From Publishers Weekly
After Meadows and her husband learned that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had ranched for several years in their beloved vacation stomping grounds of northern Patagonia, the couple became obsessed with pinning down the last days and deaths of the legendary 19th-century outlaws. For seven years they chased rumors in Bolivia, Argentina and Chile, twice mortgaging their house in order to hunt down facts that had eluded police, Pinkerton detectives and historians. Starting in Patagonia, the two amateur detectives ferreted out thousands of letters, documents and newspapers; located South American neighbors and U.S. relatives of the bandits; visited supposed hideouts; exhumed coffins said to contain their remains; and had bones analyzed for DNA clues. Nothing satisfied Meadows until she and her husband chose to believe an account, once dismissed by Pinkertons as false, that had been told by a hostage taken by the outlaws the night before they were killed by Bolivian soldiers. The account established the year (1908), place (San Vincente) and manner of Cassidy and the Kid's deaths. Unfortunately, the drama of this obsessive pursuit is buried under Meadows's overwhelming detail, which supplants the colorful bandits themselves, the exotic locales and any insight into the compulsion that drove her and her husband. From Library Journal
Legend has it that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a gunfight with Bolivian soldiers in 1908. Author Meadows and her husband, Dan, spent good parts of the years 1986-93 researching the outlaws and searching for their graves. Both a history of the famous pair and a South American travelog, this book is packed with painstaking detail of tedious research conducted in various archives, courthouses, newspaper morgues, and the Library of Congress. It's sprinkled with stories of adventurous backroad travel through Argentine pampas, Chilean deserts, and Bolivian mountains in rental cars, buses, trains, and trucks. Meadows spins a decent mystery story, but the detail of the research overwhelms the excitement she creates, so much so that finally the reader doesn't care much how the mystery is resolved. Recommended for comprehensive Western Americana collections.

From Booklist
Like all good legendary figures, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid left behind mysteries concerning their lives and deaths. Did they really commit all the crimes attributed to them? Did they fake their deaths in South America so they could return to the U.S. without worrying about warrants and bounty hunters? And who the heck was Etta Place, anyway? During an Argentine vacation in the mid-l980s, Meadows and her husband set out to run down the definitive Butch and Sundance story or something as close to it as possible. What they found and how it compares with the rumors and legends that have constituted the story over the years is what this highly entertaining book is about. Letters from the outlaws are reprinted, leads run down, and snippets of history recounted in an engaging jumble that becomes more confusing with each new bit of information. Meadows hits several "blank walls" but perseveres in trying to reconcile all the accrued information and misinformation with the few verifiable historical facts of the Butch and Sundance saga. In the end, she and we realize what it's like to chase ghosts and make sense out of myth. Mike Tribby

On the trail of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid
By Lenore S. Schellinger
I must admit that in my mind the myths around Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid were all tied up with the 1969 movie starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. I had a vague idea that the characters were based on real people, but I wasn't very curious about them. Then I ran across this book. I meant to give it a desultory glance, but I got hooked by the charming George Leroy Parker aka Butch Cassidy and his hothead partner, Harry Longabaugh aka the Sundance Kid. I found myself peering at the photographs and thinking, "They were real!" I was particularly entranced with the mysterious Etta Place (if that was actually her name). This is a very entertaining account of obsessive sleuthing. The author and her husband even went to Bolivia and witnessed the digging up of remains of an outlaw purported to be Sundance. Ms. Meadows reaches no definite conclusions, and that's just fine with me. Perhaps if we knew exactly what happened to them, they wouldn't be so intriguing.

Digging up the truth
By David Group
Digging Up Butch and Sundance is as engrossing as any fictional detective story, thanks to Anne Meadows' exceptional writing style and dogged pursuit of the facts. She brings to life the men behind the myth, and deals with a wealth of confusing and conflicting accounts with clarity and intelligence, spicing her story with numerous fascinating details about her and her husband's countless trips to South America in search of the truth. While her final answers may not have solved the mystery of the outlaws' fate with 100% certainty, she has done more than anyone else to come to a solution, which is certain to satisfy all but the most of skeptical of critics. May be the most complete (and accurate) book about their final days, and is likely to remain so. Highly recommended.

