If You Buy Only One Tour Book For London...

I've perused dozens of travel books on Great Britain and London in particular. I especially like the "Eyewitness" books by DK but the "Let's Go 2005" is hands down the most inclusive, user-friendly book I've found. I've actually read it from cover to cover because it's so useful. The maps are helpful but the best parts are the descriptions of hotels/sights/restaurants. I really appreciate the web addresses provided for most of the items (so I could access the sites to see what exhibits will be in the museums, check out restaurant's menus, etc.) This is the book I'm taking with me to London next month.

Great book to take with you on your trip

I recently went to London for a week and I took this book with me. I don't know what I would have done without it. It's full of great info from cover to cover and well organized. It was almost like having my own personal tour guide!

That tireless verbivore Richard Lederer is at it again, this time providing, in cahoots with coauthor Richard Dowis, a quick-and-dirty grammar guide. In a time when Sing and Snore Ernie says, "It feels good to lay down," and Columbia University professor Edward Shapiro employs a whom where who is called for (in his book Shakespeare and the Jews), we are clearly in need of Lederer and Dowis to set us straight. In Sleeping Dogs Don't Lay, the authors steer us away from problematic words and phrases (such as Aren't I); remind us of definitions we may have, er, confused (of, say, flotsam and jetsam, podium and lectern, prone and supine); and teach us to use comprise correctly.

But Lederer and Dowis are hardly anachronous sticklers. Their section on grammatical myths advocates the judicious splitting of an infinitive, using a preposition "to end a sentence with," and even, sometimes, embracing clichés. "Different from" is almost always right, they say, but "if your ear tells you otherwise, choose different than." Their "rule" concerning comma use states that "If the addition or omission of a comma makes the meaning clearer, add it or remove it even if doing so seems to violate some other rule." How refreshing it is to encounter grammarians who do not live in a vacuum, who know that "connotations are often more important than definitions, and that the true meaning of a word or phrase is the effect it has on readers." --Jane Steinberg

Mixing humor with rigor, he and coauthor Dowis have created a grammar guide for those who like their split infinitives with a side of laughter. Written in breezy, joke-filled prose and broken up into ten chapters, this work clears up confusing word-usage questions (like the difference between lay and lie), gives out spelling and grammar tips, and clears up old writing myths (they argue, for example, that it is just fine to end a sentence with a preposition). They also supply a selection of grammar games. Those wanting simple and joke-free guidance can always rely upon Strunk and White's irreplaceable Elements of Style (1979). But anyone who finds worrying over where to put a comma burdensome will appreciate Lederer and Dowis's load-lightening work. From the Grammar Goddess: This one is wonderful! Richard Lederer not only still finds humor in our language, he even goes over some of the rules that we all need to know but have forgotten. And he explains how to use which and that about as well as it can be explained. If you want to learn and laugh, pick up this book now!

The authors' descriptions of common pitfalls and their advice on how to avoid making oft-repeated errors are extremely helpful, and the good humor and high spirits make the much-needed lessons all the more memorable. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to treat the language with the knowledge and respect it deserves.

Lost Your Sense of Humor about Writing?

This one will put some fun back into your labors! English has become the language of commerce & computers all around the world, & it behoves us to not only become fluent, we also need to put our words in order & avoid inter-cultural confusion with worn out cliches - in short we had better get better at writing & speaking our mother tongue.
So you're confused about _irregardless_ or _literally_ - do you really mean cats & dogs were dropping from the sky? Or _unique_ - neither more nor less, it simply is! What about _viable_ - what do you think it means? Well, it doesn't!
Lederer & Dowis bring to bear their playful & instructive wit on such elusive fundamentals as the syntax, the apostrophe, transitive verbs, the common comma & the myriad errors to which we fall heir.
With mnemonic devices(look it up!), frequent reminders to get a dictionary & use it, together with important advice on how to monitor ourselves before we hit that Send key & slather our deranged & idiomatic(not idiotic!) versions over the broadband, this witty & useful guide could become every harried writer's best friend.
These two fellows have made re-learning our language fun! I'm reading along, getting more & more confused, when, BAM! They add a fillip that opens my eyes & rattles my brain.

Not Detailed Enough To Help Learn How To Make New Friends

I agree with reviewer that said this is a nice little REMINDER about how we can be better friends -
e.g.: Listen before you speak, empathize, and so on....
but I don't believe this book is an actual tool for helping you Make New Friends.

I also completely agree and was also frustrated with the reiteration of tips. It really is 35 tips stretched out to seem like 70 tips for the purpose of filling the pages of a book.

If you are looking for tips on how to make new friends in environments where you don't know a soul, or if you are looking to learn the art of approaching people and engaging them in conversation, and how to keep that conversation interesting, etc, this is not the book for you.

