From Library Journal
This urbane and charmingly illustrated volume will please both the armchair traveler and the intrepid tourist. Although Wood offers canny and often original advice on the theory and strategy of touring, this book's strength lies in the well-conceived essays on Chinese history, culture, and contemporary life keyed to the interests of the traveler; they are light enough to be read on a Chinese train, sound enough to serve an introductory reader, and delightfully erudite to boot. The "further reading" is a useful annotated selection of literate travel books and fiction. This edition appears uncorrected from the 1988 British edition; unfortunately the Beijing Massacre of last June makes the hopeful comments on contemporary China outdated. Still, this ranks with Petra Haring Kuan and Kuan Yu-Chien's Magnificent China: A Guide to Its Cultural Treasures (LJ 9/1/87), and is highly recommended.

Honeymoon in Purdah: An Iranian Journey, by Alison Wearing

With a love of travel, Alison Wearing invites us to journey with her to Iran--a country that few Westerners have a chance to see. Traveling with a male friend, in the guise of a couple on their honeymoon, Wearing set out on her own at every available opportunity. She went looking for what lay beneath the media's representation of Iran and found a country made up of welcoming, curious, warmhearted, ambitious men and women. With humor and compassion, Wearing gives Iranians the chance to wander beyond headlines and stereotypes, and in doing so, reveals the poetry of their lives--those whose lives extend beyond Western news stories of kidnapping, terrorism, veiled women, and Islamic fundamentalism.

Amazon.com Review
Twenty years after the Iranian revolution, most westerners still imagine Iran to be a warren of anti-American rhetoric, terrorism, and fanatical repression, especially of women. Not surprisingly, only an unusual woman would choose to travel there, and Alison Wearing is certainly that. "I refused to believe that such a place of unalloyed evil truly existed," she writes. "I like to look for saints where there are said to be demons." Since it is the only country the world traveler could not imagine going to alone, she takes her fussy, gay roommate Ian, along with a fake wedding certificate and a story that they're on their honeymoon. Then she dons a black cloak, scarf, and chador (the full body covering required by Shiite Islam) for a five-month journey from the Caspian Sea (breaking into the Shah's ramshackle summer palace) to the holy city of Qom (and Khomeini's shrine) to a hidden Zoroastrian prayer site (where she faints from heat stroke). From the moment she steps into the country, she's surrounded by Iranians touched by her eagerness to learn about their country. There is the housewife who challenges her to a game of Ping-Pong in her long robe and scarf, offering food to her guests in between killer serves, and the Anglican minister who is "wholly enthralled by the art of living." There is the couple who spirit her away to a mountain oasis when she complains of the heat (leaving a message for Ian, "Mister Canada, we take your wife. We make her cold"), and the mother who tries to marry off her doctor son, joking that Wearing can't leave "not without my doctor" (a reference to the American film Not Without My Daughter).

Wearing has a gift for connecting with others and the humility to let them tell their own stories. She also sees the hilarity in the most absurd situations. As it turns out, so do the Iranians, which makes for some wonderful laughs. Wearing is also a poet, and she unveils the Iranians with innocence and grace--their hospitality, their quick acceptance and easy intimacy, and the real life of women beneath the veil. And while there are strict defenders of the revolution, most are philosophical: "Friends, please forgive us, but our country is not perfect.... it will make us very happy if you enjoy. Keep your hearts in our people, my friends. We are strangers, but we try to be kind." This is a gem of a debut. --Lesley Reed

From Publishers Weekly
To blend in on their recent visit to Iran, journalist Wearing and her gay roommate pose as a married couple, complete with wedding rings and a forged marriage certificate. Wearing also purchases a chaador (literally "tent"), made of heavy black polyester, which she wears throughout her journeyD110-degree heat notwithstanding. From that point forward, the friends can't go anywhere without receiving copious offers of gifts, dinners, invitations into people's homes, free taxi rides and fruit from Iranians who are delighted by the Westerners' attempt to understand and appreciate their customs. The characters Wearing meets are extraordinary in their ordinariness, and the author deftly shows that our opinion of the Middle East is really our opinion of Middle Eastern government. She seeks out the most intriguing of the people around her, then steps back and lets them take center stage. Tip, for instance, spent 12 years in California. Now in his early 20s, he's been stuck in Iran doing odd jobs for three dollars a day, so to save money he started a side business selling opium. Another Iranian they meet, deeply religious, explains to them why Iran is superior to the West, while other Iranians apologize profusely for the conditions of their country since the fall of the Shah 20 years ago. Wearing lets readers glimpse the anti-Americanism, oppression and miserably inefficient bureaucracy portrayed in the American news, but again and again she demonstrates the generosity of the Iranians. With this engrossing account, Wearing casts a sympathetic eye on the real people of Iran, so often invisible to the West. (Nov.)

