Eric's cousin Russell, paroled after seven years in prison, is hell-bent on retaking the Queens neighborhoods he once ran. Though Gray's not the sharpest stylist, he keeps the story moving, and as the narratives converge, he pours on the luridness. The characters are thin, but the atmosphere is frighteningly seductive. He was a bit confused by her question.River stepped closer to the car. She leaned into the passenger window and repeated, “I said, is you lookin’ for a date?””How much?” he asked. He was clad in his usual day-to-day business attire; white shirt, black tie, and cheap shoes, being the average-looking Joe. He had just gotten off from work, and wanted a quick blow job before he went home to his wife. He knew about the track in South Jamaica, Queens, and knew what went on there. It was no secret to the man in the Benz that this was where the action was. Where pussy was up for sale at a reasonable price.”You a cop?” River asked.”No. I’m just looking for some fun.””You want your dick sucked, that’s fifty,“ River told him, staring him down and waiting for an answer with her hands resting on the passenger door.The middle-aged accountant, who’d just put in three hours of overtime at his firm, couldn’t resist River’s beauty. A slimmer second man came into view, and he too gripped a 9-mm. Both men wore black ski masks.”Niggah, shut the fuck up and fork over that cash, muthafucka, before I blow a hole in your white ass!””My money’s in my wallet,“ Ronny fearfully explained.”Give it up, then, niggah!”He slowly tried to reach for his pants pocket, but his pants were down too far around his ankles.”I got that,“ River said, coming from around the passenger side, and pulling off his pants completely.Ronny didn’t fight. He let River reach for his pants, pulling them off and leaving him bare-assed. River extracted his wallet, another set of keys, and a small picture of his wife and kids.”You married, got kids and shit, and you out here trying to get your little dick sucked while your wife and kids wait at home for your trifling ass,“ River said.”Please, don’t kill me. He continued to hit his victim until his face was bloodred, and the man was nearly unconscious.”That’s enough!” River cried out as she looked on in shock.”Let that be a lesson to him. He needs to stay his white ass where he came from. Ain’t no need for this cracker to come around here and mess wit’ our women.”Ronny lay unconscious, sprawled out on the ground, with his dick still exposed. River still had his pants in her hands.”I think he’s dead, Red,“ River said, panic showing on her face.”Fuck that cracker! GREAT!!!! Drama, Sex, Betrayal, Lies, Murder.Love and more drama!!!

Eric S. Gray keeps getting better and better with each novel that he writes. I truly enjoyed this book "It's Like Candy" and am already looking forward to his next book.
The story is full of twists and turns. Starr and River are 2 sisters who are seperated when River leaves there home when she can't take the abuse from her drug addicted mother and the male perverts she is forced to have sex with. Starr soon leaves when she can't take the abuse and turns to prostitution.
River makes her money with her boys Big Red and Twinkie by setting up men with her sexy body and gorgeous looks, then her boys rob them for everything they've got. All is going well until River's vic Eric turns out to be a different breed than the others she has played. River and Eric develop feelings for each other, and when it is time to pull off the robbery River is hurt and unsure, but she's too caught up. and the crazy Red won't have River falling in love.
16 year old Starr is making her money by sleeping with men for cash. She is working for a dangerous Pimp named Rome. Even when she is beaten near death, which results in a lengthy hospital stay, she goes right back into the streets. Ms Henderson, a kind hearted nurse she met while in the hospital tries to steer her on the right path. Unfortunately all Starr knows is laying on her back and making that cash. But Starr soon realizes she wants out of this sick twisted game, will it be too late?
Meanwhile Eric's cousin Russell aka Yung Slim is fresh out of prison and ready to continue his criminal activities like ever before. Eric is in love and trying to get his life together and doesn't want any part of Yung Slim's "crew". But family supposedly means everything to Russell and he will not have his cousin turning his back on him.
I won't tell you what happens, read it for yourself you will not be dissapointed!!! I was very happy with the way this story ended!