Meh
By A Reader
While I appreciated all the work that must have gone into her travel and research, Anne Meadows is in desperate need of an editor. This book drowns under mind-numbing, unimportant detail. This would have been so much better in the hands of a real investigative journalist, or someone used to writing investigative or historical non-fiction. Wonderful effort, pretty poor execution.

James W. Hall is the critically acclaimed author of eleven crime novels, including Body Language and Blackwater Sound. He's also published four books of poetry. And several of his short stories have appeared in magazines like the Georgia Review and Kenyon Review.

Now, writing in the spirit of Dave Barry and Garrison Keillor, Hall wins a new kind of reader with this collection of essays that run from insightful to opinionated, funny to wise.

Hall ponders subjects as diverse as his own love affair with Florida which began on a trip after college from which he never returned, to his equally passionate romance with books. He ponders the nature of summer heat, the writing of Hemingway and James Dickey, television, teaching, politics, fatherhood and much more. In the vibrant and elegant prose which characterize his fiction and poetry, Hall now proves himself a master of the essay as well.

From Publishers Weekly
He's probably not the spokesperson the South Florida tourism council had in mind, but his new collection of 40 brisk, witty essays proves that poet and crime novelist James W. Hall (Blackwater Sound) is one of the region's biggest and most thoughtful boosters. Hot Damn!: Alligators in the Casino, Nude Women in the Grass, How Seashells Changed the Course of History, and Other Dispatches from Paradise includes pieces on television, heat waves, hurricanes and, of course, the writing life, all set against the backdrop of his beloved adopted state. Hall confesses a deep-seated envy of Florida natives; traces the epidemiology of suburban sprawl in "Disney Virus"; and recounts his wife's violent carjacking.

From Library Journal
In his introduction, Hall mystery writer (e.g., Buzz Cut), poet, and college professor declares that "essays are about as sexy as donkeys." Blaming college composition courses for the form's status, Hall goes on to explain how he came to have a "three-year love affair" with the essay after a newspaper editor asked him to write a weekly column. The resulting collection is flawless. Hall writes about how he first came to Florida or as the locals call it, "Paradise," with a new Ph.D. and no job prospects. Rather than settle for a teaching job somewhere else, he worked as a landscaper until a suitable position came along. Hall wryly comments on the idea that although he's lived in Florida for over 30 years, he'll never be considered "native." The essays cover a wide range of topics, including Florida's culture and climate, what constitutes community, vacationing in your back yard, the writing life, marriage, and American culture. "Letter to My Father" beautifully blends Hall's poetic sensibilities with a discussion of what can remain unsaid between men. Highly recommended. Pam Kingsbury, Florence, AL

Just a wonderful change of pace.
By nobizinfla
Mid-afternoon yesterday UPS brought me my latest Amazon order.
On top was Dr. Hall's "Hot Damn!"
I devoured it in two sessions.
These thirty-nine essays are insightful, poignant, thoughtful, humorous, heartfelt and a joy to read.
The compositions are such a delight that I will now go back and savor a couple of them daily. Each one is most relatable on a multitude of levels.
You do not have to be Floridian to enjoy these essays---but if you are, many strike a most responsive chord.
Seldom do I stray from the mystery/thriller genre, but like "Seabiscuit," "Hot Damn!" reads like a novel.
"The Hardy Boys" chapter alone is worth the price of admission.
This is exhilerating writing that makes you feel good. Do not miss it.
Hot Damn!

Poet, Crime novelist and Essayest
By John Harrison
This man can write. He can write fiction and he can write about Florida. These 39 essays are the superb refections of an interesting mind at work, at play and once, afraid for someone he loves. If you remember and liked John Kennedy's statement about how close the chemistry of our blood is to sea water then you will love Hall's "We swim in the amniotic fluids of our earth, as we swam so long ago like blind fish in the womb." (From Touchy Feely)
I like his crime novels. But if you like Florida, particularly the Florida Keys, or evocative writing, or walking with an exceptionlly observant mind through interesting times, then you will appreciate this book of essays.

Nice leisurely pace
By Watson McFestus
As per the intro the author says these are a collection of several years worth of essays he wrote for the Miami Herald and Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. They are enjoyable and provoking -running the gamut from outrage to tender reflections. My favorites were the ones on addiction to TV news and the boat trip out to the strange redneck island past Sanibel-Captiva Islands. To paraphrase John D. MacDonald - some Good Old Stuff.