From Library Journal
One can only applaud Canadian journalist and travel writer Wearing for her evenhanded reportage of a five-month journey through Iran. Traveling in the company of pseudo-husband (her gay male roommate), Wearing sets out to explore a country replete with contradictions and to record her experiences with compassion, humor, and objective observation. The natural hospitality of the Iranian people is a constant thread throughout the author's journey; for example, new acquaintances go in search of candy as a busload of people cheerfully delay their departure to accommodate the casual query of the Canadians for a place to buy chocolate bars. All is not wonderful in Iran, and Wearing doesn't gloss over the restrictive atmosphere that particularly affects women. Through her stay, she agrees to address as an Iranian woman despite the discomfort of being swathed in fabric from head to toe. The moments of high humor are delicious, as when Wearing's "husband" is informed by telephone, "Mr. Canada, we take your wife. We make her cold" when a kind family takes her for a drive in the countryside to cool off. This is a very special travel, both entertaining and enlightening. Highly recommended.

Breath of fresh air
By Jo Ingram
A pleasant surprise of a book. I was aware of the generous nature of the Irani people, but never have I seen it put so eloquently before. The stories told are not just fun but they seem to touch the soul to give an awareness of what's missing in the west. With so many negative stereo-types of the Irani people, it is like a breath of fresh air to finally see the true colors of what these people are all about! They have a sense of what is important in life - Family, Friends and even Strangers - PEOPLE over THINGS. This seems to be a consistent theme throughout the middle east. The people will take their last tomato from their garden, slaughter their only goat and give their company the best of what they have to offer. Their sense of joy comes from watching those around them be sated. I can't recommend this book enough! It is especially easy to read and would be a good book for a young adult as well as the sophisticated reader. Plenty of laughs as well.

A true adventure in the heart of Iran
By A Customer
This book shows why travel writing is alive: we are able to lead an adventurous life without having to subject ourselves to the rigors and stress of decyphering a foreign culture, a strange land, different habits or even having to mimic a language unknown to us.
Ms. Wearing's sensitive rendition of the people she met in Iran and her willingness to put herself in their care, allowed her to sketch an intimate portrait of the people: sensitive, humorous and captivating.
This book is not only informative, it is entertaining. Throughout its pages, Ms. Wearing lifts the veil hiding Iranian country life from us; she shows some of the habits in the mosques, conversations with religious people and attitudes of Westerners living there.
It may not be the best way to learn about Iran, but it is certainly an interesting way to expand our knowledge of the people and of the culture.

Murder in the Holy City (Sir Geoffrey Mappestone Mysteries), by Simon Beaufort

In 1097 the Pope appealed to all virtuous and God-fearing men to join the Crusade to wrest Jerusalem from the Infidel. But by 1100, Sir Geoffrey Mappestone is one of the few kings who has survived the harrowing journey, the battle to take the city, and the political infighting over the rule of the kingdom.

Upon returning to Jerusalem one day following an exhausting desert patrol, Geoffrey hears screams coming from the house of a Greek baker and discovers that one of his closest friends, a fellow knight, has been murdered in the woman's bedchamber. But this is not the first suspicious death in the city--other knights and priests have also been killed, and all, it is discovered, with the same type of curved dagger with a jeweled hilt.

Ordered to investigate the deaths by his liege lord, Prince Tancred, Geoffrey realizes too late that they are somehow part of a plot to topple the most formidable lords from their uncertain hold on power. It is not long before he finds himself drawn into dire straits involving some of the most dangerous men in the city--and learns that his closest friends could also be his deadliest enemies.

From Publishers Weekly
In this first volume of a projected series, the setting is 12th-century Jerusalem, as conflicted then as it is now. Victorious Crusaders battle heat, grit, Saracens, Greeks, Jews and one another to retain sway over the captured city. Sir Geoffrey de Mappstone, a knight allied to the Norman leader Tancred, returning to the city from a desert patrol, discovers the corpse of a recently murdered knight in a baker's bedchamber. The murder isn't unique: three monks and two knights have been similarly dispatched with carved daggers in locations throughout the city. Charged by both Tancred and the Advocate (the Catholic religious leader in Jerusalem) to solve the murders and discover their meaning, Geoffrey ferrets out treason and treachery, finding himself in constant danger. Beaufort's novel depicts the twisted alleys and markets of Jerusalem?and the equally twisted motives that brought the Crusaders there?with clarity and force. She neatly captures the particulars of everyday life, from the clothes the Crusaders wore to the food they ate. Beaufort scores with this satisfying mystery nestled securely in a well-detailed historical context.

