I've owned this book for a while. While it isn't a "serious" magic book, it does have some valuable material for anyone with a cursory interest in learning a few tricks. There're 1 or 2 REALLY GOOD card tricks in this one!

About the Author
John W. Kingdon has taught political science at the University of Michigan since 1965 and is the author of numerous books.

From Library Journal
In this brief and accessible book, Kingdon (political science, Univ. of Michigan) tackles several basic, important questions often left unasked by the average American: What makes the American people different from people of other nations, and how and why did we become different? Essentially, the answers lie in what we believe about ourselves and our government. Kingdon argues that the basic components of "American ideology"?individualism and equality?coupled with a deep-seated mistrust of government growing out of the experience of the earliest American immigrants created the conditions from which our government, one of limited powers, was designed. Once started down the path of limited government, Americans rarely looked to government as the solution to societal problems. Hence, Kingdon suggests the center of politics in the United States, even today, is to the right of most of the industrialized nations of Europe. While Kingdon's book presents no new research on this subject, it is a refreshing and engaging review of what constitutes our political culture and its consequences for contemporary public policy.?Thomas J. Good facts, but opinions open to debate.
By A Customer
I disagreed with many of the authors opinions in this book, but I will give him credit. He does at least give a fleeting glance at his opponents and dissenters.
As far as I can tell with my limited knowledge, his facts are accurate. While I do not agree with many of his points, I did find the book well laid out organizationally.
He was very clear in his stating of facts and his opinions. He also separated the two very well. He clearly noted when he was stating facts and when he was stating an opinion. I did notice one rather unsubstantiated generalization in the party unity portion of his argument, but I found very few examples of strongly biased generalizations.
The author seems to suggest a rather unrealistic goal of a compromise between the European system of democracy and the American government style. This idea would require too many changes in a society that generally resists change. This a strong book factually, though some of the opinions are open to debate.
I do like his idea of setting out exactly why America is so unusual. This would be a good book for students to read to gain a bit of knowledge of America as compared to European and other industrialized nations. Though I personally did not care for the book because of the opinions expressed, I do believe that it was worthwhile to read if only to pick up the idiosyncracies of the American style of government.
Peace, Mike

Stoned : A Memoir of London in the 1960s, by Andrew Loog Oldham

In 1963, Andrew Loog Oldham was an ultra-hip and precocious hustler of genius on the London scene, with a keen eye for the next look and a willingness to gamble on it. He was all of nineteen when Brian Epstein too him on to be the Beatles' London press agent, and already regarded as someone who could make things happen. But it was when he went to hear a relatively unknown blues combo perform that Oldham found his true calling. "I met the Rollin' Stones," he recalls simply, "and said hello to the rest of my life."

Stoned is a memoir of a London exploding out of post-War ambition and innocence. British war babies had absorbed American music-Elvis, Buddy Holly, Little Richard-the American movie, and James Dean, and from them synthesized a sound and look of their own. The time was ripe for brash entrepreneurs like Oldham, and they seized it. Oldham knew at a glance that the Stones were the future. He took on more than a band; he took on an irresistible force that, with his vision, would become the Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band of All Time.

In addition to indelible portraits of Mick Jagger and crew, Stoned regales the reader with candid memories of John Lennon ("Being with Lennon was a verbal exposition of the Russian Roulette sequence in Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter), Bob Dylan ("He wasn't an act, even if he was. He had the magic and words of life already"), and Marianne Faithfull-whom Oldham also created. Joined by contemporaries such as Pete Townshend, Vidal Sassoon, Diana Vreeland, Nik Cohn, and others who counted, Oldham gives us a privileged, brilliantly clear-eyed, and unmistakably authentic view back to where, for generations of music fans, things first started rolling.

