Although some recipes are interesting, the book requires somewhat of an advanced knowledge of Irish cooking. Some required ingredients are rare in the U.S. A bit difficult to use.

Amazon.com Review
The Three Brethren, an ancient brooch of precious stones, is at the center of this intricate, episodic, multifaceted novel. In fact, the brooch is more interesting than the narrator, Katharine Sterne, whose obsession with its rubies, diamonds, and pearls takes her across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. As Katharine says, "My life is part of the story of the Three Brethren, not the other way around.... The Brethren has been the turning point of many lives, and mine is only one."

Each of the stones that comprise the brooch has its own cast of characters. The most interesting of these are the Levy brothers, two Iraqi Jews who make their way to London to create a crown for the coronation of Queen Victoria and are ultimately swindled out of the most precious of the Brethren's jewels. The book's chronology is difficult to follow, as Katharine's discoveries take her, and the reader, back and forth in time and place, from Istanbul in the 15th century to a Japanese fishing village 500 years later, where Katharine's love affair with the Brethren's last owner seems tacked on, like an afterthought. Still, this complex novel, written by a poet whose love of language shows through on every page, will appeal to those who share a fascination with precious minerals. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Diamonds may be forever, but tracking down a 15th-century set of rubies is fraught with minute-to-minute tension for jewel dealer Katharine Sterne in British writer Hill's latest, a remarkably accomplished and literate novel that incorporates both historical and intriguing thriller subplots. Obsessed with finding a legendary stone set called "The Three Brethren," Sterne starts her search in Turkey, where she must first locate a rich, eccentric British woman who teases her with a lead about the whereabouts of the gems. As Sterne's quest continues, Hill introduces a parallel historical subplot dealing with the provenance of the stones. A key part of the collection's history is traced through the journey of Salman and Daniel Levy, Iranian jeweler brothers who emigrate to England, where they work on an important project for Queen Elizabeth I. Masterfully juxtaposing alluring historical detail and exotic locales as he narrates the story of the gems, Hill sends his protagonist on a globe-trotting adventure that culminates with Sterne's trip to Japan, where she unearths the final clues while trying to stay one step ahead of a nefarious, unnamed third party. Hill does a better job of bringing history to life than he does the driven but emotionally repressed Katharine Sterne, while the Levys fare better as a more lively counterpoint to the stone's fascinating and illustrious history. The dexterous combination of historical scope, lush yet precise storytelling, and twist-and-turn subterfuge and intrigue makes this sophisticated novel both challenging and edifying. (Jan.)Forecast: While Hill has previously published a novel (Underground) and a short story collection in the U.K., this is his first book to appear in the U.S. Picador's bookstore promotion contest, whose winner will receive a gift from Tiffany's, and an eye-catching jacket featuring Queen Elizabeth should attract attention to what could be one of this season's sleepers.

From Booklist
Katharine Sterne is a modern-day huntress who is fixated on acquiring the long-lost medieval jewel called the Three Brethren. Named for the three great rubies flanking its enormous central diamond, the Brethren has graced the shoulder knot of a duke and the regalia of English queens, but the stones will know no single master as they elude all who try to harness their beauty throughout the centuries. Sterne is only one of many admirers intoxicated by the splendor of the piece, following it from Europe to Asia as a full-time occupation and at great personal peril. Hill conveys Katharine's all-consuming obsession with finding this jewel by writing her as a willful one-dimensional character, living from a back pack and moving from one exotic locale to the next in a spellbound state of determination. This novel is definitely an impromptu lesson in gemstones and a fascinating account of a jewel's movement through history. Hill is quite successful at breathing life into an inanimate object and demonstrating an intriguing obsession of a different kind. Elsa Gaztambide

The writing is superb
By Harvey Ardman
The other reviewers have talked about plot and character and I agree with the positive things they've said. But I want to talk about something else: the language. Tobias Hill is an extraordinarily talented writer. His economy of language, his inspired word choices, his awesome power of description, his ability to create living people in a few deft phrases are not only impressive, they are writing to savor.
Reading Hill's book is like eating truffles. You read slowly because you know there are only 396 pages and you don't want the book to end. I would offer sacrifices to the Gods of writing that Hill be prolific.
One more observation: every page on this book contains surprises--surprising dialog, suprising events, surprising characters...the kinds of surprises that real life presents you with, if you're lucky. I know this is fiction, but it has a quality of reality that is rarely found in fiction. If I could give it six stars, I would. I find myself buying copies and sending them to friends.

