forgotten atrocities

Mussolini's regime has gotten lucky in some retrospectives. Being greatly overshadowed by the terrible deeds of his German Axis partner. By comparison, Mussolini's actions were relatively "benign". The contribution of Ben-Ghiat's book is to remind us how, as a standalone dictatorial state, it committed many atrocities.

Some are indeed still remembered, and recounted here. Like the gassing of the Abyssinians during the 1930s, as Mussolini sought an African empire. But almost forgotten are the concentration camps built in Libya from 1930-3. Sixteen of them. Executions and deaths by starvation were common daily occurrences. Granted, these were not the extermination camps of Auschwitz and Treblinka. But they were bad enough. And deserved to be better remembered.

Other instances of Italian colonialism involve the abandonment of African-Italian children by their Italian fathers, especially in Abyssinia. While not universally done by every such Italian father, it was still common.

Interspersed with all this was looting of artifacts and monuments that caught the eye of the soldiers.

Ro examines the proliferation of crack cocaine in the last decade and the rise of gang violence, and provides thorough criticism on the music this anarchic culture has spawned. Through insightful interviews and deft observations, Ro argues that record companies and artists looking to make a profit have contributed to the spread of gangs, and that the industry of gangsta rap validates, even promotes, misogyny, gun use and the corruption of children.

Brooklyn-based freelance music reporter Ro has covered the gangsta rap scene for Spin, The Source, Rap Pages and Rolling Stone. This raw, gritty collection of his articles chronicles rap music from 1992 to 1995, mainly in Los Angeles and New York City. Ro asserts that hip-hop, which once unified people and steered a predominantly black and Latino audience in a more positive direction, has been perverted by gangsta rappers and exploitative record companies that package gang-culture images and lyrics promoting misogyny, violence, self-hatred, antisocial attitudes and gang-related murders. This message, spelled out in an introductory chapter, is muted when Ro profiles Kid Frost, Street Mentality, Method Man, NWA's Dr. Dre and other rap artists. In this collection, he parties, hangs out with the stars and hears their whining stories of fame and self-destructiveness. As Ro acknowledges, this is "not an anti-gangsta rap tract," and because it's too close to fanzine fare, it probably won't make a difference.

A writer for The Source and Rolling Stone, Ro collects several of his personalized nonfiction articles about the culture and implications of gangsta rap in the Nineties. After an introduction about the mercurial rise of gangs with the cocaine traffic of the last decade, he outlines the brutal violence apparent in the attendant culture, with sections on Kid Frost, Scarface, and genre pioneers N.W.A. He also chronicles the misogyny of the gangstas by describing the attitudes and exploits of such rappers as Luther Campbell and Too Short. Throughout the book, the author argues that gangsta rap, commercialized by record companies and artists in search of profit, has contributed to the growth of the gang culture it glorifies. Though he never shows the direct effect of gangsta rap on the demoralization of youth or its connection to the gun culture and sexism of mainstream America, Ro's well-written work provides a sobering look at gangsta rap and the culture it reflects and promotes. Gangsta is an incredible book!

Ronin Ro's Gangsta is much better than Have Gun Will Travel. Ro's writing was more artistic, and had more feeling. He spent most of this book reflecting on the future of America and music and the nature of life and death. Portions of the book were heart-rending; some were hilarious; others were unbelievable. This book showed me where most of the rap-writing styles out there today came from. Ronin was at his best in this book.

I really do not understand how someone gave this one star! It is one of the important Hip Hop books chronicling the violence in Hip Hop from a mid 1990's perspective, and written from the inside looking out. Any serious student of Hip hop should own this.

Shallow.

Could a novel targeted at middle school girls possibly be more cliched than this one? The characters in this book are not good role models for teenage girls. The multiple older men who are obsessed with the main character was a disturbing element that made me wonder what the authors could possibly have been thinking, especially given that one of them was depicted in a positive light.

This novel is a short, easy read. The mystery itself is actually quite good, with a red herring that can easily mislead, but with the actual killer well set up. But the mystery is the only thing about the book that's any good.

Where to start? The main character, Shaley O'Connor and her best friend Brittany are both 'popular and attractive' -- thin, beautiful, fashion and makeup conscious, with no subtlety or depth to their characters. Shaley is annoyingly immature; what depth she has involves whining and throwing temper tantrums about her missing father, and her famous mother who doesn't pay enough attention to her. She insists that she would give up all the money and perks for time with her mother, but in the very next scene is off spending atrocious amounts of money shopping for clothes.

Brittany, her best friend, is little more than an accessory. She has no personality, aside from the bizarre quirk of 'sometimes being able to see the future' (a very crude plot device that is used once, unnecessarily, at the beginning and is never useful again). She disappears when it's inconvenient to have her around, so that she's left behind several times when Shaley goes to do important stuff elsewhere. And when the time comes for Shaley to finally really break down and need comfort, even with Brittany right there, she calls in a third party to console her.

The authors also resort to the tired and over-used device of short cut-aways to the twisted mind of the killer in a sad attempt to up the suspense. These were so poorly done -- and utterly disturbing, given how pedophilic they became -- that I eventually just started skipping them.

