From Library Journal
These two contemporary collections from The New Yorker 's Frothingham and Evans ( And I Quote , St. Martin's, 1992) will prove useful for any collection. Crisp Toasts lists at least three toasts for more than 100 alphabetically arranged topics, from absent friends to work. Ranging from timely to traditional, most of the toasts are short one-liners, ideal for weddings, christenings, reunions, and retirement dinners. Well-Done Roasts is one of the first collections of roasts for every occasion. Roasts are becoming an ever more popular form of testimonial for everyone from politicians to retired sports heroes, and the authors offer hundreds of friendly tributes disguised as insults, arranged alphabetically from old age to youth. There is even a helpful list of synonyms. This user-friendly, nonsexist manual will keep audiences in stitches. Some contemporary samples: "Those aren't acne scars on his face, he just had a hard time learning to eat with a fork," and "She went to the Tammy Faye Baker cosmetics school."-- Brian E. Coutts, Western Kentucky Univ. Libs., Bowling Green

"A Heartfelt Toast For The Ones We Love"
By Janis Rosen
A truly remarkable book! Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Original, creative, heartfelt and sincere toasts. "Crisp Toasts" is the answer for "those of us" who don't know exactly what to say and when to say it. It gives you direct guidance on helping you find the "perfect" toast for the "perfect" couple. Sincere and meaningful examples are given, some serious and others funny, and insight as to which one is appropriate depending on the situation. I have recommended it to many friends and relatives. What a wonderful reference book to keep throughout the years.

On the other hand..
By J. L. Kyle
I could not have been more disappointed with this book! The suggestions for quotes to use in toasts for various occasions were uninteresting and unoriginal. You could find many more memorable words and phrases to borrow in a host of other books. Do the authors really think that "may we be loved by those we love" would add wit or class to a toast at a family occasion? Pass this book by and find another to help you in expressing yourself glass in hand.

There is another Los Angeles that exists beyond the Tar Pits, the Hollywood Sign and the bus tours of "stars" homes. It's the real Los Angeles and it offers more unique, interesting and one-of-a-kind experiences, whether you're a lifetime resident or just visiting for the weekend, than any stop on a tour bus.

Resident Tourist uncovers diverse locations throughout Los Angeles that are lighter on the pocketbook and less in the spotlight than the typical haunts filled with camera toting out-of-towners, with a focus on giving you your own truly memorable only-in-L.A experience.

An interesting and inventive look at LaLa Land
By A Customer
I've lived in the Los Angeles area for nearly twenty years and don't know how I've kept my head held high at cocktail parties without knowing at least half of the fascinating places stuffed inside this unusually terrific guidebook. I now know where the Brady Bunch house is. I now know where Jim Morrison resided. I also know some pretty great things to do on a week-end. Some of it is just fun reading, while I would actually visit many of the places featured. These writers have a terrific sense of humor as well as seem to have their fingers on the pulse of an interesting Los Angeles. Good job!

superficial & unfunny
By dafilmmaker
I didn't find this funny. I thought it was superficial, sloppy and dumb. The number of places reviewed seems very slight, and their descriptions are overly long, as if they were trying to pad the book.

Not worth the paper it is printed on
By Ethyl
Perhaps all guide books should be destroyed as soon as they are six months old. I don't know, I just returned to LA after a 16 year absense, and I ordered a bunch of guide books to help me make the best out of this new adventure. This book really doesn't have much to offer.

Amazon.com Review
Over the years, New York Times cookbooks have won fans for their wide and winning recipe range. The New York Times Seafood Cookbook, edited by New York Times food writer Florence Fabricant, upholds the tradition, offering more than 250 recipes for nearly 100 kinds of fish and shellfish, presented alphabetically, from anchovies and barnacles to squid and yellowtail tuna. Additional chapters treat caviar and smoked fish and mixed seafood dishes, such as bouillabaisse, gumbos, and noodle preparations. The recipes come from contributors including chefs Mario Batali, Tom Colicchio, Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, and Fabricant herself.

