The Talksheets came quickly and were in great condition. I am always looking for topics to start my small groups. I have also found that many students are not familiar with the Bible. These are just little tidbits with a lot of meat.

Emma is a winner--a book of enormous charm, full of sharp, often acid, character sketches, memorable scenes, alternately touching and uproariously funny, that linger in the memory--and told in a narrative style so cunningly paced and organized that it is difficult to believe this is really the work of a first-time writer. (We are assured, however, that he is a North Carolina-born graduate student at Oxford, and that this is truly his first book.) It's the story of Gil Freeman, a young aspiring actor just arrived from the Midwest in New York in the mid-'70s, and his progress as a thespian, as well as a lover and friend to a variety of Manhattan denizens of that time and place. Emma Gennaro, from the moment he becomes one of her roommates, is particularly close to Gil's heart: a frenzied, funny, desperate soul whose increasingly real agonies, with drugs and the surrounding society, take her further and further away from him. Nothing is conventional about their relationship; neither can entirely do without the other, yet the only time they consummate their long affection is in an agonizing scene close to the end of the book. There are fragmentary suggestions, at the beginning, middle and end of Gil's story, that it's all being told in safe retrospect, from the perspective of a man if not entirely happy in marriage and fatherhood, at least beyond youthful indiscretions. But the immediacy of his years in New York, in a series of dreadful apartments, mingling with the bohemians and charlatans of the theater, auditioning, conniving, being briefly and ashamedly successful, is overwhelming. The zany flavor of city life has seldom been better caught, and there are set-pieces here, like a party at the loft of a hostess despised by all her guests, an absurd July 4th weekend at the Jersey shore, scenes in a grungy all-night cafe, that leap from the page in their gritty authenticity, their exact ear for dialogue. Barnhardt's only fault is an occasional too-easy blackout, a refusal to take a scene to its ultimate implications for the sake of moving things along. Through a decade of ups and downs and menial jobs, beguilingly neurotic Emma is the lodestone in narrator Gil's life, saving him occasionally from despair, always from boredom. Eventually Gil will make it to Broadway (and to the truth about his acting), Emma will be published, and there will be a consummation of their relationship. By then the energetic irrepressibility of this coming-of-age story, with its realistic flavor of the city, winds down. A promising first novel for its ease and humor alone; almost better in parts (occasionally overly clever) than as a whole.

My all-time favorite book

I am a writer, avid reader and 1st edition book collector. I bought this hefty novel in paperback in '89-'90 when it first came out. Fell absolutely, 'head over heels' IN LOVE with it. I loved everything about it: the characters, the humor, the stories, the setting, the writing. I have never had a book affect me in such a profound, life-altering manner. Once finished, I immediately mailed it off to my best friend/old college roommate, who is a successful actress. She also ADORED it too. (If you've read it, you'd understand why it affected us both, as she was/is an actress, and I, a writer. Both struggling "artist types.") We made a pact, at the time, that neither of us would name a daughter Emma, (which was not a very popular name in 1990) I then ran to my local collectible bookstore and bought a First Edition hard copy. I was that convinced that EMMA WHO SAVED MY LIFE would become an enormous success and Barnhardt would be hailed as the next John Irving, at the very least. I was certain this was a great investment. Further, I even purchased an "uncorrected copy" of the book. That is more difficult to find and more lucrative to own -- especially if the author becomes a success, which I was positive would happen. It never happened. Nevertheless, this is my all-time favorite novel. And I did name my dog Emma, in honor of the book. Our pact did not extend to pets! I cannot recommend a book more highly.

That's just what it was like then

Emma Who Saved My Life is one of the funniest novels I've ever read, and one of the sharpest memoirs of NYC. I was born and raised in that wonderful city, and lived and worked there during the years covered by the story. Borough by borough, the author has the NYC of that time exactly right. One of the reasons I love this book is that it brings me back to the years I spent there.

