The right to choose when to die is a deeply divisive issue around the world, and is especially so in the United States, thanks in part to Kevorkian and other activists. In Freedom to Die, Derek Humphry and Mary Clement describe the history of the right-to-die movement and explain all sides of the debate. Humphry has been an advocate of physician-assisted suicide ever since his wife died slowly and painfully of cancer in the mid-1970s. Humphry founded the Hemlock Society, one of the first advocacy organizations on this issue, and has written several other books on the subject.

The authors describe how technological advances, changes in the doctor-patient relationship, poor end-of-life care, and the civil-rights movement prompted the development of the right-to-die movement. Humphry and Clement are very critical of doctors' determination to keep a patient alive even after the patient's quality of life has become unbearably low: To rely so heavily on technology and biological functions to define the states of life and death is to deny the very social, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life that give it meaning. In their zeal to fashion new and improved technologies, many doctors have promoted measures that are inappropriate and whose applications often have horrendous consequences. After outlining the history of the movement and the arguments of those on all sides of the issue, Humphry and Clement explain the 1997 Oregon Death with Dignity Act and other recent legislation. In 1991, Humphry, founder of the Hemlock Society, published his best-selling Final Exit (Hemlock Society), fueling the national debate over physician-assisted suicide. Now, he and lawyer Clement provide a history of the right-to-die debate. As reasons for increased public sympathy for assisted suicide, they cite advances in medical technology coupled with increases in costs, the failure to address chronic pain control, AIDS, and the rights culture that first appeared in the 1960s. The authors then trace the issue's history from Karen Ann Quinlan in 1979 through the appearance of Dr. Jack Kevorkian in 1990 to the Oregon initiative from 1994 through 1997. Discussion of the religious, medical, and political opposition also appears, along with coverage of Dutch assisted-suicide laws, the status of state-assisted suicide laws, and a chronology. Though obviously favoring the right to die, the authors present their opinions in a clear, low-key manner. All individuals interested in this question should read this work; highly recommended for public and academic libraries.

Effective advocacy journalism offered in defense of physician-assisted suicide (PAS). The authors maintain that PAS is an idea whose time has come. Humphry, founder of the Hemlock Society, has written numerous works, including Final Exit, 1991; Clements an attorney for right-to-die cases. They define PAS as the consequence of a dying patients request for self-administered lethal drugs obtained from a doctor. As their book argues, social and technological changes have made the public relatively receptive to the practice. Technology, after all, can postpone death perhaps indefinitelybut often at the cost of leaving a patient in extreme mental and physical pain, or even in a ``vegetable'' state. Emerging from the rights culture of the 1960s, patients have increasingly demanded the freedom to choose the nature of their death in the face of this dehumanizing technological alternative. Poor end-of-life care, such as pain management, by physicians has also given impetus to the PAS movement. The authors discuss these issues with great care. They offer a history of the movement, particularly the recent legal and legislative struggles over PAS. They also discuss the powerful organized social forces opposed to PAS. This is, in short, an exhaustive study, useful regardless of whether one supports or loathes PAS. Flaws, however, do weaken the authors case. They insist that 70 percent of Americans support PAS, yet base this number on a single (!) poll. They dismiss hostility to PAS as due merely to a benighted establishment; this conclusion is unlikely to win sympathy from anyone with genuine moral qualms concerning PAS. Finally, while their critique of end-of-life care is devastating, they dodge the idea that perhaps we should put more of our energies into reform of such care, rather than into the effort to legalize PAS. "Right-to-die": killing disabled people for economic reasons

