DeBorde, a writer for the Food Network's Good Eats, has taken the slick and amusing characteristics of that Alton Brown show and applied them toward the proper understanding of seafood. Marginalia runs rampant, telling readers, for example, that swordfish enjoy glow-in-the-dark bait and that some clams live for more than a century. Fortunately, the author knows his way around a pun and is expert and comprehensive in his fishy explorations. Vital stats and nutritional information charts dot most chapters, and 18 sea creatures get their own sections. In each, recipes are preceded by several pages of historical or ichthyological ponderings. For east coasters, the chapter on Dungeness crabs will prove revelatory. Naturally, there is a traditional Fish and Chips recipe, made with cod, and there's a fine page on turning tuna into sushi. Illustrations are appropriately funny and instructive. A red snapper holds up a sign reading, "Yes, I am a red snapper, why do you ask?" and then a few pages later is gutted and carved, step by step. If it's true you can tune a piano but you cannot tuna fish, DeBorde at least takes on his material in just the right pitch. (Apr.)

One of the best fish related books out there

If you've never heard of Rob DeBorde or his amusing internet cooking show alter-ego Tako the Octopus, you should be ashamed. DeBorde also writes for Food Network's Good Eats and if you are a fan of the informative and creative way that cooking is presented in Good Eats, you will no doubt be impressed by this book.

The book is split into multiple chapters each dealing with a certain kind of fish. Unlike other cookbooks that just throw recipes at you, this book will actually educate you about how the fish live, how they die, how they get to your table and what they give to you nutritionally speaking. If you're a fan about learning about the animal you're cooking you will love this book.

However, for those who JUST want recipes and in-depth directions and pictures teaching you exactly how to cook this book, you should look elsewhere. This book is definitely for those who want to do more than just cook their food and actually understand their food. Not to say this book doesn't have recipes in it, but in my case, I read this book as much for the recipes as I do for fun.

If you own author and Food Network celebrity Alton Brown's cookbooks, then you would be remiss to not include this on the very same bookshelf.

In this clear and original book, Creveld (Moshe Dayan, etc.) argues effectively for Israel's withdrawal from the occupied territories—unilaterally, if necessary—on the grounds that it will make Israel more secure. A history professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he details the change in Israel's military thinking after its 1967 victory in the Six-Day War and claims it's time to change once again. Creveld proposes a "military revolution": more mobile forces and a more decentralized command system that will be more capable of countering terrorist threats. This should be accompanied by a withdrawal from the Palestinian territories, he contends, which are sapping Israel's military and moral superiority at levels that far outweigh their economic and ideological value. While he admits that an Israeli withdrawal will not completely rid the country of terrorism, he asserts that it will likely take away some of the motivation for suicide bombers. He also argues forcefully that the conventional threat to Israel from Arab states has passed and that the nuclear threat, post–Saddam Hussein, may be exaggerated. At a time when the debate is bogged down and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is stuck in a back-and-forth with his party over withdrawing from Gaza, Creveld's innovative ideas deserve a wide readership. About the Author
Martin van Creveld was born in the Netherlands in 1946 and has lived in Israel from 1950. Having studied in Jerusalem and London, since 1971 he has been on the faculty of the History Department, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. A specialist in military history and strategy, he is the author of 17 books, and has appeared regularly on CBS, CNN and the BBC.

Can good fences make viable neighbors?

Guerillas, so long as they do not lose, win. This observation by Henry Kissinger--quoted by van Creveld in the same chapter where he recommends the wall--forms the backbone of the book: How does a small country with no strategic depth succeed where Kissinger and the United States failed? For the United States, loss in Vietnam was traumatic but not fatal. For Israel, with its tiny population, religious and cultural distinctiveness from its Arab antagonists, and only the width of the Jordan rather than breadth of the Pacific Ocean to withdraw behind, any loss could represent a mortal threat. It is not a risk that Israel is willing to take.