A true treasure hunt
By dSavannah
The Love of Stones is a real-live treasure hunt, the story of a 25-year-old woman searching for The Three Brethren, a long-lost brooch of jewels. It's a fascinating read, terse and intense, going from one century to another, following the stones through the ages and following Katharine Sterne, the main character, in her search.

Katharine is strange, tense, obsessed, uncaring. We never see her fully, but then, we don't really have to. It doesn't matter what she looks like. We never really learn why she is so obsessed to find and possess this jewel, but I think I understand. She is driven by the same thing that makes someone climb mountains, and another person paint.

There are unanswered questions - where does she get the money to finance her five-year search? How did she learn of the jewel in the first place? Who were the people following her? Then, what happened after the narration stopped? Did she go see her sister & niece? Did she find Hikari? Was she content?

The work feels incredibly... authentic, real. As if this really did happen, as if there really is a jewel called The Three Brethren that many people are searching for. Tobias Hill obviously did a great deal of research for this. He clearly lived in the places he wrote of - Turkey, Japan, England - or seriously immersed himself in literature and academic information from the area. And his knowledge and description of jewels and the jewel trade - in depth, believable.

I wish the author had included a timeline. It got VERY confusing as to what happened when, and where Katharine was, and who had the jewel at what time. It would have been a nice reference to review as I wound my way through the story.

The writing - amazing. Terse, descriptive. I could smell, see and feel the places described in the book. The author also did a great job of showing, not telling - for instance, we know that the brother, Salman Levy, is addicted to his opium, but never in the book does it actually say that. When Katharine was in danger, my heart rate increased.

This book is very different than typical literature. Highly recommended.

Cool quest
By Candace Siegle, Greedy Reader
This intelligent novel succeeds on many levels--so many that I was thrown into a temporary panic when I thought I'd left it at a coffeeshop (it had slid under the seat of the car). It is a fine piece of historical novelization as well as a fascinating antiquarian thriller. But Tobias Hill has chosen a protagonist who distances readers from her part of the story, which is too bad because what she's up to is pretty compelling stuff.
Katharine Sterne is after The Three Brethren, a glorious brooch once worn by Queen Elizabeth I. The search takes her to Turkey and Japan--exciting locations, beautifully described--as well as to mysterious corners of London, where two hundred years before a pair of Iraqi Jews arrived with a fortune made by finding a clay pot of priceless jewels. Are they the same jewels? How did the Iraqi brothers find them? Will Katharine make the connection?
The reader will care a lot more about the jewels and the brothers than about Katharine, who is much like Peter Hoeg's Smilla without the chink in her armor. She is such a cold character that the romance Hill wrangles for her is not believable. Still there is much else to recommend "For Love of Stones" and Katharine actually takes up little emotional or physical space in the book. I wish that Hill had created a character as rich as that of his marvelous stones.

The world's oldest and best-organized conglomerate now reveals management techniques everyone can use. Unlike other guides to business, The Mafia Manager shuns theoretical verbiage to present the philosophy of leadership that founded and captained "The Silent Empire" through centuries of expansion and success. Some sample pearls of wisdom:

-"Be sure you understand what your boss has ordered before you act on his command. What if you whack the wrong guy, or bomb the wrong joint...Learn the art of asking questions."
-"Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer."
-"Don't become involved in any office political battle without first asking yourself, 'What's in it for me?' and then 'What's in it for them?'"
-"If you must lie, be brief."

In a manner that hints of power and money, author "V" lays down guidelines for business garnered from his years of service in the Mafia. Is he kidding? Perhaps. But the level of common sense displayed could fool the reader. Each of the three sections is filled with riffs on the main theme; part two, "Managing Others," covers such topics as hiring, firing, senior advisers, leadership, productivity, and rules, all sprinkled with appropriate company aphorisms and syllogisms. Machiavellian? You bet. Chauvinistic? For sure. But the book is also a great antidote to the disease of serious, boring, humorless corporate-speak tomes. Barbara Jacobs

A realistic view of the business world
By A Customer
This book offers advice that is more practical than one would initially expect. Having worked in the bureaucratic jungle of D.C. for a few years, I can say from experience that the author does quite a good job in explaining the nuances of the business world. This book cuts through a lot of the b.s. that is taught in a typical MBA program and offers some interesting insights into managerial thinking (or lack there of). Also, the author has a style that makes retention rather easy. While I still value humility and compassion in the workplace, the "Mafia Manager" portrays an environment that is more truth than fiction. Most management books are absolute garbage - this isn't one of them.