Chapter 21 of this book, titled "The Unspoken Argument," advocates the economic benefits of euthanasia, as follows: "Similar to other social issues, the right-to-die movement has not arisen separate and distinct from other concurrent developments of our time. In attempting to answer the question Why Now?, one must look at the realities of the increasing cost of health care in an aging society, because in the final analysis, economics, not the quest for broadened individual liberties or increased autonomy, will drive assisted suicide to the plateau of acceptable practice."
Derek Humphry and other right-to-die leaders, time after time, have demonstrated the same willingness to promote this final "solution" to the problems of people with disabilities. Taken together, these words and deeds mark a clear and consistent pattern - one that includes promotion of euthanasia and extermination of people with disabilities.
Nevertheless, leaders of the pro-euthanasia movement still often falsely claim that their concerns are only for those with terminal illness. Their messages are tailored to specific audiences and vary greatly depending on the immediate political climate. The Hemlock Society, its leaders and its allies, need to come forward, to clearly state their complete agenda and open it to honest debate.

The Right To Die

Great book. Our society makes it a "sin" to help terminally ill people end their lives without further pain. Thats the sin! When you're well, a book such as this might seem ridiculous but when you're walking in death's shoes from a painful, degenerating disease, its complete inhumane torture to allow the patient to suffer past his/her wishes.

No single individual is more central to the right-to-die movement
than Derek Humphry, who founded the Hemlock Society in 1980
and who has written several book on the subject.
(In 2003 the Hemlock Society renamed itself End-of-Life Choices.
And in 2004 it merged with Compassion in Dying,
taking the new name Compassion & Choices.)
This book is a summary of the history
of the right-to-die movement up to 1998.
The right-to-die emerged in response to modern medical technology,
which can keep bodies 'alive' longer than ever before imagined.
Humphry and Clement summarize the most famous right-to-die cases:
Quinlan, Cruzan, Kevorkian, Quill.
They summarize the then-current policies in the Netherlands,
which allow a physician to assist a patient to die
when specified safeguards are fulfilled.

Detailed accounts are given to the efforts to win the right-to-die
on the West coast of the United States: California, Washington, Oregon.
These states have referendum laws,
allowing the people to create laws directly by a popular vote
--when the elected lawmakers are too timid to enact a particular law.
One drawback of this means of changing the laws
is that the debates tend to be reduced to 30-second television ads.
Oregon was the first state to allow physicians to aid a voluntary death
--by prescribing lethal drugs after careful safeguards were fulfilled.

The US Supreme Court found no right-to-die in the Constitution,
but the justices left the door open for states to write new laws.

Humphry and Clement even include a chapter on
the high cost of medical care at the end of life,
--an argument for the right-to-die that is open to easy attack by opponents,
who will suggest that some people will be put to death to save money.
Voluntarily-created 'living wills' or Advance Directives for Medical Care
can accomplish the same goal, but few people have written them.
And sometimes doctors do not know about 'living wills' or ignore them.

This book is an excellent place to begin reading
about the right-to-die movement.
It is based on Derek Humphry's personal experiences and all published sources.

Imagine a writer who combines the stylistic complexities of Gene Wolfe with the sexual perversity of Poppy Z. Brite. Add a dash of cyberpunk and a double measure of the paranoia that fueled Philip K. Dick's best work. This might give you some dark presentiment of what Calder's fiction is like, but your imagination would probably fall well short of the mark. In his newest novel (after Dead Things), Calder imagines a future when virtual reality and the Net have created an alternate universe of artificial intelligences, many of whom have been downloaded into corporeal form. Much of the world's population, both human and virtual, has become obsessed with pornography and sado-masochism, and Earth's repressive governments have concluded that children are at the demonic center of the sexual madness that has overtaken the planet. As the novel opens, one downloaded AI, Dahlia Chan, former star of such pornographic and pedophiliac adventure films as Kung-Fu Nymphet from Hell, and Zane, her most obsessive (and sexually obsessed) fan, flee across the wastes of Antarctica in search of Cythera, a perhaps mythical Eden where humans and AIs can live as equals. In succeeding chapters, a variety of characters, many of them alternate-universe versions of Dahlia and Zane, most of them sexually perverse, undergo a variety of adventures, assignations, revolutions and tortures, all part of their grand and extremely convoluted quest for Cythera. Calder is a writer of undeniable talent, but it's hard to envision his intended audience. Perhaps he's writing for aficionados of both the Marquis de Sade and William Gibson or, conceivably, for those who prefer their Philip K. Dick mixed with a little J.K. Huymans. In any case, he's definitely an acquired taste.