From Publishers Weekly
Oldham is and forever will be best known as the trendy hustler from mid-1960s swinging London who discovered the Rolling Stones and molded their bad-boy tendencies in his own image. After the Stones unceremoniously dumped him as manager during the Summer of Love, Oldham more or less disappeared from the rock 'n' roll mapAproducing a few artists here and there and living off his past success. But as shown by this delightful cut-and-paste romp (interviews with Oldham spliced together with comments from other hipsters such as designer Mary Quant, the Who's Pete Townshend and writer Nik CohnAbut, curiously, no interviews with any of the Stones), Oldham's memories are not only sharp, insightful and full of gossip, but also reflect that he has probably forgotten more about the music business in his fast-paced early life than most of his peers can claim to know. The Stones don't appear until halfway through the book, but the pre-1963 material is perhaps the most intriguing part of Oldham's memoir. As he moved from posh schools to '50s lowlife to early '60s social scenes, Oldham probably met every big name and con artist who ever populated London or the south of FranceAfrom Picasso (from whom he bummed money) to infamous producers Mickie Most and Phil Spector. The wealth of information, details and larger-than-life stories about the London music scene before the Beatles and the Stones that Oldham recounts provides a valuable record of a fertile and fascinating, albeit overlooked, cultural era. At 19, he may have known "nothing about the music biz," as Pete Townshend confirms, but as a "worldly-wise" purveyor of '60s excess who may have blown his mind way back when, Oldham proves today with this hotter-than-hot-for-hard-core-fans memoir that he has never lost his sense or sensibility. 60 b&w photos.

From Library Journal
After watching Brian Epstein transform the Beatles from loutish toughs into charming moptops, Oldham took five well-mannered boys and turned them into every parent's nightmare: the Rolling Stones. In the first of an intended "triography," Oldham tells how he went from working for British fashion icon Mary Quant, to becoming a press agent for the Beatles, to eventually becoming the manager and record producer for the second biggest band in Britain. Despite his legendary ego, he defers to passages from friends and associates, who take the story into unwelcome tangents and leave the reader anxious for Oldham's returnAhis colorful, slang-heavy voice is a hoot. The Rolling Stones do not even appear until more than half-way through, and this installment ends abruptly with the release of their first album. An optional purchase, though Volume 2 promises to cover the band's rise to megastardom, Oldham's split with the Stones, and the launching of his Immediate record label.ALloyd Jansen, Stockton-San Joaquin Cty. P.L., CA

From Booklist
Brian Epstein associate Oldham brought brash enthusiasm to launching the Rolling Stones' long career by carefully creating and promoting them as rock's bad boys, in the process becoming rather a hybrid of Beatles mastermind Epstein and Sex Pistols Svengali Malcolm McLaren. Hyper, manic, occasionally addled and impenetrable, his book, consisting of excerpts from interviews with him, is vintage Oldham and, as rock history from a primary source, significant bilge. Oldham's take on Brian Jones' acquiescence in a plot to replace Mick Jagger early on explains volumes about the deterioration of Jones' relations with Jagger and Richards, and Oldham's ruminations about other gambits give insight into the band's inner workings. The Stones eventually outgrew Oldham, after he had set the tone for what rock promotion would become: thank Oldham, at least somewhat, for the come-ons of acts like Marilyn Manson. Contributions from the likes of Marianne Faithfull and Pete Townshend (oddly obsessed with sexual identities) figure prominently alongside Oldham's, but none of those informants is or was a Stone. Essential Rolling Stones stuff. Mike Tribby

Andrew Loog Oldham...One in a million
By Bob J Asea
This is a GREAT book! It takes place in a time when London was producing film, fashion and music that would forever change people's lives then and now. Even as a pre-teen in those days in which the book is written about, I was very much impressed with the bands that were coming out of England. Most of all it was and still is the Rolling Stones.I have followed the Rolling Stones from the day I heard their first single here in the United States. I have studied their evolution as a band and am quite familiar who Andrew Loog Oldham is and what he did for the Stones. This book was interesting and an absolute delight to read, particulary knowing it was comming directly from Andrew Loog Oldham himself. His style of writing and describing how events occurred is so unique and clever that I found myself re-reading pages instanly for the sheer pleasure of it. Andrew didn't write this book with the intention of writing another book about the Rolling Stones. He wrote about the many interesting people and places that he experianced that shaped his life from the day of his birth to the year of 1964. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment of his triography, knowing that there are more fantastic stories to be read from a man who is one in a million!

