From Publishers Weekly
Ignore the title, which is bad. It's okay, even, to ignore the writing exercises. Barbara Abercrombie's Writing Out the Storm: Reading and Writing Your Way Through Serious Illness or Injury is a moving, unsentimental portrait of the author with breast cancer, as she navigates her fear of death and love of writing with intelligence and grace; it's a worthwhile book for anyone who's ever thought about writing or thought about sickness. With excerpts from the famous (Raymond Carver, Andre Dubus, Gilda Radner) and the un- (a Spanish-speaking woman who distances herself from her cancer by only writing about it in English), Abercrombie, who teaches in the UCLA Extension Writer's Program, shows how others have dealt with mortal issues and how "nothing can heal the spirit like creativity and faith."

A Comforting Guide for Writing Yourself Through the Challenge of Illness or Injury
By Charlene Rubush
Abercrombie, a writing teacher and cancer survivor, got the idea for this book in a workshop she taught at the Wellness Center in Los Angeles.
The theme of the workshop was "writing as therapy, a way to deal emotionally with a life-threatening illness."

Abercrombie discovered many things while leading the workshop, such as the fact that non-writers needed guides; to hear other voices telling their stories.

The group found inspiration in poetry, memoir and fiction by writers such as Stephen King, Raymond Carver, Andre Dubus, and non-writers such as Christopher Reeve and Lance Armstrong.

The author(p.xii)asks the question "Why write?" and answers, "Because dealing with your emotions on paper can be a safe and private way to expose your feelings. Because the details of your life are precious and important and not to be lost. Because writing out painful emotions can be good for your health."

She notes that James W. Pennebaker, a psychologist, did a study of university students. Two groups wrote for twenty minutes a day, for four consecutive days. One group was told to write about superficial subjects, while the other group was to write about an extremely stressful event in their life. Blood samples from both groups were tested the day before writing, after the last writing session, then six weeks later.

Dr. Pennebaker found that the students who wrote about painful, traumatic events showed heightened immune function, and also paid fewer visits to the university's health center in the following weeks.

Pennebaker asserts that "Writing helps to keep our psychological compass oriented. Although not a panacea, writing can be an inexpensive, simple and sometimes painful way to help maintain our health."

Abercrombie (p.145) offers her book as an invitation to start writing. "There is no right or wrong way to record your life, to express your thoughts and your feelings. Just begin."

The book has writing exercises, prompts, laughter, and insights from a fascinating array of people who have written about their various illnesses, injuries, and challenges. It's really a book for everyone, as we're all going to be patients and caregivers at some point in our lives.

It is also a book that can be read and re-read, and still unearth new gems of wisdom. It would make a great gift for anyone going through an illness, an emotional crisis, recovering from an accident, or for one experiencing the stresses of caregiving. Very highly recommended!

Writing Out The Storm.

Writing Out The Storm by Barbara Abercrombie.Paperback 145 pages. As The title suggest you can read and write your way through the storm of serious accident, illness or injury. It provides a positive way to cope with long standing medical issues. This book is not for the casual reader.

I was drawn to it because I have Cerebral Paly and I was looking for a way to cope with the psychological effects of this. I like many people in this book want to live my life rather than being defined by a condition. I liked this book for many reasons.I was attracted by the wide variety of people sharing their situatins.I found it very helpful because the sources of the material was all given. If you want to use it as a writing/ reference book,a simple, clear structure encourages the writer and helps with those difficult blocks. It also provides a page turning story.I think it is clear I am a fan. Give it a go and good luck!

Writing Out The Storm
By A Customer
This is an extremely sensitively and well written book about an increasingly common and yet delicate and difficult subject. While the medical specialists are doing their best to deal with the physical aspects of this unwelcome arrival into our own life or the life of a loved one, what do we do about the equally important aspect of the emotional, spiritual and psychic effects?
Using her own personal experience to provide a path to examine the many anxieties and traumas through what was an eventual successful outcome for her the author provides inspiration from famous authors and people like the rest of us that end up providing comfort, insight and even humor into a situation that once seemed simply hopeless.
It may seem awkward or even trivial to write to one of the chapter questions until after you do one but the insight, the relief and the understanding at the end can make this aspect of the book as valuable as a simple reading of an important entry into the library on this important subject.