There were so many elements that had potential, especially Shaley's relationship with her mother, but what could have been thoughtful and touching was handled clumsily and without any particular depth or insight. Top everything off with a few references to Jesus Christ clumsily jammed in, and the product wasn't worth the time I took reading it.

Unfortunately, the fame soon loses its power and appeal when one of Shaley's closest friends is murdered back stage at the latest concert. As new evidence comes to light she soon realizes her own life is in danger. Not knowing who to trust, Shaley turns to the God who has always seemed so far to help her in her greatest time of need.

Mother and daughter team Brandilyn and Amberly Collins have stormed onto the YA scene in exhilarating style with this great new series. Always Watching is a fast paced whodunit set against the intriguing backdrop of rock star celebrity. From the opening lines, we are immersed into Shaley's exciting life as a celebrity's daughter. It doesn't take long for us to see that fame is not all its cut out to be. Indeed Shaley's struggle to balance her public status with her true identity is one of the most interesting aspects of this story.

When you read Brandilyn Collins you expect mystery and thrills, and once again she doesn't disappoint. Her adult fans will find much to rave about here, while new teen readers will love the youthful voice and perspective that Amberly Collins brings to the table. Underlying the tension and dread is a strong spiritual message about trusting in the God who is always watching over us. In the end we are left with the closure we long for and a promise of even more mystery to come. The Rayne Tour is in full swing and you can guarantee that I won't miss a show.

Good storyline and suspense balance out

The Rayne tour brings the rock star world to life featuring 16 year old Shaley O'Connor who is on tour with her mom's band. When Tom, her mom's makeup artist/hairdresser, is killed Shaley finds the body and suddenly everyone on the tour seems suspect. Going through interviews with police detectives and dealing with beefed up security and bodyguards Shaley deals with the downside of being rich & famous and the paparazzi blitz that follows her.
When the case takes on new details, Shaley begins doubting her own instincts on who she can trust. Further complicating matters is her mom has never disclosed who her father is and Shaley is tired of the secrets.
Finding out who killed Tom and trying to prevent further deaths on the tour take priority and Shaley tries to find answers before the killer comes for her or another band member.
(This is the first book in a series.)

Grand Finishes For Moldings

I was surprised to read the earlier negative reviews. I found the instruction thorough and very clear: I've put in base molding before but got a lot out of the crown installation step-by-steps. The book's VOICE OF EXPERIENCES had many helpful hints that added a little levity to my projects but also pointed out several pitfalls I might not have ordinarilly known about. This is the third book of Nikitas's that I've purchased and I use them ("GRAND FINISHES FOR WALLS AND FLOORS" and "GRAND FINISHES FOR TILE") religiously as reference books. Definitely a keeper.

One of the few books out there about wood molding

This book isn't very good. It has some basic drawings and tips on how to install some simple molding in your house for a beautiful look. The instructions aren't very complete and don't match up to many of the photos or drawings. If you're looking for a do-it-yourself book about molding or wood paneling, keep on looking.

inspiring project

I know very little about working with wood or the tools needed and GRAND FINISHES FOR CARPENTRY was a perfect choice for me. It didn't insult my intelligence and was never condescending yet explained everything so clearly. I have two other molding books but this one pointed out several of the problems I might have encountered, whereas the others glossed over them. Though not a lot of pictures I thought there were just enough for me to accomplish creating and installing my own wainscoting in our diningroom. My wife even helped, and we both enjoyed the whole process.

Tom Tomorrow (the pen name of Dan Perkins) won the 1998 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Cartooning, but if Bobby were alive, he'd probably be furious with him. Though Tom Tomorrow's scathingly entertaining This Modern World cartoon leans hard to the left, the entire political spectrum is its shooting gallery. He's capable of skewering Newt Gingrich, Clinton ("a spineless, amoral opportunist" depicted as a worm), Reagan, Nixon, and Vlad the Impaler in a single hilarious strip. With the longest (and arguably the wittiest) word balloons in the business and a gratuitously sarcastic cartoon penguin named Sparky, Tom Tomorrow nails them all: Alan Greenspan, Abraham Lincoln, Sam Donaldson, even Mother Teresa! ("She DID befriend such noted champions of the poor as 'Baby Doc' Duvalier and Charles Keating--the latter of whom gave her more than a million dollars in cash....") Tom Tomorrow may be the most effective liberal editorialist in America. First Rate Satire

All of Tom Tomorrow's books are great. Unlike alot of cartoonist that like to fancy themselves on the edge- Tom actually is. His cartoons are biting, timely, and go for the jugular. This guy isn't afraid to point out hypocricy, stupidity or just flat out irony wherever he finds it. You gotta love a cartoonist that gets dumped by the 'U.S. News and World Report' for being too contraversial.
Sparky may be flightless, but he's one tough bird.

Fun with Sparky

Tom Tomorrow has always been able to see the bigger picture, dissect the larger issues and cut through the glaze of popular media to illustrate the absudities of modern America. I'm probably biased because I've found his politics to match my own. At the same time "This Modern World" and especially "Penguin Soup for the Soul" is so laugh-out-loud funny that it transcends mere satire but never loses its edge in the process.

Tom Tomorrow is an omnipotent political God! So many of these cartoons had me laughing out loud. This Modern World is *the* place to find the most scathing, to-the-bone critiques you'll find on the madness prevalent in Washington and elsewhere around the world. Buy it!
