Although the Soviets maintain that the Hitler-Stalin nonaggression agree ment of 1939 was aimed at gaining time to prepare for war against the Germans, Leonhard argues the consensus view of Western historians that the acquisition of Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and part of Rumania was the overriding factor. In this short, instructive study, the author scans the bewildered, horrified and furious reactions of Communists and fellow travelers around the world to the news that the Soviet Union, regarded as the standard-bearer of anti-Fascism, had be trayed the faithful. Leonhard places special emphasis on the reaction of German Communists, whose underground opposition to Fascism had been conducted under exceptionally harsh conditions. He also traces the delayed disillusionment with Soviet Communism experienced by well-known figures of the day for whom the Pact was the ultimate personal political crisis: Louis Fischer, Granville Hicks, Arthur Koestler among them. Leonhard, a German Communist who lived in Russia until his defection to the West in 1949, taught at Yale until his recent retirement.

Leonhard's Betrayal represents an admirable attempt to document both the reactions and fate of international Communists to the infamous pact between the dictators. The views of such noted functionaries as Erich Honecker, Josip Tito, and Milovan Djilas are recounted, along with a long list of lesser known figures of the Comintern. Leonhard (a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a former professor at Yale) rejects the idea that the pact allowed Russia to better prepare for war, arguing that, if anything, it weakened the country for the struggle which the treaty ensured would soon commence. He also makes an impassioned call to the Soviets to admit to the secret protocols of the treaty which effectively divide Eastern Europe between Hitler and Stalin. Suitable for libraries with large Eastern European collections.

Well Written and wonderful book on the life of Mother Cabrini.

I enjoyed this book so much. Not your typical "saint" book. The character and humanity of Mother Cabrini as well as her saintliness was wonderfully explored by Di Donato. I love all his books. This one in particular is a gem!

This was a wonderful biography that read like a novel

This was a wonderful biography that read like a novel. What a wise, brave, and loving woman Mother Cabrini was, helping immigrants in America at the turn of the century. Their conditions were deplorable and she brought them hope, along with schools, hospitals, and the Church. There are many thoughtful and beautifully expressed quotes of hers throughout. Highly recommend. Do not have to be religious to enjoy.

Written with the dispassion of an intelligence report, Halevy's memoir turns out to be a 20-year political history that includes much secret maneuvering but little skullduggery. Born in London in 1934, Halevy joined the Mossad in 1961 and quickly moved up to become a deputy division chief. His book opens in 1988-89, when the end of the Iran-Iraq war and the invasion of Kuwait suddenly changed the terms of Mideastern politics. The U.S. increased pressure on Israel to settle its Palestinian problem, and the first intifada heated up. Diplomatic progress was glacial; most of it involved careful political negotiations, dully detailed. The text perks up when Halevy becomes head of Mossad in 1998 and al-Qaeda enters the world stage by blowing up two U.S. embassies in Africa. Halevy delivers insightful and often acerbic portraits of world leaders and shows a surprising sympathy toward the Arab point of view. He also describes several operational fiascoes that made the news, but he writes as a loyal Israeli bureaucrat, so secrets stay put. (Apr. 18)

Excellent read

It is true that this book is not riddled with "cloak and dagger fireworks" but, it is not at al true that it is nothign more than a self-glorifying account of a man's own actions, as one reviewer has said.

Halevy describes how events over the last 10-20 years have unfolded in the middle east, and in the process relates how the individual characteristics of the various leaders invovled helped to shape them. His accounts of the larger than life life people he describes are plain, to the point, and overall extremely insightful. He recounts, with much insight, the victories and successes of the last 2 decades. He furthermore, does not shy from describing, in detail, both his own failures and those of others.

This book is an excellent read for those truly interested in the actuall manner and circumstance of the unfolding of history.

Intelligent writing/reading

Yes, it is true. There are no cloak-and-dagger fireworks. Go to the paperback section for that. Every few dozen pages there is some repetitive item. Never mind, skip it. Here and there you'll come across a sentence you just cannot parse, no meaning. Skip again.