ONCE AGAIN ERICK HAS DID HIS THING. THE BOOK HAD ME HOOK FROM START TO FINISH. YOU HAVE ERIC WHO IS A SMALL TIME HUSTLER AND THROWS THE PHATTEST PARTY ALIVE WHO THEN MEETS RIVER WHO IS A STICK UP CHICK THAT USES HER BODY TO LURE ME IN FOR HER BIG RED AND TWINKIE WHO ARE BAD COPS AND NO ONE KNOWS THIS. ERIC MEETS RIVER AND FALL HARD FOR HER EVEN THOUGH SHE SETS HIM UP. PEOPLE ARE OUT TO KILL HER SO SHE TURNS BACK TO THE ONE PERSON SHE TRULY FALLS HARD FOR WHICH IS ERIC.

I just finished reading this book and it was so good. I sat on this book forever. Starr and river were two sisters who endured so much and still found each other through it all. Russell was an evil man who didn't care about anyone, but himself and I think Eric did the right thing.This book is a must read.

Love love this book!!!

Someone gave this book to my husband as a gift and I love love this book. The verses are wonderful and categorized by subject relevant especially for men but that can also apply to anyone. At the end of each section, there is a short devotional essay on the topic. This is a wonderful book and I can't wait til I order the version for women and try it out too.

Eliot's striking memoir chronicles a childhood and adolescence spent within the luxurious confines of the University of Chicago Sonia Shankman Orthogenic school, then run by ‚migr‚ psychiatrist Bruno Bettelheim. In an era when most mental institutions were sterile and unforgiving, Bettelheim's school during Eliot's stint (1963-1976) boasted fine china, classic film screenings, open discussions of sexuality and an unlocked, fully stocked "candy closet" that the children were allowed to raid at will. It's also a place where, according to Eliot, Bettelheim ruled supreme, said nasty things to the kids and publicly slapped them. A concentration camp survivor, "Dr. B." (as both staff and patients called him) passionately believed that "if the Nazis could create an environment to destroy personality... he could build an environment that could foster and re-create personality"-orthogenic means "path to truth" in Greek. And the school's methods are stunningly unorthodox; upon his arrival, eight-year-old Stephen is given a stuffed lion--not, Bettelheim explains, so that he has something to love, but so that he'll have something to hit that can't hit him back. The children, of varying ages, are all there for different reasons; Stephen, a precocious child who could read before he was two, describes them as people with a certain "limp in life," and his own case as involving anxiety and castration fears and borderline schizophrenia. Unfortunately, the memoir shuttles back and forth in time too rapidly-each chapter, ostensibly about a different topic, moves confusingly through the 13 years of Eliot's treatment. A simple year-by-year structure would have made this memoir, which has a real story to tell (and which will inevitably be compared with Girl, Interrupted) more coherent.

In this unique story of recovery from childhood mental illness, Eliot lucidly recounts his 13 years at the Orthogenic School at the University of Chicago, when the controversial Bruno Bettelheim (1903-90) served as director. Born in Austria and interned in concentration camps, Bettelheim believed in long-term psychoanalytic treatment rather than the drug therapy and behavior modification programs prevalent today. Eliot, who now works as an investment banker in New York City, was sent to the school in 1963 at the age of eight. Just why is unclear, however: the author alludes to unhappiness, lack of friends, and some bizarre thoughts, but that does not seem to account for his diagnosis as a schizophrenic in a transitional phase. Eliot instead focuses on the details of daily life at the school, covering Bettelheim's foibles as well as his therapeutic genius and offering tales of relationships between students and counselors, visits home to an affluent environment, and his rich fantasy life as a troubled boy with gender identification problems. This coming-of-age story was first published in France and relies mostly on memories and case notes. Despite unanswered questions about the nature of the author's illness and treatment regimen, this intriguing and inspirational book is recommended for specialized collections serving mental health consumers and their advocates.

Interesting book

I read this book while living at the orthogenic school. To tell you the truth, I found it intriguing but I didn't really enjoy the style of writing.

