap the benefits of their labor. He takes us back to a vision of America as he says the Founding Fathers intended it to be: less government, more personal responsibility; less red tape, more freedom; less dependency, greater wealth. With an arsenal of facts and real-life evidence, Elder assails many of what he terms societal myths. Racism in America? Almost nonexistent, he declares. Public education? Get rid of it. The mainstream media? Obstreperous in its liberal bias, shameful in its denial. No special group or interest escapes the author's indictment. The essential purpose of government, Elder asserts, is to protect its citizens. As evidenced by the September 11 tragedy, he argues, the government cannot adequately defend its citizens when its elected officials are pouring time and money into a vast array of pet projects. It is time, Elder declares, for a reshuffling of priorities. Although somewhat slapdash, this remains a provocative charge. Elder's voice is refreshing even when you disagree with him.

Elder, the host of a Los Angeles radio show and the syndicated television show Moral Court, brings his conservative viewpoint to an array of issues. His major point is that the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack happened because the government is too busy providing services--health-care insurance and consumer protection, for example--to adequately provide for national defense. Elder lambastes what he calls "victicrats" looking to the government to correct social ills, including racism, sexism, and social inequities. He skewers a number of the so-called protected classes of Americans, noting, for example, that the Americans with Disabilities Act "cripples" the disabled by increasing perceptions that hiring them is too expensive, and equating the comparative dangers of obesity with those of smoking and wondering why smokers are under attack but the obese aren't. Many readers will agree with some points on government intrusion, but only readers with similar political views will appreciate his arguments. Vanessa Bush

Right on the money...

Larry Elder follows up his first book, "The Ten Things You Can't Say in America" with "Showdown," a call for a return to limited, localized governance and liberty linked to personal responsibility. Elder's not the first to defend the Founder's design, not even the first black - Walter E Williams and Thomas Sowell have been championing less government for decades, but Larry Elder adds a strong voice to that choir and proof that what the Left likes to say about Libertarian blacks, that they are "out of step with mainstream black America," is wrong. In fact, Elder would retort that people like himself, Professors Williams and Sowell, Condy Rice and Colin Powell ARE more indicative of the mainstream than their more visible Left leaning cohorts like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.
"Showdown" is a very well researched book. Elder backs up his points meticulously. He chronicles Santa Monica's disastrous "Living Wage" bill that recently passed...a bill that's already cost the area lots of entry level jobs. And the new California movement of "Visitablity" - an ordinance that would force private home owners to install ramps and other means of access, apparently for disabled door-to-door salesmen.
Throughout "Showdown" Elder shows a government run amock. It's a quick and entertaining read and one that'll make you think twice about so much of what the media passes off as gospel.

A good book, but more detail would be appreciated

I had heard of Larry Elder before, but since I live in an area where his radio talk show is not carried, I hadn't heard or read any of his positions until I got this book. For the most part, they are very good. Elder advocates a very common-sense policy, stressing the need to examine the actual results of political policies, rather than supporting those that merely sound like they were formulated with good intentions. Many government programs created with good intentions nonetheless have deleterious effects, and too often, to speak out against them is to be vilified by people who won't look beneath the surface. Elder exposes many such cases.
The one point of Elder's that I agree with most strongly is that irresponsible parenting is the single greatest problem our country faces. The importance of this issue cannot be overstated. If children are performing poorly in school, the problem is often that their parents are apathetic about their children's education. If children are getting into too much trouble, the problem is often that parents aren't taking their roles as disciplinarians and role models seriously enough. Irresponsible parents breed maladjusted children, who in turn grow into problematic adults. Obviously this problem is not one that can be solved by a few simple policy changes -- the final responsibility rests with the individual, not with the government -- but Elder offers a few steps we can take in the right direction.
Now, on to what I think is the book's major shortcoming. Mr. Elder is a libertarian (He is now a member of the Republican party, but still holds the same libertarian point of view.), and libertarians tend to favor some pretty drastic changes in our approach to government. Consider the following three statements, taken directly from the so-called Ten-Point Elder Plan:
1. Abolish the IRS.
2. Reduce government by 80%.
3. Take government out of education.
Those are three tremendous statements. If you say you're in favor of, say, legalizing marijuana, few people will have difficulty understanding what you want to happen. But if you declare that we should eliminate the income tax (and all corporate taxes as well, according to Elder), you've got a lot of explaining to do. One cannot simply declare the IRS dissolved; it must be done very gradually, with a very specific approach in mind from the outset. The same goes for all three points listed above, not only because they are colossal in scope, but because they are interconnected. For example, you can't responsibly reduce income until you reduce expenditures, and you can't move away from public schooling until taxation has lessened enough that people will be able to afford to pay for education individually instead of collectively. What's more, you can't simply shut down all government-run schools at once. The transition must be smooth enough that no one is left without opportunity.
The problem of public education is one of the most daunting in the United States. The difficulties in the system are so numerous and so tangled with one another that it's very difficult to know where to begin. Perhaps privatization is the answer, but unfortunately, Elder doesn't have a lot to say on how it would be done, only that we should do it. Extreme positions like the ones listed above tend to turn people off quickly just because they're so far outside mainstream political opinion, and if one expects them to be taken seriously, one had better be prepared to offer a detailed treatment of just how those propositions could be shaped into reality.
That is the main problem with the book. Even if a reader gets through the whole thing and agrees with nearly everything Elder has to say, he may very well close the book after the last page, hesitate, and ask himself, "Just what am I supposed to do about it?" Although I recommend this book to everyone, I think that a truly useful treatment of libertarian ideals will require a good deal more analysis than you'll find here.