Talksheets Are Back
By The JH Uth Guy
The king of the "talksheets", David Lynn is back and better than ever with his newest addition to his talksheet series of books with More Middle School Talksheets: Epic Old Testament Stories. It is the companion to his book released this spring, Middle School Talksheets: Epic Old Testament Stories. As usual it provides 52 grab-and-go reproducible student handouts with teaching helps and lesson plans on the back of each. It picks up where the first book left off midway through the book of Judges with the story of Barak and Deborah and closes out in II Kings with the story of King Josiah. Each talksheet is well done and thought provoking. Each sheet cuts to core of the story with discussion questions, age appropriate case studies and life application challenges.

Do not dismiss this book as a quick addition to the talksheet series. Lynn comes back around with a fresh resource what is much needed for Middle school and Jr. High ministry. If you are looking for a resource to help you go through the Old Testament with your students, look no further. The combined resources of the two books give any youth worker two solid years of study. If you are looking to complete the three year of your middle school ministry consider Lynn's other book, Jr. High/Middle School Talksheets: Psalms & Proverbs: Updated , to round out your teaching schedule.

A great and enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this book as much as reading about the five Tibetan rites in the "secret of the fountain of youth". A great spiritual adventure that will make an impression on your soul.

OK, But Disappointing
By Imperial Topaz
In 1990, I spent two months in Nepal and Tibet, and visted numerous monasteries. I have also been an amateur student of Buddism, on-and-off, for a number of years. This book looked interesting, but I was disappointed.

I have to agree with many of the comments of reviewer David Yeh, on the American Amazon site, whom I quote: " '...Master Fwap told me that most people who have been enlightened in their previous incarnations would normally begin to regain their past-life enlightenment-if they lived at sea level-at around the age of twenty-nine, when their astrological Saturn return took place. He said that living in or near sacred mountains, because of their beneficial auric influences, often made past-life returns happen even faster.' What?! Sea level? Saturn return? Auric influences? I'm not close-minded, but Lenz makes little attempt to make believers out of non-believers, he throws out jargon like this with impunity."

I did find some aspects of the book interesting, but I thought it got really bogged down, and it was hard for meto persevere to the end. Having done so, I felt disappointed. There wasn't any payoff for me.

Simplistic at best
By A Customer
Lenz's book tries to outline Buddhism for a weekend reader. It's easy to read and quick too but, at times, it becomes so overly self-promoting and indulgent that it's hard to keep flipping the pages. Has a tendency to repeat himself - a lot.
There are a lot better books for beginning Buddhism than this. It's mildly entertaining however.

Wild Girls: Paris, Sappho, and Art: The Lives and Loves of Natalie Barney and Romaine Brooks, by Diana Souhami

Seduction, madness, addiction, suicide - this was the bohemian world of Natalie Barney and Romaine Brooks, two pivotal figures in the cultural life of Paris at the turn of the century. Natalie and Romaine met in London during World War I and their partnership lasted until Natalie died 52 years later. They were both American expatriates; unconventional, energetic, flamboyant and rich. Natalie was known as 'the wild girl of Cincinnatti' and had numerous affairs with other women: Renee Vivien who nailed shut the windows of her apartment, wrote about the loveliness of death, drank eau de cologne and died of anorexia aged 30; and Dolly Wilde niece of Oscar, who ran up terrible phone bills and died of a drugs overdose. Her Friday afternoon salons in the cobbled garden of her Parisian house were for 'introductions and culture' and were frequented by Gertrude Stein, Colette, Radclyffe Hall and Edith Sitwell. Romaine achieved fame in her own lifetime and after as an artist. She painted her lovers including Gabriele d'Annunzio with whom she had a terrible and tortured relationship, and the ballerina Ida Rubinstein. However her relationship with Natalie was constant and in their eventful years together they threw up a liberating spirit of culture, style and candour.