Straight and to the point information
By A Customer
V. keeps with the original theme of The Prince which is heavily founded on the basis of force capability. The author did make some updates to the 500 year old theories which are much needed to clarify and bridge the gap between politics in Machiavelli's days and modern business. Also the book goes straight to the point in all of the chapters, which many philosophy books avoid. A great time saver, and very effective in the way of retention.

Worth the Time and Money
By A Customer
I read this book 2 years ago and picked it up again for guidance!!! Its common common sense. The references to human ego, are on target! However, don't get confused; this book isn't on how to be a leader. This book is for leaders that find themselves in organizations (old and new) bound by red-tape, corporate beuracracy, and "...the family business" -- yet hope to reach the top "...of a bone pile."

The Greater Generation: In Defense of the Baby Boom Legacy, by Leonard Steinhorn

"Lenny Steinhorn presents compelling evidence that Boomers significantly shaped―and improved―their times. This is a counterintuitive examination of a generation that is far more complex and far more influential than is commonly believed."
―Frank Senso, former CNN Washington bureau chief

While the Greatest Generation deserves our praise for surviving the Depression and fighting in World War II, the Baby Boomers, this book argues, are in many ways as great a generation―if not greater―for how they have advanced equality and freedom at home. It's fashionable to mock Boomers as self-involved and materialistic. But what really is the true legacy of the Boomers?

To understand how Boomers have changed America, think back to the 1950s―but without the nostalgia. Women were kept at home, minorities were denied their dignity, homosexuality was a crime, and anyone who marched to a different drummer was labeled un-American and viewed as a threat.

Today we live in a far more open, inclusive, tolerant, and equal America than at any other time in our history. And that's because Baby Boomers, from the Sixties onward, have fought a great cultural war to free America from its prejudices, inequalities, and fears. The Greater Generation tells the story of this generation's accomplishments―and finally gives Boomers their due.

From Publishers Weekly
Baby boomers have been vilified as noisy, self-centered, childish, elitist and self-indulgent. Steinhorn forcefully and gracefully defends his age cohort against these stereotypes in a paean to the generation that has forever altered the face of American culture. The so-called "greatest generation," he says, imposed a cultural complacency whose worst elements included racism, sexual inequality and anti-Semitism. Boomers rebelled against their parents' values, striving to create an inclusive society that would recognize the contributions of all of its members. Defying and denouncing authority, the baby boomers protested against an unjust war and challenged an unethical political system. Even after the clamor of the 1960s quieted down, boomers refused to tolerate environmental violations, continued to challenge racial and sexual discrimination, rejected religious intolerance and defied racial and sexual taboos. And despite an apparent conservative turn in America, says Steinhorn, boomer values have in fact permeated our society to the point where a younger generation takes them for granted. This powerful book by Steinhorn, a professor at American University's School of Communications, reminds us that boomers continue to provide the methods and the impetus that are moving many young people today to challenge political arrogance, deceit and jingoism.

From the Inside Flap
“Lenny Steinhorn presents compelling evidence that Boomers significantly shaped—and improved—their times. This is a counterintuitive examination of a generation that is far more complex and far more influential than is commonly believed.” —Frank Sesno, former CNN Washington bureau chief
While the Greatest Generation deserves our praise for surviving the Depression and fighting in World War II, the Baby Boomers, this book argues, are in many ways as great a generation—if not greater—for how they have advanced equality and freedom at home. It’s fashionable to mock Boomers as self-involved and materialistic. But what really is the true legacy of the Boomers?

To understand how Boomers have changed America, think back to the 1950s—but without the nostalgia. Women were kept at home, minorities were denied their dignity, homosexuality was a crime, and anyone who marched to a different drummer was labeled un-American and viewed as a threat.

Today we live in a far more open, inclusive, tolerant, and equal America than at any other time in our history. And that’s because Baby Boomers, from the Sixties onward, have fought a great cultural war to free America from its prejudices, inequalities, and fears. The Greater Generation tells the story of this generation’s accomplishments—and finally gives Boomers their due.

