My kids wanted to read it over and over...

My boys (ages 4 & 2 1/2) really like this story. It does a good job of telling the story of the nativity, and in a way that is accessible to very young children. My only problem with the book is that Mary does not look very much like traditional depictions of her. She is shown without any head covering throughout the book, and it is very unlikely that she would have been uncovered, due to the social norms at that time. She is also wearing a sleeveless dress, which I also find unlikely. All in all, a wonderful depiction of the Christmas story. (Oh, and my kids love to lift the flaps too!) We plan to purchase more books in the series.

wonderful for little ones to understand

My little boy received this when he was 1; however, this Christmas he hasn't been able to put it down. Lifting the flaps seems to help him grasp the story better. One of the best books I've seen for the littlest ones to understand the Christmas story!

My three year old loves this book. The flaps help tell the story and make it very exciting for the little ones. I can't wait to buy others in the series. Most lift and flap books aren't of this quality.

The Wisdom of the Popes by Thomas J. Craughwell is a kind of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations of the papacy--a collection of statements about various religious and social issues by popes going all the way back to St. Peter. Beginning with theological topics ("Who God Is," "Jesus Christ, True God and True Man," "The Holy Spirit"); Craughwell proceeds to consider papal wisdom regarding worship and ethics ("God rewards nothing but charity, for charity alone honors God," wrote Clement XI in 1713); and finally to papal pronouncements about such controversial matters as slavery, the Holocaust, and communism. Each of the book's 21 chapters is quite short, offering little analysis or historical context for its quotations. Nevertheless, The Wisdom of the Popes is a provocative resource for readers seeking to understand some of the Church's timeless teachings, and the book will surely compel many of those readers to dig more deeply into the questions it raises.

This book belongs in every Catholic home.

Good reference source

If Mr. Craughwell had just given a collection of statements from the popes over the last 2000 years this book would be great. If one is looking for a collection of statements by the popes then buy this book. The problem that I have with the book is the introduction/commentary that Mr. Craughwell offers at the start of many of the chapters, especially the commentary at start of the chapter on the Mass. In the prior chapters he showed how the popes have always helped the Church understand in a new way the truths that have been revealed to the Church since the begining. But in the chapter on the Mass he how the post Vatican II Mass has been a mistake by Paul VI and has led to a decline in the Church. I personally don't think he is right but that is another matter. So my suggestion is buy the book and skip the commentary/ introductions.

Pulitzer Prize–winning Lincoln biographer Donald and Holzer (Lincoln at Cooper Union) bring together the Old Gray Lady's coverage of the central events in the 16th president's life and tenure, beginning with the Lincoln-Douglas debates. The paper came late to these dramatic oratorical shows and predicted (rightly) that Douglas would take the cake. Indeed, up through the 1860 Republican convention, the Times didn't imagine that Lincoln had a chance of getting elected to any post in Washington; when he did win the presidential nomination, the paper declared "Underdog Wins!" The Times supported the new president, but shouted "Wanted—A policy!" when, about a month after his inauguration, Lincoln seemed unable to formulate a response to Southern secession. (Lincoln stashed a copy of this piece in a file labeled "Villainous articles.") On its heels came another villainous headline, "Wanted—A Leader!" The Times printed the Emancipation Proclamation as well as the Gettysburg Address—and led the nation in mourning Lincoln's assassination. The editors' annotations, interspersed throughout, help interpret the primary sources. Lincoln buffs will enjoy going back in time with this delightfully antiquarian anthology. (Nov.)

Each of the editors of this volume has written numerous books on Lincoln (Donald's Lincoln, 1995, being the best extant biography). Here they combine to extract Lincoln reportage from the Civil War version of theNew York Times, then a local newspaper. That local slant gives two passages detailing Lincoln's visits to New York the most vivid eyewitness colors. Times correspondents wrote in the prolix style of the era, noting prosaic, newspaper-selling detail about Lincoln's appearance, his immediate surroundings, and his extemporaneous remarks. The Times reports from Washington feel more historically generic, for Lincoln was not accessible to reporters and preferred to communicate either directly with his incessant stream of visitors or via his formal speeches, proclamations, open letters, and messages to Congress. Extracted verbatim for this volume, Lincoln's great documents bespeak a less-mediated way of receiving news than occurs today. David Herbert Donald has twice won the Pulitzer Prize in biography, and his book Lincoln won the prestigious Lincoln Prize. He is Charles Warren Professor of American History and American Civilization Emeritus at Harvard University. He also is the author of We Are Lincoln Men: Abraham Lincoln and His Friends.

Harold Holzer is cochairman of the 2009 U.S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and senior vice president at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is the author or editor of twenty-three books on Lincoln and the Civil War, most recently Lincoln at Cooper Union, which won a 2005 Lincoln Prize.

A Man for All Times

Two of the best of Lincoln's men, David Herbert Donald and Harold Holzer, have edited a book every person interested in Abraham Lincoln and/or newspaper coverage in the Civil War era should own.

While a solid effort throughout, I found the second half of this book the most interesting. The reports printed in the New York Times on the last days of the war through the assassination conspiracy and its aftermath have a striking immediacy.

The report carried in the Times on Walt Whitman's talk on Lincoln given in New York City, some twenty-two years after that dreadful day of April 14, is an especially fine close to a valuable book on our nation's greatest president.

This Bible/book cover is just what you need if you are looking for an attractive and easy to carry book cover.
The tapestry is woven into a very lovely dipiction of an angel proclaiming, "PEACE BE WITH YOU".
A pen/pencil holder is located convieniently, both on the left and right when you unzip and open this cover.
On the outside, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Peace Angel tapestry appears on each side, no matter from which direction you view it. On one side of the outside of this cover, you will find an opening where you can tuck in notes, etc. The opposite side has a protective zippered opening for even more storage of pens, papers, etc.
I'm very pleased with this item, and I would buy from this line again.

Best Preschool Devotional We've Found So Far

This is the best preschool devotional we've found so far. We actually own two copies of it. We bought a used copy on here (because it's out of print...grr), and wore it out. So we then bought a new copy (second-hand...again, out of print). It's well-written, biblically-grounded, gives some fun activity suggestions, and has cute illustrations. The devotion topics are always relevant and work really well for character training. Sometimes I wish the memory verses were a little more life-applicable and less dependent on the context of the story, but I won't take away any stars for that because you could easily pull a different memory verse for your child that relates to the story. Great way to get your kids started with a daily devotional and prayer time. I HIGHLY recommend this book. My only major lamentation is that it's out of print.

Excellent for young children!

I put these bibles on my baby shower registry. Now my girls are 4 1/2 and we are still reading this bible every night. The stories are simple to follow, yet clearly explain right and wrong from God's perspective. I have watched my twins just listen (from age 12 mo) to doing the activities listed at the ends of the story. I look forward to them reading the stories to me soon. This is an A+ recommendation for any parent.