Van Creveld proposes a solution brilliant in its simplicity and creativity. If Israel cannot win an "evolved form of insurgency," as Marine Colonel T. X. Hammes described what is often known as "fourth generation warfare," (or as van Creveld calls it, "non-trinitarian war") the solution is to convert the struggle back to something Israel can win. This approach may be contrasted with Israel's current strategy, which is to use conventional forces to try to win an unconventional war. Van Creveld is proposing to first convert the struggle to a conventional one, then win--or what is much more likely, deter--it.

Building on the framework he established in The Transformation of War, van Creveld goes to some lengths to explain why Israel is unlikely to prevail in its struggle with the Palestinians by using its military forces to suppress the Intifada. Although the arguments are complex, they all come back to an observation by Joe Galloway (the reporter who was with Hal Moore at Ia Drang) that when conventional troops kill a guerilla, they create two more to take his or her place. If you throw in the higher birth rate of the inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza, you see that Israel is fast running up against the dismal laws of arithmetic.

If one rules out rounding up all remaining Arabs and marching them across the Jordan or into the Sinai--such ethnic cleansing possibly achievable in 1967 but mere right-wing fantasy today--the solution is two fold. First separate the warring parties. This means withdrawing virtually all the settlements from the West Bank and absolutely all of them from Gaza and building a wall "so high a bird can't fly over it." This produces two well-defined geographical entities with fairly short borders (much shorter than current Israeli plans for the security fence.) It would also remove the 120 or so settlements, which now require more force to protect than Israel used to defeat Egypt in the 1967 war. Then exploit Israel's universally recognized superiorities in maneuver warfare and advanced technology to deter or speedily interdict and defeat any attack, which would now have to be conventional, from any Arab state including the new Palestinian one. At some point in the future, when both parties desire it, the wall can be torn down. In the meantime, van Creveld predicts that a secure Israel will be able to redeploy its human and economic resources to resume the economic growth that was interrupted by the Palestinian uprisings.

There are at least two arguments against this approach, and van Creveld considers them both. Some have argued that it would amount to a reverse "ethnic cleansing" of Jews from the West Bank. This is a difficult argument for a non-Israeli to comprehend, since all the Jews on the West Bank moved there after the 1967 war to occupy land owned by Arabs. Many have already left. The other involves water. Van Creveld is, in my opinion, unduly optimistic on this point. Water from the West Bank's "Mountain Aquifer" and from the Jordan River (to which a Palestinian state would also have a claim) provides about a third of Israel's consumption. Foregoing this would significantly hamper agriculture (which currently uses more than half of all Israeli water resources) and, as he notes, would require building expensive and strategically vulnerable desalinization plants. It can be done, and it may have to be done, but it will require a major cultural shift from the notoriously profligate use of water by the Israelis.

For all who have been wondering what an end state in the Middle East might look like, that is, one that did not leave the place a radioactive desert even hotter than the one there now, van Creveld offers a message of hope. It will certainly not satisfy the fanatics on either side, but that is probably a good test of its justice if not its feasibility.

A Military analysis

Israel has fought 5 major wars, each one to secure its borders. 1948 was to create a country. 1956 was to stop the infiltration and prempt Egypt's growing army. 1967 was fought out of desperation, but led to the creation of a `Greater Israel'. 1973 was a defensive conflict, that almost proved a disaster. 1982 was fought to stop the shelling of the Galilee by a proto-Palestinian state in Lebanon. The recent pseudo-conflicts of the First(1989-1992) and primarily the second Intifada(2000-present) have created new border issues, resulting in the construction of the security fence.

