Great maps and recommendations, a couple of small mistakes

This book was very helpful in helping us get around San Fran and eat at places that weren't total tourist traps. We liked the frankness of the guide (the "tourist trap walking tour" along fisherman's wharf) and some of the suggestions to see things we would have overlooked (the pet cemetery in the Presidio was worth seeing). The maps were very helpful and I felt quite comfortable with the layout of the city and its neighborhoods after reading this book. It did, however, contain a couple of errors that makes me give this a 4-star review. The directions to get to the Manson Family Mansion in the Haight were wrong in their instructions (it said to turn right at one point when it should have said left) and it recommended a place in Chinatown for Dim Sum that is cheap ($.50 to $2.00). The restaurant was on the wrong side of the street and it was not a sit-down joint, which would have been fine except we were in desperate need of a sit after walking around the city's very hilly neighborhoods for the better part of a day. It was, though, cheap and fantastic dim sum - we ate it while strolling through Chinatown.
Having said that, this is a fantastic guide and I would recommend it highly. Especially notable: House of Nan King in Chinatown. It's recommended in Let's Go and we liked it so much we ate there twice! The freshest and tastiest calamari - ever. Also have a cocktail at Vesuivio's, a haunt formerly frequented by Ginsberg, Kerouac and the like. Not necessarily cheap, but they do have a nightly happy hour and it's just a cool place.

TANGO LESSONS IN AN ICE CREAM PARLOUR

I ordered Let's Go San Francisco to guide me on a two week 'skim' of that city. My granddaughter and I roamed the city with Let's Go in hand and found delights we would never have discovered without it, e.g. the seals near Fisherman's Wharf, the aforementioned tango lessons, the shops and cafes on Polk Street, how to get to City Lights Bookstore. When I needed to consult a doctor I found a travelers' clinic in Let's Go.
My advice to travellers - DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT.

The best book on the topic

By starting with life experiences of some individual male and female berdache, Roscoe literally captivates readers, before carrying us into the comparative, theoretical, analytical second half which is sophisticated but clearly written. Will Roscoe's work on North American berdache/"two spirit" is far and away the most theoretically sophisticated and historically systematic work in a burgeoning field. While many people have been pawing at a few historical records and fantasizing a great deal, he has systematically gone through a multilingual literature, showed how the discourse unfolded in specific European national traditions, and sorted out continuities and discontinuities in space and in time (both in the discourse and in the phenomena of Native American cultural survivla, insofar as it can be glimpsed through Christianity-distorted lenses).

Although Roscoe's primary focus is on historical records of "berdache," he has also discusses contemporary "gay Indians," building on his earlier book _Living the Spirit_. My only regret is that Roscoe did not include his article "Was We'Wah [the Zuni "man-woman' he wrote an earlier book about] a homosexual?" in this book. _Changing Ones_ is the single indispensable book on the subject of gender and sexuality of Native American gender-mixing roles.

Two-spirit people limited to homosexuality?

The book was an easy and enjoyable read. Roscoe makes the historical documents and stories a lot more accessible than just an offering of dry comments. I loved how he related the two spirited of then to those of today and how he discribed the many forms of discrimination they must face both then and now.

The only issue I find with this book is that, although he states that historically those of two spirits were not necessarily homosexual, nor were they limited to the activities of one gender over another but many times participated in both, he doesn't mention modern day two spirit people who identify as bisexual except in the context of a modern "problem", alongside alcoholism, drug use and prostitution. He does this while alluding to bisexuality being accepted historically and stating how some two spirit people had children, which at the time, was impossible without both genders being involved.

I find it interesting that although Roscoe is doing humanity a service by providing this kind of education to all as well as liberation those two spirit who may still feel alone in their reservations amid so much persecution; he is shortchanging the very essence of the Two Spirit person, denying ALL it's many shades. This only perpetuates the poisonous discrimination the gay movement has fought so hard to dismantle, yet keeps alive within it's own community.

In this aspect, I would consider this writing as the gay community has considered many of the first writings on homosexuality- up to a certain point, discriminating and ignorant. However, besides that it's an excellent book considering what is available out there.

Will Roscoe has compiled a wonderful and invaluable overview of a long-neglected topic. As he notes in the introduction to this volume, our language is currently burdened by an archaic and often unhelpful lexicon in addressing 'third and fourth genders' so commonly encountered in pre-Columbian North America. This book includes a compilation of the historical and current literature, and readers will find the extensive Glossary and the Tribal Index to be of great use as a source for further investigation. One can savor Lorenz's talks with Austrian journalist Mundl shortly before his death in 1989 as a passionate, forceful, eloquent plea for ecological sanity. Like an Old Testament prophet, the author of On Aggression warns against the destruction of forests, pollution of waters, extinction of animals and human overpopulation. He is a clearsighted opponent of nuclear power plants. Lorenz can be irritating, however: he displays a casual attitude toward oil spills, and appears to admire hunters "who perform their art in a truly conscientious and noble manner." Although an animal lover, he believes it is acceptable to kill them for food, and he supports large-scale laboratory experimentation on them. Lorenz's horror of big cities seems more elitist than ecologically motivated, and his remarks on youth and age, Darwinism and harmony with nature at times sound sententious or pontifical. Photos.