Calder's techno-poetry is lyrical, haunting and masterful

Richard Calder's DEAD GIRLS breaks new ground in a once-innovative literary movement that has unfortunately become stagnant in recent years. All of you cyberpunk fans are familiar with William Gibson's NEUROMANCER, and although we all owe the inventor of cyberspace a debt of gratitude, it is obvious that Gibson's brilliant novel spawned a slew of imitators seeking to capitalize on the popularity of hard-edged futuristic prose. Calder is different. This is not prose at all, this is high-voltage poetry; this is rampant, blood thumping word art. I couldn't stop reading. Don't bother trying to dissect the proposed technology in DEAD GIRLS, or waste energy researching the occasional windy vocabulary word, just absorb the ambience. Grant Calder his post/retro-apocalyptic-adolescent-vampire premise. Somehow he makes it work. Just be happy he let you tag along for the ride.

"Dead Girls Dead Boys Dead Things" is a profound book for those with the patience, vocabulary and literary mastership to undertake it. It is not for the weak of heart; it has both graphic sexual and violent content, however they are presented in an artful (if not at all times tasteful) way. Although the plot may be difficult to follow if you're not devoted to the story, it is well worth it if you have the patience to overcome the somewhat obscure vocabulary used in the book; however, I feel that Calder's lyrical form of narration and description, founded upon his obscure but far-reaching vocabulary are one of the book's most endearing qualities. Anyone who wants a good challange, who enjoys sci-fi or who likes books which take unexpected twists and turns, finally concluding in an unforseen ending will enjoy this book immensly.

These books are a obssesive read, once in you have to finish. Calder's world sucks you in, just as the Meta girls, boys and things suck life out of each other. Don't try to conciously keep details in mind, rather let them swirl and mingle until you can smell a Doll or see a Elohim out of the corner of your eyes. Read best at night, not for the easily moralistic or the quickly offended. I like all three as they don't seem to try so hard to be sci-fi or cyber-sexy, they just are.

Beyond their recipes, what can cookbooks tell us? Much, says Janet Theophano, whose Eat My Words explores women's history as revealed by the cookbooks they wrote, used, or in many cases created, and through recipes, family and historical memorabilia, and other clippings. Beginning in the 17th century and bringing us to the present, Theophano examines cookbooks as repositories of female identity. Whether focusing on early English estate housekeeping books, which served as both cookbooks and primers for self-education; a 19th-century cookbook whose list of servants' tasks reveals aspects of female domestic life; or 20th-century works like Freda DeKnight's classic 1948 A Date with a Dish, which limns black female culture, the book, at its best, fulfills the promise of its exciting premise. But Theophano is hampered by her choice of materials. Though works like the above do tell about women's lives, others, like that of an early 20th-century Pennsylvania housewife, yield little of consequence no matter how dexterously Theophano squeezes them for meaning. This leads her into a speculative freefall and from there to overgeneralized (and often redundant) conclusions. ("Mrs. Downing gave a lot of thought to the delectable and proper meals she would serve her guests" is one of many examples.) Theophano, a folklorist teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, attempts to show that cookbooks can "dramatically expand and enrich our understanding of women's lives." Her discussion covers a select group of English and American cookbooks from the 17th century to the mid-20th, including many she found in antiquarian book shops and archives. Some of them do say a lot about women and their worlds for example, a 17th-century English receipt book where the writer lists all her worldly possessions, or the 19th-century recipe book containing lists of servants' tasks. In A Date with a Dish, published in 1948, the cooking editor of Ebony magazine pays homage to her cultural heritage. In Memory's Kitchen, written by Jewish women interned in Theresienstadt during the Holocaust and published in 1996, contains Central European recipes that represent a "lost world and its flavors." A number of cookbooks are included because their owners used them as scrapbooks, annotating the recipes and placing newspaper clippings, favorite poems, biblical verses and handwritten notes between the leaves, but here Theophano can only speculate, for the information about the cooks is often very limited and not particularly revealing of their social and cultural worlds. While the book is painstakingly researched, with copious footnotes and an extensive bibliography, its title promises more than it delivers.