Creveld fresh from his studies of the IDF and Dayan now uses his analysis in this fresh and insightful book to explain the question of defensible borders and how they relate to Israel today. In 1948 any military tactician could see the borders `given' to Israel by the U.N and rejected by the Arab leadership, were indefensible. The Arab state controlled the high ground, Israel the coastal plain. Israel was roughly 9 miles wide, meaning the country could be cut in half in a days fighting. But today, as Creveld points out, Israel has the best military in the Middle East, and perhaps the best in the world. Israel's inventiveness have led to her developing of the Merkava tank and other weapons that could easily clean up the armies of her neighbors. Beyond Israel's army are the peace treaties that at least on paper guarantee Israeli security against a renewal of the 1967 situation, the situation that caused the conquest of the West Bank and Gaza. Today the threat is terror. And terror, unlike the Germans, can actually be stopped by maginot line style defenses, listening posts, and other technology based infrastructure. This book argues passionately, and intelligently that Israel's military solution should be a withdrawal to a line somewhere near the green line, that can be easily defended and yet leaves the majority of palistinians outside Israel, to fend for their own destiny. This book does not ask hard questions, such as what to do with the 250,000 Israelis living in villages on the West Bank, but it does give a military solution. An excellent, well thought out, non-emotional approach, this will be enjoyable reading for any student of the middle east conflict and anyone wanting to understand one path to peace.

In addition, Van Creveld offers thought provoking ideas about the nature of Israel's security from the burgeoning private security industry to ideas as to whether strategic weapons (e.g. "nukes" - assuming that Israel has them) should be placed on mobile platforms like ships.

No doubt this has a strong impact on Israeli politics, for it is what Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has been doing before he succumbed to a stroke some time ago. Whether his successor, Olmert, can carry on with this strategy remains to be seen. Nevertheless it is a most amazing book that has left a big, lasting impact on Israeli and Middle East politics overall.

Good for Gifting

I purchased 20 of these book as party favors for a Mother's Day "Trolley Tour" and lucheon in historic Fernandina Beach, FL in 2012. The theme colors were yellow and white, so the cover is what initialled "drew" me to the book.

The pleasant surprise was that the contents and devotionals were so appropriate for the event and all my guests simply loved it. I still have it on my nightstand today.

Flowery language abounds in this slim collection of diary-like musings by Strong, former director of Britain's Victoria & Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery. Now a critic, historian and garden designer to such clients as Prince Charles, Elton John and the late Gianni Versace, Strong cuts a broad swath on the English arts scene. Thankfully, his upper crustiness is softened by eccentric charm, making these dispatches from his country estate, the Laskett, an entertaining choice for armchair gardeners and society wannabes. Published in Britain's Country Life magazine from 1989 to 1994, the entries are seasonally arranged, chronicling the ins and outs of daily life in Herefordshire. "At the Laskett," Strong writes, "I know that spring is really here when the pleached lime avenue we call Elizabeth Tudor is thickly carpeted with daffodils... and also when the fountain, emptied for the duration of winter, spurts and sparkles once again in the light outside the breakfast room window." Autumn's first frost "[causes] us to retreat from conservatory to dining room to eat." Winter heralds the passing of Strong's beloved cat Reverend Wenceslas Muff, who is succeeded by William Larkin Esq. and Herzog Friedrich von Sans Souci, kittens whom Strong trains to walk on a leash. An opening article reprinted from Hortus describes the house and garden ("the largest formal garden in England to be planted from scratch since 1945") in detail. B&w sketches by Strong's wife, Oman, a designer for film, television and theater, add to the volume's unique appeal.

vignettes of an English garden

I grew to love this book more as I read each entry. Sir Roy Strong writes of all sorts of everyday things and each is interesting. I found I wanted to write down some of them to share with friends. If you are a gardener at heart, you would especially enjoy this book. The most gardening I do is watering potted plants, but I still greatly enjoyed it. Hear about 'Posthumous Hoby' whose mother gave him his name because he was born after his father's death. For cat lover's there are tales of their cat. I got my copy from the library, but am going to buy one to read again, and buy one for our son, who loves gardening.