“The Greater Generation reminds us that today’s legacy of social justice, diversity, and individual freedom didn’t just fall from the sky; it’s a consequence of a hard-fought progressive struggle fought on the home front by a morally engaged American generation.” —Marty Kaplan, Air America radio host and director of the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern Califormnia Annenberg School for Communication

Bronx Boy: A Memoir, by Jerome Charyn

Jerome Charyn's three-part memoir of his boyhood in the Bronx has all the imagery and color of an enchanting and entertaining novel -- someone has said that it captures the author's world so accurately that it can't possibly be true. Bronx Boy, like The Dark Lady of Belorusse and The Black Swan, both selected by The New York Times as Notable Books of the Year, is a tour de force of memory and imagination. In this third and final installment, the higher truths of a masterly writer's art render moot the question of exactly where the real world ends and Charyn's imagined world begins.

Still known as "Baby" although a younger brother has come along, young Charyn makes pocket money delivering eggs, belongs to a group of 12-year-old wannabe gangsters that meet in a soda shop run by an ex-con, and spends afternoons telling stories to the adoring wife of a wealthy Russian émigré. He becomes famous for his black-and-tans -- a concoction of coffee ice cream, seltzer, milk, chocolate sauce, crushed pecans -- and "a touch of bitterness that may have been the Bronx." So famous, indeed, that he walks away the winner of an annual black-and-tan contest sponsored by the real-life top gangster called "The Little Man" -- Meyer Lansky.

In Charyn's hands, the often ridiculed Bronx is a magic place, as full of odd and wonderful characters as a three-ring circus. And at the center of it all, young "Baby," not as lucky in love as he would like to be, drinking it all in, putting his own extraordinary take on it. Charyn looks back at this with his singular vision, and records it all for us with the skill of the fine writer he is. This is a delightful and often moving story of a childhood that could only have been lived in New York in the fifties, a New York experience that could only have taken place in the Bronx of those days, a growing-up saga that could only have been captured by this singular author.

From Publishers Weekly
By age 14, Jerome "Baby" Charyn had been hired by Jewish gangster Meyer Lansky to mix ice cream sodas. He'd established an on-again, off-again relationship with a gang headed by a heroin addict and pimped for the gang leader's girlfriend. He was familiar with Flaubert and Dostoyevski. He'd helped his blind mother (who looked like Joan Crawford) to deal a better hand of poker and, as a pimp, earned a better salary than his father (who looked like Clark Gable). Charyn, the author of more than 30 books, mostly fiction, writes this final installment of his three-part memoir (after The Black Swan and Captain Kidd) in fast, darting sentences: "I danced with Anita, her chest against mine. I was the luckiest lad at junior high. But there wasn't even a stirring in my pants. I was like a neutered cat." His affection for the East Bronx of his childhood is clear, and he turns it into a mythic place ("It began to feel like some angel was protecting the gang; each one of us had an angel on his shoulder..."). Despite a disclaimer at the end, though ("certain characters, places, and incidents portrayed in the book are the product of imaginative re-creation"), the book sometimes strains credulity, and the characters occasionally feel too alike. Still, there is no denying Charyn's storytelling abilities, and readers of the trilogy's first two volumes will enjoy this third dose of Bronx lore.

From Library Journal
This is the third memoir by Charyn, author of more than 30 books, including the Isaac Sidel crime series. The other memoirs are The Dark Lady from Belorusse and The Black Swan. The narrator is Baby Charyn, an unsupervised adolescent in the 1940s Bronx. The young tough, who had never left the borough, appears magically in one neighborhood or another without so much as boarding a trolley car, bus, or subway. Written in the tabloid prose of the Sidel genre, it is a similarly adolescent boy's fantasy depicting one-dimensional characters. Women here are sexually available and find Baby irresistible. Men fall under his mother's spell. The story lacks some context and depth and at times gets facts wrong or distorts them. Charyn misnames a borough president and a Bronx hospital and mentions a juvenile detention center that did not yet exist. He also omits a significant Jewish perspective. One neighborhood boy spent years in a refugee camp, writes Charyn, but where and why is unexplained. Faigele, Charyn's Eastern European mother, a celebrated card dealer, spoke Russian, he writes. In reality, however, she more likely conversed in Yiddish with the other Bronx Jews. Recommended for Charyn fans. Elaine Machleder, Bronx, New York