From a vast recipe selection, dishes like Malaysian-Style Ginger Crab with Chile Sauce, Saucy Scallops with Spicy Bacon Corn Relish, and Roasted Cod with Niçoise Vinaigrette typify the "modern" dishes, while Corn and Lobster Chowder, Southern Fried Catfish and Hushpuppies, and a particularly nice seafood paella, exemplify more traditional fare. This is food that works for many occasions and that most readers can prepare pleasurably. Particularly useful, however, is the book's introductory material, which presents a wide range of topics--on today's expanded seafood market, environmental concerns, and acquaculture, among them--in concise, up-to-the-minute form. The usual rules concerning shopping, portion size, cooking techniques and the like are here too, but receive particularly sensible attention. (The wise shopper, says Fabricant, knows how to substitute one species for another when the market lacks a planned-on choice, finding substitutes that behave similarly in the pan to unavailable types.) The book's alphabetical organization (each entry also features a species "profile") allows readers to find specific information without hunting. Illustrated with color photos, the book offers truly useful information as well as that wide recipe range, as welcome now as ever. --Arthur Boehm

From Publishers Weekly
As Fabricant, a longtime writer for the dining section of the New York Times, notes in her introduction, the way Americans buy, cook and eat seafood has changed drastically over the last 50 or so years. Indeed, the recipes in this collection make use of a wide range of fish types and suggest numerous useful preparation methods. It's a shame, though, that the recipes have not been dated, as that might have made the book more useful in terms of culinary history. The recipes themselves, however, are streamlined and reliable. Within each chapter (fish, shellfish, caviar and smoked fish and mixed seafood preparations), recipes are grouped by the type of fish they feature, which are arranged in alphabetical order, so that the largest chapter, the one on fin fish, begins with anchovies (including a recipe for Puntarelle with Anchovies) and ends with yellowtail (Grilled Yellowtail with Mexican Marinade). Most fish types are introduced with an overview of the various types and possible substitutes, as in the explanation of flounder nomenclature. Some of the recipes come from famous-name chefs, such as a Croque-Monsieur with Salmon and Caviar from Eric Ripert of New York's fish temple Le Bernardin, and a Bean and Calamari Soup from Cesare Casella of the Tuscan restaurant Beppe. Other recipes, such as Alaskan Halibut and Salmon Gefilte Fish Terrine, illustrate a melting-pot cuisine particular to New York. A solid introduction provides tips for purchasing seafood and judging doneness and makes this generally excellent volume even more useful.

From Booklist
America's taste in seafood continues its evolutionary expansion. Where menus once featured only sole and trout, they now have tilapia and John Dory. Shrimp and scallops share space with barnacles and sea urchin. And every supermarket worth its name has a fresh fish department. In another of its comprehensive guides to cooking, The New York Times Seafood Cookbook takes on this new world of fish and shellfish. Times food writer Florence Fabricant begins with a summary of the seafood industry covering new products and health concerns. She then provides recipes for currently popular finfish. Articles from other Times food writers intersperse the recipes and provide detailed data on the origins and culinary uses of particular fish. For each fish there is a list of potential substitutes in case the basic fish isn't up to snuff at the fishmongers. Shellfish get similar coverage followed by a handful of recipes calling for both kinds of seafood. Most of the recipes originate from both New York and other American and foreign notable restaurants. This makes for a great range in recipe adaptability, with some recipes calling for sophisticated cooking techniques or difficult-to-obtain ingredients. Mark Knoblauch

Why did I leave this book on my sehfl for so long?
By E. Trent Vernon
I dont remember when I purchased this book... but I guess when I did, its lack of pictures didnt pull me in and it collected dust on my bookshelf.

Two days ago, I was going through my books and decided to thumb through it. I have since read it word for word cover to cover. The recipes all sound accessible, and wonderful. I have yet to make any, but can tell already that most will turn out wonderfully. (My first will be a salmon and beet tartar).

It has a nice introduction to each type of fish, followed by a couple of recipes for that type of fish. A couple of photos of a few of the finished dishes would have been nice, hence the 4 star rating instead of five.

There are some recent releases along the same vein as this book.. ie fish encyclopedia and what not, with lush photographs etc... but the New York Times recipes really seem to shine even without photos. But, if a photo heavy book is to your liking, then you should look elsewhere.