Get Inside the Head of one of Rocks Most Important Pioneers
By Stanley M. Angel
This book is a "must-read" for anyone with an interest in the Stones, The Beatles, or the (r)evolution of Rock & Roll during the 60s. Oldham's writing style is superb and highly entertaining. While to some readers it might sound like the author is trying too hard to sound "cool" or "hip," the writing style is true to the man. Andrew Oldham writes in the same manner as he speaks, with a sharp wit and a good sense of humour. And, as one who knows his place in history. The book is definitely entertaining and very interesting in giving three different points of view. Oldham's influence on Rock&Roll is definitely under-appreciated. He was as important to the music and style of Rock and Roll in the 60s as Phil Spector was in a previous era. The insights he provides into the business and personal sides of the music business is very interesting. His relationship with The Beatles (Lennon in particular), and other Icons of that period is intriguing. I especially enjoyed reading about AOL's working relationship with the early Stones, before they were crafted songwriters. It is clear that if Oldham had never met the Stones, he would have made some other band a house-hold name. I really look forward to the second volume in this set.

not fade away
By D. Sean Brickell
ALO, as he references himself through this tour of of ultra-hip England's '60s, has provided a dead-center study of the beginning and early evolution of The Rolling Stones. The momentum of the period also touches on The Bealtes and all the other acts and managers who predated and followed these twin giants of rock 'n' roll. In a word, honesty is what you come away with here. Yes, there are many great tales from the inside about the stars who are today household names. Yes, there is no pulling punches when talking about personalities and/or abuses. And, true to form, there is no shortage of ALO ego when claiming credit for his many contributions. I'm left with as many questions as answers, but along the way ALO does offer a lot of solutions, which is far more than most rock biographies can claim. It's quite an easy and enjoyable read if you're interested in the subject, scholarly but also cinematic.

Why Not Now? Leader's Guide: You Don't Have to

Like most of the rest of us, Christian students tend to set the bar too low for themselves, especially when it comes to actively following Jesus. This 6-week Bible study curriculum and correlated-but-stand-alone daily devotional will challenge students to accept the mission to live like Jesus now, not later, by telling the stories of adolescents from the Bible and in modern life who did -- and are doing -- significant and amazing things in the world and for the God who saves. In a society where cultural adolescence is lingering into the 30s, its no wonder Christian students often fail to confront the call to act meaningfully on their faith in Christ. It’s easy to package that commitment with big ideas like picking a college, a spouse, and a career -- and then to never quite get around to it. God, however, posts no minimum age on discipleship, and his book contains several examples of younger people both willing and able -- in his power -- to do extraordinarily difficult and necessary things with their lives for him. Why Not Now? will mine stories from the young lives of Miriam, Joseph, David, Solomon, Daniel, and Mary to find why and how they said yes to God before they would have been old enough to rent a car in our modern society. All six of these people believed God could use their lives to do something that mattered. What is holding us back? To bolster the argument and generate interest in the books, Why Not Now? will also seek contributions from living examples of people who are doing or have done things we just don’t expect students to do these days. Abby Sunderland, for instance, generated worldwide controversy for attempting to sail around the world solo simply because she was 16 at the time. How dare she? How cold her parents allow that? Another 16-year-old, cheerleader Kealey Oliver, recently made news for courageously tackling a shoplifter at the local mall rather that letting him escape. She saw it as her responsibility to stand for justice. And 17-year-old Steven Ortiz made headlines by demonstrating the practical wisdom of bartering his way from an old cell phone to a convertible Porsche. Why Not Now? will use stories like theirs -- and those from Scripture -- to equip youth leaders to challenge students to use their unique gifts, skills, and opportunities right now to do bigger things with their lives for God’s glory. The curriculum will include teaching outlines, commentary, group activities, discussion questions, and engaging assignments that will help students to catch the vision for imagining how much they might be capable of. Right now. The daily devotional will offer a similar challenge directly from the pages of the Bible using brief and provocative commentary, directed prayers, questions for reflection, and brief exercises designed to help students quickly put into practice what they’re learning from Scripture.