Fatal Remains (A Marti MacAlister Mystery), by Eleanor Taylor Bland

When Marti MacAlister and her partner Matthew "Vik" Jessenovik respond to a report of skeletal remains found on a wooded piece of land, the pair has no idea it's just the first indication of a convoluted case of murder and conspiracy dating back hundreds of years. The skeleton turns out to be quite a mystery in itself, leading Native American groups and historians specializing in the Underground Railroad to flock to the site.

Unfortunately for all involved, the violence associated with the area is not confined to the distant past, and soon reports of mysterious accidents and suspicious deaths are coming in faster than Marti would like. A small contingent of locals even swears the land is haunted by a ghost intent on exacting a vicious revenge for some unknown grievance. Marti knows there must be a more traditional explanation, and it's her job to find out what it is. Eleanor Taylor Bland is at the top of her form in this taut, well-researched, suspenseful entry in her award-winning Marti MacAlister series.

From Publishers Weekly
African-American police detective Marti MacAlister is used to "simple" murders, not ones whose roots are as old and entwined with history as those she encounters in Bland's 11th meaty mystery (after 2002's Windy City Dying). Set in Lincoln Prairie, Ill., home to Potawatomi Indians, past and present, and to an early settler, Idbash Smith, who was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, the story has a supernatural element that only mildly distracts amid the otherwise realistic crime-solving. When Marti and partner Matthew "Vik" Jessenovik look into the death of a young archeologist working alone at a site on the vast estate of Josiah Smith, they discover an odd history of accidents, most involving members of the Smith family. An aging black Jewish convert tracing his lineage from slavery to freedom and an unidentified Native-American body provide other threads that will take Marti into uncharted areas for an urban homicide investigation. Patience and persistence are the keys to the solution as Marti and Vik uncover the ghosts of the past literally and figuratively. This is a strong addition to a strong series, with a delightful kick of an ending.

From Booklist
The tenth entry in Bland's series starring Marti MacAlister, an African American detective, formerly of the Chicago Police Department and now working in nearby Lincoln Prairie, is a historical excavation as well as a mystery. As MacAlister and partner Vik Jessenovik investigate suspicious deaths connected to the site of an archaeological dig, readers will learn a great deal about remains from Potawotami Indians as well as from runaway slaves seeking the Underground Railroad. A young archaeology student is hired to excavate on the grounds of a mansion whose inhabitants have long been plagued by bad luck. The student ends up crushed to death by a boulder, as does a workman sent after her to excavate. Unearthing a trove of long-kept secrets, MacAlister suddenly finds herself in the middle of a fight between preservationists and developers. A skillful blend of history and mystery, enlivened by MacAlister's jauntily determined character. Connie Fletcher

complex police procedural
By A Customer
Lincoln Prairie, Illinois police detectives Marti MacAlister and Vik Jessenovik investigate the death of an apprentice archaeologist on the property of Josiah Smith. The deceased was working on a dig to prove that nothing of value was on this segment of the Smith property because the elderly Josiah planned to sell the land to a developer. However, instead of cooperation from Josiah and his family, the octogenarian patriarch informed, or perhaps warned his brood to offer nothing to the cops.
To Josiah's chagrin, the dig uncovers the remains of a Potawatomi Indian settlement and slave tags indicating that ancestor Idbash Smith was connected to the Underground Railroad, but not necessarily as a positive helper. Marti and Vik begin their own style of digging in an effort to ferret out a modern day killer amidst the silent Smiths while others from a ghost to slave descendents to Native American preservation groups arrive to convolute the suddenly dangerous investigation.
Fans of complex police procedural tales will appreciate FATAL REMAINS due to two strong mysteries (past and present) and the wonderful lead cops. The story line is at its best when Vik and Marti either investigate or provide a glimpse inside their personal lives especially the male protagonist who struggles with his wife's MS illness. The historical aspects of the case (the Potawatomi tribe and the slave manacles) add a sense of heritage and depth to the modern day inquiries. Though the ghost seems more like a spirit out of water, fans will appreciate this powerful who-done-it.

