Roberts, who plays Marie Barone on the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, uses her TV character's preoccupation with food to underscore her own needs in this memoir. Her autobiography isn't a sexy tell-all, but it's honest and life-affirming. Roberts was desperate for love and attention. What she got was a hardscrabble childhood, two tough marriages and a career she adored. She repeats her mantra-"I am a survivor"-throughout the book, along with her recipes. These delectable treats-lasagna, chicken crepes, flourless chocolate cake-match moods or milestones in her life. It's a cute, though not innovative, way of breaking up her tale. Roberts's dad left at her birth, her indifferent grandparents raised her in the Bronx, and her mother never paid her a compliment. Still, by age 11, she decided to be an actress, and she got some terrific breaks, due as much to talent as tenacity. That she pursued her dreams while raising a son is laudable, especially with little help from her family. A hardworking actress fond of peppering her prose with homilies (e.g., "If you want life to surprise you, you've got to be open to it rather than defending against it"), Roberts saves the best part of her saga-the early years, the struggle, the triumphs-for the last third of the book. Still, readers will applaud her victories, even if the recounting is less than stellar.

Loved this book!

This is one of the best auto-biographies I have ever read. I just recently learned about Doris' book and am thrilled to have found it. She writes like she is talking to her best friend, with a great sense of humor. She's a quick-witted smart lady who knew where she wanted to go in life and followed through. For a plus, she includes a great recipe with each chapter; I will be making a few of them. I could hardly put the book down! If you're a big fan of Doris, this is a must read for you! It's a great book! Thanks, Doris!

The recipes are excellent, and the stories here and there are interesting and build to give a glimpse into the childhood and life of the late Doris Roberts. Recommended.

Couldn't Put It Down

Doris Roberts is endearing in this very straightforward book about her life, including who she has known in the New York Theatre scene. She has a full theatrical history and has known and interacted with many New York City actors. She includes her time on the "Everyone Loves Raymond" TV Series, but she tells us about her beginnings also. I loved reading this book. I did not anticipate such a good read. Also: the bonus is a recipe at the end of each chapter, yes, including Steak Pizzaolla! (The one recipe she was reluctant to give Debra, in the show).

Richard Burt is Professor of English and Film and Media Studies, University of Florida. He is the author of Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares: Queer Theory and American Kiddie Culture; Licensed by Authority: Ben Jonson and the Discourses of Censorship; and the editor of Shakespeare After Shakespeare; Shakespeare After Mass Media; and The Administration of Aesthetics. Burt also co-edited a special issue of Exemplaria on “Movie Medievalism” and held a Fulbright scholarship in Berlin, Germany from 1995–96.

Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares addresses the use of Shakespeare in American popular culture, especially film. Richard Burt is particularly interested in the way Shakespeare is rewritten or repositioned in teen movies, cult cinema and pornographic films. Shakespeare is either a covert presence as in 10 Things I Hate About You, or is foregrounded through mis/quotation to illustrate a character's status as cool or nerdy, as in Clueless or Never Been Kissed.
Richard Burt's ideas on the loser and kiddie culture underpin his investigation of Shakespeare at the periphery of American popular culture. Academic scholarship has been slow to address these rewritings and appropriations of the playwright and his work up until now.
However, one of the many joys of reading Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares is to discover just how accessible it is to scholars and non-scholars alike. Dr. Burt's playful ruminations upon the intellectual winner as a loser figure and vice versa is both entertaining and startlingly poignant. Finally, Unspeakable ShaXXXpeares is a book which opens the way for further exploration of Shakespaeare's multi-faceted presence in the mass media.

Professor Richard Burt of UMass-Amherst has produced an excellent demonstration of his own theory of looser-criticism, which perfectly captures the most useful trends in literary studies. Bungee-jumping off of the tip of the ivory tower, Burt thrusts forcefully into the depths of pop-culture, kiddie-culture, hard-core porno and the rest of what is most dynamic and influential in contemporary American culture. Reveling the velvety folds of Americana, Burt finds (gasp, choke) Shakespeare, alive, well and living in da hood. His erudite, fearless and shameless investigation explains both the continuing relevance Shakespeare's work, and the significance of Shakespeare as a pop icon, in (apparently) ALL facets of US culture. By rights this intervention ought to make Burt, a man who constantly promotes his own fascination with celebrity, a media celebrity himself (next on Springer: "You read my book, bitch!"). This is a volume that must be read by all who profess a serious interest in Shakespeare and/or popular culture. And therefore never send to know for whom the porn was made - it was made for thee. Word.