From Booklist
This very funny and almost hallucinatory "memoir" is, as Charyn states, "inspired" by his memories but quite fictionalized. It is written in an arc of feverish adolescent hormonal tumescence, as Charyn at 13, then called "Baby," recalls the egg man, the luscious and drug-addled Sarah Dove, the gangster Lansky, and his own sort-of gang in the Bronx of the early 1950s. Baby Charyn protects Sarah Dove from her johns, makes black-and-tan sodas better than anyone, and finds time to read to Faigele, his mother, who is going blind. Gambling, rumbling, and drug dealing spring from these pages, along with Masha the Russian aristocrat, Miranda the gang Amazon, class wars from the Grand Concourse to Crotona, and lust--always lust. Words are Baby's weapon, for the most part, and he wields his storytelling as a sword and as a shield from the force of his memories. You may not believe a word of it, but you will enjoy the ride. Inside the Mesopotamian Frankenstein Created by the US
By Ami Isseroff
Unholy Babylon is the detailed chronicle of the creation of a monster - Saddam Hussein - aided and abetted by the United States and other western powers. The US needed Saddam, in their estimation, to counter the Iranian threat. The US and European countries were willing to tolerate and to support internal totalitarianism and terror, suppression of dissent by force, gas warfare and other war crimes against internal enemies and Iran, as long as Saddam would fight the Iranian menace. The British looked the other way as Saddam murdered dissenters on their soil. Everyone looked away as virtually every country in Europe, plus the US and Canada, lined up to supply Saddam Hussein with long range rockets and essential atomic bomb technology.
Adel Darwish is eminently qualified for the job of investigating Saddam's empire, having been a veteran foreign correspondent in Iraq before he was thrown out for reporting a major missile testing mis-hap and thus revealing Saddam's secret missile development program.
The hard cover edition of Unholy Babylon has been updated and corrected and is probably well worth the extra investment.
Read this book to understand what is happening now. It has been the source book (sometimes not acknowledged) for several "informed analyses."...

A saga of tawdry double dealing

By Paul William Roberts

Unholy Babylon: The Secret History of Saddam's War

By Adel Darwish and Gregory Alexander

....

ANYONE PUZZLED by President George Bush's hypocritical actions during the period immediately following his order reining in Desert Storm's dogs of war will be terminally confounded by Adel Darwish and Gregory Alexander's meticulously- researched saga of the tawdry double-dealing strewn along the road leading to this confrontation with Saddam Hussein.

Back when he was CIA director, Bush was personally responsible for the mass slaughter of Kurds by the Baghdad regime, having urged them to revolt, armed them, then failed to provide any backup. Now, as President, he's betrayed them again, and in much the same way, standing in the ditch he calls high moral ground while Iraqi helicopter-gunships and troops butcher countless thousands of men, women and children. If this is "an Iraqi internal affair" in Washington's eyes, then so was the Nazi holocaust. With 200,000 or so troops still within Iraqi borders, Bush apparently sees nothing wrong with upholding Saddam's sovereign right to slaughter any religious or ethnic faction he feels inclined to. Why?

Unholy Babylon provides answers to this and numerous other tricky questions, raising still trickier questions in the process. Darwish is one of the most respected and authoritative investigative reporters covering Middle East affairs. Egyptian by birth, he currently corresponds for The Independent, which consistently provided critical commentary of the war while most Western media waved the Stars and Stripes like hapless vassals. His co-author, "Gregory Alexander," is regarded by those who are aware of his actual identity as one of the two or three supreme experts on international arms trading. He employs a pseudonym and lives in conditions that make Salman Rushdie's arrangements seem positively freewheeling. I'm betraying no confidence by saying he was once a British army officer serving in the Middle East, and then actually worked in the international arms industry for several years before conscience called.

Although people like Judith Miller (Saddam Hussein And The Crisis In The Gulf) and Samir al-Khalil (Republic Of Fear) have done yeoman's work covering similar territory, Darwish and Alexander, besides having access to stratospherically high-level source material, manage a level of concision and readability that makes coherent sense of close to a century's worth of history, much of it deliberately obfuscated, partially erased, or hopelessly tangled to protect the guilty. Who the guilty actually are is Unholy Babylon's main theme.

The book confirms that Iraq's plot to annex Kuwait was made known to most Arab leaders by February, 1990. Both the CIA and the Egyptian intelligence service warned their respective governments repeatedly, stating unequivocally by late September that Saddam's troops would definitely be moving across the border within days. Presidents Bush and Egypt's Hosni Mubarak chose to ignore these warnings. Why?