From Library Journal
Having fallen to the Crusaders in 1099, Jerusalem still endures an uneasy religious and military alliance a year later. The several murders of two knights and three priests, apparently by the same hand, threatens an escalation of friction between the two groups. Assigned to investigate the murders by both sides, Sir Geoffrey Mappestone is caught in the middle: he must not antagonize his own liege lord, and he fears a stray word may cause further slaughter of innocents. Good plotting, abundant action, and close attention to period verisimilitude in both event and character recommend this to all collections.

From Kirkus Reviews
A new entry in the historical mystery genre, this set, in 1100, in a Jerusalem occupied by conquering Crusaders. Sir Geoffrey de Mappestone of England, a landless younger son educated in France, is a knight in the service of Lord Tancred of Italy and Tancreds uncle Bohemond. The city is being ruled by quietly warring religious factionsArchbishop Daimbert, the Patriarch, in service of the Pope; the Benedictines of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, headed by Duke Godfrey of Lorraine, who calls himself the Advocate; Augustinians, Cistercians, and others, all fighting for power. Both religious and soldier communities are frightened by a series of killings. The victims are three priests and two knights, one of whom, a friend of Geoffreys, is found dead in the house of Greek widow Melisende Mikelosand, like the others, stabbed to death with a gaudy knife that quickly disappears. Geoffrey is commissioned by Tancred and, later, by the Advocate to investigate. This he does, at numbing, bumbling length, until a final bloody battle. Readers interested in the place and period will find them portrayed here in infinitesimal detail. Puzzle fans must contend with an endlessly repetitive, confusing, and dull slog. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Enjoyable histortical mystery
By L. J. Roberts
First Sentence: Sir Guibert of Apulia's head snapped up from the ground, and he was alert instantly as he heard the city outside his tent.

Sir Geoffrey Mappstone has come to the Holy City pas part of the Crusades. Before the army even reached the Holy Land, it became less about a noble Christian undertaking, than fighting, and amassing wealth and power. Geoffrey, in the employ of the Tancred, who is allied to the Patriarch the head of the Latin Church in the Holy Land, speaks several languages and is more interested in learning than fighting.

One of Geoffrey's fellow knights is murdered with a curved dagger. Other, seemingly unrelated victims follow, the common element being the dagger. As Geoffrey investigates, his suspicion falls upon a friend.

No matter the name under which she writes, Beaufort knows how to tell a good story and teach me a bit of history. She describes the complicated politics of the time and the different groups all trying to find their place in this conflicted land.

Geoffrey is an appealing character. He is realistically written being both intelligent and a solid soldier. I did enjoy the bathhouse scene and his comment about it being four years between baths.

In fact, what marks Beaufort is the quality of the writing, the depiction of life during the time, clear depth of research and the simple fact that it is a great story. I am delighted that this is only the first of the series as it means I've a number of wonderful books awaiting me.

Beaufort's Sir Geoffrey is a winner!
By Billy J. Hobbs
Simon Beaufort's "Murder in the Holy City" is the first in yet another historical mystery series--and it's a welcomed entry. Set in the early 1100s, it features Sir Geoffrey de Mappestone, an English man educated in France, and is now a knight on a crusade to Jesusalem, a city of great contention, dominated at this time by a consortium of religious interests, all eager to make their mark and lay claim to "their" city. Religious causes work in strange circumstances, sometimes. However, religious and internecine strife aside, the city is caught up in a series of kilings---two knights and three priests. One of the knights is a friend of Geoffrey, who was found stabbed to death in the home of a Greek widow. All appear to have been killed by the same jeweled dagger! Geoffrey takes the commission to investigate and uncovers the plot to destabilize what is already an unnerving scenario and Beaufort's narrative, style, and literary skill take over.
This is an exciting "first of a series," as the author goes to great effort and detail--with some interesting glimpses of humor!--to portray the time, the place, and the characters. Beaufort's attention to detail--even if he does employ literary license liberally at times--is a good read. Sir Geoffrey is one protagonist who's got a good future! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