Jett, a former U.S. ambassador to Mozambique, assesses UN-sponsored peacekeeping since the Cold War and finds it wanting. He argues that vague objectives, inadequate forces, and bureaucratic politics converged to undercut the UN's effectiveness when confronted with civil wars of maddening complexity. Jett's analysis rests largely on a comparison between the failure in Angola and the limited success in Mozambique. This astute choice of cases--two Portuguese colonies that attained independence under similar circumstances--allows Jett to isolate shortcomings specific to the UN and explain why the Angola conflict outstripped the capabilities of UN peacekeepers. Angola's wealth of natural resources, for instance, enabled the combatants to purchase foreign arms in quantity, while superpower backing for the warring factions prolonged the conflict and inhibited negotiation. The relative absence of these factors eased a settlement in Mozambique. Jett concludes that the UN will be underused for peacekeeping in the future. Strongly recommended for academic libraries.

Jett, a former ambassador to Mozambique, examines the lessons learned when the United Nations fails or succeeds in its peacekeeping missions. He chooses the missions in Mozambique and Angola because of the countries' similar histories (both former Portuguese colonies and cold war battlegrounds) but different outcomes. When the UN closed its mission in Angola in 1999 after four years of relative peace, war began almost immediately because factions had used the interim as a time to rearm. In contrast, the five-year mission in Mozambique apparently succeeded. Jett examines the history of the UN, why it undertakes missions, and how success is determined by factors outside of its control--the conflicting parties, outside parties, regional powers, and a country's resources. Jett looks at how the size and scope of missions have changed since the end of the cold war, and how they've become increasingly complex. This is a well-researched and insightful look at a controversial activity, particularly because of recent peacekeeping failures in Bosnia and Somalia. Vanessa Bush

A heavily documented scholarly analysis of the perils of peacekeeping that focuses on the UN's efforts to bring and keep peace in Angola and Mozambique. Jett (Diplomat in Residence/Carter Center) laments the failure of peacekeeping to ``shorten the suffering'' of people who live in regions torn by civil strife rather than providing ``a temporary respite.'' In nine swift chapters he explores the history of the process, identifies its weaknesses and strengths (internal and external), and ends with the grim observation that peacekeeping is most difficult because those involved must often ``kill some people in order to save others.'' In contrasting what he believes is ``one of the UN's biggest successes'' (Mozambique) to one of its most spectacular failures (Angola, where 800,000 have died in an ongoing war), Jett reveals some surprising facts: There are currently 15 operations in progress; because there is no provision for peacekeeping in the UN charter, ``the legal basis for each operation is the mandate given to it; and these ad hoc mandates range from comprehensive to limited, from clear to murky, from conceivable to impossible. He notes that a country's abundance (or dearth) of natural resources can greatly affect the performance of the peacekeepers: Where oil and diamonds are at stake (as in Angola), the parties continue to fight more ferociously than in Mozambique, where control of ``cashew nuts, cotton, and shrimp'' awaits the victor. Jett also recognizes the power of the media to affect missions through the ``CNN effect: When TV stations all over the world telecast images of dead US soldiers dragged through the streets of Mogadishu in 1993, UN peacekeeping operations altered dramatically. At times Jett's text is densethere are many long block quotations and an alphabet soup of acronymsbut his professorial tone seems appropriate to so serious a topic. The new paperback edition of Jett's book updates the analysis of the UN's missions to Mozambique and Angola, and the new introduction addresses the renaissance in peacekeeping that has occurred since the first edition. While this is a scholarly work, originally created as a doctoral dissertation, the subject is pertinent and the writing is readible.
The text is designed to highlight differences in the two missions, one of which has been moderately successful, the other of which was an unmitigated disaster. It identifies three phases: pre-deployment, deployment, and post-deployment, and shows how these differences affected the outcome. It also identifies three groups who must cooperate to create success: the peacekeepers, the target nation, and the surrounding states. The failure in Angola can be traced to all three phases and all three groups. Likewise, the success of the Mozambique mission can also be traced to all three phases and all three groups.
Jett's analysis is superb. The lessons that can be drawn from this work would prove invaluable, if properly implemented in peacekeeping going forward. The necessary changes in the UN and its member nations will be challenging, but knowing they must be made is a good first step. Let us hope the people with the power to set peacekeeping on the right course are reading and remembering this one.