For people who the the Orthogenic School was abusive- most place at the time would lock disturbed children in rooms and tie them to beds for weeks on end. Race theory was prevalent, as was insulin shock therapy. Autistic children were likely to be institutionalized for their lives in dark, cruel places. In this respect, the Orthogenic School was revolutionary- it attempted to do neither of these things and tried to treat children like human beings. Were there a lot of therories that are majorly messed up? Yes. Was Bettelhiem abusive? Probably. But I have trouble believing that the school wasn't better than the other alternatives of the time.

Stephen Eliot "Has something important to say."

I am responding not only to Eliot's book, but the reviewer who describes the Orthogenic School as an abusive and bogus institution. In the interst of full disclosure, my impressions of Elliot's work were influenced by my own experiences as an attorney representing disabled children and having a mother who worked at the Orthogenic School under Jacqui Sanders (Bettelheim's successor). In addition, I am friends with Dr. Sanders and several other people mentioned in Eliot's book.

My mother took great pains to keep our family separate from her work at the Orthogenic School. In fact, I never set foot in the School until I was an adult in my 30s and I was representing children placed there. My mother had me attend another Chicago- area private high school instead of U High, in part to avoid having contact with children from the O-School. However, it would have been impossible for my mother's parenting not to have been influenced by her work.
Like Eliot, I have my own issues with some of the use of psychoanalytic interpretations in the context of every day life as a means of helping children develop insight into ordinary actions or self-control. In the wrong hands or when motivated by a need to assert control, it is more a tool to demean than to provide insight. As Eliot described, Bettelheim was not immune from indulging his own foibles and prejudices. In addition, as Eliot's angry descriptions show, when attempted by less adept therapists/counselors/teachers the resulting psychic wounds are deep.
Despite these shortcomings, the institution Elliot describes was a far better place than what currently passes as treatment facilities for most children. Despite budgets of billions of dollars for state departments of children services, education, or mental health services, most institutions "treating" emotional disturbed/mentally ill children are nothing more than modern equivalents of Dickensian era Yorkshire boarding schools. Instead of treacle to control appetites and behaviors, children are dosed with medications often without regard to side effects or proper monitoring. Behavior modification programs are often designed and implemented without regard for children's actual developmental levels or dignity. Eliot's description of the power and importance of humane and psychologically minded treatment serve as an essential reminder that an alternative to mind-numbing punititive warehousing is possible.
No discussion of Bettelheim's legacy is complete without mention of two issues, physical punishment and the influence of those he trained. Jacqui Sanders in her book "A Greenhouse for the Mind" and a 12/03 letter to the editor of the "New York Review of Books" concerning a review of Eliot's book and Theron Raines' book on Bettelheim, does a far better job than I could of addressing these issues. I would suggest that anyone interested in a rational, insightful, and balanced assessment of this aspect of Bettelheim's work and the Orthogenic School's treatment of children, consult these two publications.
Despite my support for Eliot's work, I do take issue with his criticism of Jacqui Sanders and others for failing to expand on Bettelheim's work. Eliot is critical that many of those Bettelheim trained have focused their professional lives on clinical work instead of research and writing. Moreover, Eliot is critical of Jacqui Sanders' leadership for failing to expand the Orthogenic School's role as a research center.
Eliot's criticisms fail to consider the difficult political realites created by the Orthogenic School's identity within the University of Chicago and the professional limitations created by the gender discrimination the largely female staff Bettelheim trained undoubtedly faced. In addition, many of these women not only worked but raised children at the same time. Bettelheim, like many men of his generation, focused almost exclusively on his professional life. Furthermore, it most be remembered that the hard work, and largely uncredited clinical reports made by these women produced the raw material Bettelheim relied on in his books. Most importantly, Eliot's criticism is unfair when considered in light of the fact that Bettelheim's willingness to demand sacrifice from others enabled him to achieve what other more selfless individuals cannot. Although Bettelheim worked tremendous hours, the sacrifice of time and energy above-and-beyond any "normal" job made by counselors, cooks, therapists, teachers enabled Bettelheim to achieve what he did.
Most importantly, Sanders and others have trained and mentored hundreds of individuals. Many of these individuals, including Dr. Sanders and the wonderful Leslie described by Eliot, continue to mentor young professionals or to work with children and families. They do so in a professional climate far more hostile to psychoanalytic models of treatment than the one Bettelheim experienced. That legacy should not be diminished by unfair comparisons to Bettelheim.