This book comprises ten years of the recollections and thoughts of Nobel Prize-winning ethologist Lorenz, recorded in conversation with journalist Mundl before Lorenz's death in 1989. It includes reflections on Lorenz's life and on his lifelong relationship with animals; and his views on maladies of the modern world. Many of the themes and even some of the anecdotes will be familiar to those who have read Lorenz's previous works, particularly Civilized Man's Eight Deadly Sins ( LJ 5/1/74). This work, more readable than Lorenz's final book, The Waning of Humaneness ( LJ 7/87), is especially relevant in a time of reawakening environmental consciousness. A good choice, especially for large and medium-sized public libraries.

A great book by an un-perfect man

This is a great book by a great author. He gave us a whole new way of looking at being human.

Of course, his nazi past shines through. In another book, he equated American bombings as equivalent in their inhumanity to Nazi deathcamps, and claimed that a tribe of American Indians is genetically inferior.

But no one is perfect, right?

Some are great, but no one is perfect

Konrad Lorenz was certainly a genius. His book "On Aggression", expanded by Desmond Morris' "The Naked Ape", gave us a whole new image of what it means to be human. But every genius has his failings, and in another book he shows his nazi ideas: American bombing was just as bad as Nazi death camps, and a certain tribe of American Indians is genetically inferior.

In this present book Lorenz comes across with a brilliant cascade of personal knowlege. Mostly about how our environment is being threatened by man's activites. Somehow his anti-Americanism still shines through. His opposition to urban life is reminiscent of Rousseau, Pol Pot, and of Marx.

But let not trifles interfere with our reverence. The man was truly great!

Cruelty-free living just got easier!

Avoiding animal products, buying Fair Trade and shade-grown coffee, donating an unwanted fur, investing in socially responsible companies, and volunteering at an animal sanctuary are just a few of the subjects you'll find in Ingrid Newkirk's latest book. The president and cofounder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Newkirk eloquently bridges the gap between John Q. Public and the animal protectionist or staunch environmentalist, creating a user-friendly guidebook for integrating compassion into our daily lives.

The book is organized into ten parts: Home and Garden, Fashion and Beauty, Food and Entertaining, Recreation and Vacations, Animals in the Home, Children and Family, Business and Education, Health, Volunteering and Getting Active, and Celebrations. Each section is filled with short chapters that explore the topics in more detail. "Home and Garden," for example, addresses decorating and furnishing your home using cruelty-free products; finding cleaning solutions that are eco- and animal-friendly; and using humane methods to deal with insects, mice, and other uninvited creatures. The chapters are supported by a list of resources that should help answer just about any "But how do I...?" question. Of course, there are also plenty of simple vegan recipes -- even for making your own vegan dog and cat food.

Although PETA (now in its 25th year) is well known for their often-shocking and controversial campaigns, "Making Kind Choices" prudently relies instead on stories from a wide variety of voices, from engaged activists and international celebrities to everyday people just trying to make the world a better place. Whether you want to learn more about the vegan lifestyle, how to rescue an injured animal on the road, where to invest ethically, which charities do not test on animals, what goes into planning a compassionate wedding, or anything in between, I think you'll agree the modest price of this book is money very well spent indeed.

Wonderful Read, Useful Information! Don't miss this one.

I loved this book; it is an outstanding read. What's it about? It is about making choices in your daily living that are unselfish. What could be better than that?

This book is packed full of information that you can use in daily living, information that gives you the inside scoop of just what is in certain products? How are animals really treated? Why does it help to drink organic coffee? Just to name a very few.

The information in this book is about our everyday living and understanding the responsibility that we have to live in unity with all of life on our planet. It is not written in a condemning way, but instead brings great understanding as to why we should respect life in all forms. It is also filled with alternatives, meals that are made with healthy foods, that not only improve our bodies but are animal friendly. Cleaning supplies that do the job but do not hurt the environment or those who live in it. I found that to be very refreshing and informative.

The author also gives a very in-depth listing of animal ingredients that we can look for in products we eat and use and alternatives for them. She gives names and addresses of companies that sell products or foods that are friendly to our world.

Great! I want you to understand that this is just not another book tearing you apart for eating animal flesh or using animal products. No, it's a book of information, one that is a real eye opener; and it is written in a very easy to understand way.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. I intend to keep it handy so I may refer to it time and time again. I'm also going to make some life changes, I believe for the better. Pick this one up and read what you may not know. I really believe it will make a difference in your life. Great book! Great read

New insight

I have been a vegetarian all my life and have stopped using animal products (tested or material) for a decade or more. And still this book gave me ideas about plenty of more things to do to make my commitment more valuable to earth and me. One of the few 'How to' books that actually gets you started. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering becoming animal and earth friendly in their daily lives. I would also recommend Karen Logan's Clean House, Clean Planet for the people who are specifically looking for eco-friendly non-toxic house keeping tips