But in its totality it is a tremendous read! It conveys a vivid and clear picture how events get shaped. It is an extraodinarily low key and high quality education in appreciating that everyday history is crucially dependent on the character, qualities and frailties of the people participating in the events. So much, once more, for the marxist delusion of "historical necessity" and irrelevance of personalities.

Perhaps this is the crux and lesson and even, chance for optimism, of this book. As much as many (most?) miseries and catastrophies came from the many and various follies of man, perhaps one could hope that wise conversation might avert some future catastrophies.

i love this kind of books .as a person who is living in the middle east which lived a lot of wars and conflicts between the arabs and the israeles i alaways search on the books talk about such a topic . this man mr halevy because his possision as a post leader of mossad explains and clears every thing about the middle east crisis. in a good degree of objectivety in a way that gives the reader who does not no any thing about the middle east a good background he is simple , clear , no complcations as he is chating with you or as when our moms told us stories before sleeping when we were young . it is a book you can read in the week end , in the holiday , in the tunel before going to the work >

Recipes for BBQ Lovers!

I love to browse through different cookbooks. I have quite a collection, and usually go to the library to find new recipes to try before I decide to purchase the entire book. I normally look for 3 things in a cookbook, besides delicious recipes that will work for my family. This includes:

1) Pictures of more than ¾ of the recipes (Color pictures are the best)

2) A spiral binding, or at least on that easily lays flat

3) New & innovative recipes that have ingredients I can easily find at a grocery store

For this book, I was intrigued by the amount of different barbeque recipes that it contained, grouped by season so that you choose different recipes from winter, summer, spring, and fall. Like many people, I mainly use my barbeque during the warm summer months, but this book gave us a ton of new ideas for recipes that appeal all year long.

The downside of the book was that it offered no photographs, and was not in a binding that laid flat. I liked the recipes, but thought that the lack of pictures of the finished products could hold some back from purchasing the book.

Some of our favorites include: Sautéed White Mushrooms, Rack of Pork, Dr. BBQ Barbecued Barbecue Shrimp, Shamrock Potatoes, Fake Sugar Cupcakes, and Peachy Pork Steaks. Enjoy!

This book touches on some general recipes...but not much in the way of
specifics. A little chicken, some beef, some pork, etc.

Not too bad...although, for me, I got more info from books such as
"BBQ USA", "The Barbecue! Bible" & "Better Homes And Gardens New Grilling
Book"...

Great BBQ Book

I gave bought this book as a gift for my son. He is just learning to barbecue and I thought this would give him more ideas for his grill. He LOVES the book and I am very pleased with the purchase. The book contains recipes all kinds of meats, fowl, and seafoods, as well as recipes for side dishes, salads and desserts. I highly recommend this book for any new barbecuer, or someone looking to expand their recipe/cooking skills.

Gotta Have It!

We've used both editions of this wonderful book endlessly. It's a great blend of the off-beat to standard places to visit. Nothing is overlooked, from outlet malls to antique stalls. The bed and breakfast recommendations are faultless. The food sites range from gourmet to subs. We've had a ball investigating the off-the-beaten-track museums and other tourist attractions the authors recommend. Included, just to spice up the reading, are local legends and profiles of the towns and local celebrities. A guaranteed good time -- even if you pass on actual travel and just read the book!

out of date & nothing that hasn't been done better by others

Having read numerous books about NJ, I find this one lacking. It's 10 years old first of all, and there are recent books that cover the ground much better. In particular I liked New jersey Getaways because of it's solid information. Now thats not to say this book doesn't have a lot of information, but the title says "Day Tripping, Backroads, Eateries, and Funky Adventures" Half the book at least is about eateries. Half! I think a book about places to eat in jersey is an intersting concept but at least let people know thats the subject matter. This book is NOT about day trips IMHO. If this bookmwas supposed to be about eateries, it might rate 3 stars. A a "day tripping book" this is worth 1 star. Much better can be found elsewhere.