It Could Have Been So Much Better......

This book could have been so much better.....It is a fascinating story of psychiatry/psychology/psychoanalysis in the middle 1900s, but this book involves one person, and one person only: the author, Stephen Eliot. Why is there nothing about his family members? One photo is characterized as being a picture of his late brother....What? How did he die? Was it integral to the story? It is as though Eliot existed (exists?) in a vacuum, and things just happened to him for no particular reason. Why was he sent to the School in the first place? Why? What did he do, or what happened to him to cause his parents to spend so much money and send their son off to strangers to raise him? It is an interesting tale of Bruno Bettelheim and his practices, but he is a shadow figure in this book. I hope another student, or teacher, from the School writes a book someday that will include more than just one simple focus. Yes, I know this is an autobiography, but the author's self-centerdness, world-revolves-around-me-only got old after the first couple of hundred pages.

Cyn's step sisters Lila and Ami host a VJ show for RTV. While they throw tantrums, endlessly complain and pout because they are spoiled, beautiful, rich girls, Cyn does everything else. As their personal assistant and gopher, she is the one who takes care of any crisis that arises no matter how trivial. Cyn promised her dad before he died that she would live with her sisters until she is twenty five, when she will finally come into her inheritance. Once that day comes she is free to go as she pleases but until then she is stuck with the she-devils.

While taking a rare and much needed break from the sisters, Cyn goes to her favorite Starbucks and meets Eric. Eric is a really handsome, nice guy. Their contact is brief but pleasing and Cyn hopes to see him there again. Not long after their first meeting Cyn meets Eric at the Starbucks again and they decide to walk to the park together. They are soon laughing and having a good time together. When Eric invites Cyn to dinner, she agrees but insists on meeting Eric at the restaurant. Cyn is afraid that Lila and Ami will take him away from her, if they meet him. Because of her step sisters though Cyn doesn't show up at their dinner date. Eric waits then leaves and because of his schedule he doesn't see Cyn again for a while until he spots her trying to hail a cab in the pouring rain.

Cyn has been praying to see Eric again but he hasn't been to the Starbucks and they didn't exchange phone numbers. Sharing the cab brings them right back to the easy banter they had that first day they met. They make dinner plans again for the following Friday night.

As their relationship gets warmer Eric realizes that Cyn is hiding things from him just as he is from her. He doesn't want her to know that he is the rich owner of AmerCon, not the regular guy she thinks he is.

Cyn doesn't want Eric to know her step sisters are the famous VJ's and that she works at RTV because she is afraid the girls will sabotage her relationship with Eric, like they always have in the past.

Things get sticky when Eric invites Cyn to the awards show hosted by RTV, which of course she is already attending. After all she put the whole show together. Cyn finds out that Eric is the owner of AmerCon , the company taking over RTV at a meeting and her sisters ruin everything. Between Lila and Ami and the misunderstandings between Eric and Cyn, things get messy. Just when it looks like they can work it out another step sister induced drama leaves Cyn feeling betrayed and hurt yet again. Will Eric be Cyn's prince charming or will Lila and Ami continue to make her life miserable?

I really hated Lila and Ami. I wanted to stick daggers in their eyes on several occasions. Poor Cyn is this amazing, intelligent and beautiful woman, but she allows herself to be treated like dirt and her step sisters make an art form out of being petty, jealous and spoiled. Although Cinderella Lopez is sexy, modern and fun to read, I prefer my heroines to have to endure less heartache. I think Eric handled several things poorly and he made some decisions that were hurtful to Cyn. Cinderella Lopez has many romantic and entertaining moments and the revenge is sweet but I would have loved to see the ending pack more of a punch for Cyn. Cinderella Lopez is a good story, well written for sure but, not the kind of romantic fairy tale I enjoy.