From Publishers Weekly
Though poet Natalie Barney and artist Romaine Brooks rubbed (usually more than) elbows with the artistic elites of Bohemian Paris, neither achieved fame nor acclaim. So it is that Souhami (Mrs. Keppel and Her Daughter) focuses on their relationships with one another and their many lovers, producing a book that reads more like a lesbian soap opera than a biography. The author describes people each of the two American women encountered, but concentrates less on their interactions with one another than on Barney's affairs with, among many others, Liane de Pougy, Renee Vivien and Lily de Gramont. Barney "liked lots of sex, lavish display and theatricality, and wanted not to bind love to rules, particularly to the rule of exclusivity," Souhami explains. "She divided her amours into liaisons, demi-liaisons, and adventures, and called her nature fidele/infidele." By the time the discussion turns to Barney and Brooks-well past the book's halfway point-readers have been inundated with so many of Barney's flings that it is difficult to keep things straight. Souhami writes in short, declarative sentences ("Alice was seventeen. Her bereaved mother took her on a grand tour of Europe. Alice sketched impressions of Paris, Milan and Rome."), a style at odds with her libertine subjects that gives the impression she shortchanged texture and detail in favor of creating a tally of Barney's multitudinous rendezvous. An entertaining account of the couple's 50-year relationship - one that was never tested by the rigours of co-habitation. THE INDEPENDENT The book really takes off, when we come to Natalie's long affair with the portraitist Romaine Brooks... Diana Souhami is almost incapable of writing a clumsy sentence. A life still left in shadow
By International Acclaim
Gray is a difficult colour to master. It is enigmatic, aloof. It can be warm, with tints of peach and pink, or cold, with tints of sapphire and indigo. But no one could ever doubt that American artist Romaine Brooks was a master of gray. From her mysterious, icy portraits of members of the belle époque and the jazz age, to her preference for colorless fashions and décor, to the melancholy of her own day to day existence, Brooks was almost the personification of the colour gray itself. It would take great skill to write a biography of such a woman. Therefore I was ecstatic to discover that Diana Souhami had taken on the task of writing a book on the entwined lives of Romaine Brooks and her long-time companion, Paris saloneuse Natalie Clifford Barney. Both American, both wealthy, both artistic, Barney and Brooks still made an odd pair. Barney was the ever-social butterfly, flitting from flower to flower, beautiful and flamboyant. Brooks was her exact opposite, a withdrawn, flighty creature from a background of insanity, who preferred to live in the shadows, alone. This sounds like perfect material for the talents of Souhami, who has already tackled the lives of such challenging individuals as Radclyffe Hall, Gertrude Stein and Greta Garbo. Souhami also wrote the award-winning "Selkirk's Island", untangling the threads of the life of Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Defoe's classic, "Robinson Crusoe". Yes, Brooks and Barney seemed in good hands.

I cannot express, then, the disappointment that this anticipated book brought. Distressingly short not only for a biography of two distinct souls, but also an examination of the times in which they lived, the book is riddled with factual errors and blunders. Souhami begins her race by stumbling. In her Foreword she states plainly, one would say almost flippantly, of her use of the Internet as a main source of research-and it shows. The author appears to think that everything you find on the Web is factual, not realizing that the information to be found there is only as accurate as the knowledge of those posting it. This is a fatal error. Souhami seems almost dismissive of her own research, telling us about how much she enjoyed reading the pop-up advertisements she encountered while on the Net for such things as sexy chat, and even giving us a footnote detailing a pill that can help men lengthen the size of their endowment. Souhami further mars the book with the constant insertion of bits and pieces of her own past that, although well written, are disturbingly incongruous and intrusive and give the impression that she would much rather be talking about herself.

Next, Souhami falters in her facts, tripping too many times to enumerate, but here are a few major potholes: Lady Mary "Minnie" Anglesey is said on page 40 to be "about to divorce her transvestite husband." Souhami then footnotes that Mary was married to Henry Cyril Paget, the 4th Marquess of Anglesey. This is a gross mistake. Mary Anglesey was indeed married to the 4th Marquess of Anglesey, but she was married to Henry Paget, not Henry Cyril Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey, who was not only infamous for his flashy dressing-up and obsession for jewelry, but was also Mary's own son (and, for the record, Henry Cyril Paget's wife's name was Lilian). Next we are told that the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio's nickname for Brooks was "Cinerana". This is incorrect; his nickname for her was "Cinerina", meaning, "little gray one". Also, the Baroness Madeleine Deslandes was known as "Elsie", not "Ilsie". On page 141 we are told that Brooks described in a letter the "house" on Capri of the eccentric Marchesa Casati as "simply beautiful", but the author fails to point out that Casati's "house" was, in fact, the famous Villa San Michele, rented from Dr. Axel Munthe.

