Good book for managing pain

I bought this book hoping it would help with my delivery. It had some good tips on managing labor pain. However, the more I read, the more I felt that to use the tips, you have to have a good labor coach that believes in hypnosis as much as you do. My husband is a skeptic, so it was hard for me to use the tips, knowing that he didn't really "buy into" hypnosis. I used some of the tips for the first part of my labor but did not use any of them during hard labor. I would suggest this book to anyone interested, with the above caveat.

Wonderful book!

I highly recommend this book!! I researched many books and techniques and the ones that I learned in this book worked the best for me. It allowed me to have a natural childbirth, without drugs, of a 9lb, 5oz baby! I will admit that the labor was not "pain-free", but it was certainly very manageable. I have experienced much greater pain from back problems. The book is written in an easy to follow manner, with many excellent scripts to read during delivery. I especially liked the section that tests to see if you are a good candidate for hypnosis as well as identifying which techniques will work best for you. Great Great resource!!!

pain free labor

I bought this for my daughter. She found it interesting & was able to use one thing from it for sure. Finding her "happy place" when in labor helped her get through some of the pain.

She ended up giving birth with not one single drug!

This first full-length bio of country/pop chanteuse k. d. lang suggests that its subject is noteworthy both for her courage as a self-proclaimed lesbian and for her refusal to submit to industry control of her image or her music. The first claim is undoubtedly true; Starr, a freeelance journalist and radio-program producer, convincingly asserts that lang's status as the "first openly lesbian pop icon" paved the way for other celebrities to "out" themselves without stigma. But the latter assertion is arguable. If lang has successfully resisted record-label attempts to market her music according to notions of commercial viability, Starr's portrait reveals that lang has always carefully packaged herself. Attracted to the spotlight, she would appear to have embarked on her career less because of a true passion for music than out of a desire for fame. She does emerge, however, as an inspiring example of a performer who has retained control of her career despite pressures to conform. Starr's detailed bio is frustratingly impersonal, providing little sense of lang as an individual. But her account of the politics of sexual orientation, especially in the spotlight, is absorbing. Somehow, despite all the facts Starr shares with us about everything from lang's Canadian country childhood to her current downtime retreats to the Canadian farm she shares with her lesbian sister, the woman herself--Keltie-Kathryn Dawn Lang--remains an enigma. Well-researched Portrait of a Ground-breaking Entertainer

Before Ellen DeGeneres, there was kd lang and Melissa Etheridge who were the most famous "Out" entertainers. This is the only comprehensive biography of kd lang to date. It was published 10 years ago, so it is not current, but it is an excellent, detailed biography, nonetheless. Starr traces Lang's history starting with her childhood, her teenage years, and her struggle to break into the music business. Talented but strongly individualistic and proudly Out, it is not surprising "the Old Boy's Network" in Nashville boycotted lang and her "country punk" music, even though she had great songs, a tremendous voice and a huge fan base. Of course, kd did nothing to endear herself to the country radio DJ's or to the powers-that-be, which is unfortunate.

However, people in the industry thought highly enough of her talent to colloborate with her on albums (most notable is Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's producer), resulting in powerful and memorable music.

The author presents a well-rounded portrait of kd, noting her flaws and mistakes as well as her triumphs. She writes objectively and clearly about her subject, without going into supermarket, tabloid trashiness that often accompanies biographies about controversial entertainment figures. If you're expecting to find steamy gossip about lang's personal life, thankfully you won't find it here.

It is an articulate and interesting read, but in dire need of an update. Still, it is one of the best lang biographies and I highly recommend it.

A Good Recap of Lang up to its Publication in 1994

What a voice! From the cold winters of a small town called Consort in Alberta, Canada came Kathy Lang. While many pooh-poohed the tall mannish woman from the plains, she always knew she would be a star. This book, published in 1994 tells of her career to that date.

Her early stage performances sound downright goofy, but with that terrific voice and a lot of heart they must have been amazing. Author Victoria Starr takes you through her times playing small venues with friends to ever larger gigs. You learn about her animal rights advocacy and how participating in the “Meat Stinks” campaign that created a backlash and hurt her family living in the heart of Canada’s cattle industry. You also learn of her worship of Patsy Cline and her attempts of follow her footsteps in Nashville.