Theophano (folklore and religious studies, Univ. of Pennsylvania) here examines British and American cookbooks written from the 17th to the mid-20th centuries. While she is careful not to read too much into the historical context of these cookbooks or in the marginal notes she found in them, Theophano suggests a number of themes. For instance, the collecting of recipes helped maintain a sense of community and helped preserve a religious or ethnic group's history. Some cookbooks revealed the lives of the women who wrote them through the notes, poetry, or letters found inside. Cookbooks encouraged female literacy and authorship and offered social instruction in household management. Still others contained social and political commentary. This work is not a comprehensive history of cookbooks but rather a charming series of observations on women authors and users and the times in which they lived. A Scholarly Read

I picked up this book off the shelf because I am very interested in cooking and collect cookbooks. It wasn't light reading, but was very interesting. Like the women the author discusses I too collect recipes from family, friends and other sources to make a cookbook of my own. Mine is in 3 separate binders, a modern equivelant to those that women have been making for hundreds of years. The discussions of women, food and the preparation of it were interesting. I was motivated to weed out my own cookbooks and reorganize my own recipes to better represent who I am and how my family eats. It is a legacy of my own to hand down to my own children. A scrapbook of our eating habits.

Eat My Words isn't just a recipe collection; nor is it a survey of cookbook history: it reads between the lines of recipes through the ages to consider the women who developed them, from 17th century English estate housekeeping books to primers which encouraged women to educate themselves. Eat My Words is very highly recommended as an excellent blend of culinary history and biography.

In "Eat My Words: Reading Women's Lives Through the Cookbooks They Wrote" folklorist Janet Theophano attempts to reconstruct the lives of underrepresented women through contextual interpretation and supposition based upon the contents of their cookbooks. Though her discourse to this end becomes increasingly strained throughout the book's progression, Theophano ultimately proves that historical cookbooks' greatest value derives not from the culinary information they possess, but from the windows they open into the lives of the women who made them. Cookbooks, she shows, are records of their creators' lives and comprise miniature archival collections unto themselves. A single cookbook can document multiple generation's viewpoints, experiences and socioeconomic situations for individuals, families and society at large. However, Theophano's approach is at worst fallacious and at best quixotic. It relies highly on conjecture, supposing that the items found in these cookbooks were directly related to their creators' lives and not just items of esoteric value. Accuracy aside, "Eat My Words" still demonstrates how even the most innocuous of records can hold far more value than its obvious nature would belie.

Excelente libro, como acostumbra MacArthur, una exposición Biblica solida que reta en este caso el evangelismo que es presentado desde el pulpito de la mayoría de las iglesias "evanagelicas", contrasta con la manera en que nuestro Señor llevo su evangelio, requiere negarnos a nosotros mismos, el alto precio de seguir a Jesus, que bueno que es por su gracia y el nuevo corazón que pone en nosotros el querer como el hacer.

El libro discute y expone varias parabolas del Señor, así como varios momentos como el encuentro con Nicodemo, la mujer Samaritana. Además tiene un excelente apendice del Evangelio Según los Apostoles, demostrando la perfecta unidad del evangelio y la Palabra de Dios. Y por último incluye un apendice de citas y apoyo historico de como veian el evangelio hombres de Dios como Lutero, Warfield, Tozer, y muchos otros. No todo el que me diga Señor, Señor entrará al Reino de los Cielos, quieres saber quienes, como conocerle, que cuesta? QUe el Señor en su gracia y misericordia use este libro para su Gloria.