Beguiling anecdotes also slip through the fingers of an author so proud of her diligent international research. No mention is made of the mystery revolving around Brooks' painting "The White Bird" and how some historians believe it is a portrait of Barney's lover, the renowned grand horizontal, Liane de Pougy. Nor are we told that the face of the cat in Brooks' portrait of Baroness Catherine D'Erlanger was deliberately painted to resemble that of her husband's. Nor do we hear of the intriguing story that, after becoming a virtual hermit in Nice, living in a room devoid of everything but a bed and table, and having given away all of her paintings, drawings and writings, beneath Romaine Brooks' death bed was found the only canvas she kept, her portrait of Luisa Casati. Also, there is no mention of the small book, written by Elizabeth de Gramont, another of Barney's paramours, on Brooks' work that was published in 1952. Nor that the normally pathologically reclusive Brooks granted a long interview with French writer Michel Desbrueres that appeared in the Parisian periodical "Bizarre" in 1968, just two years before her death. Souhami also claims that Brooks painted a portrait of artist Elizabeth Eyre de Lanux, but, oddly, there is no reference to this painting in any prior biography of Brooks or in any catalogue of her oeuvre. Has Souhami discovered a hitherto unknown painting? We are given no clue. Perhaps another fifteen minutes of research on the Internet would have cleared up all of this-or better yet some good old-fashioned investigatory legwork and elbow grease that Souhami's research sorely lacks.

Next is the matter of Souhami's innumerable and annoying footnotes. She footnotes everyone and sundry with what she must have felt were charming and witty caricatures-Noel Coward is summed up as being "friendly with the lesbian haut monde", composer Prince Edmond de Polignac's only reference says "he died after eight years of marriage" and Luisa Casati is dubbed "the patron saint of exhibitionists". Such sketches are neither charming nor witty, and consistently get in the way of reading the text. As a reader, I also do not need to know such minutiae as how many seats there are in the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, that Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice" was first performed in 1762, or the lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne". It is most interesting to note that even though the author strives to introduce us to every person in the book that some celebrated individuals such as Madame Eugenia Errazuris, a bright grand dame of the beau monde, are left floundering and unannotated, while poet Anna de Noailles, writer Paul Morand, and interior designer, Elsie de Wolfe, each a distinguished sitter for Brooks, are not mentioned at all (nor is the fact that Brooks' portrait of de Wolfe was often sarcastically called "The White Goat", because of the small ceramic goat that sits beside the designer and mimics her simpering expression perfectly). And worst of all, these intrusive footnotes shine a glaring light on the fact that Souhami never footnotes any of her relevant and/or fascinating facts. How do we know that Liane de Pougy's asparagus soup congealed and her risotto went cold while she, at lunch, waited for writer Max Jacob to arrive, or that after being pelted by preserved cherries by boys at the Long Beach Hotel in New York, a young Natalie Barney ran into the arms of Oscar Wilde for comfort. Where does this information come from? Such charming tidbits require references for future researchers.

And here is where Souhami's book fails the most-as a research tool and reference book for the future. Subsequent authors and students cannot use a book rife with easily correctable errors without perpetuating those same mistakes ad infinitum. As a highly respected writer, shame on you, Ms. Souhami. You should have known better.

Wild Girls - A Book Review
By One More Option
"To love is to see through two pairs of eyes." ~ Natalie Barney.

If a good book is a book that stimulates more new ideas and responses than any other book you've read in a long time, then "Wild Girls" was an excellent book for me. The book is so good, there are more interesting things about it than can be written in a concise review. However, the attribute I liked least about this book was its title. The book is about lesbian and bisexual women and their lifestyles in late 19th and 20th century Europe and the U.S. I would not generally define these women as being "wild." Rather, they were making lifestyle decisions as mature women with mature responsibilities. Further, they were not girls, and most often, they did not act immature or "girlish."

Other titles, such as: "Sapphic Idylls" or "Sappho, Paris, and the Arts" would have been better for me.

