When Ron and Doretta Johnson bought a former motel in Marion, Indiana, with an asking price of $59,900 for only $24,500 in 1987, they had no suspicions about the place. But soon after they moved into their "dream house," all manner of bizarre events began to occur, including troubles with electric appliances, paint and wallpaper that would not stay on the walls, mysterious fires and noises in the attic. These happenings were a source of special alarm to Doretta, the survivor of a childhood poisoned by a mother who was an alcoholic, a prostitute, a drug addict, masochistic with her many "husbands" and sadistic to her children, to the degree that she witnessed their physical and sexual abuse without interfering. As the paranormal events increased, the couple and their six-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son stayed with relatives periodically but remained under attack even while in others' homes; they sought assistance from a psychic who was of little help and a priest who promised an exorcism but reneged. Finally they got help from parapsychologist William Roll, who believed that Doretta's psyche was projecting all these things into her environment and who showed her how to come to terms with her psychic abilities and the way toward clearing them up, a process that still continues. The book, written with Henderson (coauthor of Pride), will give pause to even the most skeptical about matters psychic. Photos not seen by PW.

The People in the Attic is an excellent true tale of poltergeist activity. A family dream home is shattered by a poltergeist nightmare which consumes eight years of the family's energies. Paranormal activities offer no let-up and finally Doretta becomes convinced she's partly to blame in this engrossing read. -- Midwest Book Review

Different Take on Poltergeists

This was a good book and worth having in your collection if you collect "true" ghost stories. Usually it's a teenager that's connected with the cause of poltergeist activity, but in this book it's a grown woman with alleged latent psychic abilities. The author's story was covered by the old TV series "Sightings" and her case was studied by Parapsychologist William G. Roll who wrote his own book on the study of Poltergeists. (Roll's theories on this case are interesting.) Like any good "true haunting" book, there's plenty of room for disbelief, but pick it up and give it a shot, it's worth the effort and is definitely worth adding to any paranormal book collection.

A New Perspective

This book was a page turner and I couldn't put it down. It was unknown to me that someone with pyschic tendencies and a background of cruelty affliction and abuse could actually be used by unseen forces to project supernatural phenomena. The house this family purchased was in a magnetic infested area because of power lines and had some major issue problems. Wow! I would have been just as overwhelmed and frustrated as Doretta was. I think when you read books with a supernatural theme, you need to be openminded and unjudgmental. Just because you've never experienced these kind of experiences doesn't mean they don't exist. I am glad I don't live in a haunted house after reading this book.

The People in the Attic

I have read the book. Unlike some people, I believe the story written by Doretta Johnson and to be fascinating and true. Some might think I am easily fooled and guilible. But I am a level-headed person and haveread many articles and books on the Paranormal over the last 30 years. Who are we (individuals in general) to question that which we don't completely understand. I grew in a Protestant household and have my head on my shoulders. I think that the fact many individuals have taken photos of spiritual presences which have evaluated and found to not be tampered with and that there are witnesses, and personal accounts proves something. I was very impressed with the courage and that it must have been a cathartic process for Ms. Johnson to write this book. I realize that some individuals who claim to be psychics and who claim to have seen ghosts or felt a spirit presence are not all honesst. However, this woman's life and what she went through, her accounts of premonitions before things happened as well as her grandmother's, appear to be accurate and true.