GREAT IDEAS AND EYE OPENING FACTS

Larry Elder is a libertarian, and powerfully documents his thesis that the country and its citizens would be better off if we returned to the type of limited government and personal responsibilty envisioned by the founders of our country as outlined in the Constitution. As he states, "Americans are good enough, smart enough, competent enough, and forward-thinking enough to control their own lives with little government interference". He provides extensive examples of how most government programs limit our freedoms, reduce our wealth, and usually are counterproductive due to their unintended consequences.
No topic is off limits to the author, the host of a top rated LA radio talk show who overcame an attempt by pressure groups opposed to his views to organize an advertiser boycott and drive him off the air. After all, a Hollywood celebrity who is a libertarian is threatening enough to the ""toe tag liberals" and victicrats; when he is black it is imperative that he be discredited or silenced since he is viewed as a "traitor to his race" in Larry's words.
The book strongly makes the case that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 should cause us to focus our efforts on the country's self defense and should have made us aware of how the involvement of the federal government in areas that are Constitutionally defined as the responsibilty of individual citizens or local officials has led to the diversion of both personnel and financial resources away from its primary duty of the protection of its citizens.
Among the issues that the book discusses are the problems of our educational system, race relations and environmental policy. It illustrates how media bias interacts with the desire of both major political parties to retain their power and thus creates the pressure for an ever expanding role for the federal government.It shows how the threat of terrorist action is likely to accelerate these tendencies. His historical analysis is quite interesting and he takes no prisoners, Republican or Democrat.
I tremendously enjoyed the book, and even though I am politically active and very interested in public policy the book includes many fascinating facts and quotations of which I was not aware. (All of which are meticulously footnoted.) I did not rate it five stars because I thought that at times it jumped around rather than concentrate on facts and arguments furthering his main point.While these were interesting and often outrageous, they actually diverted the reader's attention. Several of the chapters should have been more focused; in this regard his previous book THE TEN THINGS THAT YOU CAN'T SAY IN AMERICA was much better at making his points. At times SHOWDOWN almost seemed more like the transcript of an excellent radio talk show than a book. Also, while I share the author's beliefs in the need for limited government, a return to Constitutional principles, the counterproductive nature of such programs as the war on drugs, and the innate goodness and ability of the American people to solve their own problems and manage their lives, I think his call to President Bush and the other politicians currently in power to voluntarily reverse the course started upon by FDR is naive. We probably need structural reforms enacted to accomplish his goals and he does not touch on these and the real showdown that would accompany their implementation.

Can't Believe I Hate a Buffett Book

This book is downright awful. Let me warn you - stay away. I agree with the other reviews. There are detailed facts about things totally unrelated to Jimmy Buffett or even the point that the author is trying to make. I guess if you took out all of the irrelevant lines, the book would be only 20 pages of nothing new.

Eng has a lot of facts about the life of Jimmy Buffett but that's about all. Those of us who have been fans of his since the very beginning already knew most of them. Too much rambling speculation about Jimmy's possible ancestors. Eng does not have near the writing talent that Jimmy does so he should not have done this bio. His motivation seems to be celebrity and riches. If you want to read a really good book about the life of Jimmy Buffet up to age 50, "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" is the best book I have read in many years. But what would else would we expect from a master storyteller?

I found this book to be superb. Buffett did not like it being written.

However, it is very well written and full of interesting facts.

Did you know that Hugh Taylor and Alex Taylor and not just James Taylor contributed to the "Volcano" album?

Did you know that Bob Mercer, the President of the now defunct Margaritaville Records is married to Margie, Jimmy Buffett's ex-wife?

A very interesting and informative book. Don't listen to these sheep who reject it only because Mr. Buffett did not like Steve Eng writing it.
