About the Author
Brian Jay Corrigan is a professor of Renaissance literature at North Georgia College and State University. He is also founder of the North Georgia Theatre Project and has written two books on Renaissance drama. He won the Josiah W. Bancroft St. novel prize, as well as first place in the Florida First Coast Writers' Festival, for The Poet of Loch Ness. He lives with his wife in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Masterfully Crafted!!

I read this book on the way to work and on my lunch hours. When I had to (reluctantly) put this book down and get back to work, I found myself worrying and wondering about the characters, as though they were real people in real-life situations.
Loch Ness -- the setting for the majority of this book, is a keeper of secrets -- its depth unknown, its denizen(s) equally mysterious -- and Brian Jay Corrigan uses this lush, dark, brooding and mysterious setting to underscore and reinforce the inner-workings of the souls of the citizens of this book.
The Poet of Loch Ness beautifully brings to our attention the question of what REALLY is under the surface of our actions, our intentions, our lives -- who are these people with whom we interact -- people we may have known for a lifetime, or a moment? What looks malevolent may in fact be a blessing -- an act of love so deep, deeper perhaps than the mysterious Loch, that pre-conceived notions about an individual's actions may in fact be far from the truth.
This novel uses a first-person narrative in the form of Perry Miggs' wife Perdita - when she speaks I like the use of Italics (stressing perhaps her vacillation, her weaknesses, and perhaps her health, as well?). I also like the choice of her name -- "Perdita" - sounding like "Perdido", the Spanish word for "lost"). When the novel changes over to a third-person narrative, it still retains the richness of each character's observations and individuality. And these characters, including strong but sensitive Andrew Magruer to odd Mr. Trent, to childlike but stronger-than-you-think Kira, all turn out to have a presence as commanding and mysterious as the Loch itself.
As for Perdita's husband -- is Perry Miggs really a mumbling absent-minded professor? Is he really out to cause someone great harm? Why is he so secretive -- is he a stalker? Is something unsavory afoot?
Lost love, deep love, the supreme sacrifices that only love can make -- are all woven dexterously into these plots and subplots. Even the brogue (which in just a very few places I found hard to follow) interspersed throughout the book adds to this rich broth. And what I would call comic-relief also does wonders throughout the novel to further bring these characters into a fullness of life that is much appreciated on the printed page.
What a marvelously crafted book! I SHALL read it agin, even if only to get to know these characters all the better.
I'm also very glad that the feline character in this book fared well. I have been known to stop reading any book whose animal characters came to harm from the hands of a human.
Andrew Jay Corrigan -- you have masterfully crafted a tapestry of love, resolve, determination and yearning. Kudos to you for enriching our souls.

The Poet of Loch Ness

This book takes place mostly in Scotland. It is about love, triangles, and sacrifice. It was hard to put down. The language was skillful and beautiful. I found myself thinking about various aspects of the book long after I finished it. Corrigan captured how a person presents herself/hiself and one makes judgement based on what is seen. Dig a little, not much even, and a whole other entity exists with complications you could never imagine. You realize what you have seen is the armor used to hide what is really there. I was moved by a note at the end of the book written by the author indicating one notion in the book was from his personal experience. As a person who loves to write, I was inspired but the skill of the author to take a personal thread and weave it into the cloth of the tale. I highly recommend "The Poet of Lock Ness."

What Lies Beneath the Surface

Author, Brian Jay Corrigan, writes this, his debut novel, from the depths of his heart. Conceiving the plot while the life of his own beloved wife was threatened by primary pulmonary hypertension, he explores the lengths a man would go to insure the sweetest form of happiness for the woman he loves.
What appears on the surface of this story involving the return of married woman Perdita Miggs to St. Andrews, Scotland and her first love, only hints at the depth of sacrifice the "poet of Loch Ness" willing makes to facilitate his wife's most intimate needs.
When the Royal Geographical Society awards Perry Miggs grant money to study Nessie of Loch Ness fame, Perdita, his wife of thirteen (13) years finds herself back in Scotland where years ago she attended college and left the love of her life --- man's man, rugged loch guide Andrew Macgruer. Now she finds she must confront her old feelings, unconsummated yearnings that have intensified in the marinade of good memories, and reconcile them with the solid comfortable love she shares with Perry.
Her first encounter with Andrew brings a new vitality and reality to old dreams; Perdita quickly blossoms in Scotland, shedding all the years that separated her from Andrew as she checks her mid-western wifely persona at the door and pursues her old life and her Andrew like a woman possessed. From a distance, Perry watches her, as entranced with her and her transformation as he is with his search for the mythical beast.
Corrigan expertly buttresses the complicated interplay between Perry, Perdita and Andrew with a solid secondary cast of eccentric highlanders that detail the magical setting with both good common sense and human vulnerability. Most notably, Corrigan soars from the ordinary in his side story of an aged love triangle and releases the parent in all of us when he displays the simple love between Andrew and his son.
In the real world, beneath the smooth surface of Loch Ness, the legendary monster, Nessie, supposedly sluices through the water's depths until periodically she appears--- truly an unnatural occurrence that defies the belief of even the actual viewer. Similarly, all the major players in "The Poet of Loch Ness" swim in ostensibly serene waters until they in turn fracture the surface of their outward identities to reveal a piece of a truth that is as profound as Loch Ness and as elusive as Nessie herself.
Bottom line: The language used in "The Poet of Loch Ness" sparkles, moving forward easily and clearly like the Loch itself in the early sunshine. The characters, real and formidable know when to recede and allow the beauty of the author's full intent to ring out unimpeded. Bravo Mr. Corrigan. I look forward to your next offering and celebrate with you the good health of your wife.