Good Examination of Peacekeeping Problems

This book was, as other reviewers noted, originally a dissertation. So off the top, a prospective reader should know that this is a scholarly piece of work, not a novel. It is a well-written and quite readable work, though.
Ambassador Jett on balance does a good job of outlining why UN peace operations can fail, using the Mozambique and Angola cases to good affect. The work comes across as somewhat ill tempered at times, and is not happy reading if one is a supporter of peace operations. By and large, the arguments and conclusions make sense, in terms of outlining the failures and why they happen. There does not seem to be enough credit given to the successes, and the reforms that have taken place to fix some of what Ambassador Jett discusses.
Those are quibbles, though. The fact is, this book is a must read for those studying conflict resolution, peace operations, or any related field. It is a good read for anyone, given the current news. The book will not provide any potential solutions to the problems noted so well, which is an issue, but at least the reader will gain a good understanding of the problems.

A good analysis by someone who knows what he is writing on

So often and so regrettably, books by diplomats and former diplomats tend to be boring recollections of memoirs, trying to give the author's views on countries and issues of which the authors themselves understood little or nothing. I am thinking, among others, about Nathaniel Davis' book on Allende's Chile, which was at the same time a brilliant self-defence statement denying US intervention in the 1973 coup. In contrast, this book by Christopher Jett, a former US ambassador to Mozambique, is a thorough analysis of events, offering personal views insofar as any author rightly has these, but without becoming a boring recollection of personal stories. Ambassador Jett offers us a rigorous analysis of why peace-keeping succeeded in Mozambique and failed in Angola. It provides excellent material on these two conflicts and the UN intervention there, and on the respective countries and their internal politics. Likewise, the book is also excellent reading, vividly written and captivating - much more than diplomats can usually be. I would recommend this title to anyone studying comparative conflict studies and conflict resolution, or/and the politics of that part of Africa.

Offers insightful perspectives and provokes discussion

Rothenberg puts together an excellent collection of writings addressing issues of class, gender, and race. I have used this for classes in courses addressing social problems and diversity issues with much success. Students enjoy the variety of writing styles and viewpoints and are often anxious to respond. I strongly recommend this as a text and a resource.

Rothenberg and Zinn

A colleague of mine introduced me to this book in 1991 while we were teaching courses in women's issues and human diversity. I have since used this book -- every single edition -- as a required text in human diversity at three major universities. Currently I am teaching in a graduate social work program in a rural setting at a small state university and will be using this text again for the third consecutive year. The students have consistently rated this book highly because of the interesting articles that Ms. Rothenberg has included. They actually enjoy reading the book. The articles are informative, provocative and timeless and give the students an excellent historical context and lens through which they can analyze and understand some of the most burning and divisive contemporary issues. I am reminded of Howard Zinn. I hope Ms. Rothenberg continues to publish this rich material. She tells the true story!

An Outstanding Anthology for Use in College Courses

Rothenberg's book is an excellent resource. I've used it for years and it simply gets better. Many of the authors are people engaged in race, class, and gender struggles as activists, policy-makers, scholars, and cultural workers who are familiar with the issues up close and personal. Unlike the right-in this country that engages in armchair analysis of these issues from overtly ideological perspective they deny and refuse to acknowledge as such, the authors in this anthology provide you with their politics upfront and then with an analysis or description of an issue that is always incisive and grounded in historical and cultural understandings about the multiple systems of domination that are so alive and present in U.S. society. Its diversity and range of perspective challenges you to redefine your approach to the categories of analysis and experience covered.