After her Nashville country “period” she was freed to be more creative in music and other formats. There was an experimental film, “Salmonberries” where director Percy Adlon, grafted the narration onto her personality. After this film, or perhaps from it, came the album “Ingenue”, which brought her wide recognition.

Through Lang’s experience you get insight into the music industry. Despite solid record sales, sell out performances and big named recording interests in her voice, top 40 radio stations would not play her songs. Even today, some stations are said to limit female artists to 15% of the airtime. In the 1990’s it was most likely worse, especially for someone whose image did not fit the mold.

The last chapters deal with the aftermath of fame. Her “coming out” (she was always “out” to her family and friends) comes with interesting back stories about how interviews are set up and how “The Advocate” interview was neither wanted or advised by her promoters.

The last chapter implies a retired k.d., describing her life in California and her farm in Canada more than any artistic endeavors. I checked the internet and since 1994, while not as active as before, k.d. has been steadily recording and acting. I also checked for an updated biography. While there were a few other publications in the 1990’s there is nothing since, suggesting this would be a good time for a follow up.

The book begins calling Lang “Kathy” and as she changes her signature to “k.d.” (in deference to e.e. cummings), the text changes too. (Her band, the “reclines” (note Patsy Cline imagery) was similarly lower case.) The black and white photos are OK. The index had what I was looking for.

A small-town police chief basking in a "real case," a vengeful ex-wife, a fledgling psychologist who tailors her patients' responses to fit her self-serving preconceptions, a District Attorney facing re-election -- all of these and more push Barrow deeper and deeper into the depths, until everything he has is taken from him, his freedom, his belongings, and most particularly his beloved daughter.

Irreparable Damage is a horror story. Not a horror story of monsters from the deep or roving homicidal psychopaths, but something much worse, something that batters at the readers' defenses. As anyone familiar with Klempner's previous books will know, he is a writer with the talent to bring his story home to his readers. The first third of this psychological thriller reads like a subpar true-crime book it is, in fact, based on actual events but eventually Klempner (Flat Lake in Winter) unspools a mind-bending tale of frustration, injustice and false accusation that is chillingly plausible. One night, during his six-year-old daughter Penny's bath, single dad Stephen Barrow snaps a few photos of his giggling child. Just as he takes the last shot, Penny playfully turns around and bends over. Barrow drops the film off for developing, but when the processor sees the final picture, she becomes outraged and calls 911. This sets in motion a nightmare series of events that strips Barrow not only of Penny and his freedom, but of his dignity, identity and even his sense of the true nature of his relationship with his precocious daughter. Aided by scruffy, smalltown attorney Flynt Adams and eventual love interest Theresa Mulholland, a crusading reporter, Barrow learns that in such cases the accused is guilty until proven innocent. Even worse, an underhanded DA, a therapist (who is a paid consultant for the prosecution) and Penny's bitter mother are all coaching Penny to lie. Although marred by amateurish writing Klempner never met a cliche he didn't like, and he provides full backgrounds for even the most minor characters the book struggles out of its pedestrian opening chapters and develops tension and suspense as circumstance, coincidence and ineptitude conspire to prevent justice from being served. The surprise ending is straight out of The Bonfire of the Vanities, but gratifying nonetheless.

The father is arrested; his daughter is taken away from him. Add an ex-wife who will do anything to get her daughter back, some overzealous law-enforcement officials, and a lot of people who jump to unwarranted conclusions, and you could have a real ratings grabber. Thankfully, what we have instead is a thoughtful, intelligent drama, with characters who are three-dimensional and sympathetic. Readers will appreciate Klempner's delicate touch, his sensitive handling of this potentially controversial subject. Quite impressive. David Pitt