Bank Mergers: Lessons for the Future, by S. Davis

Despite the wall of evidence that bank mergers add little or no value, investors and management continue to fuel the consolidation wave. This book draws on the actual experience of senior executives in over 30 banks with extensive merger experience to demonstrate how most mergers do in fact fail to meet objectives. It explores in detail the issues of strategic positioning, cost and revenue synergies, due diligence, IT selection and conversion, people selection, cultural conflict, leadership, and the decision-making time frame. It concludes that experienced and determined leadership, significant net cost savings, swift decision-making and the cost of IT integration are key variables for success. It also suggests that the prospect of more cross-border mergers and modest short-term cost savings argues for a new pact between investors and bank management.

Review

'A much needed process study on which bank mergers world-wide have succeeded, which ones have failed, and why. Drawing on in-depth interviews, articles, and his wealth of experience as a banker and consultant, Steven Davis provides a rich analysis of the complexities of implementation. He concludes with many lessons on what to do and what not to do that should help future bankers engaged in mergers from making many of the mistakes of their predecessors. That would, indeed, be a welcome development in this industry.' - David Rogers, Professor and Chairman, Management Department, Leonard N.Stern School of Business, New York University

'At a time of enormous change in the banking industry, Steve Davis' comments on both the advantages and pitfalls involved in the current merger mania are well timed. Without being unduly negative, he points out that very few mergers are viewed favourably in the market and gives useful comments on a number of mergers that have occurred. The overall message of the book to CEOs contemplating yet another merger must be caveat emptor.' - Robin Monro-Davies, Group Chief Executive Officer, FITCH IBCA Ltd.

'Ambitious in intent, meticulous in detail and penetrating in analysis, this book moves the discussion on bank mergers up a whole notch. Anyone who is serious about creating a successful merger will benefit from it.' - Sir Brian Pitman, Chairman, Lloyds TSB Group

An excellent, succinct, discussion of a complex subject
By Diego Banducci
I purchased this book in connection with a consulting project that I have been involved with, and am quite pleaseed with it.

Simply written, it provides a clear overview of bank mergers on a worldwide basis, comparing the (significant) differences between mergers in different parts of the world. A useful appendix provides brief summaries of approximately 30 mergers from around the world.

Unfortunately, the material is time-sensitive, and since the book was published in 2000, the major events that have occurred since that time are not included. For instance, the merger of NationsBank and Bank of America (1998) receives short shrift, and the subsequent merger of B of A and Fleet is not mentioned at all. An update would be welcome.

Still, the book is well written, and at 191 pages, wonderfully compact. A fine roadmap for those interested in an overview of the subject.

DO NOT READ
By DJM
This book is absolute trash. I had the misfortune of having to read it cover to cover and I cannot find any redeeming feature. Maddison's arguments are perverse, often unsubstantiated, and some of his observations are quite frankly ridiculous. There is no coherence to the book's structure, and the author seems to feel that the use of long words rids him of the need to develop or back up his points with concrete facts (when really all they do is serve to make Maddison look like an idiot who doesn't know what he's trying to say and the contents of this woeful read even more muddled). On top of that, some of the cinematic plotlines references are completely incorrect. Overall this is a painful excuse for a book that seems to be the manifestation of the author's difficulty in rationalising his own sexuality. All rather sad really. Please don't waste your time reading it.