Chaney, basketball coach at Temple University, imparts to his players the lesson learned along his road out of a black Philadelphia ghetto: playing basketball is the stepstone to education and deliverance from poverty. This sports book weaves his teachings with a pedestrian journal of the Owls' 1989-1990 season, during which Chaney cajoles his players to make "smart" decisions both on the court and off. Although Wartenberg, correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer and New York Times , is credited as the sole author, Chaney's hand is ever present. Hard questions about race and college sports are asked meekly and the murky area of recruiting is barely touched. In the end, a potentially fine story comes off as self-serving propaganda.

Basketball writer Wartenberg spent the 1989-90 season following the Temple University Owls and their successful, eight-year coach, Chaney. The book's title reflects Chaney's philosophy in basketball and life. The coach emphasizes the person within the player, insisting "winning is within you." Wartenberg's book is in much the same vein as John Feinstein's A Season on the Brink ( LJ 11/1/86). But Chaney and Indiana's Bob Knight are different men and coaches, and Wartenberg's narrative makes for a more positive story. Wartenberg uses many of Chaney's exact words, and the reader gets a feel for one of the game's most outspoken critics of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's controversial Proposition 48 (requiring a minimum SAT score for college admission), which Chaney believes has racist overtones. This is an important basketball book. Highly recommended.

If you are arrested where someone has died: guard your tongue and say nothing.

This rule, applicable in many countries that have adopted the very old felony murder rule, UK, Australia and NZ as some, as well as the USA, is used as a means of converting conduct that does not have 2 separate steps bu, say is about a death that is alleged to be not one to which any of the traditional self defence type arguments apply, has the effect of converting the 2 unconnected offenses (in the intention or motive) sense into murder when many an accused never intended to cause the death of the victim. In states where there is no Criminal Code (eg as in several of the Australian states) all that is required is an unlawful act and a death that results from that act.
This book is an excellent one written by a writer who well understands the effect of such a law.in its impact on the accused. Usually there is no great problem in obtaining a 'confession' to a minor crime and then the police drop the real problem on the accused. By his admission then if a death occurs the accused has gone from being a trespasser to a murderer!

Dark Read... and Hard to Put Down.

This is a story of murder. It's murder because the victim died during the commission of a felony... doesn't matter whether you intended to kill him... he died anyway... hence the name, "Felony Murder".

This is a dark tale of a punk with a long criminal record, corrupt police, and a defense attorney who doesn't realize what he has gotten himself into.

This isn't a fast paced gripper... nevertheless it is hard to put down as the nature of the writing is that we see what is happening before the defense attorney does and it is a must to see if the attorney is going to get it right or wrong.

The writing is mature, the characters developed, and the plot complex. It is absent the artifacts and gotchas found in some crime novels, the kind that make you say, "Why did I bother to read all this way when all he was going to do was make an unbelievable plot change". This one stays consistent.

A fine reference book

This sizable book (900+ pages) is not the most up to date production in town (no biography of Garth Brooks here), but if you want a book that gives the history of many famous & not so famous country musicians, then I recommend this.
I can't open it to read about one artists without spending an hour in the book as I get absorbed reading about someone I've never heard of or forgot about.
The biographies are complete. Maybe the discographies are a little bit sketchy & in some cases incomplete or even incorrect, but it is my experience of such reference works that they all miss something out or get something wrong.
I'd certainly recommend this for someone who does want a little (a lot!) more than just what is on country radio at present.

Old-fashioned, but good guide to hick music

A massive book which has in many ways been superceded by other, later works. It's a bit bulky, with a layout which is a bit flat. Still, it includes entries on some artists which other guides may omit; the discographies are a bit suspect, though, particularly when it comes to little things like getting the titles right. You could opt for the newer, sexier country guides, but this one still has something to offer, particularly the longer, more narrative biographical entries.