A Welcom Addition to the Historical Mystery Genre
By P. Bigelow
This debut is set in 1100 Jerusalem and features Sir Geoffrey Mappestone, a knight who joined the Pope's call for a crusade in 1097 because, as a younger son, he had no hope of gaining his fortune in his home country. Sir Geoffrey has, over the course of the years he's been in Jerusalem, become disillusioned with his fellow knights, his liege lord, the Crusades, and life in general.
As he returns from a reconnaissance trip into the desert, he arrives upon the scene of a murder of a fellow knight shortly after the body is discovered. The woman who stands screaming in the street has the murder weapon in her hand. Because this is the second murder of a knight using a knife, he decides he must take her to the citadel for questioning. This causes a near riot by the woman's neighbors who, along with the other citizens of Jerusalem, have no love for the Crusaders. Within a day, his life becomes complicated beyond his wildest imagination after yet another body is found murdered in the same manner, he is asked to investigate the murders by his liege lord and his lord's competitor who swears him to secrecy. As he begins his investigation with his companions, Sir Roger and Sir Hugh (who does not want to be actively involved, but agrees to voice his opinions - wanted or not), more bodies are found, he almost loses his life, nothing is as it seems, and he begins to suspect everyone.
Beaufort has written an excellent debut historical mystery. So well written is this story that you feel the heat rising from the dusty dirt streets of Jerusalem and smell the particularly odiferous stink coming from a local butcher's store. Sir Geoffrey is a well-drawn character whom the reader comes to like and admire while the supporting cast is equally well drawn. The reader is involved from page one to the end. The reader will find herself hoping that Beaufort writes fast so that the second installment of this series arrives very soon.

Louisiana Hayride Years: Making Musical History in Country's Golden Age, by Horace Logan, Bill Sloan

From 1948 to the late 1950s, Horace "Hoss" Logan produced the Louisiana Hayride, a weekly country music show broadcast on CBS Radio. The Hayride was known as the "Cradle of the Stars" for building many country music careers, and for introducing the young Elvis Presley to a national audience. Horace Logan's memoir "brings the old show back to life," as Hank Williams Jr. says--from Johnny Cash and Presley to George Jones, Johnny Horton, Faron Young, Jim Reeves, Willie Nelson, and many more. As producer, emcee, and friend to the Hayride performers, Logan gives us a personal look into musical history in the making. Complete with sixteen pages of rare onstage and behind-the-scenes photographs, Louisiana Hayride Years brings to life the early days of modern country music and the people who gave the Hayride a permanent place in popular musical culture.

Educational first-hand account of the Hayride
By hyperbolium
This volume was originally published under the title, "Elvis, Hank, and Me: Making Musical History on the Louisiana Hayride," and it's a tremendously more accurate title than the abbreviated "Louisiana Hayride Years." Although Logan was the guiding light of the show, serving as its creator and producer during its first ten years, his book focuses more on Elvis and Hank, than on the Hayride itself.
His insights into these two megastars, each at the very beginning of their climb to fame, are interesting, to be sure, but there was so much more to be covered. In addition to the two icons, numerous other country acts began or expanded their stardom on the Hayride, and though Logan provides some interesting anecdotes about Johnny and Jack, Kitty Wells, Faron Young, Slim Whitman, Webb Pierce, Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash and George Jones, he never really delves into the Hayride itself.
His dishing on the Grand Ole Opry, while probably close to the bone, is a poor substitute for a deeper discussion of how the Hayride itself worked. There's some interesting analysis of why the Hayride kept giving up its stars to Nashville, but having been written so long after-the-fact, the of-the-moment accounts focus more on the stars than the show. One never really gets a feel for the Hayride's own arc of fame, nor the nuts-and-bolts of how the show (both stage and radio) operated.
That said, and even with the factual errors noted elsewhere, this is a worthwhile first-hand account of a seminal program that fostered one of the great transitional periods in country music's history.

What a refreshing book!
By Tim Stafford (tstaff@intermediatn.net)
What a refreshing book! No pretentious axes to grind, no exposes, just one honest manÕs recollection of his remarkable experiences in the entertainment Òbidness.Ó Horace ÒHossÓ Logan was the producer of KWKH ShreveportÕs legendary Country Music radio program, ÒThe Louisiana HayrideÓ from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. During this time, the HayrideÕs popularity rivaled that of the Grand Ole Opry and it gained a deserved reputation as the ÒCradle of the Stars,Ó a place where young, upcoming talent was discovered and polished. Indeed, the names that Logan parades forth in this book are impressive, more like a ÒwhoÕs whoÓ of country musicÕs ÒGolden AgeÓ: Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Webb Pierce, Faron Young, Slim Whitman, Jim Reeves, Kitty Wells, Floyd Cramer, Sonny James, the Browns.... All got their start on the stage of ShreveportÕs Municipal Auditorium.
But ultimately Logan couldn't convince KWKH officials to entice support services to Shreveport, things like booking agencies, record companies, and publishing. As a result the best talent from the Hayride inevitably jumped to the Opry and Nashville became ÒMusic City.Ó
In all, IÕve not read a better book about Country Music. If youÕre a fan of ÒclassicÓ Country Music--which has almost become a museum piece considering the state of modern Country radio--you owe it to yourself to buy ÒLouisiana Hayride Years.Ó

Important view of country music history
By Diane Diekman
Horace Logan was an important figure in the discovery and fame-building of many country music stars. His story adds to the music's history. I downgraded the book because his facts are sometimes shaky. For instance, he says Faron Young "went through a series of relatively brief marriages and divorces." A series? Relatively brief? Faron's only marriage ended in divorce after 32 years. The statement made me wonder what else in the book I shouldn't believe. In spite of that, this is a good book, and I enjoyed reading it.