It was okay

I liked that this story incorporated some of the details from the Disney classic; however, she missed one iconic scene: the glass slipper scene. I mean, there was the handsome, Eric, the evil stepsisters, and the fairy godmother, who was disguised as two gay men. But where was the glass slipper?

There was a ballroom scene, where Cyn is dressed lavishly in a beautiful gown, but she didn't lose a slipper; Eric didn't find it; and he certainly didn't slip it on her foot at the very end. C'mon, that's my favorite part in Cinderella.

Overall, I liked that Berta resurrected a classic fairy tale story and added her own Spanish flavor and comedy spice.

My favorite scene was when Cyn first takes a walk with Eric to the park. They are sitting on the ground, and Cyn tags Eric and he begins chasing her all over the place. They were just like two kids playing--fun and innocent. And I think that's an intregal part of love--to have that connection and to never stop having fun.

"Cinderella Lopez" is a heartwarming story of love at first sight.
I do have to say that I liked "Lucky Chica" better though.

Fun Read, Nice Fairy Tale Revision

As the title notes, this is a Latina-revision of the classic 'Cinderella' story. It's based in NYC, the protagonists work at a music television channel, and there is some rags-to-riches love to be found towards the end.

What surprised me most about the novel is that the author didn't pepper the text with much Spanish or cultural references. Sure, she notes that the "prince" figure is Latino as well, but this is about it. Occasional Spanish words are used, but nothing with substance.

I'm thinking the author could have done something more revolutionary here as this is a simple, straight-forward read. Perhaps I am not doing the story justice, but my first impression was (while fun and enjoyable), a bit bland!

I like the feminist ending, however!

Rushby's interest in the ancient diamond trade was piqued after a chance meeting with a diamond smuggler in Ethiopia. Driven to unearth the history-drenched underbelly of the diamond trade, Rushby (Eating the Flowers of Paradise: A Journey Through the Drug Fields of Ethiopia and Yemen) treks across India in search of old gemstone mines and ancient accounts. Rushby isn't quite sure what he's looking for, but he narrows his focus to the fate of Koh-i-Noor, the world's largest diamond, from its origins circa 1000 B.C., when it was believed to be a gift from the Sun God, to its present home in the Tower of London. He seeks out unorthodox storytellers, be they miners, peasants, gem dealers, diplomats, gurus or Jesuit priests. Unfortunately, Rushby is limited to the stories told by those who speak English; he very eloquently describes the frustration of watching someone gesture and talk excitedly, only to receive a two-word translation from a jaded interpreter. However, Rushby's keen sense of humor and sharp eye more than compensate for this handicap. Here, Rushby (Eating the Flowers of Paradise) tours the subcontinent in order to trace the diamond's blood-splattered history. He visits diamond mines in Andhra Pradesh, Bombay and Gujarat, and Delhi and the Punjab; stops at roach-infested hotels; travels by bus and train; and gets robbed by diamond smugglers. Whether you agree with Rushby that the accursed diamond should not be returned to its lawful owners (India) is beside the point. This travelog--as spellbinding as any thriller--contains some brilliant portrayals of ex-princes, scholars, cranks, and other sundry characters whose hospitality Rushby enjoys. Highly recommended for public libraries.

Interesting and enjoyable travelogue of India

_Chasing the Mountain of Light_ by Kevin Rushby is an interesting and sometimes humorous travelogue about India, ostensibly about the author's efforts to track the origins and history of the Koh-i-Noor or Mountain of Light, one of the most famous diamonds in the world, from its origins in the mines of Golconda in southern India to centuries later and its presumably final resting place in the Tower of London. Though the diamond's history and lore was indeed chronicled, the book was really the story of one traveler's adventures and encounters throughout India. Journeying from Madras on the Coromandel Coast in southern India all the way north to Amritsar in the Punjab, near the Pakistani border, Rushby undertook an epic quest to find the origins of this stone and to relate its bloody history. He had to contend with reluctant, unfriendly, tight-lipped officials, shady sellers of black market diamonds in dangerous back alleys, eccentric but knowledgeable experts on diamond lore and Indian history, and thieves, alerted to Rushby's inquires about diamonds, thinking him not a writer but a man who actually possessed large quantities of these gems on his person.