Reading this chilling and repulsive tale of big politics and even bigger business, you find yourself yodelling why? every 10 minutes. Why, for example, didn't we see much evidence of the $ 50 billion or so in high-tech arms sold by the U.S. to Saudi Arabia over the last few years? Why was America aligning itself with countries that had human rights records at least as bad as those of Saddam's Ba'athist regime they were conscripted to topple? And why did Bush encourage Iraqi Kurds and Shiites to embark on a civil war if he had no intention of supporting them - particularly since he'd stopped Stormin' Norman from trashing Saddam's war machine when the opportunity was available, and thus knew full well the rebels did not stand a chance against the kind of punch Baghdad could still deploy against them?

The truth is - as Unholy Babylon makes abundantly clear - that Washington prefers Saddam, the monster it made, and a Ba'athist reign of terror in Iraq to the prospect of a Kurdistan which could end up controlling the world's second largest oilfields, and a Shiite state in southern Iraq that would inevitably find itself a satellite of fundamentalist Iran. America's fear of Iran, the authors reveal, is indeed so great it must be considered the major factor in the decade-long cultivation of Saddam Hussein's regime - a cultivation that paralleled the lavish U.S. cossetting of the Shah's Iran, entailing techno-military assistance of the first order, including hands-on involvement by numerous American allies in the construction of weapons facilities more advanced than any outside North America or NATO. They became Desert Storm's first targets.

Besides naked greed and the mega-politics of oil, the only thing approaching reasons and answers this book offers is the suggestion that U.S. foreign policy has more to do with chaos and instability than it does with putting order in the "new world order." As long as the U.S. is creating the chaos, it can operate within it quite happily and much more easily than it could within, say, a truly democratic Middle East.

Darwish and Alexander make no comment on the diabolical facts they began assembling even before August 2, 1990 but I'd like to meet the reader who does not finish Unholy Babylon with a sizzling sense of rage, despair and abject frustration aimed at those we have allowed to govern the allegedly-free world and who have abused that privilege by licensing a wrecking-crew to exploit and enslave the wretched of the Earth.

Authors examine the effects of international greed

Unholy Babylon presents a detailed account of the world's financing of Iraq's military machine and the history of events that led to the invasion of Kuwait and the diplomatic posturing prior to the Persian Gulf War.

Authors Adel Darwish and Gregory Alexander display a sophisticated knowledge of Arab politics and history and the ruthless practices of the international arms trade. They combine extensive research with broad contacts and experience, giving Unholy Babylon an authority and depth that is both fascinating and chilling.

Darwish and Alexander contend that world leaders ignored warning signals, bungled messages and recklessly pursued their own short-sighted goals in the years and months that led up to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Again and again, they missed opportunities to curb Saddam Hussein's belligerence, even as Iraqi tanks rolled south towards Kuwait.

Furthermore, leaders of the East and West share the blame for helping create Saddam Hussein's mighty war machine.

Generous loans and financing from foreign governments and banks allowed Iraq to spend between $80 and $105 billion on armaments from 1980-90. During the mid 1980s, Iraq became the world's leading importer of arms. Even after the end of its war with Iran, Iraq continued to pump billions of dollars a year into weapons of mass destruction.

A few diplomats and intelligence officials raised murmurs of alarm, but these invariably were side-stepped by businesses and ministries of trade and commerce who were anxious to sell military wares to virtually any nation willing to buy. Effective embargoes were few.

The effects of international greed were compounded by anxious government and military leaders who were willing to do almost anything to stop the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Better Saddam Hussein than the Ayatollah Khomeini, they reasoned. Saddam was pleased to take all the armaments they could offer.

Unholy Babylon makes clear that despite official government policy, most nations are prepared to turn a blind eye when arms sales boost local employment and stimulate the GNP.

As U.S. President George Bush trumpets a new policy of international arms control without controlling arms, the world seems to have learned little. Saddam Hussein is bloodied but unbowed. Billions of dollars worth of armaments continue to flow to the Middle East.

...Readers bemused by the peaceniks' vitriolic attacks upon the Americans for the victory over Iraq will find Unholy Babylon most enlightening.

Written by two respected experts on the Middle East, Adel Darwish and Gregory Alexander, the book is sub-titled 'The Secret History of Saddam's War' and reveals much background material not generally known in North America, including Western bungling which allowed Saddam to invade Kuwait with impunity.