I could write a similar book for teenagers called "The Art of Learning to Drive" and tell them that Rule #1 is "When the light turns green, you go...." Oooh, and I bet you can guess what Rule #2 would be. Never mind providing the details about those pedals down on the floor of the vehicle and that the one on the left is the brake and the one on the right is the gas. A book that claims to provide some instructional assistance needs to have a certain degree of detail. You will not find that detail in this book.

I would highly recommend "The Art of Mingling" by Jeanne Martinet. Even if you don't want to become an expert on mingling, this author provides some really wonderful insight, suggestions and methods for approaching people that you don't know, great conversation starters, how to approach groups of people, and even how to get out of a conversation that is not going well. I think the tips in "The Art of Mingling" are all invaluable tools for making new friends.

RULE #71 - SHARE THIS BOOK

In the short time of applying a handful of these rules in my friendships, I have come to realize how easy it is to make even the most long-standing friendships more profound and interesting. What I loved most of The Art of Friendship is appreciating that we can always make room for new and different relationships. Friendship is about making the simplest of efforts. And with 70 of these efforts now easily outlined for everyone, one can only imagine how the world might become a better place thanks to it being filled with better friends!

Great ideas for helping you to meet and make friends

I'm so glad that I came across THE ART OF FRIENDSHIP by Roger Horchow and Sally Horchow before
my upcoming move to Asheville, North Carolina.

Knowing virtually nobody there, I'm somewhat apprehensive about
how to go about meeting new folks . . . yet the authors seem
to have made it simple for me by presenting--to quote the subtitle--70
SIMPLE RULES FOR MAKING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS.

For example, here's one idea that I had never thought about:

* Host a party for your good friends and ask each of your guests to bring
one person that you don't know.

I then got a kick out of this suggestion for dealing with the problem
of forgetting somebody's name:

* Say, "Nice to see you" rather than "Nice to meet you." No one wants
to think they were so completely forgettable that you've blanked out
the first meeting.

Lastly, there was this useful suggestion for avoiding banalities that
get you nowhere in a conversation:

* Unless you are a meteorologist or a farmer, there is usually nothing
vitally interesting in a discussion of the weather. . . . Your goal is
to learn about the person you are talking to, not make empty noise.

I strongly recommend THE ART OF FRIENDSHIP to anybody
interested in making or meeting new friends--even if you think
you already have more than enough . . . by chance, even if you fall into the
latter category, you'll be pleasantly surprised to pick up some new
techniques that will help you strengthen existing friendships.

In 1990, a group of scientists met to discuss the disappearance or decline of amphibians, particularly frogs and toads. Though they could not agree on how to proceed, some field biologists pursued the matter independently. Enter journalist Phillips, who would follow the story for the next three years, interviewing scientists and accompanying them on field trips to search for frogs. She has written an engrossing account of attempts to solve the mystery. Primary causes of the amphibian decline appear to be acid rain, ultraviolet radiation and drought. Other causes are habitat destruction by over-grazing and logging, off-road vehicles, dams and introduction of nonnative, predatory fish. The endangered creatures Phillips is concerned with are amphibians, a far less sexy group than, say, wolves or eagles. Frogs and toads are hardly majestic, or even huggable; they're slimy, warty, and, to some, even repulsive, but they've been around for 350 million years and are an integral part of many ecosystems. Amphibians are also extremely vulnerable to environmental change, so vulnerable, in fact, that they are now considered to be "bioindicators," like canaries in a mine. And they're disappearing from the wetlands and woods of California, Louisiana, Florida, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Australia, France, and India. Phillips accompanies a number of herpetologists in the field as they try to identify the causes of this alarming decline. Along the way, she acquaints us with frog life, the ecological and scientific value of frogs, and the disturbing realities of the unregulated international frog trade (for food or pets). All evidence and hypotheses point to human activity as the culprit, specifically water and air pollution, and the corresponding rapid changes in the world's weather patterns. A probing exploration of the mysteriously rapid disappearance of many amphibian species--with disturbing portents for the wider ecological picture. Phillips is a pleasing science writer (Omni, Discover) who draws us into this warty topic with a touching boy-finds-frog story as told by an adult scientist she is working with. In 1960, the boy inadvertently killed his foothill yellow-legged frog by feeding it a pesticide-poisoned moth; ten years later no more of the frogs (Rana boylii) could be found in Southern California. This absence is far from a local ecological debacle: Scientists now realize that many species of one of Earth's oldest creatures are disappearing all over the globe. The little-known mystery that Phillips records got a public jolt when the celebrated Costa Rican golden tree-frogs (only discovered in 1967) vanished. Given glimpses of a scientist's field notes (``to view the golden toads breeding is like seeing the northern lights''), we begin to realize what natural grandeur has been lost. That grandeur is in the details of how frogs live, breed, and eat--members of one species, now extinct, turned their stomachs into hatcheries and vomited out their young. This species offered new ways to treat ulcers, while the alkaloids extracted from some poisonous frogs can fight malaria, cancer, and pain. When not being trampled by hikers and bikers, frogs are being pickled by herpetologists and suffocated by pet and food shippers. The widespread declines, however, are linked here to more serious human crimes. Phillips takes us from scientific conferences to once pristine wetlands devastated by ultraviolet radiation (via the thinning ozone layer), greenhouse gases, acid rain, and other pollutants that combine with encroaching pasturage and construction to destroy amphibian habitats. ``Declining amphibians are like miner's canaries,'' writes Phillips, who shares her ``enchantment'' for the song of the pond and compels us to listen to its silence. Fantastic! Well researched and written!