Some serious overrating, thus far

Ever read the Chamber of Commerce description of a town only to find upon visiting it that no such place exists. Beware, these guys either have low standards or Governor Whitman has hired them to write this book. I included their advice in two day trips I took with my wife, and was embarassed to have driven out of my way to see sights most peoople would pass by. I advise you use the book to fill in the possible dull moments, but don't base a total trip around their suggestions.

Wiltse's brooding 12th novel veers between thriller set pieces and oracular social commentary. At the start of his first adventure (Heartland, 2001), battered Secret Service agent Billy Tree exiled himself to his native Nebraska, where, as deputy sheriff, he dealt with more crime than he had bargained for. Now the solemn Tree is (vainly) hoping once more to live the simple life. Naturally, there's trouble aplenty in little Falls City, though of the smalltown variety: two-timing women, busted-up cars, a dead dog and, most iniquitous by far, a lynching, long-buried but whispered about in town folklore. Murky flashbacks provide a progressively more detailed picture of the awful crime from generations ago. In the present, someone anonymously leaves Billy a small hangman's noose, repeating the gesture more than once. This and the sudden arrival of strapping black Odette Collins (a long-forgotten high school sports rival) give Billy more than pause. Ostensibly a thriller, Wiltse's novel clearly aims at something deeper, with only partial success. The dour, stubborn Billy is not the most engaging or empathetic hero. Many scenes are followed by Billy's lengthy (and unintegrated) pondering of his feelings, motives and prejudices. Aesthetics aside, such self-absorption is not the same thing as depth nor does it serve to win over the reader. Similarly, Wiltse can't resist bald lecturing when persuasive storytelling would be more effective. He does better with mood and local color, incisively capturing the rhythms and details of rural life.

Everyone who has driven through Nebraska knows how murderous thoughts can take hold. Wiltse showcases murder against the bleak backdrop of the Nebraska plains, the unforgiving landscape a good match for his characters. Returning is Acting Deputy Sheriff Billy Tree of Falls City, a fallen Secret Service agent first seen in Heartland (2000). Tree is still barely holding it together with police work and his girlfriend when he finds a tiny, perfectly knotted hangman's noose on his front door knob. Nooses start appearing all over town, mostly on the doors and in the homes of the prominent. Tree makes a disturbing connection between the new nooses, a long-ago lynching in Falls City, and the arrival of a black stranger in town. Wiltse is a wonderfully atmospheric writer, who makes listening to corn grow sound exciting. This heart-pounding mystery takes an unflinching look at historic and contemporary racial hatred. Wiltse weaves the storylines into the fabric of a solid piece of work. Simultaneously, he blends jealousy, racial prejudice, small town life in the midWest, infidelity, loyalty, and family into a superb work. If anyone passes up this work, he or she will miss out.

Odd, disjointed mystery novel

Billy Tree is the hero of Heartland, from a couple of years ago. He's a small-town boy who joined the Secret Service, and became a hero for his actions in a shootout with a lunatic. Unknown to virtually everyone, he completely lost control of himself in the shootout and basically now is a complete coward. He's terrified of guns and confrontations, and will do anything to avoid them, so he's decided to pass his time working as a deputy sheriff in his small hometown. In this second book he goes a long way to avoid things he didn't need to, and gets himself in way over his head when things don't go the way he thinks they will.
This book is mostly about a lynching that happened over 50 years before the time the book took place, and the repercussions that result from it, through the years. It involves one whopper of a coincidence, and a lot of misconceptions, mistaken identities, and confused motives. At the end of the book you're still not entirely certain what happened, and it's apparent that the main characters aren't sure either. While the book does have an interesting plot, and some action that keeps it moving, it also can be just annoying. There's a scene where one character repeatedly refers to the "weapon" because saying anything else would give away to the reader something the author wishes to conceal, for instance. Anyway, I enjoyed the book, but not that much, and I think I'd be wary of recommending it.