Suspenseful and gracefully written
By Lynn Harnett
Multiple murders dovetail seamlessly with displaced American Indian and fugitive slave history in this latest Marti MacAlister mystery. It all begins with a skeleton on a piece of scrub land in Lincoln Prairie where the African-American former Chicago cop now works and lives with her mother, husband and three children.
The skeleton turns out to be a Potawotami Indian, but before Marti and her partner "Vik" Jessenovick can identify him, a budding archaeologist working on a dig for the prominent Smith family is killed in an apparent accident on the site. The family has been plagued by peculiar accidents throughout its history, which dates from Ibdash Smith, reputed to be a link on the Underground Railroad.
Meanwhile, point of view switches among characters out of the police orbit, which include a black man researching his family history and an Indian trying to put his behind him, as well as the Smith family patriarch, striving to keep the family secrets buried.
These voices give the reader a bit of a lead over the cops, but Marti's boys help fill her in on local history (while Marti reflects on how little was taught of her heritage in her schooldays) while cop smarts and outside experts put them so far inside the picture, they become targets themselves. Bland works family life in without having to create any formula tension and the police procedure is logical, absorbing and spiced with action. A strong series, getting stronger.

A mingling of cultures
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Marti MacAlister and her partner Matthew "Vik" Jessenovik are called to the scene of a possible homicide where skeletal remains have been found on the property of local rich man, Josiah Smith. The bones show signs of violence and the detectives publish a computerized enhancement of what the man would have looked like while alive. Before they can get telephone responses from anyone who might know the man, the action begins piling up. An archeological student falls into a pit where she is digging. A handy man falls or jumps out of a barn window. Suddenly Marti and Vik are swamped with the investigation as they try to decide if all these "accidents" are really what they seem or if there is some evil afoot.
Marti and Vik discover several family members who have had suspicious "accidents" on the property throughout the years. Now that Josiah Smith is selling some of the land and giving other acreage away to public organizations there could be good reasons for someone to wish to stop the new land distributions.
Marti and Vik not only have to look at the present and the future to solve this crime, they must also delve into the distant past. Plenty of Native American and African American history is uncovered as they search for answers. Along with a very good mystery, we get a marvelous history lesson about the entwined lives of early Native Americans and African Americans. If I had one wish for the book, it would be that the past and present had been tied together in a stronger way at the end. Otherwise, it was a very good read.

Knight: My Story, by Bob Knight, Bob Hammel

Few people in sports have had more books written about them. This is the first by Bob Knight---one of the most literate, candid, quoted, and outspoken men in American public life telling in this first-person account of his full, rich life. Much of that life has been in basketball, most of it because of basketball, but it also has brought him forward as a coach, who has proved academic responsibility and production of championship college athletic teams not only can coexist but should. His excitement as things start anew for him at Texas Tech is matched here by his characteristic frankness and remarkable recollection of a life he clearly has enjoyed.

His Indiana teams also won NCAA titles in 1980--81 and 1986--87. The 1975--76 Indiana team was the last unbeaten team in college men's basketball. Knight's career includes six seasons as head coach at Army, where his teams won 102 games and lost 50. He is the only coach whose teams won championships in the NCAA tournament, the National Invitation Tournament, the Olympic Games, and the Pan American Games. During all that he has been at the heart of more controversies while running a winning and squeaky-clean program than any coach of any sport anytime or anywhere.

His excitement as things start anew for him is matched here by his candor and remarkable recollection of a life he clearly has enjoyed. You'll see why, with story after story---some delightful, some hilarious, some poignant, none of them dull: the story of Bob Knight's life.