The Hairstons: An American Family in Black and White, by Henry Wiencek

The Hairstons are extraordinary families, both black and white, who share a complex and compelling history that embodies the legacy of slavery and shows how that legacy has passed into our own time.

Opening at the remote North Carolina plantation of Cooleemee, The Hairstons reads like a gothic tale filled with vexing mysteries. In an attempt to resolve those mysteries, Henry Wiencek crisscrossed the old plantation country in Virginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi, seeking out Hairston descendants and immersing himself in the musty archives of plantations and courthouses. The result is a richly textured portrait of seven generations that examines the ambiguities of slavery and its painful aftermath.

The black family's story traces the triumphant rise of a remarkable people--the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of slaves--who took their rightful place in mainstream America. They are people who tilled the land, built schools and churches, fought for civil rights, and shed their blood in war.

In contrast, it was the fate of the white family, once one of the wealthiest in America, to endure the decline and fall of the Old South. At the heart of their experience lies the story of a lost child. Wiencek's search for the true account of her life peels away layers of lies and myth to reveal a tale the slaveholders and their descendants had kept hidden for almost a century and a half. Surprisingly, it was a tale not of horror, but rather of love and heroism powerful enough to shake the foundation myth of the Old South.

The Hairstons ultimately addresses the universal human struggle to come to terms with the past, and offers a parable of redemption, one that may in the end serve as a vital contribution to our nation's attempt to undo the twisted historical legacy of the past.

Amazon.com Review
The Hairstons traces the complex lineage and fascinating legacy of one of America's largest families. Henry Wiencek explores the lives of black and white members of the Hairston clan, as they have accepted each other as one family, easing the historical divide between the races, and reveals how Southern families have been affected by slavery's legacy and by the burden it continues to carry. Visiting family reunions, interviewing family members, and exploring old plantations, Wiencek combs the far-reaching branches of the Hairston family tree to gather anecdotes from members about their ancestors and piece together a family history that involves the experiences of both plantation owners and their slaves. He expertly weaves the Hairstons' stories from all sides of historical events like slave emancipation, Reconstruction, school segregation, and lynching. For example, from a black Hairston, Wiencek learns of a slave who burned rail fences to cook a hog for his starving comrades; white Hairstons record the incident as an act of slave indolence, a way to hinder the next day's work.

As Wiencek tells the stories of individual Hairstons, he uncovers the layers of a shared history at times painful, shameful, extraordinary, and joyful. Beautifully describing the land of the South and faithfully recounting what he has been told, Wiencek testifies that he "heard history not as a historian would write it but as a novelist would imagine it." The dynamic stories in The Hairstons are not solely one family's legacy but a record that reflects America's complicated process of healing and understanding the mark of slavery. --Amy Wan

From Publishers Weekly
Covering similar ground as Edward Ball's National Book Award-winning Slaves in the Family, Wiencek steps gracefully through the intricate web that links two family trees, one white and one black. Because it's not his own family history he explores, Wiencek doesn't labor under the burden of personal moral accountability that made Ball's book so powerful. He intends his book as a national "parable of redemption"?and he succeeds, admirably, in presenting the Hairstons as a metaphor for the nation while also presenting the specificity of their history, which he learned by traveling through three Southern states in search of interviews and courthouse records. He attempts a balance between the two stories over centuries of ignored heritage and denied kin. At one point, the founding Hairston family owned several plantations and hundreds of slave families over three states. Master Peter Hairston and his former slave Thomas Harston fought on opposite sides in the Civil War, and "the success of one brought the other low." As Wiencek follows the Hairstons from Reconstruction through the civil rights era, he paints a picture of the declining fortunes of the descendants of the slave master and the rise and wisdom of the descendants of the slaves. And yet the name itself is treasured among both family branches, and some of the white descendants can't resist the desire to make contact with the other branch. Commonalities emerge among black and white Hairstons; earnest, if partial, gestures of reconciliation are made. Throughout, Wiencek writes without sentimentality but with great feeling. "I heard history," he writes, "not as a historian would write it but as a novelist would imagine it.... I felt all the moral confusion of a spy." Maps, photographs and extended family trees not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
This profile of the Hairstons, a large family of planters and slaves spreading from Virginia and North Carolina to Mississippi, examines the intricate situations forged by interracial relationships and reveals the fate of the family in the crucible of war, emancipation, and the struggle for equality. Journalist Wiencek's conversational narrative, based both on archival research and a series of encounters with family members, highlights the contingent construction of historical accounts while revealing the complex and contradictory beliefs and emotions that characterized these tangled relationships, filled with guilt, anger, and ultimately forgiveness without absolution. The result is a voyage of discovery down the stream of history. Wiencek reminds us that no such story, especially one as compelling as this, can be rendered simply in terms of black and white. Recommended for most libraries.