The lynching from so long ago is destined to affect Billy and others close to him in more ways than he can imagine.
Although Billy is a good man who is admired by his fellow townsfolk, he constantly battles his own feelings of jealousy and prejudice and never believes that he his worthy of their admiration. This book deals quite sensitively with race issues and prejudices and the way, not only Billy tries to fight them, but the way the greater population still accepts them.
Wiltse manages to describe rural Nebraska so poetically that he makes what would normally be considered a boring landscape of flat fields of corn seem beautiful and special to behold. His description of a Nebraska sunset had me ready to pack up my belongings and head straight to the cornfields myself.

An Analogy to North Korea's Behaviors Today

As the year 2000 marks the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, this book is quite thought-provoking as it meticulously describes how President Syngman Rhee of South Korea struggled to ensure the survival and rehabilitation of his country in the closing days of the war and how he interrelated state security with the survival of his regime as his popularity declined in later years. The book, well documented based on extensive source materials and interviews the author had with personalities concerned, is also instructive for its implications that help its readers better understand the political mentality and negotiation behaviors of Korean leaders, be they communists or West-oriented politicians like Rhee who was educated at Princeton and Harvard and who lived for decades in exile in the United States. One can draw an analogy between various unilateral actions taken by Rhee in his attempt to secure better terms in armistice talks and ultimately a firm U.S. security and economic commitment to his country, as illustrated in the book, and the brinkmanship that North Korea's Kim Il-sung and his son, Kim Jong-il, have employed in their deals with the U.S. in recent years for the survival of their state and regime, playing nuclear and missile cards. As Rhee turned out to be the very victim of his inflexible policy governing the interaction between state security and regime security, it is to be seen how North Korea will manage a similar interaction and what sort of fate it will face as the result.

The life of Tina Modotti is the stuff of enduring legend. Born in Udine, Italy, in 1896, Tina Modotti immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen, settling with her family in San Francisco in order to escape the misery and poverty of the world from which they came. Modotti initially sought work in the local silk factory and as a dressmaker, but her beauty and poise soon launched her into a career as a silent film actress and artist's model. It was through her work as a model that she met photographer Edward Weston. Though already married to California poet Roubaix de l'Abrie Richey (known as Robo), Modotti fell in love with Weston and with photography and left with him for Mexico in 1922.

It was in Mexico that Modotti blossomed, both as a talented artist and as a fiery and dedicated worker for the cause of the revolutionary left, and where she befriended artists Rivera and Frieda Kahlo. However, in 1929 Modotti, long under suspicion by the Mexican police, was arrested in connection with the murder of Julio Antonio Mella, a Cuban revolutionary and also her lover. Though the real killers were never identified, the Mexican press raised a scandal by publishing nude photographs of Modotti taken by Weston and depicting her as a woman of easy virtue. She was eventually exiled from Mexico. Denied re-entry to the United States, Modotti fled first to Germany and then to Moscow, where she abandoned her photography and worked as a bureaucrat for the Communist Party and traveled on clandestine missions for the "Red Rescue."

In 1936 Modotti moved to Spain, where she met Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Andre Malraux, and Robert Capa. Although Capa tried to encourage her to take up her photography again, Modotti was by now dedicating herself exclusively to political militancy. At the fall of the Spanish Republic in 1939, Modotti returned to Mexico, where she died on January 5, 1942.