A gentle country life

First published in Britain in 1994 A Country Life is a collection of the authors personal memories and experiences a number of which appeared as regular column pieces in Country Life magazine between 1989 and 1994.
Following the seasons it is a glorious portrait of the rural way of life of Roy Strong former Director of the V&A and his wife Julia Trevelyan Oman who provides the delightful pen and ink illustrations.
The scene is set by an essay Strong wrote for Hortus in 1992 in which he describes their house The Laskett in Herefordshire.

Makes You Feel as If You Are Standing at Their Gate

I could not wait to read this book. I received a blurb from a fb friend and a Pinterest postit. The day the postman delivered it I quickly opened the packaging and began to read author Strong's recollections. The illustrations appear to be charcoal or black white watercolor but they fit the mood of each entry beautifully. Wonderful book. I am forcing myself to read it slowly in order to enjoy the flavor of the work. Definitely a wonderful purchase. Would make a delightful gift for that reader in the family.

This is fast becoming one of my all-time favorite coloring books. I just love the style of all the intricate creatures and settings. The penguin was so much fun to scope out and choose colors for. Of course I didn't go with the traditional white and black. I decided to go with pinks, blues, purples etc. My penguin really looks like a garden full of colors. I also had a ton of fun doing the tortoise. I think my coloring ended up stunning. I completed the fish pond one a while ago while enjoying a Starbucks on a sunny balcony at Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland, OR. What a great memory. It was so hot! But I loved coloring right out in the open with so much activity and people watching. Coloring doesn't have to be just an introvert hobby. A New Favorite!

Wonders of Creation has quickly become one of our family’s favorite adult coloring books. My three daughters (one teen and two elementary age) and I are all enjoying coloring in this book. Even though it has many fine lines and small spaces to color in, there still seems to be plenty for the younger girls to enjoy.

The pictures are simply wonderful. They are very detailed and you will want to make sure that your map pencils are very sharp. I also like the thickness of the paper. It feels very sturdy. There are many different types of scenes to color, from animal portraits and full-length animals, to larger groupings of animals and plants. Some have bold, dark lines with lots of detail, while other pictures have dainty and specific artwork. It’s a great combination.

I look forward to continuing to work on pages with my girls and enjoying the bonding time that it gives us. I highly recommend this coloring book.

Wonders of Creation is a beautifully illustrated coloring book

Wonders of Creation is a beautifully illustrated coloring book. I appreciate the thickness of the pages which allows for the use of different mediums. I like the way the artists causes us to see God as the ultimate Creator as He has given us much art to admire in His creation. The coloring pages are filled with scenery and animals to color. If you are a coloring enthusiast, there will be much for you to color. There isn't any text in this coloring unlike my other faith based coloring books. Overall, I think this book is well designed and crafted.

Otherwise quite entertaining, this relentlessly upbeat "authorized" biography is marred by redundant quotes from the bandmembers and associates, factual inconsistencies, and the lack of a discography. Entertaining for a Chieftain Fan

This is a wonderful history book of the Chieftains. The book is very informative about their love of Irish heritage, the traditional music, and all the wonderful groups, singers, musicians that they have shared the stage and recordings. Paddy has a great sense of humor, and he is the glue that holds the group together and make them what they are. I own a lot of the Chieftains recordings, videos, and I look for more products that they have made. We were sadden for the loss of their great harpist, piantist, Derek Bell. We all miss him.RIP

Great access but absurdly disorganized

Mr. Glatt appears to have enjoyed carte blanche access to these fabulous musicians but his book reads like he spilled his notes and put them in the book in random. One moment he's praising founder Paddy Moloney for his computer-like brain, the next we're supposed to laugh that Paddy is five hours late for a major recording session.
There's some fun stuff here, but the weeds are thick!