One other note I should point out, is that this book does tend to be 'East Coast' centric.. which would make sense considering its source. It is only noticeable because I live in los angeles, and you cant be further away from that side of the country than me. With the vast array of fishes in the book, you are sure to find a fish you would want to try.

So this book is a must buy for a person who loves different ways of fish cookery!

Simple in the Best Sense of the Word
By Ohioan
I love the simplicity of this book, starting with its organization into five chapters (not counting introductions, how-tos, preparation, portion sizes, etc.):

1. Fish A to Z
2. Shellfish A to Z
3. Fish Roes and Smoked Fish
4. Mixed Seafood (Bouillabaisse, Soups, etc.)
5. Stocks and Sauces

Imagine the ease of use of such a book: you buy a fish, you check it out in the first chapter. Haddock, say. You learn about it, what fish family it belongs to. You look at the one recipe offered for haddock and prepare it. Simplicity itself. But if you decide you don't want that recipe, you always have the option of going on to look at recipes for haddock relatives such as cod, scrod, hake, and the like. (The book tells you what the relatives are.)

I find this the most useful fish cookbook I've ever had.

Breath-taking delicious book of recipes and hints
By Janet Cousineau
This book has some of the best recipes and hints for seafood and fish that I have run across in years. I am no expert in the kitchen (yet .. but this book may change that, at least when it comes to fish and seafood!) but I found the recipes to be simple, straight forward and easy to follow. (and their tips for what wines to serve were a bonus!)
Accompanied by articles and tidbits about the seafood or fish the book was a fascinating and informative read.. I first took it out of the library and by the time I was half-way through the book I was ready to go to this site and buy it ... which I did immediately.
Any novie or expert cook will find this a MUST HAVE on their shelf of cookbooks ... it will make you want to east fish daily (as I already do... but now in a more tasty fashion!)

The best fish cookbook I've seen.
By A Customer
I cook a lot. My husband and daughter don't eat beef or chicken, so I am always looking for fish recipes. Food & Wine's Quick From Scratch Fish is full of EASY and DELICIOUS recipes. I use these recipes for dinner parties and they've all been successful. Everyone thinks that I've spent hours in the kitchen preparing the meal, but with these recipes it is so quick. I've bought this book as a gift for my sister-in-law and she loves it too. The pictures are great and the recipes are so quick. I highly recommend this cookbook.

Not Sure How Good it is Yet
By TBH
To be honest I only have tried one recipe from this book and I got that recipe from the interned, but since it supplied the name of the book the recipe came from and the price of the book was right (around $6 if I remember correctly) I purchased it. I do say I have gotten the majority of my really good recipes from Food and Wine though and I have hundreds of recipes.

From Library Journal
This book's subtitle suggests why these 300 films (of the approximately 6000 available) are included. Rovin, a consultant for Blockbuster Video, here applies the best/worst criteria to disc quality as well as to the film itself. Arranged alphabetically, each film receives a rating and a synopsis. For each, cast, director, running time, and history (or other tidbits of information) are listed. A guide to the technology includes a rating of audio and video quality, the laserdisc format (CLV or CAVS), the source, and whether or not there are chapters (i.e., scenes numbered for easy access). Technical descriptions discuss color, grain, "pan-and-scan," and letterboxing. The text is well written, although some entries are confusing; for instance, a bad review of the film is sometimes followed by a rave review of the quality of the disc. This feature actually makes the guide more useful for true laserphiles, since it allows them to collect by either film or disc quality. A glossary of laserdisc terminology is included. For subject collections.

Plague Wars: The Terrifying Reality of Biological Warfare, by Tom Mangold, Jeff Goldberg

Anthrax. Plague. Smallpox. Ebola. These are the weapons of the future—microscopic organisms produced in laboratories and unleashed on unwitting populations to reproduce, spread, and kill. They are as deadly as atomic bombs, much cheaper to create, and much easier to distribute—inside a warhead on an intercontinental missile, in an aerosol can sprayed in a crowded building, or by a crop-duster flying over a major city. Exposure occurs without warning. Infection from only a few minute particles can mean a ghastly and painful death. The kill rates are staggering.