An excellent book and truly explains the history of The Hairstons ...
By Maria Marson
An excellent book and truly explains the history of The Hairstons which is part of America's history. What began in the deplorable conditions of slavery, Jim Crow, and beyond ends on a note of triumph and hope not only for the Hairstons but for all of America in our quest for a free, just, and color blind nation.

Just as good, if not better, than Ball's book
By Dave Schwinghammer
Readers reluctant to read THE HAIRSTONS because of its similarity to Edward Ball's SLAVES IN THE FAMILY should not be dissuaded. In some ways, this is a better book.

The author Henry Wiencek provides a sometimes confusing family tree of both white and black Hairstons. Once you get used to it, you will find yourself paging back and forth trying to find the Hairston Wiencek is talking about. What I found most fascinating was how the Hairstons kept the plantations in the family. For instance, "Saura Town Peter" Hairston arranged for his daughter Ruth to marry his nephew Robert after her first husband, Peter Wilson, died young. This usually worked, but in this instance, Robert, who wanted to free his slaves against Peter's daughter's wishes, left his family. He established another Hairston dynasty in Mississippi.

When Wiencek tells us about Robert and his heirs, the book becomes fascinating. Robert fell in love with one of his slaves, having a daughter with her. When he died, he left his plantations to the daughter, Chrillis. The other Hairstons, some of whom had followed Robert to Mississippi, fought the will, and when that didn't work they transferred Chrillis to another plantation, telling the judge she had died. Wiencek tracks down Chrillis, and she's not the only former slave he's able to ferret out. Once again "Saura Town Peter" enters the picture. Wiencek contends that "Saura Town Peter" had another family with one of his slaves, Sally Blag. At a reunion of the black Hairstons, Wiencek meets Joseph Henry Hairston. Joseph knows he had a white ancestor but is unable to trace any further back than a slave named Elias. Wiencek is able to find strong circumstantial evidence that "Saura Town Peter" may have been the Joseph's white ancestor.

Joseph Henry Hairston is a remarkable man. He works his way up from sharecropper to army officer to lawyer for the federal government. Joseph and Judge Peter Wilson Hairston, the present owner of Cooleemee Plantation on the Yadkin River in North Carolina, are the central protagonists in the book. Judge Peter opens his archives to Wiencek and helps him all he can to write this book, although he's worried what Wiencek may say. The white Hairstons insist that their family was kind to their slaves. Judge Peter's worst fears come true when Wiencek shows the Judge's grandfather selling Robert Hairston's slaves down the river.

There is reconciliation at the end, however, as Judge Peter opens Cooleemee to the black Hairstons and the black Hairstons embrace their heritage no matter how cruel some of the Hairston ancestors and overseers were to their people.