Queer Italia: Same-Sex Desire in Italian Literature and FilmFrom Palgrave Macmillan

Queer Italia gathers essays on Italian literature and film, medieval to modern. The volume's chronological organization reflects its intention to define a queer tradition in Italian culture. While fully cognizant of the theoretical risks inherent in trans-historicizing sexuality, the contributors to this volume share an interest in probing the multi-form dynamics of sexual desires in Italian texts through the centuries. The volume aims not to promote the mistaken notion of a single homosexuality through history. Rather, these essays together upset and undo the equally misguided assumption of an omnipresent heterosexuality through time by uncovering the various, complex workings of desire in texts from all periods. Somewhat paradoxically, a kind of queer canon results. These essays open a much-needed critical space in the Italian tradition wherein fixed definitions of sexual identity collapse. Queer Italia is the first and only work of its kind in Italian criticism. As such, it will be of interest to a wide audience of Italianists, medieval to modern, and queer cultural theorists.

From Library Journal
A number of books have been written about food allergies (or sensitivities), but these recipes are directed specifically at allergic children, though they could be used for adults as well. Both books offer recipes that avoid your child's particular food allergies. Meyer, the mother of allergic children, is the more health-conscious and offers unique, varied recipes. She includes suggestions for outfitting the basic pantry and kitchen when cooking for an allergic child and a section on how to tell whether your child is allergic. Harris and Nachsin, a home economist working toward certification as a nutritionist, have also raised allergic children. Because their recipes are for desserts, they contain a fair amount of oil and sugar, though fruit sweetening is also used. The authors indicate where special ingredients may be purchased and explain how to create an allergy-free home. Both books have merit, especially because little else is available on the subject, and are recommended for all health collections. (Indexes not seen.)?Lorraine F. Not worth it
By A Customer
If you are already a healthy cooker you do not need this book.
If you are not using fresh ingredients you will be offended by this book. Plus, you might find more allergies in your baby than she really have after reading it.

This book did not meet my expectations.
By A. Meeker
I wanted to like this book, but just can't. The author is condescending at best and downright insulting at worst. I think it's safe to assume that anyone buying a cookbook can um - cook! She also uses butter in every other recipe, but according to the book her kids are allergic to dairy. I don't get it. She's also a little off the deep end, she basically goes off on the entire food industry as if they are trying to kill her little darlings on purpose. Then there is a section where she goes off on a tangent about the dangers of using a grill - then she actually has the audacity to provide a recipe for grilling hotdogs and hamburgers! As if I need a cookbook for that. The other problem that I have with the book is that nearly every recipe centers around a sauce made with dijon mustard, olive oil and copious amounts of lemon juice. I'm very allergic to lemon juice, so in all honesty my ability to use this cookbook is almost non-existant.

Good resource for substitutions
By Barbara Kaser
This book has helped the most when I need a substitution or need help reading labels for all the many names which food allergens hide under. In this respect, I think the book is the best. I did find the authors writing style to be somewhat offensive to those of us who are entering the cooking scene. She has a way of making readers feel bad for not homecooking every morsel our children ingest. Also, I found that many of the main and side dish recipes were pretty standard fare. Like I stated earlier though, her substitution list and label names under which the allergens are hiding is very helpful as I read labels at the supermarket. I find alot of prepared products which are allergy free for my child by reading labels carefully and the lists and resources in this book are indispensible for that purpose.

The Confidante: Condoleezza Rice and the Creation of the Bush Legacy, by Glenn Kessler

In his riveting glimpse into the life of one of the most powerful Secretaries of State in recent years, Washington Post diplomatic correspondent Glenn Kessler provides not only a revealing look at Condoleezza Rice but a rich portrait of the Bush administration's controversial foreign policy regime. From her grievous errors in judgment as national security advisor to her notable influence over the president as Secretary of State, Rice has not gone unnoticed during her rise to power. But, as an intensely private person, she has--despite endless media attention--remained a mystery. As the first critical examination of Rice's skills as policy-maker, politician and manager, this definitive biography explains not only her rise to power, but the pivotal role she has played in our nation's history.