Modern biological warfare began during the 1930s, when the Japanese Army conducted atrocious experiments on Chinese prisoners using lethal bacteria. During the Cold War, both the Soviet Union and the U.S. rushed to build biological weapons programs. In 1972, the Biological Weapons Convention banned the development of bioweapons, supposedly ending the threat.

But the threat was only beginning. Plague Wars tells the stories of the secret battles that are still being waged in many nations, stories filled with international espionage, deceptions, and treachery. Recently, defectors and covert sources from third-world governments such as Iraq have revealed active biological weapons programs, despite international arms inspectors' attempts to eradicate them. A U.S. war game to prepare for a North Korean biological attack went so horribly wrong that the results are still classified. In South Africa, the use of bioweapons represents one of the last untold secrets of the apartheid battles, while in Zimbabwe, people are still dying of anthrax from the dirty wars of independence fought two decades ago. Fringe cults, apocalyptic madmen, and terrorists groups everywhere claim to own bioweapons, and are threatening to use them. Major Western cities are busily planning defenses against such an attack.

Researched across four continents with exceptional access to many sources from the United Nations, U.S. Department of Defense, and various civilian and military intelligence agencies, and using previously classified government documents, Tom Mangold and Jeff Goldberg have written the definitive account of the state of biological warfare in the world today.

"Fascinating . . . An excellent and timely introduction to this alarming subject."—Washington Times

“Plague Wars is able to cut a straight and well-focused path through the

Plague Wars
By Prauge Traveler
Tom Mangold and Jeff Goldberg have written a great book. From the fields of WW2 till the UNSCOM inspectors in Iraq, the curtains have been lifted on the horrific topic of biological weapons and their development. This book belongs on the same shelf as Laurie Garrett's "The Coming Plague"; only this is even more frightening. Where "The Coming Plague" details the natural occurance of viral outbreaks and bacterial infections- and the individuals involved with their containment, "Plague Wars" delves into humanity's dark attempts to harness these powers and apply them not to heal, but to kill. You need not be an expert in biology to understand this, and Mangold and Goldberg have a highly accessable writing style. The chapters vary from a journalistic perspective to factual story telling that uses the participant's own words whenever possible. The major topics of include the Cold War until the BWC of 1972, then the Soviet Union's disregard of that document, South Africa, Iraq and finally the future of BW. All of these areas are well researched and fascinating. The masterminds behind the programs of South Africa and the USSR will become names that you will not forget. These are some very bad people.
One weak point is the reliance on "Confidential Interviews" as a source in the footnotes. This is explained in the begining as protecting sources that might otherwise be endangered. Still, it is frustrating.
It is claimed by experts, quoted in this book, that a major biological attack on a large US city should be expected within 10 to 15 years. Considering the lack of preparation that is apparent in most cities, this is a very scary thought. For as you will learn, once a biological attack has been unleashed it is already too late.
Reading this book has left me believing that what we need is to create a highly proficient BW team that can, if possible, stop an attack before it begins- going on the offensive rather than defensive.
"Plague Wars" is an excellent work.

GREAT BOOK AND GREAT HISTORY
By Amazon Customer
Four years later I re read this book (written 1999) and found it to be just as or perhaps more worrisome. The authors have done a great job of offering a cafeteria approach to a foundational understanding of the bio weapon threat. Yes, there are some limitations as others have described. The authors have not described in great detail the US bio weapons program (it is rather unlikely that your neighborhood will be attacked by the US), other authors have gone into much greater depth on individual programs and many of the sources are confidential. The authors were aware of these issues and took pains to both describe the process and to illuminate the limitations.

Instead of creating an encyclopedia of international bio weapons programs the authors provide illuminating glimpses into the corners of this dark world. The book "reads light" and easily as the result of the author's skills and their level of presentation. Seriously interested readers will, of course, want to read further. However, this is a book I want on my bookshelf this year, next year and ten years from now, both for my reference and to loan to friends with in interest in learning about the threat.

Four or five years later I am also struck with the amount of revisionist history being practiced in this area. The book, described by the NY Times as, among other things, being especially well researched, leaves no doubt that the authors, Clinton administration and the Ritter's Australian successor at UNSCOM believed that Saddam absolutely had an active bio weapons program which posed a real threat to the United States homeland. The Clinton administration, which the authors applaud for their understanding of the problem, even sponsored an exercise featuring an Iraqi bio weapons attack on the US. In addition to the background on bio warfare the book leaves an indelible record of what people really believed at this time.