Page-turning tale - but unclear fiction/nonfiction boundary

Irreparable Damage delivers as it promises a harrowing tale of a man being accused of sexual abuse, all stemming from some spontaneous photographs he innocently took of his precocious 6-year old daughter after her bath. The author does a fine job presenting the downward spiral in this poor man's life and he is painted quite sympathetically, where the reader cannot help but root strongly for justice on his behalf. My major complaint with this book is also what drew me to it - that it is "based on an actual case." It is billed as a novel and yet in the "author's note," he states that he took the liberty of changing names and locations and modifying some of the less important details of the story. As he says, "but it happened, it really did. As the old saying goes, you just can't make up stuff like this." The problem is that the story has such dramatic, Hollywood movie features in it, including a quite satisfying but implausible courtroom ending that one can't help but wonder what has been embellished to maximize its intensity. It doesn't help that the book jacket describes the crucial photograph-taking scene (with the daughter saying "Take this one") differently than actually occurs in the book. From the author's comments at the end of the last chapter, it is clear that this criminal defense attorney/author is strongly advocating for people's eyes to be opened about the potential for well-intentioned abuse when pursuing abuse, but his case would have been made that much stronger if he were able to present this book in a non-fiction format. As the author acknowledges at the end, he would love to "see something of mine climb off the printed page and onto the screen" and one can't help but wonder what dramatic flairs were added to enhance this possibility.

Women of Faith Study Bible offers a feminine perspective on an age-old text. In numerous places, the editors insert interpretations that celebrate and elevate women's status in the Bible. "Some have said that in times when men are spiritually weak God uses women instead," the editors write in the Book of Samuel. "It is probably more accurate to say the deeds and faith of women are simply more apparent in those times. For the Lord gives gifts and callings to all people."

In the opening pages readers will find a "Weekly Studies Index" that references the Old and New Testaments with metaphorical themes such as "Uncharted Waters," "Are You a Bush or a Tree?" and "Jars of Clay." It also offers almost 80 full-page "Character Sketches" that profile women from the Bible, such as "Eve, Mother of Discontent," "Jezebel--Bent on Evil," and "Noah's Wife: Along for the Ride or a Partner in Adventure?" (The latter sketch tries to imagine the thoughts and actions of this almost invisible wife: "Perhaps she resented all the extra work Noah's obsession caused.") Other features include a timeline of women in the Bible, a genealogy of Jesus, and a dictionary of biblical terms.

It's got everything I wanted in a Bible...

I'm always fascinated by studies of Biblical women, so this Bible has been good with its little "snapshots" of interesting women in the Bible. There are study notes on each page which, for the most part, you've probably already heard somewhere else, but now and again they surprise you. There's cross-references and tons of space in the margin to scribble your own thoughts down. (That's one of the best parts!). The weekly studies are well-written and thought-provoking, but even though they are "weekly" studies they are not structured like that.

In this wildly uneven tome, veteran barbecue fiend Lampe, aka Dr. BBQ (Barbecue All Year Long, Big-Time Barbecue) crosses the country to explore local variations in low-and-slow cooking. Divided by region (Kansas City, Texas, the East, etc), Lampe offers reviews of and recipes for local specialties like Smoked Bologna and Barbecue Spaghetti, both from Memphis, as well as a Wisconsin cream soda-based barbecue sauce and Massachusetts Franken-Chicken. These culinary curiosities carry the book, along with anecdotes that provide tips and dispel myths (like common notions about sauceless 'que in Texas). Though more scrapbook than guide, there are enough recipes for dry rubs and sauces to get most barbecuers through a season. Other dishes, however, vary in their appeal; North Carolina Cheesy Cabbage is a gag-inducing smoked concoction of cheese, sausage, cabbage and half a squeeze bottle of Parkay margarine; Lampe's own Alamo Pie, a cross between a quesadilla and a s'more, makes one pause. Still, Lampe's method of smoking two pork butts simultaneously is a winner, and there is more than enough variation in these pages to stave off boredom. Though far from definitive, this book serves up regional quirks and curiosities will appeal to BBQ completists and culinary historians.

Really good book

I was expecting a book mainly about a trip around to restuarants but it turned out to be much more.

Somehow Dr. BBQ managed to put out a book with four topics running together and at the same time! There is the cookbook portion, stories about regional bbq cuisine all intertwined with explainations of the barbecue competition circuits.

The recipies are for everything in the BBQ world, rubs, sauces, meats, beverages, side dishes, and desserts.

This is not a tour of every restaurant in each area but a
he hits the major ones and then hits a couple no one has heard of.

The book starts out with his tour of Kansas City. There is 16 topics in the Kansas City section, including the American Royal and KCBS itself. The restaurants each get a little write up.