A trip with genius

The Chieftains are an enigma in more ways than one. Unlike so many other musicians they have stood the test of time. In this book we learn about how they came into being, and at the same time we are alos exposed to a wealth of knowledge about traditional Irish nmusic. Before I read this book I liked the sound, but I didn't know too much about where it had come from. Now, through the insights of John Glatt, I have come to appreciate it at a much higher level. It makes for fascinating and informative reading, even if you come to it with little or no knowledge of the group. It is accompanied by a comprehensive discography (at time of publishing), which is an ideal source of reference. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

The founder of Miller Business Systems, an office supply company, presents his principles of customer focus that have enhanced his company's success. Through analogies, Miller relates his leadership concepts to sports teams, which will surely appeal to executives with annual box seats! All the current good ideas on serving customers, such as hiring customer-oriented employees, focusing internal processes on serving customers, constant systems redesign based on customer feedback, and long-term relationships with customers can be found in this program, read by the author. Although Miller's ideas are soundly rooted in the extensive literature in this genre, he offers little new information. Also, with the significant problems inherent in today's professional sports business, his attempt to relate complex team-based organizational success to successful athletic teams is outdated. Invest instead in the more substantial work from Ron Zemke (Working with Jerks, S. & S. Audio, 1989).

A "how-to" on building a customer oriented team.

This book focuses on serving customers as the customer wants to be served not as the service provider wants to serve. The "Coach's Checklists" at the end of each chapter are each worth the price of the book. This book drives home the point that the ONLY difference between a business and sports team is the field they play on.

Great Ideas for Inspiring Teamwork

"The Corporate Coach" is truly a gift to anyone who has to "coach" or lead a team.

Even though I am not a big fan of the sports team analogy, author and CEO of Miller Busines Systems, Jim Miller shares his insights, stories and practical advice on how to inspire teamswork. Jim has built a hugely successful company through teamwork, emphasizing customer service, empowerment and good ol' common sense.

In a "down-to-earth" style, Jim shares oodles and oodles of great, easy-to-implement ideas to create and sustain extraordinary teams. I kept marking page after page with post-it flags to tab one great idea after another. At the end of each chapter, Jim summarizes his key points with a "coach's checklist." For example, at the end of the "Create Small Wins" chapter:

* Encourage employees to believe in themseves. Do everything in your power to publicize their successes.

* Let everyone recognize good work. Every single employee at your company should be able to praise - in some kind of formal way - in somekind of formal way - all of the other people he or she works with.

* Have the boss give the award, whenever possible. Praise from a peer is good; recognition from top management is better.

* Praise them at home, too. Make employees heroes at home by sending letters, flowers, tickets to a ball game, or other presents to the house.

Management is not a place for a dictator.

The Corporate Coach is a good book for all would-be and new managers. The book reinforces the idea that a manager is not so much a boss as a supporter of his employees. Every company should hope that each manager understands he has employees entrusted to him and he must be able to maximize their effectiveness. To do this, the manager must be able to be a supporter, a cheerleader and a corrector of problems in an atmosphere that is positive. The Corporate Coach explains all of this from the know-how of someone who has done it and proven it's success. I give it to all my new managers to read.

Freelance journalist Rubin presents the queen also as loving wife and mother, promoter of the arts and sponsor of Columbus, views emphasized to soften the dominant persona: Isabella la Catolica. Her goal to make Spain exclusively and permanently Catholic drove the queen to supporting the tortures of the Inquisition, burning dissenters at the stake and evicting Jews from the country. Packed with information, the book holds the reader's interest, despite pedestrian prose and a clear bias in Isabella's favor. Illustrations not seen by PW.

The flow of books connected with the quincentenary of Columbus's voyage to the Americas continues. General readers interested in the remarkable woman who pressed the unification of the several kingdoms constituting medieval Spain; pacified a rebellious nobility; made Catholicism a national unifying force by using the Inquisition against Muslims and Jews; supported the new learning of the Renaissance; produced five children around whom the history of 16th-century Europe revolved; and, almost by accident, financed the Genoese sailor who "discovered" America believing it was India will find this an enjoyable study. Rubin, however, has a very sketchy knowledge of late medieval-early modern European history, nor is she familiar with the rich recent literature on Muslim Spain, the reconquista , and the direction of current scholarship. The book also suffers from clumsy organization, with 62 short chapters, too many romantic conjectures, contradictions, and a prolix style. The serious student and scholar must look to scholarly monographs. Previewed in "Rediscovering Columbus," LJ 8/91, p. 120-122.