"Sensuality, wanting a religion, invented love." ~ Natalie Barney.

Overview: The book gives biographical commentary and snapshots about the lives and relationships surrounding two American women: Natalie Barney, a wealthy lesbian socialite, and Romaine Brooks, a wealthy painter. The two women had a non-traditional romantic relationship for over 50 years. During that time, they also had relationships with other women.

The real value of the book for me was in the author's select choices and opinionated commentary on the lives of the many women involved.

Many people may not realize: When you paint a portrait, take a picture, or write a biography of someone, you almost always are involved in portraying that person is a limiting fashion.

Some people don't want portraits of themselves created, not simply because they are vain or don't want to see their own likeness, but also because they don't want to be portrayed in a limited fashion. People are usually more multi-faceted than their portraits or biographies convey.

Reading this biography of Natalie Barney, you will learn a great deal about her and you will understand how passionately many women became involved with her. But I never fully understood what made her so emotionally, sexually, and relationally attractive. Yet, clearly she was very attractive to many women.

If you were an alien from another planet, and all you had as a reference for human sexual interactions was this book, you might think everyone was easily promiscuous with everyone. There are so many women eager to sleep with Natalie that it is a shame we don't have more narrative portrayals of who she was and the physical and social presence she was able to regularly create around her.

"Peaple call it unnatural. All I can say is, it's always come naturally to me." ~ Natalie Barney.

Natalie's writings, of which we see short quotations at the beginnings of the chapters, are insightful and clearly expressed. I think I would need to read more of her writings to better understand her appeal. I have no idea what her personality was like, but her quotations are concise, bright, and funny. Was she brash? Was she a lesbian version of Mae West? Probably not, but both women were extremely smart and sexually candid.

Many women wanted to have ongoing "lasting" relationships with Natalie. Other women wanted to enjoy the sexual and courtship aspects of Natalie, but may have also been drawn to her because she did not present the obligations of maintaining an exclusive, monogamous relationship. For women who were sexually attracted to women, Natalie, who was independently wealthy, possibly presented an attractive, potentially lower maintenance, and discreet option.

You know a book is good when the footnotes are as interesting to read as most book's main text, and that is the case with this book - the footnotes are fascinating snapshots of people and lives that would also be interesting to explore: from Jean Cocteau to Tallulah Bankhead to Gertrude Stein to Gluck to Una Elena Troubridge, on and on. This book is so full of interesting ideas and historical facts that it would be a disservice to read it fast. I wouldn't want to miss anything in or between the lines.

The artist Romaine Brooks wrote a memoir "No Pleasant Memories" that has never been published, and I think it would be fascinating to read, attempting to discern her mindset and perspectives.

One concept that is implied in the book, but not plainly stated is that women who chose to have their portrait painted by Romaine Brooks were taking a great risk. To be painted by Brooks was to increase your risk of being identified as a lesbian in an era when being homosexual was criminal or socially ostracizing. Once your portrait was painted, you would not necessarily be able to control who would own and who would see the painting.

Some of the women who wanted Brooks to paint their portraits may have wanted to make a long term "permanent" statement to future generations, proudly identifying themselves as a member of a rebellious, lesbian social culture.

This book would be a good read for many heterosexual men to learn more personal narratives about how some lesbian women are extremely averse to the thought of having sexual relations with men. Many men understand a strong aversion to sex with other men. But I suspect fewer men are empathetic to how strongly averse some women are to having sex with men. One of the characteristics that may attract some women toward other women, in any era, is the knowledge that pregnancy will never be a risk. The "consequence" of "going all the way" sexually with another woman never creates the same burdens, lifelong obligations, and associations of carrying a pregnancy and raising a child for the rest of your life.

And because some lesbian relationships are often less-visible and less-public than heterosexual relationships, some women may enjoy lesbian relationships because they don't have to deal as much with the social issues involved in being with or having broken up with an intimate social partner. Often there is less explaining to do and less accountability for actions done in secret and out of public view. But in "Wild Girls" we see that there often may be significant lifelong consequences and ongoing repercussions that accompany discreet lesbian liaisons.