For the uninitiated, his statements may sometimes appear accusatory, but he supports most claims with material from current sources. The appendix, containing a list of food combinations that provide high levels of usable protein, is likely to be this book's single most valuable contribution. Unfortunately, many of the recipes will be inaccessible to American cooks who are uncomfortable converting ounces to cups and tablespoons. A Valuable Resource If You Are Considering Vegetarianism!

Is anyone a vegetarian besides Gary Null? Yep, there are a surprising number of famous folks who shun meat:

* Bob Dylan and Gladys Knight

* Chubby Checker (who's slimmed down since becoming a vegetarian)

* Henry David Thoreau and Charles Darwin

* And many, many others

Null explains the myths about meat consumption and explains: Getting enough protein vs. getting too much protein.

Next, he discusses the 6 main reasons to folks turn vegetarian: economics, excess use of natural resources, food resources, personal taste, religious beliefs and a reverence for life.

I never understood the `macrobiotic diet' but do now; Null explains it very well. Macrobiotic means long life; the adherents believe in living in harmony with nature. Since 60% of this diet is grain-based, Null encourages folks to try many grains, not just rice (which becomes dull).

There are almost 50 pages of recipes to show the variety one can enjoy on this diet. Finally, Null provides a "protein combination list" so that you receive complete proteins (32 pages of combos).

Null covers the basics very well, I just find his style of writing (and speaking) rather bland, however.

Doctors recommend a vegetarian diet for the following conditions: obesity, hypoglycemia, digestive disorders including diverticulitis, gout, colon problems and high cholesterol.

Gary Michael Null (born 1945) is an American talk radio host and author on alternative and complementary medicine and nutrition; his other books include Get Healthy Now!: A Complete Guide to Prevention, Treatment, and Healthy Living, The Complete Encyclopedia of Natural Healing, Death by Medicine, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1987 book, "this book presents what I consider to be a revolutionary advance in vegetarianism: the calculating power of the computer has been applied to the task of finding many new high-protein food combinations from vegetable sources, and dozens of brand-new recipies have been created based on these discoveries. This book was written with several audiences in mind. Dieters, vegetarians, people with food allergies or who are suspected of having them, health professionals, researchers, and reporters have been asking me for years how to find the ideal diet. Each of these groups will, I hope, find special value for themselves in this book." (Pg. ix)

He explains that "I learned that I was allergic to many of the high-protein staples of my vegetarian regimen---including eggs, milk, wheat germ, and brewer's yeast. These were foods I was eating every day! No wonder I often felt weak and tired as a runner, and couldn't improve my pace no matter how hard I trained." (Pg. xi)

He suggests, "The New York Times... suggests one such alternative: a diet centered around grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables but which is flexible and relatively easy to follow in that it includes some dairy products, chicken and fish... I feel that being a vegetarian is a whole way of being, that includes harmony with one's environment, cooperation, and flexibility. These factors were often lacking in vegetarians who believed that their dogma was more important than their way of being. This is why I welcome the new 'vegetarianism' heralded in the New York Times." (Pg. 39)

He advocates the "Protein Combination Project": "In this project I ... with the help of a computer and a very knowledgeable programmer, began to match various combinations of two or three foods..." (Pg. 39-40) He later elaborates, "Combinations of food types have been scientifically analyzed such that several specific foods, when combined in one meal, will satisfy the requirements of providing all essential amino acids... it should set a new standard for protein combining. The Protein Project enables knowledgeable vegetarians to save money, save their health, and get what they need." (Pg. 57)

Null's book will be of great interest to his fans, to vegetarians, and to vegans (he says, "Nowhere is reverence for life expressed more profoundly than in the philosophy of the vegan"; pg. 120).