Meaty and detailed, yet readily understandable, the book will repay study by anyone wanting more than he finds in the media to understand the Gulf War.

... Adel Darwish and Gregory Alexander in their 1991 book, Unholy Babylon, [reported] that Washington was extremely alarmed by Qassim and the Communists, and therefore wooed the Baath Party as an alternative. When the Baath briefly came to power in 1963, the CIA passed to Saddam Hussein, probably an agency asset, a list of hundreds of Iraqi Communists, whom the new regime liquidated. The Baath was in the wilderness when the coup collapsed, but came back to stay in 1968. Again, Darwish and Alexander report assertions of US backing for the 1968 coup, confirmed to me by other journalists who have talked to retired CIA and State Department officials.

From Chaos to Coercion: Detention and the Control of Tuberculosis, by Richard J. Coker

In the 1980s and early 1990s, New York City experienced an unprecedented outbreak of tuberculosis. Inadequate healthcare services, an increase in social alienation of the poor, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains led city health officials to respond with draconian policies to ensure compliance, including the use of detention of non-infectious individuals--sometimes for up to two years--that violated individual civil liberties. The New York TB epidemic has since been controlled, but this public health triumph has come at great cost. This gripping narrative of medicine and morality raises ethical issues that are of increasing importance in the world of modern medicine. Richard J. Coker warns the international community against assuming a fortress mentality, advocating a more just balance between health, liberty, and the burdens society should be prepared to accept in the pursuit of both.

From Library Journal
New York City suffered an outbreak of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the early 1990s. The disease threatened to expand beyond its usual victims in the homeless, drug-addicted, and incarcerated populations to afflict society at large. The public health system responded with detention and the coercive treatment of individuals who were noncompliant with treatment protocols, and the epidemic abated. Coker, a British physician, examines the social, legal, medical, and ethical issues surrounding this chapter in the history of tuberculosis. He presents historical and epidemiological evidence linking tuberculosis to high levels of institutionalized social inequity. And he shows how the New York City response, while successful in turning the tide of the epidemic, failed to address these root social causes and perhaps even deepened inequities by violating the rights of individuals and providing a smokescreen for the inadequacies in our political and healthcare systems. The book's careful scholarship belies its passion. It is a thoroughly documented and convincingly presented argument that inspires a reassessment of cultural assumptions and reflection on the epidemiological effects of these assumptions. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries and for collections with a focus on the history and sociology of medicine, social justice, human rights, or ethics.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Tuberculosis-control workers in the United States may very well be stunned by Richard Coker's assessment of their efforts in From Chaos to Coercion: Detention and the Control of Tuberculosis. After all, the rates of tuberculosis in the United States and specifically in New York City, which is the focus of Coker's analysis, have dropped precipitously since the height of the epidemic in the early 1990s. Yet Coker argues that these accomplishments relied too heavily on the use of coercion, both in the detention of noncompliant patients and in the use of directly observed therapy.

Directly observed therapy, by improving patients' compliance with drug therapy, has been lauded as the key to the recent success of American tuberculosis-control efforts. In programs of directly observed therapy for tuberculosis, health care workers strictly supervise the administration of medications to patients in clinics, in the patients' homes, or on the street. Because so many persons affected during the recent outbreak of tuberculosis had concurrent problems, such as psychiatric illness, homelessness, or injection-drug use, officials involved in the implementation of directly observed therapy have emphasized the need to assist patients with social issues. Indeed, one tuberculosis-control official has even characterized directly observed therapy as TLC (tender loving care). Many patients receiving directly observed therapy have expressed genuine thanks for the attention they have received.

Yet Coker remains wary of this type of program. "Just as coercion may be explicit," he writes, "it may be implied and allied to gentler approaches and other forms of leverage." The success of directly observed therapy with noncompliant patients in New York, Coker argues, rested on the threat of forcible confinement. Thus, directly observed therapy, while couched in patient-centered terms, is in reality the backbone of what Coker calls a "paternalistic, authoritarian system" of public health control.

Not surprisingly, Coker is also strongly critical of the use in New York of actual detention for patients with tuberculosis who remained noncompliant despite interventions such as directly observed therapy. In 1993, in response to a threefold increase in cases of tuberculosis, including several outbreaks of highly lethal multidrug-resistant strains, the city amended its health code, clarifying the power of officials to detain persons with this disease. As in the past, the short-term detention of actively infectious patients with tuberculosis was permitted. But the new code also allowed officials in New York to detain persons who were no longer infectious but were merely completing their course of therapy. As of 1999, the city had detained more than 200 such persons in a special facility, Goldwater Memorial Hospital, for periods of as long as two years.