Of Barney and Brooks' relationship, the author Diana Souhami speculates:

"Romaine's conundrum was irresolvable. She did not want a sustained one-to-one relationship with Natalie, with all the business of home, commitment and coupledom: she found proximity to her impossible after a short time, but she was nevertheless jealous of Natalie's pursuit of other women." p. 146

I recommend this book highly for anyone wanting to learn more about sexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and relationships in general. The writing is uncommonly candid and insightful. The topics and information are very well selected and presented.

Other reviewers have pointed out factual errors in the book. When I read biography or autobiography, I'm not looking for "The Truth," and I don't devalue a story because of insignificant factual errors. Having said that, the author in this book too often assumed she knew the mindsets and intents of the women discussed. Also, the author did not often enough show the personal correspondence and research used to support her statements. But even with those caveats, it is extremely difficult for any author to communicate the intent and rationales of another person. So, in biography, I appreciate it when authors take the time to give us their best educated guesses.

"We do not touch life except with our hearts." ~ Natalie Barney.

The UK Guardian review of this book by Jad Adams takes a pot shot at Barney and Brooks, saying these rich women didn't change the world and make homosexuality acceptable in the early 20th century. I think Adams' assertion is mean, incorrect, and inconsiderate of these women's context. How do you persecute a member of a persecuted class for not doing what would have likely been impossible and deadly during their lifetime? Further, the book communicates clearly that Brooks and Barney made regular and notorious social and artistic statements supporting the acceptability, pleasantries, and merits of homosexual love.

Brooks and Barney were remarkably bold and brave. Barney published homoerotic books and held regular lesbian social activities. Brooks publicly displayed homosexually-sympathetic paintings. They both worked consistently to promote and create lesbian artistic expressions, social communities, and relationships in a time when homosexuality was criminal, socially ostracized, and a constant threat to their family's wealth and reputation.

"In love there is no status quo." ~ Natalie Barney

"Our shadows are taller than ourselves." ~ Natalie Barney.

I don't feel like this book offered anything more to the knowledge base than what was already written in Wild Hearts.

On Celtic Tides: One Man's Journey Around Ireland by Sea Kayak, by Chris Duff

A sea kayak battles the freezing Irish waters as the morning sun rises out of the countryside. On the western horizon is the pinnacle of Skellig Michael-700 feet of vertical rock rising out of exploding seas. Somewhere on the isolated island are sixth-century monastic ruins where the light of civilization was kept burning during the Dark Ages by early Christian Irish monks. Puffins surface a few yards from the boat, as hundreds of gannets wheel overhead on six foot wing spans. The ocean rises violently and tosses paddler and boat as if they were discarded flotsam. This is just one day of Chris Duff's incredible three month journey.

Amazon.com Review
"Every time I thought I had reached the peak, that the passion for the journey must certainly begin to wane, I would stumble on another experience that pulled me onward," writes Chris Duff, recounting his solo circumnavigation of Ireland by sea kayak in the summer of 1996. "Stroke by stroke, four miles an hour, Ireland was filling me with its life blood." Beginning and ending in Dublin, Duff paddled 1,200 miles over the course of three months. Sometimes he piloted his frail craft through waters too tumultuous even for hardy local fisherman; other times he sought refuge in sixth-century monastic ruins on coastal islands or waited out storms for days on end in his tent. In this sense, Duff's journey is a study in contrasting worlds: land and sea; past and present; solitude and society. The story's suspense comes not from a questionable outcome but in the surprise of daily encounters. Who or what relic of the past will the author stumble upon next? Ultimately it is Duff's openness to ancient and elemental forces, expressed in starkly honest prose, that propels his narrative through the churning waters of Irish history and landscape. But this is also the story of a sea kayaker at the top of his game, dealing with nature's harsh blows and quiet caresses. --Kristopher Kaiyala