Full of candor as well as honesty, The Confidante shows unseen moments in Rice's life and of her frequently divisive performance during one of the most tumultuous foreign-policy periods in U.S. history. Drawing on personal interviews with Rice, an intimacy afforded to Kessler as one of the few reporters granted the opportunity to travel with her, Kessler takes readers inside the secret meetings Rice has held with foreign leaders and even her private conversations with President Bush. With access to all of Rice's top aides and sources in many overseas governments, Kessler also provides dramatic new information about one of the most secretive administrations in U.S. history.  He shows how Rice molded herself into the image of a globe-trotting diplomatic super star, negating memories of her past failures. He exposes new details about her secret role in Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, her maneuvers around government bureaucracy to strike a pivotal nuclear-energy deal with India, her persuasion of Bush to support a dramatic gesture to Iran, her failure to prevent the North Korean nuclear test, and her struggle to contain the devastating war between Israel and Lebanon. This brilliantly written book reveals not only her public and private humiliation of foreign officials but also how her charm and grace have been successful assets in repairing fractured relations overseas.

Condoleezza Rice remains today and in the future one of the most alluring, controversial, and ultimately influential decision makers in the United States. With this captivating work, Kessler shows what traits could solidify her shot at greatness or what cracks in her hard veneer could send her career hurtling to ruin.

From Publishers Weekly
At the end of President George W. Bush's first term, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was prepared to leave politics and return to an academic post at Stanford University before she was drafted by Bush to be secretary of state. Two years later, polls showed American voters regarded her as the most powerful woman in the country. In this gripping and intelligent account, Washington Post correspondent Kessler chronicles those two years, drawing on his firsthand experiences traveling with Rice as well as an impressive array of documents and interviews. Kessler organizes the book by region, vividly dramatizing Rice's travels and negotiations overseas—the chapter including her visits to Khartoum and Darfur is a standout—while providing thoughtful analysis and historical background to put these vignettes in context. Kessler praises Rice for a number of successes, including her role in weakening a secret CIA prison system in Europe, but he also criticizes her failure to provide a coherent foreign policy vision and her weakness at implementation and follow-up. This balanced, detailed text offers invaluable insight into Rice's rise to power, though its exclusive focus on foreign policy may limit its appeal. (Sept.)

From Booklist
With her long relationship with the Bush family (having served in the previous Bush administration) and ideological sympathy with the current President Bush, Rice has gained a position as trusted confidante. Washington Post diplomatic correspondent Kessler, who has traveled extensively with Secretary of State Rice, explores her career, personality, and relationship with Bush and other members of his administration. Drawing on interviews with Rice, he presents a portrait of a steely and forceful woman, capable of great charm, with the savvy to stand up to powerful political figures at home and abroad. Although Kessler examines her background for clues to her outlook on race, the book is predominantly focused on Rice's triumphs and foibles in foreign relations. He examines the policies she supported as national security advisor that later came back to haunt her as secretary of state. He offers details of Rice's involvement in tense negotiations with North Korea and Iran regarding nuclear weapons, efforts to encourage greater democracy—particularly for women—in the Middle East, and negotiations of a truce between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. She had agreed to take the position on the condition that the Bush administration would work toward creating a Palestinian state, a process that she undermined while she served as national security advisor and one that would continue to elude her. Finally, he explores her management style, lack of a coherent foreign policy vision, and desperate efforts to save Bush's foreign policy legacy and her own. Bush, Vanessa

Review
"A tour de force. I have followed Rice for years, yet reading this book I feel like I only now understand her."--Thomas E. Ricks, author of Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq "Kessler, in this timely and important book, identifies the principal weakness of Rice's stewardship as the absence of any 'coherent foreign policy vision,' especially regarding the Middle East.  The calamitous consequences for America of this shortcoming are likely to be felt for years to come."--Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security advisor, 1977-1981

"Glenn Kessler is a tough, independent beat reporter of the old school. His chronicle of Condoleezza Rice's turn as Secretary of State is meticulous and fair, but it provides a devastating account of how Rice's diplomacy often rested on wish and illusion, and was finally overwhelmed by the Bush Administration's failed foreign policies."--Steve Coll, author of Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001

"Glenn Kessler has amassed a wealth of new material about Condoleezza Rice and the people around her. If you want to get beyond the image-makers and find out what Condoleezza Rice has actually been doing as secretary of state, this is the right book for you."--James Mann, Johns Hopkins University and author of Rise of the Vulcans: The History of the Bush War Cabinet

"As foreign policy tutor, security adviser, and now as secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice has stood at the center of George Bush's foreign policy from day one. Glenn Kessler provides a fair and balanced assessment of how Rice's actions and inactions in these first incarnations made her job of guiding foreign policy now so much more difficult. A masterful treatment that is bound to stand the test of time."--Ivo Daalder, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and co-author of America Unbound: The Bush Revolution in Foreign Policy