Burt's book's a stunner

Combining glittery high theory with `low' culture materials, Richard Burt has written an absolutely brilliant, path-breaking study of Shakespeare in contemporary mass media, focusing mostly on film, but discussing t.v. sit-coms, comic books, and novels as well. Most of these films and other texts have never before been archived or examined by any other Shakespeare critic. What is particularly original about Burt's book is the way he views what he concedes are often trashy films, including some hardcore pornographic adaptations, from the vantage point of the critic as loser. Instead of trying to redeem mass culture `trash' as politically dissident, transgressive, or subversive material, as most critics doing cultural studies now do, Burt questions whether the trashy material he examines can be recycled, and opens up as a profound, troubling question whether criticism (avowedly political or not, high-minded or low-minded) can ever fully transcend questions concerning its own potential triviality and stupidity. This is a very sophisticated and challenging book, but is very accessible and very entertaining. Burt will soon emerge as the Stephan Greenblatt of post-millenial Shakespeare criticism. His book is a truly remarkable read!

A Fun Summer Read
By Guiding Light's Biggest Fan
I am a long-time Guiding Light viewer and have just finished reading Lorelei's Guiding Light: An Intimate Diary. I found it to be a very enjoyable, interesting, and sexy. It's the perfect beach read and provides plenty of insight into the Lorelei Hills character (or as we learned, personality of Beth Raines). The conclusion the show had for the storyline was, in my opinion, too fast-paced and did not provide us viewers with the closure we needed. However, this very revealing book did just that. Beth Chamberlin proves by writing this book that she is not just another pretty soap opera face, rather an intelligent, gifted writer with an honest understanding of her character. I would recommend this book to all watchers of Guiding Light with even the slightest interesting in Lorelei Hills.

Couldn't Put It Down

On the soap opera Guiding Light, we learned in August 2001 that beloved Beth Raines had been swept away in a flash flood. She was down in Mexico getting a divorce from Edmund Winslow, the wrong guy who controlled her. This decision came after she was imprisoned in a tower at the castle in San Cristobel, and fell to make her escape. After narrowly escaping she fled the hospital to get a divorce, and Edmund followed her to get his fortunes from her, having her kidnapped and forced to sign papers which would entitle him to a share in her fortune. She was near the bank of a river when Edmund told her to get up, for all her life she'd been doing what men had told her to do, so she took a stand and said no, and she was swept away in a flood, and presumed dead.
When Beth returned, she was Lorelei, a very different person. Beth suffered from multiple personalities. This book shares the backstory of what happened to Beth in her three months she was missing, what she was doing as Lorelei, as she was trying to piece together who she was. It's a very interesting read, I couldn't put this book down. It has everything, romance, gossip, intrigue, mystery, suspense, and more! It's a must have for the die hard Guiding Light fan, or even if you don't watch the show you can enjoy this book as well. The actress Beth Chamberlain wrote this book, and it is an intimate diary with every secret detail, and she has a promising career in writing, she wrote this very well! Overall check this out, its a great addition for the Guiding Light fan or the fan of romance novels. A must read!

About the Author
Russell Bush, former fashion designer turned haut decorator, remains modern in spite of a penchant for the past. Born, raised and schooled in Pennsylvania, he now lives in New York City. He is well traveled, on the path to being well read, and remains elegant despite the extravagant number of books with which he lives. This is the first one he can truly call his own.

Ron Lieberman is an award-winning illustrator, designer, and university educator. His illustrations and logo designs have appeared on Broadway posters, CD covers, book jackets, and in many other he leading magazines in America. Affectionate Men is his first complete book design. He lives and works in New York City.

Beautiful pics, leaves you wanting more

This is what I would call a nice little novelty book--perfectly charming, fascinating historically, but not one I will likely pull out to look at time and time again.
The pictures are indeed fascinating (especially the candid nudes!). However--and in fairness, the author stresses this in the foreword--I would guess that a significant number of these "couples" are not romantically linked in any way. I suspect that they most often simply represent a time when men in our culture (or in European cultures, since many of them are from overseas) thought nothing of touching one another affectionately in public. It actually documents very well that the "manly" refusal of men to hold hands or even to stand with arms around one another, is of more recent vintage, and thus it holds out the hope that maybe the pendulum will swing back. I recommend the book, though. It makes a nice addition to my collection--and the design, by the way, is superb....

Well-designed book makes you wish for more

While this book is well-designed and many of the photographs are lovely and thought-provoking (Are these men friends, brothers, lovers?), you leave it realizing that this is basically one person's collection of old photographs of men together. I bet there are many, many more--and better examples out there that would have made this book memorable.