From Publishers Weekly
In a book whose only success is bringing to life the thrashing seas of coastal Ireland and whose ultimate failure is trying to evoke the ethos of the storied isle, Duff describes a 1200-mile circumnavigation from Dublin to Dublin. A seasoned kayaker who has undertaken several herculean voyages, Duff is uniquely suited to the challenge of the west coast of Ireland, where the gushing Atlantic clashes with the rugged land. But while Duff does give readers a sense of the ocean's power and peril, he falls far short of exemplifying Ireland's reputation for inspiring creativity. Duff, who is of Irish descent, plays on the theme of the journey as a route to self-discovery, but does so in a way that hardly captivates. Often Duff seems to get in the way of his story, when the focus should be on Ireland itself. There is no doubt that the island's beauty and majesty move Duff, but his attempts to convey his feelings are often cloying. "In a hushed voice that came deep from within," he writes on encountering a sea bird, "I said: 'You are so beautiful my friend. What have you seen and where have you been today?' " The few insights into Ireland's culture and history come from the locals Duff meets. But these encounters are tainted by a formula that wears thin quickly: the fisherman or villager expresses disbelief at Duff's undertaking, Duff assures them that he is serious and they proclaim that he must be mad. Though the trip is not always pretty, Duff is able to pull himself through adversity, and the sheer achievement of finishing speaks for itself. Duff's book, however, is not nearly as impressive an accomplishment. (July)

From Library Journal
Duff, one of the worlds top names in sea kayaking, has traveled over 14,000 miles by kayak since 1983. Not one to do anything by halves, he was the first person to circumnavigate the Island of Great Britain. In 1996, he made the 1200-mile kayak trip around Ireland and became the only person ever to have soloed the British Isles in their entirety. With rich prose, Duff eloquently describes the sights, culture, history, and people of the Irish coast. His writing evokes both the force of nature as he describes his fight with the waves at the mouth of the Shannon River and the civility of tea and scones in a quaint pub in Clare. Suitable for both public and academic libraries catering to a clientele interested in travel narratives.ASandra Knowles, Henderson Cty. P.L., Hendersonville, NC

A mind-numbing slog
By Alexander D. Gray
Chris Duff's journey and skill as a kayaker are not in question here. He's definitely got skills and experience.

What was maddening about this book was the starry-eyed reverence, awe and humility he had for every single damn rock and cliff and farmhouse he ran across. Every stone "spoke" to him, every cliff called out the timeless power of the sea, every ancient monastery still had ghosts running around in it.

His encounters with the people of Ireland at least brought him back to the living, somewhat, but even then, he has this sense of awe for the simple farming and fishing folk that, I'm sorry, just gets old after a while. He talks about visiting a pub on one stop, and being both exhilirated and driven to tears in the same song. Really? Call me a cynic, but Chris might want to adjust his meds.

I came away from this book thinking one of two things: Either Chris' "book" persona is a some ideal that he has in his head of what a serious "writer" and traveler should be... and that there are other bits of his character that for one reason or another he chose not to share. Like a sense of humor, perhaps.

Or this book really is a deep, honest, view into this guy's psyche. In which case, he sounds tedious, pretentious and boring.

Queer Cowboys: Desire in 19th-Century Westerns, by Chris Packard

Was the American Cowboy gay? Judging from the earliest representations of cowboys and other frontier figures in popular literature—who typically preferred a "buddy" over a wife—the answer seems to be yes. Evidence from books by nineteenth-century Western writers (from legends such as James Fenimore Cooper, Mark Twain, and Owen Wister, to more obscure novelists and diarists) shows how same-sex intimacy and homoerotic admiration were key aspects of Westerns well before the word "homosexual" and its synonyms were invented. American writers celebrated erotic frontier friendships as alternatives to the lawless violence that characterized stories about the early settlers’ fabled lives. These males-only clubs of journalists, cowboys, miners, Indians, and vaqueros defined themselves by excluding femininity and the cloying ills of domesticity, while embracing what Roosevelt called "strenuous living" with other bachelors in the relative"purity" of wilderness conditions. Queer Cowboys recovers this forgotten culture of exclusively masculine, sometimes erotic, and often intimate camaraderie in fiction, photographs, illustrations, song lyrics, historicalephemera, and theatrical performances.

"Why go to Mars when we've got it all here in L.A.?" --Larry Storch

"Finally there's a book that tells L.A.'s secrets, secrets I never even knew about. This is a must-read if you live in L.A. or are just visiting. This is a m a a a z i n g." --Rodney Bingenheimer, deejay, KROQ, Los Angeles.

