This first full-length bio of country/pop chanteuse k. d. lang suggests that its subject is noteworthy both for her courage as a self-proclaimed lesbian and for her refusal to submit to industry control of her image or her music. The first claim is undoubtedly true; Starr, a freeelance journalist and radio-program producer, convincingly asserts that lang's status as the "first openly lesbian pop icon" paved the way for other celebrities to "out" themselves without stigma. But the latter assertion is arguable. If lang has successfully resisted record-label attempts to market her music according to notions of commercial viability, Starr's portrait reveals that lang has always carefully packaged herself. Attracted to the spotlight, she would appear to have embarked on her career less because of a true passion for music than out of a desire for fame. She does emerge, however, as an inspiring example of a performer who has retained control of her career despite pressures to conform. Starr's detailed bio is frustratingly impersonal, providing little sense of lang as an individual. But her account of the politics of sexual orientation, especially in the spotlight, is absorbing. Journalist Starr presents a laudatory, in-depth biography of Grammy Award-winning country/pop singer k.d. lang. With material culled from numerous interviews, the author begins with lang's childhood in Canada, which was punctuated by the sudden disappearance of her father. Starr continues with the singer's affection for Patsy Cline-style country music, her rise to prominence as a progressive country artist, and her subsequent redirection to pop balladry. Throughout, the journalist analyzes the impact of lang's gender, lesbianism, and animal rights activism on her career. Though sometimes exaggerating the stature of her subject, Starr offers a well-written, thoroughly researched look at lang and the social climate in which she has become popular. Recommended for enthusiasts of music and popular culture.

In just a few years, lang (who, like e. e. cummings, affects lowercase initials) jumped from country music obscurity to pop idol. Her androgynous stage appearance challenged the Dolly Parton stereotype of female country stars. Recently she has identified herself as an animal-rights activist and a lesbian, moved away from country to gender-bending pop, and become a countercultural icon and would-be movie star. Starr's biography is at times awestruck, at others gritty with details some might rather not know, such as lang's excursions into aromatherapy and her infrequent shampoos. Somehow, despite all the facts Starr shares with us about everything from lang's Canadian country childhood to her current downtime retreats to the Canadian farm she shares with her lesbian sister, the woman herself--Keltie-Kathryn Dawn Lang--remains an enigma. But her fans will be sure to make this a popular book, anyway. Marie Kuda

Well-researched Portrait of a Ground-breaking Entertainer

Before Ellen DeGeneres, there was kd lang and Melissa Etheridge who were the most famous "Out" entertainers. This is the only comprehensive biography of kd lang to date. It was published 10 years ago, so it is not current, but it is an excellent, detailed biography, nonetheless. Starr traces Lang's history starting with her childhood, her teenage years, and her struggle to break into the music business. Talented but strongly individualistic and proudly Out, it is not surprising "the Old Boy's Network" in Nashville boycotted lang and her "country punk" music, even though she had great songs, a tremendous voice and a huge fan base. Of course, kd did nothing to endear herself to the country radio DJ's or to the powers-that-be, which is unfortunate.
However, people in the industry thought highly enough of her talent to colloborate with her on albums (most notable is Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's producer), resulting in powerful and memorable music.
The author presents a well-rounded portrait of kd, noting her flaws and mistakes as well as her triumphs. She writes objectively and clearly about her subject, without going into supermarket, tabloid trashiness that often accompanies biographies about controversial entertainment figures. If you're expecting to find steamy gossip about lang's personal life, thankfully you won't find it here.
It is an articulate and interesting read, but in dire need of an update. Still, it is one of the best lang biographies and I highly recommend it.

A Good Recap of Lang up to its Publication in 1994

What a voice! From the cold winters of a small town called Consort in Alberta, Canada came Kathy Lang. While many pooh-poohed the tall mannish woman from the plains, she always knew she would be a star. This book, published in 1994 tells of her career to that date.
Her early stage performances sound downright goofy, but with that terrific voice and a lot of heart they must have been amazing. Author Victoria Starr takes you through her times playing small venues with friends to ever larger gigs. You learn about her animal rights advocacy and how participating in the “Meat Stinks” campaign that created a backlash and hurt her family living in the heart of Canada’s cattle industry. You also learn of her worship of Patsy Cline and her attempts of follow her footsteps in Nashville.
After her Nashville country “period” she was freed to be more creative in music and other formats. There was an experimental film, “Salmonberries” where director Percy Adlon, grafted the narration onto her personality. After this film, or perhaps from it, came the album “Ingenue”, which brought her wide recognition.
Through Lang’s experience you get insight into the music industry. Despite solid record sales, sell out performances and big named recording interests in her voice, top 40 radio stations would not play her songs. Even today, some stations are said to limit female artists to 15% of the airtime. In the 1990’s it was most likely worse, especially for someone whose image did not fit the mold.
The last chapters deal with the aftermath of fame. Her “coming out” (she was always “out” to her family and friends) comes with interesting back stories about how interviews are set up and how “The Advocate” interview was neither wanted or advised by her promoters.
The last chapter implies a retired k.d., describing her life in California and her farm in Canada more than any artistic endeavors. I checked the internet and since 1994, while not as active as before, k.d. has been steadily recording and acting. I also checked for an updated biography. While there were a few other publications in the 1990’s there is nothing since, suggesting this would be a good time for a follow up.
The book begins calling Lang “Kathy” and as she changes her signature to “k.d.” (in deference to e.e. cummings), the text changes too. (Her band, the “reclines” (note Patsy Cline imagery) was similarly lower case.) The black and white photos are OK. The index had what I was looking for.
