In this homemaker's equivalent to The One-Minute Manager, the authors set out a system whereby a month's worth of family dinners can be cooked and frozen in one day, ready to microwave or reheat in a conventional oven whenever needed. Their step-by-step advice on assembling a shopping list, consolidating tasks such as chopping vegetables, grating cheese, browning meat, etc., undoubtedly saves time in making the stews, casseroles, chili and ham loaves with which they illustrate their points. But then the reader has side dishes to consider, as well as the inconvenience of flipping back and forth between what are essentially ho-hum recipes. All in all, this is an unimaginative parry at kitchen efficiency. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternate selections.

This book made me a believer!

I am not a fan of cooking at all and I have a friend I used to work with who mentioned the idea of cooking ahead to me a few years ago. I stumbled across the book on Amazon.com and I thought I would check it out from the library to "test" it first - I did not believe that any book would make my life easier. I have two children two and under and my husband is taking night classes - life is very hectic and dinner was always the hardest time of day because everyone is tired, the children are cranky, decisions have to be made about what to make, perhaps I then had to go to the store (as you can see we are not the plan ahead types!) This book has changed our lives! I love that someone else has mapped out for me what to buy, prepare, cook and freeze! It is still a challenge to find time to cook ahead, and generally I have to split up my cooking time - because "no interruptions" doesn't occur for moms. I feel so proud of my planning and my cooking. The recipes are easy to follow and they are good, wholesome, non-exotic(you can actually find all the ingredients at your local grocery store!) meals that my family likes. My skepticism is gone and I am buying the book today - my library copy has been returned! This will have a permanent place in my kitchen. Make life easier for yourself. Let this book make dinner decisions for you.

A good way to start if you don't like cooking

My daughter gave me this book for Christmas because I don't like to cook but need to restrict sodium and fat and therefore have to cook. I'm 66 yrs old and have been cooking since I was 8. I like the explanation of the process and of how to vary it. I started with the 2-wk low fat series. Since I am now a family of one, I had to cut most of the recipes in half or even thirds. With the help of a photocopy of the master shopping list for that cycle, I had no problem deleting the items for recipes I didn't like and adding items for my own preferences--mainly more fish and vegetarian meals. Even so, I got more than a month's worth of meals, with considerable repetition, which I don't mind. It has also inspired me to measure out baking mixes for both quick breads and my bread machine, also portions for hot cereals that I need to eat for the fiber.
I am now working on refining this technique for another cycle with more heart healthy recipes. It's not the solution for everyone but, with some thought can help both the busy person who has to cook for a family (which I once was) and for others who need to control both their diet and their budget. Warning: this isn't a "money-saving" plan per se. It helps because there is less waste and, with thought, can be more economical.

This is a great book. It's a time saver and since you do a lot of cooking at one time, you have ready to go meals when you need them. I gave it to my grandchildren to put menus together that they like and we went from there. You won't be disappointed!