Unusual and touching

This slim volume of old daguerrotypes, tintypes, and photographs of men together provides a touching reminder of a time when males felt no inhibitions about expressing physical affection for one another and having it documented on film. The men who populate these pages may or may not have been sexual lovers, but their casual embraces and closeness are curiously moving in a time when gay men and women are struggling for acceptance against frequently virulent opposition. The only drawbacks to this volume are its short length and occasionally cutesy artwork, but these should not dissuade any reader from enjoying these images.

Hear That Lonesome Whippoorwill..

This book was published in 1993 and is still available.It is a wonderful 'little' book which lives up to its billing of being Hank's complete lyrics.There may have been a few found since the publication;but it contains the complete words to 130 songs.It would be a treasure to any Hank fan;in fact,no fan should be without it.The setup of the book is impressive in that the songs are organized by the first word in the song's title.ie.,'I Saw the Light' is followed by 'I Told A Lie To My Heart'.It just couldn't be simpler. I find it great to play Hank's songs and follow along with him.Even if you can't sing;crank up the volume,and let 'er rip;Hank will enjoy your accompaniment.
In addition to the songs, Cusic opens the book with 16 pages of Hank's life and lots of information on how he wrote these songs and who he collaborated with and so on.
He also includes a lot of information on books on Hank and other sources of info on country music.In his section 'Permissions' ,he gives the dates the songs were copyrighted and who jointly wrote some of the songs with Hank.
Cusic sums it up with this comment.
"Hank and his songs remain easy to understand,but their effect eludes explanation,and defies duplication.They are the essence of country music."

this is an awsome song lyrics book. the lyrics in this book are just awsome there great. the songs just reach out and grab me by the collar. his songs touch my heart. and shares my heart and soul. there's plenty of song lyrics that many people dont even know about. just take a chance and get this book i promise you wont regret it. hank was truely gifted he had a gift that came striat out of heaven from god to hank and out his voice. and his song writeing as well. so please check it out. thanks don for makeing this book. a fan always kellysherman

Hank wouldn't have understood...

The Complete Lyrics ... it sounded too good to be true, and it was. I wanted to have the lyrics as Hank had sung them. Mr Cusic has "amended" them to be politically correct. Hank (or Luke the Drifter) wouldn't have recognised parts of 'The Funeral' ... "curly hair, protruding lips" clearly offends Mr Cusic's sensibilities so he's rewritten it. I won't bother quoting his PC version here. Having compiled the complete lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers (the Singing Brakeman, not Hank Snow's son) for my own reference they're all how Jimmie sang them. So sad that Mr Cusic thought his lyrics were better (or more socially acceptable) than Hank's originals.

Ever-intelligent horror novelist Monahan (The Blood of the Covenant, 1995, etc.) retells a true story--true as far as the participants knew--about a poltergeist. The book purports to be a recently discovered manuscript written by Richard Powell, an eyewitness of the Bell Witch haunting in Robertson County, Tennessee, 181721. Monahan says that his first skeptical reading of the manuscript led him to six books confirming the authenticity of the events. Indeed, Richard Powell, the long-dead narrator, is himself a skeptic who seems to know all the devices of poltergeists, and in particular how poltergeist activity within a home reflects a family's psychic torment. Poltergeists (racket-makers) do not attack from without but rather are a spiritual pustule erupting from within a deeply troubled household. The poltergeist in this case seemed set on doing away with John Bell, the head of the family, while at the same time gradually evolving a rather homey tie with the other family members that lasted for three years and was witnessed by many. The spirit first showed up as something invisible gnawing nightly on bedposts, raining rocks on the roof, ripping covers off beds, and repeatedly slapping 12-year-old Betsy Bell and pulling her across the floor by her hair. At times the spirit allowed itself to be touched; it gathered news from afar for the family; lectured on theology; sang sweetly in four different voices; and rescued children in trouble. For three years, the spirit joked, lectured, ran off frauds and charlatans, and even nursed Bell's sick wife, producing nuts and berries for the invalid out of thin air. Even so, it afflicted the father with palsy, tics, and neuralgia, and at last watched him die. What produced the poltergeist? It's unfair to reveal here Monahan's reasonable yet supernatural answer. Chilling; the most frightening book I've ever read

"The Bell Witch" is the most frightening book I've ever read. I frequently read books over, but I've read this one twice in six months, loved it enough from the library that I bought my own copy. This book covers two topics that hold great interest for me, and in which I consider myself well read. The first is hauntings. The second I won't reveal here because to do so would spoil the ending of this tale. However, the incidents cited in these pages made me question many of the things I was convinced I knew about both subjects. The book is made more chilling by the introduction. After having read it, and consulting the footnotes throughout the text, there is little doubt in my mind that this - unlike so many similar works - is a fiction. Read "The Bell Witch." Then read it again. And see if you can shake it from your mind.