In this internationally acclaimed biography, Pino Cacucci brings the adventurous, riveting, and tragic story of Tina Modotti to life. In 1913 Italian-born Modotti (1896-1943) immigrated to the United States, where she enthusiastically embraced both radical politics and photographer Edward Weston, the first of many prominent men who would love the charismatic artist. Apart from the formally rigorous, socially engaged photographs that made her reputation, Modotti's most ardent passions were for revolutionary Mexico, where she lived from 1922 to 1930, and for Communist activist Julio Mella, whose murder in 1929 engulfed her in the juicy scandal with which Italian journalist Cacucci opens his dishy biography. Modotti spent the 1930s serving the Soviet Union's interests in many of the world's hot spots, notably Spain during its vicious civil war; commitment to Communism gave her a sense of stability her turbulent personal affairs did not. She died mysteriously four years after her return to Mexico, by rumor at the hands of Stalinist poisoners. Cacucci's fascination with abstruse Communist ideological squabbles may not be shared by all readers, and his methodology is decidedly slapdash: he doesn't provide footnotes, and pages of direct dialogue have no discernable source other than the author's imagination. The photographer and Communist organizer Tina Modotti (18961942) lived in a seeming whirlwind of artistic creation and personal and political intrigue. Two new biographies trace her life as she developed her immense artistic skill, loved passionately, and eventually sacrificed her art to her work for social justice through the Communist Party. In a brief and clipped work, Italian journalist Cacucci lays out the machinations of Modottis life. He sketches a chronology of her love lifeincluding her relationships with the young poet known as Robo, the photographer Edward Weston, the Cuban revolutionary Julio Antonio Mella, and the menacing Soviet operative Vidali Vittorioand seems unduly fascinated by the power of Modottis beauty. As a result, she comes off as a frail social climber, and the book is tiring at best. On the other hand, in the most complete and readable biography of Modotti to date, Albers, a curator and writer, portrays a complex woman who made extraordinary life choices in an attempt to unite personal desires with the social realities of her time. While men were important to Modotti (she once playfully proclaimed them to be her profession), she was a thoroughly modern woman who cared most about navigating the wavering balance between life, art, and the need for social change. Albers avoids casting Modotti in a clich, acknowledging that she was never entirely free of either the fear of impoverishment or the encumbering domestic role women were expected to play. Rather, Modottis mind was often absorbed in the minutiae of life: setting up households, making pasta, planning art shows, and facilitating Party efforts. When considered in this context, Modotti seems more inspired workhorse than princessand all the more interesting for the added detail. Libraries can avoid Cacuccis effort, but Alberss is essential. Here's a blockbuster romance waiting to be filmed: Beautiful, gifted Italian immigrant turns Soviet spy and is loved by Edward Weston, befriended by Diego Rivera and Frieda Kahlo, and, after her mysterious death, mourned by Pablo Neruda. According to Italian writer and journalist Cacucci, Modotti came to the US from Italy in 1913. She was 17, strikingly attractive, and enigmatically compelling to the poet/painter whom she soon married and followed to Los Angeles. Her voluptuous figure gained her femme fatale Hollywood roles, but she abandoned cinema in favor of an intense affair with photographer Weston, who introduced her to the still camera. Modotti and Weston headed for Mexico City, where Tina involved herself in the postrevolutionary artistic and political ferment. In their circle were artists Rivera, Xavier Guerrero, David Siqueiros, and others who influenced her politics and her work. Increasingly sure-footed in her photographs of street life, she ``opened the door to social documentary,'' according to the author. Nevertheless, her hard-line Communist stance forced her to flee Mexico for Moscow. Giving up photography, Modotti alternated Politburo duties with political espionage, landing in Spain during the Civil War. Reassigned to the US, she was deported to Mexico, where she backed off from the Communist Party, disillusioned by the Hitler/Stalin pact and the first assassination attempt on Trotsky (then in Mexico). She died in 1943 in a taxi, en route home from a dinner party. Was it suicide or assassination? No sure answer. This biography was published in Italy in 1991 and has been translated somewhat stiffly into English by Duncan . More troubling than the stops and starts of the translation are the intermittent ``you-are-there'' dialoguesbetween, for instance, Modotti and a Mexican prosecutor, and Modotti and lover Julio Mello. Who was present to record these conversations? A life of mystery, passion, dedication, and talent that begs, ``Tell us more.'' LAUGHABLE for its historical value