This is a facinating and gripping tale about an animal that is simple, slimey, and generally not well thought of by humans. Our desensitivity to the legitimate role in our world of reptiles and amphibians (from the bible to the Sound of Music) has left them without an advocate when they need it most. Kathryn Phillips explains why their loss is anything but insignificant.
In the old days, coal miners would take a canary into the mines with them and listen to it sing all day. If the canary stopped singing and fell over dead, the miners didn't stop to wonder why or grieve its passing, they got the heck out of the mine as fast as they could. That was the very reason they took the canary in with them. Frogs are the canaries on this earth. But here on earth, we don't have the easy option of just getting the heck out of here as fast as we can. Kathryn Phillips tells you why with the power of a fiction writer but does it as only a professional journalist could with clarity, accuracy and completeness.

Great book-highly recommended

This is a wonderful book which has covers the current issue of declining amphibian populations well in regards to the pet trade, habitat loss and fragmentation, and exotic species as well as specific species such as the golden toad and california's red-legged frog. Its an adventure as well as a source of information. The only reservation I had was that it didn't cover chemicals (pesticides) or frog deformities as issues towards species loss.

Because women as a rule have greater endurance than men, the best female triathletes are better than all but the top men. The author of this uneven book, himself a triathlete, follows four women through the 1989 season, ending with the Hawaiian Ironman, which demands almost superhuman abilities with its 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike leg and 26.2-mile run. Cook provides delightful anecdotes about the contestants: self-righteous, aggressively Christian Kirsten Hanssen; earthy Paula Newby-Fraser; Jan Ripple, half southern belle, half wrecking ball; and quietly determined Julie Wilson. His long passages on physiology and the construction of bicycles, however, will not interest general readers. Still, he paints a well-rounded portrait of the triathletes, who, he reports, now number 1.2 million worldwide, dispelling the popular image of them as a splinter group of not-quite-rational masochists. Cook covers the lives of four women competing in the 1989 triathlon season, a sporting event that features 140 miles of swimming, cycling, and running. The season culminates in the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, one of the most grueling events in sports. It features back-to-back competitions that include a 2.4-mile swim, a bike race of approximately 112 miles, and a 26.2-mile run. Cook chooses to write about four very different female competitors in the sport: Kirsten Hanssen, Jan Ripple, Paula Newby-Fraser, and Julie Wilson. He relates their personal stories as well as their athletic accomplishments. The reader obtains real insight into the various personalities and training methods that different competitors use. These stories also illuminate how little support and encouragement women receive, even at the top competitive level of athletics. The book is informative and fascinating and contains some stories of sheer human drama.

If you are in any way into endurance sports....

I love this book. I was amazed to learn it is out of print. Jeff Cook does an amazing job of taking you inside the life and minds of the greatest athletes in the world. If you are looking for inspiration or motivation of the athletic sort, read this book. I was awestruck at Jeff's ability to extract the emotion and intensity of these athletes. This book was part of an Olympic display at my local library, at the time I was training for my first marathon and thought it would be a great way to boost my motivation, boy did it ever. I found myself having to find seats on the train to work that were out of the way due to my constant tearing, it is that good. I have never competed in a triathlon but since the reading of this book have purchased 3 Ironman videos (I'm addicted) and one day plan to do one. If you are in any way into endurance sports and love to read stories about those who push the body to the physical limit, this one's for you!

I loved the book and felt Jeff Cook did a wonderful job in details,emotions, and the true meaning of women triathletes. As a triathlete myself I have read this book many times and always feel like I could read it again. Very inspirational.

I didn't know I was interested in triatheletes until I read this book. Jeff Cook makes these women come alive and I found myself caring about what happened to them and better understanding the mind of an athelete and the incredible effort and dedication that is required to accomplish these feats. Although I am not particularly motivated to participate in a triathalon, it has inspired me to think about going beyond what I consider my limitations in anything I do. To live fully and work to attain excellence in all parts of my life.