Better than Ed Ball's "Slaves in the Family"
By D. C. Carrad
All right, let's sum up:
1. Yes, the author is biased against the white people in this fascinating story. But he is candid enough to admit it and those instances when this prejudice appear are easy to identify and thus deal with on the part of an alert reader. Why the author thinks you cannot love your grandfather and respect his accomplishments even though he was flawed (as all human beings are) is a great mystery. Why he thinks sins are inherited is even more mystifying.
2. Yes, the family trees are confusing but the anecdotes are great
3. Well-written.
4. Written by a Yankee, yes, but one with a fascination for the South.
Summation: This book has flaws but it is still well worth reading and much better than Slaves in the Family or Confederates in the Attic

Championship Tactics: How Anyone Can Sail Faster, Smarter, and Win Races, by Gary L. Jobson, Tom Whidden, Adam Loory

Championship Tactics is the tactical manual for the racing sailor. This comprehensive volume contains lessons from decades of world-class competition.

Gary Jobson was a collegiate champion and raced in three America's Cup campaigns, twice as Ted Turner's tactician and once with Tom Blackaller. Tom Whidden called the tactics in three of the America's Cup matches he sailed with Dennis Conner. Now the authors have put experience gained at the top in a format that racers of single-handed dinghies or maxi boats can use.

Championship Tactics melds expert advice with a rich collection of anecdotes from the greatest races of our time. The book also contains well-diagrammed professional secrets (there are over 150 illustrations) that even the Wednesday-night club racer will enjoy.

Topics include: starts and finishes; upwind, reaching, and downwind legs; mark roundings; steering; handling varied winds and waves; boat speed; tactical electronic instruments; the psychology of racing; key racing rules; and protests. "Local knowledge" of racing conditions from Long Beach to Long Island has been gleaned from a survey of regional experts. The book also covers how to gather vital information on conditions before a race, and how to record what you've learned.

The result is the most complete guide of its kind, by sailors ideally equipped to reveal state-of-the-art techniques.

LOTS OF REALLY GOOD STUFF IN HERE!
By Conrad B.
.

I think my review title says it all. I tried to come up with a way of summarizing the material in this 350 page book, and couldn't. There was too much!

Jobson and Whidden, two world class sailors, packed each chapter full of information--well may not the first chapter--that was short. But the rest of them were long, detailed and packed to the gills with important information.

If you race and don't read this book, you will probably not do as well as someone who has read the book. It is that simple.

This book is for aspiring racers who want to improve their standings in the fabulous sport of sailboat racing. Are you ready to race and win? Are you ready to learn?

What I liked best about the book was its organization. Look at the index below and you will get a hint of what I mean. But you will have to buy the book or thumb through it to really understand what I mean.

I liked the emphasis on teamwork, communication, and leadership, which I find under-emphasized in other books I've read.

Great information is provided on the winds in different parts of the country. Read the section on your sailing area and any place you race.

This is not a one night read of a book. Plan on spending lots of time with this book reading it, and re-reading, and applying it to improve your on the race course performance.

A wealth of useful information; not always easily readable.
By A Customer
This book has a huge amount of useful information for the racing sailor - tips, tactics, strategies, execution, etc. It does assume some prior knowledge, which I didn't always have when I read it, and it is not always as clear or readable as it could be - some sections, I had to read 3 or 4 times before I understood them. It's a great book, though, and does concentrate on tactics, as the title suggests. There are also tips on boatspeed, sail trim, crew psychology, etc. It's intelligently broken down into sections - pre-start, starting tactics, the reach, the run, finishing, etc. I highly recommend it - just be prepared to work at it a little bit, once in a while.

Great stuff
By A Customer
This is a great reference book for any racing enthusiast. It is not really the type of book that you can sit down and read cover to cover, but rather allows the reader to consult a number of topics in the order that they choose. It is an excellent source for the fundamentals of advanced racing (if that makes any sense). Reads very easily, but there is a lot of stuff in here to absorb. I highly recommend this, it should be in every racer's home library.