In this scholarly, limpidly written work, Rubin (The Mother Mirror, 1984; The New Suburban Woman, 1982) recounts the story of Spain's greatest queen and the impact of her reign on her country and the world. The marriage of Isabella of Castile and Prince Ferdinand of Aragon (1469), more than any other event, caused the creation of the Spanish state by merging Spain's two main Christian kingdoms. Rubin demonstrates that Isabella's unique personality left a pervasive mark on the nascent Spanish society. Isabella's devout Catholicism led her to embrace religious fanatics like her confessor Cisneros, and resulted in the completion of the reconquista (the conquest of Moorish Spain), the expulsion of the Jews and Moors from Spain, and the institution of the uniquely repressive and cruel Spanish Inquisition (Rubin speculates, without much evidence, that Isabella suffered from a troubled conscience about these excesses). The author also shows how Isabella's faith motivated her to support Columbus's voyages of discovery (she saw his explorations principally as an opportunity to win new souls to Christ, and Rubin relies on primary sources to illustrate Isabella's misgivings at Columbus's frank exploitation of the natives). Rubin also explains the relationship between Isabella's personal tragedies and European politics--the marriage of her daughters Catherine and Juana had important historic consequences but both ended in tragedy. While the author demonstrates the critical importance of Isabella's reign for the Spain that emerged from it, she does not succeed in making a case for Isabella as a ``Renaissance queen'': Isabella united and strengthened Spain but left it intellectually hobbled and dominated by the Church, and less culturally diverse and tolerant than before. A Little Glossed Over

This enjoyable book gives a fairly comprehensive look at Isabella of Castile. It does a good job of presenting the relationship between Ferdinand and Isabella - a rather unique one for that period of time since Isabella had more power. The author obviously admires Isabella, not a bad thing since she had many admirable qualities, but this causes her to gloss over a few of the not so admirable things Isabella did. The Spanish Inquisition barely gets mentioned, and her treatment of the Jews is presented in a more sympathetic light than perhaps it deserves. Those short comings aside, I found this book to be highly informative and definitely worth reading.

Prescott revisited

Any potentional historian of Spain must contend with the work of William Prescott. Though cutting edge historians of Spain dismiss Prescott as old fashioned (he wrote over 150 years ago), his work can still be read with pleasure and little awe (particulalry when one remembers that Prescott was blind when he was active as a historian.
Nancy Rubin makes use of Prescott and in a sense pours old wine in new bottles. Her Isabella is more acceasable than Prescott's pius queen. She also very ably puts Isabella in the proper perspective as the co-founder of modern Spain (at least from a geographic perspective). Isabella's reputation rests on her funding of the voyages of Columbus, but as Ms. Rubin's book ably demonstrates, she was much more than that. In a time when political couples (like FDR and Eleanor) are described as "political partners" Isabella and Ferdinand were true co-equals. He fought the wars and she tended to the quartermaster functions. No wonder they were a magnificent success.
If this book has one problem it is the rather ambiguous relationship between Isabella and the Jews and Moslems of Spain. Though she made use of the former throughout her career (particularly early on), she later was a willing participant in their forcible conversion. Perhaps this subject requires a book of its own.

Surpisingly Easy to Read!

Nancy Rubin's work on Isabel la Católica was very refreshing and difficult to put down. As a Spanish Literature student at UCLA, I recommend this book to anyone interested in the brightening their knowledge of this great woman. The chronology was consistant and the surrounding facts of the Catholic Queen were just the right size. It emphasized the rennovations that the queen implemented on the broken kingdom and the tenacity of her character, all fueled by her faith.