SOOOO SCARY!!!!!!
By Bookworm Mom
I did not think I was going to like this book because it was written before 9-11 and therefore I thought was out-of-date. UNTRUE! Although this book concentrates on biological warfare and not on airplanes used as missiles, there were people warning about terrorists making an attack on this nation long before it happened. I live near Houston and the first chapter describes a hypothetical scenario that was played out by the military involving some people from the Iraqi government holding hostages at Bush International Airport and dousing them with several biological agents. In a few days, the city of Houston was reduced to martial law according to the forecasts. It gave me chills. This is a very good book if you want to know what our enemies can do without using airplanes to crash into buildings.

The Pythons: Autobiography

Over thirty years ago, a group of five Englishmen and one wayward American, re-wrote the rules of comedy. Monty Python's Flying Circus, an unheralded, previously unseen and practically unprogrammed half hour of sketches, hilarities, inanities and animations first appeared on the BBC late one night in 1969. Its impact on the world has been felt ever since.

From its humble beginnings as late night entertainment on a British TV channel that went off the air before midnight, it blossomed into arguably the most influential movement in modern comedy. They found the Holy Grail, they detailed the life of the Savior-also-ran Brian, and when we were lost, they explained The Meaning of Life.

Now, those purveyors of dead parrots and silly walks are going to tell us something more: Their story. In their own, intimate, never before heard words.

The Pythons by The Pythons is the definitive word on all things Pythonesque (the only word invented by a modern comedian which is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary.) 30 years of insight, hindsight, and bad sight - now told for the first time. Stuff they're never remembered before alongside stories they'd forgotten to say, coupled with things they couldn't say then and even more things they can't pronounce now (with a healthy dollop of things they would never have said in the first place if any others had been in the room at the time.)

The Pythons by The Pythons is a unique look at arguably the most important comic team of the modern age, lavishly illustrated with 1000 photographs and illustrations, many culled from the teams' own personal collections, many seen here for the first time. A tome, a tombstone, the definitive word on all things Python, as told by all things Python - do you want Spam with that?

One of the GOOD books on Python!
By A Customer
At this point, there have been many, many tomes written on the now-legendary British comedy troupe Monty Python. The best of them are: George Melly's "The Life of Python" (one of the few written before member Graham Chapman's death); Kim Howard Johnson's two titles, "First 20 Years of Monty Python" and "Life Before and After Monty Python"; and David Morgan's "Monty Python Speaks." This 16 ton autobiography is quite good but, if you've read any or all of the aforementioned books, there will be far fewer suprises here. The way in which this book stands out from the rest is the increased detail of many of the oft-told tales and a handful of newer (if somewhat trivial) revelations. The larger reveals seem to take place during their individual childhoods and events which took place near the end of their partnership, with much detail given involving the writing of "Meaning of Life" and the proposed '90s reunion which never materialized. Also welcome are the comments of Chapman's brother John who provides a new perspective on the most conflicted Python. If you do not own or have never read any of the other finer titles, this could very well be considered the one stop shop for all Monty knowledge. There is NO editorializing in this book, simply anecdote after anecdote from those involved. This, and the other titles, are probably of most interest to those interested in the art of comedy writing in that they are largely accounts of the creation of the material and group dynamic. A great book!

This Book Is Absolutely Amazing
By Katherine Pirkle
If you are a Monty Python lover, this is something you MUST OWN.
As a Monty Python fan who owns just about every video, DVD, book, album, etc. there is, I have to say that this blows away everything I've ever owned. When I opened up the package and did a quick look-over of the book, I almost passed out with joy. There have been *many* Python books that are good or OK, but this is just fabulous. The information is right out of the mouths of the Pythons (much like "Monty Python Speaks," but to an even greater extent). The pictures are new (to most people) and beautiful. It is obvious that somebody took enormous pride in the making of this book.
Other than the GARGANTUAN size of the book, there is nothing negative I can say. This giant, heaping pile of Python is fantabulous and waiting for you to buy it.