First Of All, It's A Novel

This book probably intends to confuse you a little- it did me- by purporting to be a newly discovered diary of a known eyewitness to events in the historically-documented "Bell Witch" case. In fact, it's a very good novel. Monahan takes the basic facts (or claims) that we have and fleshes them out artfully, with a narrator, dialogue, and a point of view that work beautifully well. The gripping story takes the horror and suspense genres in a unique direction, and lives up to the incredible source material. A small complaint: he tries to wrap things in a too-neat 1990s package for us at the end- the only false note he strikes here.
The book left me very interested in this case, and my interest increased recently when I discovered close family ties to many of the people depicted here, including Elias and Sugg Fort.

THIS IS ONE BELL THAT DOESN'T RING TRUE!

In THE BELL WITCH: AN AMERICAN HAUNTING, Brent Monahan tells the remarkable story of the only documented poltergeist or spirit haunting to ever result in the death of a human being. True to its purpose, THE BELL WITCH delivers a suspenseful tale of the supernatural that has the mystique of realness - historical documentation corroborates the events described. Monahan delivers plenty of surprises, interesting characters, a couple of gasps and even a few laughs along the way. What is missing, however, is believability - not so much in Monahan's premise or in his ability as a writer, but rather in his packaging. The real weakness here is Monahan's implausible framework, which is the direct result of some rather transparent marketing schemes.
In THE BELL WITCH, Monahan asks us to believe that what lies between the covers of his book is not a novel, but rather a recently discovered manuscript written by one Richard Powell for the edification of his daughter. His daughter, we are told, is the product of Powell's marriage to Betsy Bell, daughter of the haunted John Bell and target of some of the mysterious entity's most violent abuse. No less, we are lead to believe that Betsy Bell's daughter has never before heard this well-publicized story of her mother's torment and her grandfather's murder at the hands of a malicious spirit. For just a moment, set aside the fact that Monahan is the well-known author of several notable novels of the supernatural. Then ask yourself, "Do I smell a gimmick here?"
Perhaps in an effort to make this book appear more journal-like, Monahan dispenses with the usual convention of chapters. He writes straight through, from the setting of the scene to its final conclusion, in one long Uberchapter. For me, however, this device was largely unsuccessful. As a rule, when reading any book, I try to finish each reading session at a logical break point. The lack of a conventional structure just made it all that much harder to find my place each time I picked up the book again. I guess this would not have bothered me so much if it were such an apparent gimmick.
One thing that would have improved this book greatly in my mind is if the author had dispensed with at least some of the inherent racism laced throughout the length and breadth of the story. True, racism may have been en vogue in Kentucky in the early decades of the1800s, but Mr. Monahan - perhaps in a misguided attempt at period realism - took it too far. The constant references to "darkies" and, in particular, references to the "pungent odor of sweat" among the slaves, were not only overdrawn clichés, they also added nothing to the story. Even if one chooses to believe that this book is, indeed, the long, lost manuscript of Richard Powell, many, if not all of these offensive statements could have been stripped without affecting the end product in any way other than making it more palatable to a wider audience. If the desire had been to tell the complete and unedited story in Powell's own words, the alleged manuscript could have been published, as found, without the need for any involvement on the part of Monahan.
While I've been largely critical of THE BELL WITCH, I would never tell anyone NOT to read this book out of hand. It tells a decent story, sheds some new light on an old legend and even has a significant amount of entertainment value. But if you are looking for a good example of Brent Monahan's best work, I would strongly urge you to start with THE BOOK OF COMMON DREAD. It's a great supernatural novel that doesn't try to be anything else.

Cool comic

If you're into social and political commentary, this comic is for you.

Tomorrow personally takes a lefty stance but he drops daisy cutters on the hypocrisy of politicians and his depiction of a snarling Cheney is enough to give you a coronary from laughing. Of course, Cheney's not in this book, since it's like from 98 to 2000.

He also does a good job of ripping on consumerism, though he's kind of barking up a false tree, like most people who rail against consumerism.

Overall, I look forward to reading this guy every Monday when he publishes. This book is a pretty good collection of his works, views, etc.

Tom Tomorrow is a National Treasure

Nobody is safe from the barbs of Sparky, the cynical penguin who's had it with Didactic Republicans and Wimp Democrats. Easily the worlds wordiest cartoon, This Modern World is a strong dose of cynicism towards the White House, Congress, and the corporations that employ them both.
I'm sure the work of Tom Tomorrow will be one of the first things John Ashcroft has burned.
Sorry, did that raise your Red White and Blue hackles? Think Tom isn't a "REAL" American? Things have gotten to the point that criticism is considered traitorous? Then this book is for you.