The diamond known as Koh-i-Noor was believed by many devout Hindus to actually be mythic in origin, to be a stone that was once called the Syamantaka, a gem which the Hindu sun god Surya gave as reward to a worshipper. Later the god Krishna was accused by the people of stealing the gem and fought terrible battles to return the diamond back to humanity. The stone was owned by the Mughals for generations, beginning with the first Mughal emperor Babur in the 1520s, though many scholars dispute the notion that the Syamantaka and a magnificent stone known simply as "Babur's diamond" are the one and the same. The Persian invader Nadir Shah sacked Delhi in 1739, leaving the Mughals as vassals but along with many other treasures took the great diamond with him, giving it the name Koh-i-Noor (which means Mountain of Light). After Nadir Shah was assassinated in 1747 the Koh-i-Noor was taken by Ahmad Khan Abdali to Afghanistan. The last member of the Durrani dynasty (which was founded by Ahmad Khan Abdali), a ruler by the name of Shah Shuja, went into exile, the gem then taken by Ranjit Singh in 1813 (a man who founded a Sikh kingdom in the Punjab in 1799). During one of the Anglo-Sikh wars the Koh-i-Noor was captured by the British, who took the diamond to Queen Victoria, who in turn had the 186 carat diamond re-cut to improve its brilliance, bringing the stone down to a 108 carats (though strangely enough improving the diamond's allure, as the number 108 is a very auspicious number in India).

Many in India believe the stone is cursed and that the stone can only be given freely to another person by its owner or be won rightfully in battle; horrible things will result when the stone is bought, sold, or stolen. Further, they also believe that the stone will produce good fortune for good people but very bad things for the wicked.

Like many other great Indian diamonds, the Koh-i-Noor was always searching for a new master, "leaving behind the failed and the dead." Claimed by India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, the Sikhs in particular are keen to retrieve it as a symbol of Sikh nationalism (though they insist that like their famed Golden Temple, it would be the property of all Indians). Given its history and the immense prestige that would be gained by any in the subcontinent or the region who came into possession of the stone, Rushby wondered if the diamond was not best left in the Tower of London.

As fascinating as the Koh-i-Noor was, its history fills a fairly modest part of the book. More interesting perhaps was the numerous encounters Rushby had. He toured Fort St. George in Madras, the largest building left in the world constructed by the East India Company; never a favored post by Englishman, many sent there never returned, often committing suicide or drinking themselves to death. Also in Madras the author visited an Armenian church and met a Mr. Gregory, the last remaining Armenian, sole representative of a once thriving Armenian trading community. Rushby met with astrogemologists, men who believed that they could control fate by the proper manipulation of gemstones. Religious encounters as one might imagine definitely occurred, as Rushby met with Zoroastrians who had fled from Aden, Yemen after the British left, observed a Sikh worship ceremony in the Golden Temple, and met a number of Jainists, going on a Jain pilgrimage and encountering members of both sects of the religion, both the Digambaras or "sky-clads," who believe that it is most holy to be without clothing, and the Svetambaras or "white-clads," who believe that nudity is not possible in an imperfect world. Rushby visited Alaung, the world's largest ship breaking yard, where tens of thousands of unskilled laborers work on an oil-soaked beach to destroy 50,000 tonne tankers with practically their bare hands. One of my favorite parts was his visit to Bilkha, once a tiny state that was only 7 miles wide and 10 miles long. Rushby met with the last descendents of its raja, a man with memories of a garage of Rolls-Royces, a stable of fine race horses and elephants, and lion-hunting expeditions, now a friendly and affable man sought by the locals for kindly advice, with only a single servant that he treats like a son, a man who took pleasure in personally fixing his own jeep and in participating in studies of the lions of the Gir Forest, no longer seeking them as trophies but working hard to conserve them for the future.

A good book, at the back of the book there was a helpful chronology of the diamond and a bibliography. Though there were two maps some of the places he visited were not noted on them.