The Life Of Monty
By o dubhthaigh
In many ways, this large tome is infinitely more satisfying than any of their shows, movies and records because of just how funny, sad, amazing, hysterical, and bizarre the reality is. They were quite a jolt to American TV and International film, but in fact, followed in a rather historical line directly from the Goon Show, Morecombe and Wise, David Frost. British comedy really had no where else to go but the land of the Pythons.
Here in this book you'll get what amounts to 6, and sometimes more, accounts of how they came together via their Oxford and Cambridge revues, to spot each other as worthy colleagues. Certainly, it was writing for Frost that sealed the decision, but even as the essential teams of Cleese and Chapman, Jones and Palin had coalesced with Gilliam and Idle idling in the between them, you get from their stories pre and post Monty that they knew they were destined to work with each other almost from their first meetings. Jones comes across as the sensible Welshman with a keen ear for Everyman/woman. Palin is the adorable naughty fellow with a nod and a wink, whose ability to fend off the assaults of Cleese and Chapman made for the most memorable moments in Python history. Cleese seemed shot out of a cannon at birth and never looked down. His ability and courage to push the envelope as far as he could (it was likely he who suggested they do away with punch lines) gave them an insanity that was extraordinarily daring. Who else would have the chutzpah to intone in LIFE OF BRIAN among the Jewish rebels, "What have the Romans done for us lately?" Idle is the charmer, and the smarmy raconteur who seemed most equipped to handle the bridge between the Oxford and Cambridge camps. And it was his friendship with George Harrison that enabled Monty to actually tackle LIFE in all its repercussions. Chapman is the tragic figure in all of this. Self-deprecating, guilt ridden "my parents were quite unprepared to have begat a homosexual. They'd have much preferred a heterosexual black Jew,", he pursued a life of excess that often left the others hanging in the balance, and yet it was Chapman as the quintessentially clueless upper class Brit that seemed to identify how disconnected stratas fo British society had become. His Brian was perhaps even more of a compassionate hero for the ages than the genuine character he was meant to allude to, and yet he offered none of that sympathy to himself. Gilliam seemed always odd man in, and fit the others like a bad suit, which was what made him that perfect finishing touch for the remarkable trajectory in the Life of Monty.
They hold nothing back, and the ugly squabbles, the anxieties, the dismay at Chapman's self-destructive activities are also frankly and compassionately addressed. Much like the Beatles, once Chapman succumbed to Aids and then cancer, there would be no real reunion effort. The fellowship had indeed been broken. Various members of the team managed to get on each other's nerves from time to time. Cleese's legendary arrogant contrariness is clearly on display. There was always more Basil Fawlty to him that he was quite prepared to self-parody than you may have guessed. And through it all, even as they re-convened for this project (much like the Beatles' ANTHOLOGY), there is that undeniable creativity. No one has ever acheived what they have in comedy, save possibly the Marx Brothers.
The book is beautifully put together, and covers their story thus far. If you are a fan, you will positively love this. Each of them is given all they room they need, even Chapman, to tell it from their angular vision. Taking all the angles together, it makes for quite a story.

Harvard's Secret Court: The Savage 1920 Purge of Campus Homosexuals, by William Wright

In 2002, a researcher for The Harvard Crimson came across a restricted archive labeled "Secret Court Files, 1920." The mystery he uncovered involved a tragic scandal in which Harvard University secretly put a dozen students on trial for homosexuality and then systematically and persistently tried to ruin their lives.

In May of 1920,Cyril Wilcox, a freshman suspended from Harvard, was found sprawled dead on his bed, his room filled with gas--a suicide. The note he left behind revealed his secret life as part of a circle of (cut "young") homosexual students. The resulting witch hunt and the lives it cost remains one of the most shameful episodes in the history of America's premiere university. Supported by legendary Harvard President Lawrence Lowell, Harvard conducted its investigation in secrecy. Several students committed suicide;others had their lives destroyed by an ongoing effort on the part of Harvard to destroy their reputations. Harvard's Secret Court is a deeply moving indictment of the human toll of intolerance and the horrors of injustice that can result when a powerful institution loses its balance.

