From Publishers Weekly
Despite its melodramatic, Perry Mason-like resolution, Klempner's first novel, a legal thriller set in New York City, is deeply satisfying. When the city's police commissioner dies of a massive heart attack during a mugging, the young and homeless perp, Joey Spadafino, is charged with felony murder because the death occurred during a robbery. Dedicated attorney Dean Abernathy is named Joey's public defender and hopes for a plea bargain. But Dean uncovers a number of anomalies in the case and, after some wonderful plot twists, comes across evidence of a widespread conspiracy that bears on the death. Meanwhile, Joey digs in, insisting on a trial and refusing ever more generous plea bargain offers. When Dean's new girlfriend is kidnapped by the conspirators, the lawyer attempts to rescue her in a climactic set piece in which he uses his rock climbing skills in an urban setting. Klempner's metropolis reeks with authentic New York flavor, from cameos by real-life personages to dead-on details of jails, courts and the streets. Dean is an appealingly earnest and honest hero; Joey, though neither nice nor bright, is a riveting figure; Klempner, a New York criminal defense attorney, is a writer to watch.

From Booklist
With this suspenseful thriller, Klempner earns kudos for providing a host of unexpected plot twists and turns and for delivering often arcane and complex legal information in an entertaining manner. When Dean Abernathy, a dedicated, slightly unorthodox criminal defense attorney, agrees to represent the uneducated homeless man accused of fatally mugging the popular New York City police commissioner, it initially appears to be an open-and-shut case. Since Edward Wilson evidently suffered a major coronary during the robbery, Joey Spadafino is indicted on a charge of felony murder. As Joey continues to insist that Wilson was dead before he picked his pockets, Dean begins to suspect that both the district attorney's office and the police department are involved in a labyrinthine cover-up. Teaming up with a comely witness, Dean undertakes a quiet investigation that eventually explodes into a full-scale expose, placing his own life in grave and immediate danger. Realistically set in the courthouse, the jailhouse, and on the street, this tautly woven legal drama features enough action, tension, and romance to appeal to a wide variety of readers. If you are arrested where someone has died: guard your tongue and say nothing.
By Dayle Smith
This rule, applicable in many countries that have adopted the very old felony murder rule, UK, Australia and NZ as some, as well as the USA, is used as a means of converting conduct that does not have 2 separate steps bu, say is about a death that is alleged to be not one to which any of the traditional self defence type arguments apply, has the effect of converting the 2 unconnected offenses (in the intention or motive) sense into murder when many an accused never intended to cause the death of the victim. In states where there is no Criminal Code (eg as in several of the Australian states) all that is required is an unlawful act and a death that results from that act.
This book is an excellent one written by a writer who well understands the effect of such a law.in its impact on the accused. Usually there is no great problem in obtaining a 'confession' to a minor crime and then the police drop the real problem on the accused. By his admission then if a death occurs the accused has gone from being a trespasser to a murderer!

Dark Read... and Hard to Put Down.
By Strong Eagle
This is a story of murder. It's murder because the victim died during the commission of a felony... doesn't matter whether you intended to kill him... he died anyway... hence the name, "Felony Murder".

This is a dark tale of a punk with a long criminal record, corrupt police, and a defense attorney who doesn't realize what he has gotten himself into.

This isn't a fast paced gripper... nevertheless it is hard to put down as the nature of the writing is that we see what is happening before the defense attorney does and it is a must to see if the attorney is going to get it right or wrong.

The writing is mature, the characters developed, and the plot complex. It is absent the artifacts and gotchas found in some crime novels, the kind that make you say, "Why did I bother to read all this way when all he was going to do was make an unbelievable plot change". This one stays consistent.

Intriguing story
By Gecko girl
Interesting characters and story with plenty of twists and turns. I anticipated some of the twists but not the way they were revealed. I would have given 5 stars but the abrupt epilogue left me feeling empty and incomplete. I wanted a few more words.