From Publishers Weekly
Knight was the basketball coach of Indiana University for 29 years before being fired in September 2000. Because of his fiery some would say uncontrollable temper, Knight has acquired many critics over the years, but he was a hero in Indiana, where his teams had many winning years, including an undefeated season in 1975-1976. With Knight's colorful background, it's surprising that the coach has delivered a mostly colorless autobiography. After excruciating detail about his days as a high school and college basketball player, Knight bogs downs his story with dry recitations of the highlights of virtually every team he coached. And to demonstrate that he is not some rogue figure, Knight goes to great lengths to describe the many friendships he has developed over the years. The combative Knight does not emerge until he begins discussing his firing. In Knight's view, his termination was the result of the personal agenda of Indiana University president Myles Brand. Brand's determination to remove Knight was hardened by the national media, which Knight is convinced was out to destroy him. Knight, in turn, loathed most people in the media (among the exceptions is sportswriter and coauthor Hammel). As an autobiography, Knight's book is disappointing; however, college hoops fans can learn more about the game from this book than from most instructional guides. (Mar.)Forecast: The book is due out just as "March Madness" begins, and the surprising success of Texas Tech (which Knight has turned into a Top 25 team) should only heighten interest in Knight. The book's publication coincides with ESPN's release of its movie, A Year on the Brink, which is based on John Feinstein's bestselling book and stars Brian Dennehy.

From Booklist
On the surface, Bob Knight is everything a college basketball coach should be: he wins championships and almost unfailingly guides his players to graduation. Yet he is the most controversial coach in contemporary sports. Why? Well, there was the chair-throwing incident, the if-rape-is-inevitable-just-enjoy-it remark, and the video of the coach choking a player, which led to Knight being fired at Indiana after 29 years. In this long-awaited autobiography, written with award-winning sports journalist Hammel (long a member of Knight's inner circle), Bob grudgingly admits to a couple of lapses in judgment but generally dismisses the controversies in which he has been embroiled as resulting from lies, misunderstandings, and media-fueled exaggerations. The few chapters on the "bad stuff" are best skimmed quickly. Few readers will be swayed by Knight's self-serving defense. Still, there is a fascinating man hiding in these pages, a man whose multisided personality, startling depth, and undeniable intelligence may surprise many. Knight displays here his palpable affection for his players and his reverence for the game and the great coaches who preceded him--Joe Lapchick and Henry Iba, among others. His humor, which can be surprisingly self-deprecating, is generously sprinkled throughout the text, most often in anecdotes about players, the business of recruiting, and confrontations with officials. The lines have been drawn in the Knight controversy; no one will change sides on the basis of this book, but both sides will come away with a better understanding of the man behind the often-vitriolic sound bites on SportsCenter. Don't Prejudge Coach Knight
By Bill Emblom
I am not a basketball fan of any level. My personal library consists of hundreds of baseball books, but less than five basketball books. I have heard about Coach Knight and his alleged abusive treatment of players, and expected a book laced with profanities. I was pleasantly surprised with the very minimal amount of swearing the book contained. I have no doubt that Coach Knight has the best interests of his players in mind in giving their best efforts whether it be on the basketball floor, in the classroom, or in any other employment they may be involved in. A number of very respected people in many walks of life are Coach Knight supporters. Ted Williams, Mark McGuire, and Tony LaRussa are among those from the world of baseball who respect him for what he does. Coach Knight admits that remaining in Indiana after the administration changed was a mistake, but when you are dedicated in your work, and you have been at a school (Indiana) for as long as he was, it isn't easy to just pick up and leave. Sometimes adversity can be a blessing in disguise, and his firing at Indiana and eventual hiring at Texas Tech turned out well for him. When the administration doesn't support you it is time to move on. Coach Knight's love of his work and dedication to Indiana made the decision a difficult one for him and the administration ended up making it for him. As I said, I am not a basketball fan, but I came away with a greater understanding and respect for Coach Knight after reading this book. If you are relying on the opinions of others in judging Coach Knight, you owe it to yourself to hear his version regarding his life and years of coaching. All of the controversial incidents coloring his career are dealt with from his point of view, and it is only fair to hear him out in regard to these cases. This book will be a permanent addition to my library.

Bob Knight
By C. Baker
Whether you love him, hate him, or are neutral toward him (I'm in the last category), Bob Knight's book is a fascinating glimpse at his personality, his Indiana basketball teams, and college basketball in general. For Indiana basketball fans (I'm an ACC fan) and college basketball fans in general (a category I fit into), this is a must read. Knight gives a lot of detail about his Indiana teams, especially those that won national championships, and discusses his point of view on the state of college basketball today.