A Seat at the Diplomatic Table
By Steven Hirsch
Kessler's thesis is two-fold: (1) Rice has spent her years as Secretary of State saddled with the impossible task of trying to undo the damage that she did in Bush's first term as a National Security Advisor who fell under the sway of the administration's neoconservative ideologues. (2) Despite keeping up the most frenetic travel schedule of any Secretary of State since Kissinger, Rice's performance has been a series of missed opportunities attributable to a lack of any coherent strategic vision. As a reporter "on the plane" with Rice, Kessler is able to give you a detailed and psychologically nuanced look at Rice and the other players, foreign and domestic. It is a finely observed rendition of a disaster in the making, made all the more poignant by the fact that Rice herself is portrayed as a brilliant, talented, strong, energetic, attractive, and even charismatic person who might have played a constructive role in the world had she attached herself to a more competent mentor. As a reporter, Kessler stops short of articulating what he thinks an appropriate foreign-policy agenda might have looked like and tends to judge Rice's performance in relation to the goals that the she and the Administration set for themselves. But the book's agnosticism is part of its attraction, as it gets you thinking about your own foreign-policy values and commitments. What would a good response to the Hezbollah-Israeli war have looked like? What role should democracy and human rights play in foreign policy--and does an excessive focus on those values make a country end up looking hypocritical as idealism comes into contact with reality and inevitably becomes compromised? When is refusing to negotiate directly with a dangerous outlaw state like North Korea a useful tool, and when does it become an impediment to achieving important goals, like nuclear nonproliferation? Kessler's book doesn't answer these questions, but raises them in such an intriguing way as to ensure that it will still be attracting readers long after Rice has left the public stage--whenever that may be.

The Diplomatic Fashion Runway
By Jas. Murphy
No one denies that Condi Rice is a talented and hard-working diplomat, but Kessler's excellent book chronicles a series of missed diplomatic opportunities during her tenure, inviting one to consider how effective Rice has been as Secretary of State during Bush's second term. Rice initially built a strong and brilliant team under deputy secretary Robert Zoellick, and some of the success stories Kessler describes took place while Zoellick was at the helm.

Rice had a public profile and was popular with the public during her time on the NSC, but once she ascended to role of Secretary of State, she sought systematically to raise her public profile, and to do so largely through a series of media splashes accompanied by high fashion statements. Rice focused heavily on image. Perhaps the most salient example of a woman in power who used fashion to great effect is Margaret Thatcher, who was a relentless implementer; Kessler demonstrates that once Rice launched initiatives, her execution and implementation were weak, and apparently style trumped substance. Rice does dress the part, carries it off well, and clearly enjoys being a leading fashionista. Dean Acheson also dressed extremely well, but this was probably secondary to his diplomatic skill, and in any case his sartorial statements were not on prominent media display during his trips abroad, although I imagine had he appeared for dinner in Saudi Arabia, as Rice did, wearing flowing white silk with gold pinstripes threaded through the fabric, that would have changed quickly. But if the most innovative fashion statement conservatives can muster is the adoption the solid-color necktie look pioneered by James Baker, then we should welcome Rice's attempts to raise the bar.

While Rice is known to be extremely bright, she appears to compensate for a lack of strategic intellectual firepower with a highly developed sense of performance. Splendid performances can go a long way in diplomacy, it seems, but Rice's tenure has been marked by unlucky breaks and wrong-footed initiatives which Kessler does an outstanding job of covering, while simultaneously guiding us through some of the major foreign policy challenges of the last few years with skill and brevity. The book's title, however, suggests that a more detailed examination of the Rice-Bush relationship would be on offer, with insight into how she became so influential with Bush. Here the book falls short, but is nonetheless an essential read for anyone seeking to understand Rice's leadership, or lack of it, during a few turbulent years. Interestingly, as she was provost of a highly complex university and managed a stable of world-class talent, she seems to have brought no managerial skill at all to the running of the Department of State, neglecting to tap the vast resources available there and demonstrating her tacit acceptance of the Bush style of a closed inner circle that doesn't look beyond its own resources or mental models.

Rice brings to the table an outstanding set of personal and intellectual qualities, but if Kessler's book is accurate, she may not have the chops to take on a future leadership role in electoral politics. One can only wish her well in the remaining months of her term, but Kessler provides little comfort that major breakthroughs are to be expected, particularly in the mid-east, where Rice has declared her intent to bring peace and stability, and realize the President's stated goal of fostering a Palestinian state. Even now, her role in managing other issues, such as those presented by Iran, seems less than significant.