From Publishers Weekly
In this repetitive and somewhat melodramatic narrative, prolific biographer Wright (Born That Way, etc.) tells the astonishing story of a group of Harvard students who were expelled in 1920 for homosexual conduct. After the suicide of Cyril Wilcox, a gay student, Harvard's president authorized a "Secret Court" of deans and scholars to investigate the sexual life of a group of students who often hosted sailors, drag queens and "boys from town" in covert dorm-room dance parties. Fueled by a desire to rid Harvard of homosexuality entirely, the committee's harsh treatment led to the suicide of another student and permanently ruined the careers of a few others. Wright has gotten this story from the proceedings of the court, which—along with personal letters and other documents—survived untouched in a massive classified file in the Harvard archives until 2002, when a reporter from the Harvard Crimson discovered it. Wright's painstaking attention to each student interrogation, family history and Secret Court administrator, along with his distracting authorial commentary, may leave some readers wishing that he had confined this story to a magazine article. Nevertheless, Wright succeeds in compiling a drama that will satisfy readers thirsty for pop-historical scandals from our nation's unregenerate past. (Oct.)

From Booklist
The Nathan Marsh Pusey Library houses the Harvard Archives, a collection of three centuries' worth of records on the university's employees, buildings, clubs, curricula, and students. Hidden in it for some 80 years were accounts of a "brutal and destructive" purge of homosexuals at Harvard and the secret court that conducted it. After Cyril Wilcox killed himself in 1920, his brother Lester's inquiries reverberated from Boston to Broadway. Armed with two incriminating letters and a list of 10 names that came from a gay cafe owner tracked via those letters, Lester confronted Dean Chester Grenough, who found in the documents proof of a homosexual network of undergraduates. Five men selected by president A. Lawrence Lowell were ordered to stamp out the apparent plague. They led a witch hunt that destroyed many lives, sometimes literally through suicide. Wright's rediscovery of this shocking incident constitutes a timely reminder to history buffs, sociologists, and general readers alike of the effects of organized intolerance. Whitney Scott

Good information, tedious style
By Higby
The book contains important information about a gay tribunal at Harvard that led to several suicides. A difficult read because the writing is passionless and repetitive. The author speculates too much, hitting the possible motives of every incident from every possible angle in a way that becomes boring and pedantic. I would have liked more background on the gay history of the period rather than the final, long essay on homosexuality which is a rehash of everything you already know.

A Vengeful Harvard College Eats Its Own
By A reader from Boston, MA
William Wright has revealed an astonishing and gruesomely fascinating episode in American history in this investigation of a roundup of students at Harvard College who were homosexual or indulging in homosexuality. Following the suicide of a student who had been left by his Boston cafe-owning lover, a secret court was established whose major governing influence was the college president, the beloved A. Lawrence Lowell, better known for his part in sending Sacco and Vanzetti to the electric chair, changing the acceptance procedure to ensure that the number of Jews admitted to the college was limited, and attempting to prevent black students from living in dormitories. This secret court "requested" the appearance of anybody from the Boston/Cambridge area who it felt had influenced its precious charges in such a loathsome and immoral way, and all such "requests" to appear were respected, even though the persons subpoenaed by this kangaroo court were in danger of having their reputations destroyed. But the book primarily investigates the students involved, the facts of the investigation and the future lives of the accused, one of whom committed suicide immediately after questioning and another after 10 years, his life having been, for all intents and purposes, ruined by the influence of his expulsion from Harvard. Some of the expelled recovered to one degree or another from the experience to eke out decent lives. One became a very influential and politically connected jurist. The story is heartbreaking and the cruelty and vindictiveness of the court staggering. Wright takes no prisoners in delineating the facts. Bizarrely, however, after observing that Lowell left his fortune to a Harvard-related philanthropic organization, Wright notes that it is his mistakes that are remembered, "perhaps unjustly". Such a generous judgment is hard to explain. This book is vividly illuminating of the overweening arrogance of WGU (World's Greatest University), the hysteria surrounding homosexuality in the U.S. post-WWI, the potential for a hateful cruelty among conservative Brahmin educators, and human resiliency and human tragedy in the face of a vengeful witch-hunting elite.