Although I agree that San Francisco was home to many artistic and cultural activities that make it distict from any other American city, to assert that it was "Not founded by Anglo-Saxon Protestants, San Francisco developed as a city without Puritan influences, much like the great European cities that favored radical innovations and a healthy indifference toward conventional morality." (can you taste the superiority of the european writer in that quote?)
Anyone who believes that does not know who founded San Fransisco. Guess what. It was Mormons. Yep. They pulled into the bay and off loaded from the Good Ship The Brooklyn, before the gold rush and mass influx of others. Before that, it had been all but abandon as a Presidio by the Spanish. And since I know my history, I can tell you the Mormons of that time had more in common with the Puritanism of the original colonies than other Anglos. But that is just one of the stretches... Of course the Mormons were over run with the advent of the Gold Rush. San Francisco has been a pendulum that swings back and forth from anarchy to corruption in its city government in the last 150 years.
As for the rest of the book, take out some of the added quasi-history spices and it would have been much more valuable, or at least worth recommending. But maybe I shouldn't look at it for historical value, but as a great romance?

Jansen (English, Pacific Lutheran Univ., Washington; Political Protest and Prophecy under Henry VIII, Boydell & Brewer, 1991) has researched the cases of several English women, including Margaret Cheyne, Elizabeth Barton, Elizabeth Wood, and Mabel Brigge, accused of treason during the early 16th century. These women were not victims of the men around them, Jansen asserts, but were active, vocal critics of the reforms of Henry VIII. Although they had no formal power, they gained some agency by publicly expressing their views on topics such as the break with Rome and Henry's divorce of Queen Catherine and subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn. Jansen feels the women saw these moves as a threat to the stability of their own marriages. This well-researched work has extensive notes and a good bibliography. Capable, Suprising, Significant, . . . and Fun!

Jansen's work is delightful, insightful, and, moreover, significant and relevant in her field. Both a measurement and a promotion of the much-needed dusting-off of the historical view, this book helps re-define the scope of political and popular protest in the sixteenth-century.
The use of footnotes was greatly helpful for this reader. The main body of the work is delightful to read, and by using footnotes the author allows one to keep reading and look up things one would like to know more about. What footnotes they are, too! No simple "Ibids" here... they are substantive and revealing.
My only criticism of the book is that the author is that in order to get the most out of this book, you must teach yourself the significance of the material. The author lays out the material and nudges you along, but you must make your brain digest the larger scope of it all. It could be a little more didactic on a larger scale.
In all, though, this book was a great investigation into the sixteenth-century resistance to the reforms of Henry VII by women. I would recommend it very highly to anyone interested in the field.

Insufficient historical reflection.

JansenÕs book is 232 pages long, with footnotes, bibliography and index accounting for almost 38% of the book; actual narrative occupying only 62% (146 pages) of the total space. The book was written primarily with an academic audience in mind and the author has researched thoroughly; tracing information through a variety of primary source documents. The structure is simple and straightforward, with a brief introduction, followed by eight chapters dealing with case studies on four women (two chapters each), and a short conclusion. The style hovers somewhere between a novel and a documentary and remains a relatively easy read. As to purpose, Jansen herself comments:
As I began to collect these stories, I realized that I approached the task with a number of assumptions about what I would find. As my investigations slowly progressed, I found that every one of my assumptions was challenged by what I discovered.
The whole book emerges as a personal quest to restore women from the footnotes back into the main narrative of history and the resultant realization of her false personal assumptions being overturned. The title of the book gave pledge for the promise of exciting insights to come, but despite the overwhelming presentation of literary evidence, it amounted to very little by way of historical reflection and proved a deeply unsatisfying book that served only to highlight the problem of crossing over the disciplines and assuming that her own assumptions are representative of those in the discipline being entered. Jansen gives the impression that this book is an historical supplement to the wealth of current Tudor history works, but it adds very little to our understanding of women in Tudor times. HarrisÕs essay on the political influence of early Tudor women reveals JansenÕs work to be somewhat underinformed and disingenuous, despite her assiduity.