Five Stars
By Bill Ivester
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'd say it's essential reading for anyone who follows current events on any level. The writing is both direct and engaging and the author provides background and context in each chapter without overcomplicating. I really felt like a Washington insider with access to fascinating accounts of behind-the-scenes negotiations. Kessler's treatment of Rice is even-handed; he highlights her dedication, drive, poise and intelligence but also holds her accountable for failed outcomes and missteps. Reading the New York Times is a whole new experience now - I have a much deeper understanding of the issues and people in the news. Highly recommended!

From Library Journal
This long-overdue revision of a classic in popular music reference ( LJ 12/15/74) contains nearly 500 entries. Focusing on mainstream pop and rock musicians and groups, with a much less representative sampling of soul, new wave, and punk, the lengthy entries feature significant background, recording, and critical information. The revision complements rather than replaces the first edition, which should not be withdrawn from circulation; definitions of musical terms and rock vernacular have been dropped as, unfortunately, have been numerous listings for groups and individual recording artists. More intensive though less inclusive than The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll ( LJ 12/1/83), this book belongs on the reference shelf of every library, and those with more liberal budgets should also consider adding a circulating copy.

THE encyclopedia any music enthusiast should own.
By A Customer
Irwin Stambler's "Encyclopedia of Pop, Rock, and Soul," is a must-have for anyone that is truly interested in the history of modern music. As a musician myself, I appreciate the in-depth articles on the lives and times of musicians and groups. Whereas most other music encyclopedias simply list dates and a few relevant facts, Stambler's encyclopedia provides biographies for every artist, often with personal interviews, from Zeppelin to Tina Turner to Elvis. A great place to learn about the artists that you listen to every day. I have contacted the author, and he has informed me that already out is his popular "Encyclopedia of Country Music," and that within the next year we should expect the release of the already finished "Encyclopedia of Folk and Blues."

The consumate guide to 40 yrs of rock written by a master.
By A Customer
If you've ever hummed along to Elvis or tapped a toe to the Beatles, you should read this book. Although I always considered myself merely a knoweledgeable amateur of rock and roll, someone who likes to listen to all the greats without really knowing the meaning behind the songs, Irwin Stambler's book opened for me the rich world of 40 years of rock and roll. His encyclopedic knowledge of the singers, groups, music and recording industry and his access to all the biggest stars, give his book a depth and erudition unmatched by other authors. Written for the professional as well as just the person who likes to flip on the radio as he drives to work, this book is a rich source of valuable information about all your favorite singers.

No experience necessary......
By J & K Hyrkas
I am not Indian (unlike many of the other reviewers it seems) and had very little experience with Indian food (and had never cooked it myself) before I got this book from the local library.
So far, every recipe I've tried has come out phenomenally, but of course some of them weren't quite as easy as the recipe made it sound. But they still came out great. I am now in the market for this book because I consider it a MUST HAVE for any home cook.
I also love the fact that in the whole book, there are only 5 recipes that include meat (that's not counting the fish/shellfish recipes since my partner and I still eat those). It's very hard to find a good ethnic cookbook of any kind that is at least mostly vegetarian.

Warm memories
By A Customer
As another south indian settled in USA the book brought back very vivid and warm memories of southern india and mumbai. While the recipes are as standard and perhaps lacking in detail in some ways, the stories and memories associated with them are very real and common across many south indian households. The introduction with the grandmother's story brought tears to my eyes - and i also loved the flowing and somewhat natural way of relating food to people (the sindhi lady, sardari vendor) and the strong familial ties to his sister and family that are expressed through food.
That said - indian lifestyle, however, is fraught with tradition and rigid, lot of times oppressive beliefs that are not obvious and very hard to come to terms with, especially if you are a woman. I dont' believe it is within the scope of this book to address those issues but i do believe in some places the author tends to paint life as pinker than it is (arranged marriage, life with in laws, caste/community related issues).

middle church
By A. Chong
This was Raghavan's second book, his first being the Betty Crocker Guide
to Indian Cooking (low church), and his third being the 5-star 660 Curries book.

In this one, he really presents more of a collection of stories
(seen through some very soft focus rose colored lenses) of his youth.
The recipes are good, but definitely concentrate on Indian street food and
family cooking. They're definitely a step above the BC guide, but
this is NOT a comprehensive survey of Indian cooking, but merely
a glimpse. The book is a lot less educational and more entertaining
than 660.

Keep in mind that he's vegetarian, and most (but not all) of the recipes
are oriented that way.

I have no idea why there are 11 copies, starting at $57. I managed to
luck out and find a hardcover for under $10.