Then he was off to North Carolina (because Kansas City and North Carolina are right next to each other, right?) He heads off with a friend to score each location. Oddly he does not score the KC locations.

Tennessee was next. Memphis in May is discussed as well as 'The Jack.'
Something else about the book sticks out in this section. He discusses the sterotypes of each style and tears it down if it isn't true. For example Putting slaw on a pork sandwich is considered a Carolina thing, however in Memphis you get slaw served on pork sandwiches. Locations are not scored again just discussed.

Now he heads off to Teaxas where he scores the locations again. It is done on a different scale as Carolina but scored none the less.

he then is off to the North Midwest, Illinois, Ohio, etc. and then to the South, the east, and even the west. No locations are rated but there is more the same - locations you may have heard from with some good recipes mixed in.

This would be a good book for any level of BBQer to pick up. A beginner could even start with it. Because of the diversity of the book it could become one of the handbooks of the BBQ world.

About the Author
In 1974, at age 35 Steven M. Johnson had a sideline business creating cartoons for publication in magazines. His satirical images on environmental issues were appearing each issue in The Sierra Club Bulletin, later renamed Sierra Magazine. An editor asked him to invent and draw 16 satirical images of future recreation vehicles and he produced more than 100 ideas before he decided to stop. Since then, his whimsical inventions have appeared in magazines newspapers and books in the U.S., Japan and Sweden. They are often seen online at sites that feature unusual ideas for products and inventions. His three books display his often odd, whimsical, plausible and at times prophetic ideas. His three careers have all touched on the subject of the future, first as an urban planner working on future city plans, second as a newspaper illustrator creating a weekly cartoon panel that showed his ideas for future products, and lastly in the R&D section of a Japanese auto maker working as a futurist working in a small department that studied future trends and scenarios.

The first section combines tested scientific research and accumulated folk wisdom to provide the health consumer with treatment suggestions for common ailments. Also included are possible causes and symptoms for selected conditions, as well as contact information for product manufacturers. The second section lists the 50 most commonly used herbs, including their ingredients and information on usage, dose, adverse effects, and drug interactions. By combining herbal and folk remedies, clearly highlighting dangerous herb-drug interactions, and summarizing consumer issues, the Graedons have created a consumer resource that is entertaining (favorite home remedies include coconut macaroons for diarrhea) and easy-to-use. However, more comprehensive medicinal herb reference resources include the Complete German Commission E Monographs (American Botanical Council, 1998) and the PDR for Herbal Medicines (LJ 3/1/99), among others. Still, this is recommended for smaller public library collections that don't own the other titles.

From a familiar, reliable source, a worthwhile addition to the spate of recent alternative medicine guides. The Graedons (The People's Pharmacy, 1976, etc.), newspaper columnists and radio-show hosts, are right up-to-date on what is known about herbal treatments; from interchanges with their devoted public, they also offer suggestions for help via popular folk remedies. They begin by listing 20 of their favorite home remedies, those ``we have either tried ourselves with good results or heard about repeatedly from readers . . . in some cases, there is scientific research to back up the folk wisdom. Included here are gin-soaked raisins for arthritis (take nine per day), and Archway Coconut Macaroon cookies for treatment of diarrhea (a remedy first suggested by a Crohn's-disease sufferer), as well as the more familiar ginger tea for colds and coffee for asthma attacks. The Graedons warn early and often of the possible dangers inherent in herb use, particularly in combination with prescription drugs. Some of the most dangerous herb-drug interactions they document: licorice and Lanoxin (the potassium- depleting properties of licorice can cause heart arhythmias); kava-kava and Xanax (both are sedating; together, they are dangerously so); and ginkgo and Coumadin (increased risk of hemorrhage). The authors also remind us that no one, inside the government or out, monitors herbal preparations. Even the claim of ``standardized'' extract means nothing (``standardized to what?'') when in many casesSt. John's Wort, for onethe active constituent substance hasn't been identified. That said, however, the Graedons do endorse herbs as appearing ``amazingly benign'' compared with prescription medications. The first part of their guide is an extensive listing of common ailments, from allergies to warts, with their best suggestions for relief. I came across some card of Inherit the Mirth at the bookstore at Princeton Seminary and some of those cards I have never forgotten. There are some very original and hilarious ideas from this talented man.
