The year is 1880, the place San Francisco. Intelligent, outspoken Sarah Woolson is a young woman with a goal and the fortitude to achieve it. She has always dreamed of becoming a lawyer. The trouble is, everyone believes women belong in the home---that it is not only unnatural, but against God's will for them to seek a career.
When Sarah finagles an interview with one of the city's most prestigious law firms, no one thinks she has a prayer of being hired. Except Sarah. Using her brains and a little subterfuge, she not only manages to become the firm's newest (and only female) associate attorney, she also acquires her first client---a lovely young society matron suspected of brutally stabbing to death her wealthy but abusive husband. Sarah is sure of her client's innocence, but the revelation of the woman's secret lover may make that innocence impossible to prove.
When four more victims fall prey to the killer's knife, Sarah fears she has bitten off more than she can chew. Bucking her boorish employer and the judicial system, Sarah finds herself embroiled in shady legal maneuvers, a daring Chinatown raid, and a secret and very scandalous sex club in this irresistible blend of history, romance, and murder.

This promising if melodramatic debut is set in 1880 San Francisco and is narrated by the spirited Sarah Woolson. Educated by her attorney father, Sarah marches into the law firm of one of his associates and demands a job. She gets it, too, and finds herself working on the case of a young widow accused of murdering her older and abusive husband. Contending with the scorn of her male colleagues, Sarah fights for her place in the firm and is soon involved in a heady stew that includes Chinese gangs and child slavery; a club in which gentlemen indulge their most forbidden habits; and other murders that, like the first, involve sexual mutilation. The language tends to the purple, and the local color is laid on thickly; however, the serenely self-assured Sarah, who has a possible love interest in the Scottish colleague she enrages regularly, keeps the reader on her side and turning pages till the end. Stay tuned. GraceAnne DeCandido

An engaging historical mystery story with a real spitfire of a heroine!
By J. P.
I'm glad I happened upon this book in the library, as it ended up being an enjoyable read and a good mystery. The heroine, Sarah Woolson, is a real spitfire and very opinionated; while sometimes annoying, she is for the most part a great lead character - and at times very funny. Her family is very interesting and they are a great addition to the cast of characters. I also loved Robert Campbell, a fellow associate attorney at their firm, a big and loud Scot alway objecting to Sarah's ideas and plans, but then getting involved despite himself. Their bickering and squabbling is often amusing and I'm personally hoping that their relationship develops into a more, umm ... harmonious one, shall we say ;-).
Tallman's writing is very simple and her storytelling straightforward, not that either of these things are bad. One criticism I do have is that sometimes it seemed like she needed a better editor, as you have the same word that would appear twice in one sentence or in two consecutive sentences. May seem like a picky objection, but for me it was noticeable and bothersome.
The mystery itself was very well-done and definitely keeps the reader engaged. You start to develop a theory, which gains shape as additional things are revealed. It is a mystery, though - not blatantly obvious - and has some great twists and turns. Another great aspect of this book is that the historical setting feels very authentic. I look forward to reading the other books in the series!

Book 2 - The Russian Hill Murders (4 stars)

United States, San Francisco - 1880
By Lyn Reese
By evoking her famous lawyer father's name, Sarah Woolson has managed to get one of San Francisco's staid legal offices to reluctantly, and provisionally, accept her as one of their attorneys. She still must struggle to disprove society's view that a woman lacks the nerve and strength of body for such a rigorous profession. It doesn't help that the man who most fascinates her, and who obviously is bound to become a future love interest, seems the most determined to obstruct her efforts to succeed. Feisty Sarah, however, doggedly sets out to prove the innocence of her only client, a society woman accused of her husband's murder. In the process her daring pursuits uncover links between this murder and that of other prominent citizens.
The author, a romance writer new to historical fiction, has ensured that the reader learn about notable San Francisco 1880s events. Much of this information, however, is not smoothly integrated into the story nor integral to the plot development. What is key is her reference to the discrimination against the Chinese brought into the state to lay tracks for the Central Pacific Railroad, the power of California's "big four" (Misters Stanford, Huntington, Crocker and Hopkins), the description of Chinatown tongs and opium dens, the wide spread city graft, and the courageous rescues by Margaret Culbertson of Chinese girls sold into the Chinatown brothels. A small point: The season references are sometimes jarring. The late summer fog is right, but by this time the California poppies are pretty much faded and rain this heavy would be early and rare.
The Historical Note gives credit to Clara Shortridge Flotz, admitted to the California bar in September of 1878, who drafted what became known as "The Woman Lawyer's Bill" which resulted in allowing women to become working attorneys. Also mentioned is Laura De Force Gordon who became the first woman to argue a murder case in San Francisco in 1879. The authors of "City of Angels" (LA 1903), reviewed on this site, also use Shortridge as a role model for their equally feisty lawyer heroine.

THIS BOOK IS A FAST-MOVING, FUN, TERRIFIC HISTORICAL MYSTERY!!!
By Ann Forester
I don't know where Patricia Ann "Bookmark" is coming from. Did she read the same book I did?
MURDER ON NOB HILL is anything but slow-moving and boring. I thought it was a terrific historical novel. Not only did it move FAST, but the author kept me guessing about the identity of the killer until the very end. I've lent this book to lots of my mystery-lover friends, and they all agree with me that Sarah Woolson is the best new mystery character to come along in years! She's intelligent, fun, clever, out-spoken and dedicated to helping the underdog. I don't know how Patricia the "Bookmark" could say she's "spoiled". How can you call someone spoiled who's willing to give their life to make sure you get justice in a court of law? I thought she was anything BUT spoiled! (Sorry, but the "Bookmark's" review really got me fuming.)
I've also read the second book in the series, THE RUSSIAN HILL MURDERS, and I think it's also SUPER! And in the Russian Hill book, Sarah actually goes to court to defend a man accused of murder. I can't wait to read the new Sarah Woolson mystery, hopefully VERY SOON! Keep 'em coming, Shirley! And don't pay any attention to Patricia the "Bookmark". You've got a red-hot mystery series going here.
I forgot to mention that I was born and raised in San Francisco, and lived there until I got married. That's another great thing about Shirley Tallman's Sarah Woolson Series. She's really got the heart of San Francisco down pat! MURDER ON NOB HILL is by far one of the VERY BEST HISTORICAL MYSTERIES I've read in a long, long time!!!