There are really two main topics that run throughout the book - and that is Indiana basketball and the controversies that have surrounded Knight - mostly because of his volatile temper. From a basketball standpoint this is really a great inside look at the college game and the Hoosiers. Knight's detestation of losing and lack of effort are part of what gets him into trouble because he is clearly a disciplinarian and expects a lot from his players and others involved in the program. On the other hand that is also why his teams traditionally have been over achievers. In my opinion, his success in college basketball has been mostly because of his coaching talent and getting his teams to play like a team instead of selfishly.

Even though in some ways Knight claims, and I think in a lot ways rightfully so, that a lot of controversies about his temper and clashes with players, officials, or others is a result of his reputation and are undeserved. Frankly, I do believe him on this account. And he does seem contrite about some incidents that are clearly his own fault where he's lost his temper. Some may argue that he is not apologetic enough or doesn't face his own faults in some of the controversies and I can't disagree with that either. On these issues the reader will have to decide what to believe.

But either way, this is highly readable and very interesting.

The Good, The Bad, and The General!
By W. Adams
Full disclosure. I am an Indiana University alumnus, a big fan of both college basketball and Indiana hoops and a Bob Knight supporter. If you fit these categories, I think you will enjoy Knight's new book. However, this is hardly an unbiased opinion. Let me try something else.
There are two undeniable facts about Bob Knight: first, he has spent a lifetime in college basketball; and, two, he reached EVERY pinnacle available in college/amateur basketball. These two facts alone make for some interesting storytelling, and that is what you get with Knight's new book. He is a very intelligent and humorous individual, and, obviously, highly volatile. Bring all these elements together in a book and you get an in-depth, enjoyable and informative look at college basketball as only Bob Knight could tell it. Certainly, all the criticisms of this book ring correct. Coach Knight gloats over his friends and supporters, and quickly dismisses his critics and detractors. That is human nature, but certainly not a reason to avoid the book.
Is Bob Knight perfect? No way, and he is the first to admit it. Knight even goes as far as saying he can be his own worst enemy. He admits, at times, he doesn't know when to close his mouth. He even acknowledges mistakes along the way - personally and professionally. More importantly, however, Coach Knight also takes readers inside a gold medal-winning Olympic team and three NCAA national championship teams. He shows an unfailing commitment and devotion to his players and their families. He shows what it means to run a clean basketball program that graduates its players. Finally, his passion for coaching and for the game of basketball comes across in every page.
If you are a staunch critic of Bob Knight, this book will not change your opinion. However, if one gives the man a chance to address some of those criticisms, as well as a chance to talk about his experiences in the game, you might find a new perspective, or, at least, enjoy the book.

From Publishers Weekly
Readers who sigh at the names "Super Chief" and "Zephyr," and who remember the meal Cary Grant ate on the train in North by Northwest , may find this book fulfilling their wildest dreams. In an attempt to "preserve a record of one of the ways we used to eat," rail fan and Penn State professor Porterfield presents a detailed history of train dining. Beginning as an alternative to railroad station eateries, train dining reached its peak in 1930, when 1732 railroad dining cars were registered with the Interstate Commerce Commission, and all but ended in 1971 with telegrams like the May 1 order to Union Pacific to shut its passenger lines and make way for Amtrak. Model railroaders and social historians will find the 150 photographs and illustrations invaluable: a photo spread with dimensions of the pantry of the New York Central's Twentieth Century Limited, a sample 1920s dinner menu from the Milwaukee Railroad's Pioneer Limited, descriptions of staff sleeping quarters. The second half of the book offers 250 recipes from 48 railroad lines, featuring early-20th-century fare like Lobster Newburg New York Central, Poinsettia Salad-Merchant's Limited and Baked Potato Pennsylvania. For authentic American versions of lamb fricassee, deviled eggs and blanc mange presented without campiness or apology, this is the source.

I have to admit, although an avid railroad history fan I don't buy many books. When I saw the title of ths book, it was love at first sight. After a quick read of the TOC, I ordered at once. What a great journey into the most pleasurable aspect of railroad history, the dining car. I admire the great detail and research which went into this book. I read it in two sittings and was sadden to reach the end. But the second half of the book give you a second chance to go back in time again by preparing those wonderful recipies. Highly recommended.

Like the old Chilton manuals for car repair. They're great if you already know how to repair your car. Long on click here, short on why or when.