Travel Writing at its Very Best

This is not a book about diamonds. Instead it is the chronicle of a wonderful offbeat trip through India tracing the path that the Koh-i-noor diamond may have followed.
The author is that rarest and most estimable kind of travel writer who acts as the reader's eyes and ears. When Rushby describes a scene you see it, hear it, smell it and feel it. When he describes a conversation he captures the person's speech patterns, their personal idiosyncrasies, and makes them come alive. Unlike many other current travel writers, Rushby does not waste your time with pages about himself and his personal problems or his reactions to the people and places he visits. Instead, he gives you enough data so that you can make up your own mind about the poeple and places he describes.
And what fascinating places they are! Southern Indian haunts of small time diamond smugglers, the ruined palaces of Mughal emperors, the studies of eccentric professors, the shabby apartments of claiments to the wealth of deposed rajas. All these are there and more, as the author moves through a series of cheap hotels via questionable transport of the sort that the reader loves to hear about but is glad not to have to actually use.
This book reminded me a lot of Eric Hansen's Motoring with Mohammed, another of my favorite travel books. It's a definite "must read" for any serious armchair traveller!

much more than the history of diamonds is told....

Kevin Rushby's trek across India in search of the legendary diamond, the "Koh-I-Noor" (mountain of light)is much more than a history of this fabled and "cursed" stone from the Golconda mine. Rushby's journey takes the reader through many small villages, many of them long abandoned after British rule.
Rushby's days in Gujarat state are the most interesting. There, he meets an old gentleman who lives in a large but very lonely estate home. They speak of the old days when the gentleman's estate was full of people, servants and animals. Now, his days are spent on the rooftop terrace taking tea in the afternoon and reminiscing about his past. A sense of melancholy and lost time is felt throughout all the varied characters' lives Rushby comes to know so well.
The story of the diamond trade and the wars fought over their inherent riches is only a small part of the book. The stories of the Indian people Rushby meets make this a great read for those of us who have not yet seen India. Time for me to book passage!

Like most of the rest of us, Christian students tend to set the bar too low for themselves, especially when it comes to actively following Jesus. This 6-week Bible study curriculum and correlated-but-stand-alone daily devotional will challenge students to accept the mission to live like Jesus now, not later, by telling the stories of adolescents from the Bible and in modern life who did -- and are doing -- significant and amazing things in the world and for the God who saves. Why Not Now? will mine stories from the young lives of Miriam, Joseph, David, Solomon, Daniel, and Mary to find why and how they said yes to God before they would have been old enough to rent a car in our modern society. All six of these people believed God could use their lives to do something that mattered. What is holding us back? To bolster the argument and generate interest in the books, Why Not Now? will also seek contributions from living examples of people who are doing or have done things we just don’t expect students to do these days. Abby Sunderland, for instance, generated worldwide controversy for attempting to sail around the world solo simply because she was 16 at the time. How dare she? How cold her parents allow that? Another 16-year-old, cheerleader Kealey Oliver, recently made news for courageously tackling a shoplifter at the local mall rather that letting him escape. She saw it as her responsibility to stand for justice. And 17-year-old Steven Ortiz made headlines by demonstrating the practical wisdom of bartering his way from an old cell phone to a convertible Porsche. Why Not Now? will use stories like theirs -- and those from Scripture -- to equip youth leaders to challenge students to use their unique gifts, skills, and opportunities right now to do bigger things with their lives for God’s glory. The curriculum will include teaching outlines, commentary, group activities, discussion questions, and engaging assignments that will help students to catch the vision for imagining how much they might be capable of. Right now. The daily devotional will offer a similar challenge directly from the pages of the Bible using brief and provocative commentary, directed prayers, questions for reflection, and brief exercises designed to help students quickly put into practice what they’re learning from Scripture.

Mark Matlock has been working with youth pastors, students, and parents for more than two decades. He’s the Executive director of Youth Specialties and founder of WisdomWorks Ministries and PlanetWisdom. He’s the author of several books including The Wisdom On series, Living a Life That Matters, Don’t Buy the Lie, and Raising Wise Children. Mark lives in Texas with his wife, Jade, and their two teenage children.