Castles Made of Sand: A Century of Anglo-American Espionage and Intervention in the Middle East, by Andre Gerolymatos

With roots in imperialism and the nineteenth-century mindset of the "Great Game," Western nations have waged an intricate spy game this past century to establish control over the Middle East, secure access to key resources and regions of commerce, and prevent the spread of Soviet communism into the region. From the Suez Canal to the former Ottoman Empire, British and American intelligence communities have conspired to topple regimes and initiate Muslim leaders as pawns in a geopolitical chess game fought against Marxist expansion.

Yet while the Iron Curtain was doomed to fall near the end of the twentieth century, this pattern of tunnel vision has created a different monster. The resulting resurgence of Muslim radicalism, and the induction of Arabs and other Muslims into the dark arts of espionage and sabotage, have only served to fan the flames in an already incendiary region and deepen the tensions between the Middle East and the West today.

An authority on international studies and the history of guerilla warfare, André Gerolymatos offers the contemporary reader insight into the intelligence game that is still waged internationally with lethal intent, and into the Middle Eastern terrorist networks that had evolved over the decades. In this definitive account of covert operations in the Middle East, the author brings to life the extraordinary men and women whose successes and failures have shaped relations, and he reveals how the explosive nature of the region today has direct roots in the history of American and Western intervention.

From Publishers Weekly
Gerolymatos (Red Acropolis), a historian at Simon Fraser University, explores the problematic nexus of British and U.S. espionage and diplomacy in the Middle East in this provocative history. Surveying a century of Anglo-American efforts to secure political and economic interests in the region--primarily through the spy craft of Britain's MI6 and America's CIA--the author finds a dismal pattern of policy "held hostage by ephemeral notions and self-delusion." Following the collapse of the Ottoman caliphate after WWI, first the British and later the Americans sought security by "supporting Islamic militancy--including such groups as Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood-- as a counterweight to nationalism and later communism." If the policies were ad hoc, the results were often unintended. Anglo-American support for Islamic extremists inadvertently "stimulated forces that... ultimately spun out of control." The Soviet Union was defeated, but "the new threat to the Middle East would be seen to be the rapidly expanding influence of political Islam." Extensively researched--with detailed source notes and an expansive bibliography--and cogently argued, Gerolymatos's study of diplomacy by espionage is timely and instructive.

Western Roots of Contemporary Muslim Radicalism
By Graham E. Fuller
A fascinating and important read for anyone interested in the Middle East and great power politics. Andre Gerolymatos's book illuminates the dark and little known subversive underside of British and American involvement in the Muslim world over nearly a century. While some of this material has been treated elsewhere as well, the book presents a broad panoply of the deeper roots of Western imperialism as exercised through intelligence operations in the Middle East.
Vital for anyone who wants to understand why "history did not begin with 9/11" and the dimensions of the poisonous Western legacy that must be overcome if stability is ever to come to the region.

Graham E. Fuller, former vice-chair of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA and author of "The Future of Political Islam" and "A World Without Islam."

Both fascinating and engaging
By Andrew Blenheim
This book is a penetrating account of American and British intelligence as well as interventions in the Middle East. It certainly helped me understand how we got to the current state of affairs in the Middle East and origins of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. The story that unfolds offers the reader a unique synthesis of the role of Anglo-American intelligence in the region but also an insight into some of the personalities who shaped the course of the modern Middle East and the complex situation in the Pakistan and Afghanistan. Although superbly documented, Gerolymatos' story telling is both fascinating and engaging. I strongly recommend it.

Quite a disappointment
By Paul Gelman
If you think that new things can be learnt from this book you will be disappointed. The first half of the book barely discusses intelligence matters and more about the history of the clash between the Muslim world and the Western powers in the Middle East.
The second half has more material on intelligence matters, while the last chapter seems to be odd, since it is about Pakistan which is-if I am not mistaken-not part of the Middle East at all, although there is an explanation for this in the book's introduction.
This book can serve as a good survey for the study of contemporary Islamic terrorism whose roots are to be found in the Middle East.