While acknowledging that New York detained only 1 percent of the patients in the city who had tuberculosis, Coker objects to the way in which decisions about detention were made. Health officials chose to confine patients by predicting who among them would probably not complete drug therapy without such a drastic intervention. But such a calculus, Coker argues, did not explicitly take into account the actual threat to public health that such patients presented -- especially once they had become noninfectious. In a long discussion of the assessment and perception of risk, he contends that there was little science behind the choice of patients for confinement at Goldwater.

As a result, according to Coker, the perception of risk was "value laden." Even though New York officials did not consciously discriminate against poor persons, members of minority groups, drug users, or persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, and often enabled such patients to complete their treatment without coercive measures, these were exactly the people who nevertheless wound up at Goldwater. What angers Coker is that the patients who did not comply with instructions for their medications could not have done so. With largely unaddressed problems such as homelessness, psychiatric illness, and untreated addiction, he argues, such patients were never given the opportunity to do what their doctors recommended. "When an option is not made available," he states, "it is impossible for individuals to fail to comply with that option."

Coker builds on this argument in the final chapters of his book, mounting a harsh attack on Western societies that provide inadequate services to the poor and then blame them for their transgressions. He greatly rues the growing rhetoric that emphasizes the duties and responsibilities of individual citizens as opposed to the obligations of society to assist the less fortunate. Indeed, at times the reader almost forgets that this is a book about tuberculosis, as Coker discusses the politics of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair and the consequences of "laissez-faire Thatcherite libertarianism." Yet Coker is absolutely correct to emphasize the connection of politics and economics to the control of tuberculosis, which, after all, has long been a "social disease" primarily affecting the poor.

There are holes in some of Coker's arguments. For example, his claim that we must address society's economic and political inequalities in order to achieve long-term control of tuberculosis has never been proved. In New York, rates of the disease, especially drug-resistant disease, have plummeted, while the social ills affecting the city persist. Although a better standard of living would undoubtedly help to control tuberculosis both in the United States and in the Third World, attempts to use the disease as a wedge to induce social and political change have never worked in the past. In addition, while criticizing recent tuberculosis-control efforts as too heavy-handed, Coker also acknowledges that in 1992, New York "public health officials had little option other than to implement coercive health measures."

Still, Coker's book deserves to be read by those involved in tuberculosis control and other public health campaigns. It is telling that the most aggressive challenge to the use of coercion in New York has come from Coker, a British clinician, rather than from the local advocates for civil liberties and patients' rights who criticized, but ultimately condoned, the strategies of the health department. Coker is also correct in urging that programs of detention implemented during periods of crisis be reconsidered as the threat to public health diminishes. Finally, given the current epidemic of tuberculosis in the Third World, Coker's reminder that the disease is connected to global politics could not be more timely.

Good Book with Format Problems
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
This is the book you want if you're a student, working-class type, or arty bohemian who wants to see London. It's a good guide to the affordable residences, night life, fine art venues, and everything else that makes you want to visit London on a budget. It gives frank appraisals of West End shows, steers you toward the best galleries in the best museums, and tells you where you can get a high-class meal on a tight budget. Everything is broken down by neighborhood, so you can plan your itinerary so everything you take in on a certain day is reasonably close together. And it even gives you pointers on how to find work, volunteer opportunities, and academic programs if you're dissatisfied with just doing the same old tourist baloney.

The twin problems this book suffers are physical: it's too big and the type is too small. The dimensions of the book are too large to fit in a pocket, so you'll have to carry it in your attache case or backpack. Copy addresses and directions into a pocket-sized notebook if you need to check on them on the tube or out on the street, because being seen with a tour book is an invitation to pigeon pluckers. And even as the book itself is too large to conveniently conceal, the type is so small that you have to squint to read details and descriptions. Note to the Let's Go people: not everybody who buys your books is a kid anymore.

On balance, though, this is probably the book you want if you're not blowing your nose on pound notes. It's clear, individual descriptions are concise, and it's all very helpful. If you want to see London, if you want to let it into your pores in a way most tourists never get to do, and if you want to do all that on the kind of money real people tend to have, this is your book.