About the Author
Anthony R. Lovett is a full-time cynic and semi-retired bon vivant who sometimes poses as a writer. A musician, artist and actor, Lovett is a wounded veteral of L.A.'s improv scene. The author is ashamed to admit that he has also written rock videos, appeared in Kmart commercials, and co-starred in one of the worst low-budget movies ever made. Lovett's articles have appeared in Rolling Stone, Playboy, L.A. Weekly, and others. A Texas transplant, he lives with his wife and daughter just a stone's throw from the Mason family's old hangout, Spahn Ranch.

Matt Maranian headed straight for Los Angeles in 1984 to pursue an ill-fated acting career. A string of insignificant television appearances culiminated with a brief recurring sting on one of the worst sitcoms ever made, Mr. Belvedere, in which he co-starred with a goat. He immediately switched careers, and immersed himself in what has become an ongoing investigation of just what makes L.A. so damn weird. His writings have appeared in bOING bOING, The Los Angeles Reader, Harper's, and British Esquire. He lives in the San Fernando Valley with his wife, Loretta Palazzo.

The book that made me fall in love with L.A.
By James
It was the review of Cole's P.E. Buffet (page 12) that did it. How can you NOT want to dine in a restaurant described as follows: "Once you have gotten used to the stale cigarette effluvium you'll detect a putrid sub-odor; hard to place, but something akin to the scent of the repeatedly pissed-in pants of an elderly man who's recently consumed a large plate of steamed asparagus"? Sadly, I missed the asparagus undertones, as the doggie (I hope!) doo-doo I stepped in on my way into the restaurant masked even the fragrance of my tasty, inexpensive lunch of BBQ lamb shanks. I've now eaten my way through most of the restaurants in LA Bizarro and I've never had a bad meal. Indeed, some of the places Lovett and Maranian mention--Clifton's Cafeteria, for instance--are now among my favorite places to dine on earth! I'm also working my way through the non-culinary attractions and having a helluva time doing so. I was glad to read last year that Chronicle Books plans to publish an enlarged and updated edition of this indispensable vade mecum, for time has ravaged some of the more promising-sounding attractions. For example, Broadway's Orpheum Theater, home to the Marx Brothers among others, has been gloriously restored, but the men's-room glory hole to which the authors envision Groucho resorting for some pre-curtain relief has, tragically, been remodeled out of existence. Still, ten years after it's publication, this is the BEST guide to L.A. I know. In fact, though I own many L.A. guidebooks, I own THREE copies of this one. One stays in the car, another lives in my day-pack, and a third adorns my bathroom, where its bowel-movement-length entries have beguiled many an otherwise unremarkable stool-time. (By the way, Maranian's Pad and its sequel, Pad Parties, are the only decorating and entertaining manuals any LA Bizarro lover will ever need.) Thanks, fellas!

Very hard to read!
By A Customer
I bought this book from Amazon and wound up returning it for a credit because it was totally unreadable. The very tiny, bold-faced type is, on most of the pages, set against garish green and pink blotches of color, making it a migraine-inducing read. It's probably not a bad book, but the way it is laid out makes it more of a headache than it's worth.

Surreal? Yes! Terrifying? Yes! Entertaining? Yes!
By someone_who_reads
I've lived in and around L.A. for almost all of my life, and I've never been to a lot of the places in this book, nor do I know many people who have been to more than a couple of these places. Having a lot of relatives in the Midwest, the South, and the Eastern Seaboard, I hear a lot about how we Californians are perceived in other parts of the country, and this little guide can only solidify our reputations of being...well...weird. It's easy to become jaded by the perversity that surrounds us all the time, so to have it stare at me from between the pages of this book is quite a jolt of reality, or unreality, or whatever you want to call it. Just think, the people with the kind of imagination that can dream up and create these landmarks have lived (or are still living) among us normal, decent folk....that kind of scares me!
Anyway, even if you never plan to visit the City of Angels, this is a fascinating read. The variations of the old "is that a pickle in your pocket" line gets repetitive, but the subject matter and the authors' deliciously twisted points of view counteract that. As far as I can tell, it's pretty well-researched (I especially enjoyed comparing my own experience with the Men's restroom at the Madonna Inn with that of the authors). Be warned, though: this is not suitable reading for the rugrats, and you wouldn't want to leave it lying around the house if your strict, judgemental Baptist grandmother decides to pay you a visit.
