This book's chief focal point is the excitement and novelty wrought by the rapidly advancing technology in the organ transplant field. While it purports to show a human portrait of those who labor, suffer, and die at life's edge, it is chiefly an over-simplified review of what goes on in the world of transplants. Here are two typical sentences: "Kidneys are fairly easy to remove." "Heart biopsies are not fun." While there are many books that treat the topic in this popular fashion, this might nevertheless be interesting to young people and general readers. Dowie is good at asking questions of science, and the final two chapters on the future are worthy of attention. I don't know how to title this.

WE have a Donor by Mark Dowie is an excellent easy breezy non technical read for the the general pulbic. The very people who will make the decisions to donate or not. Information to help make an informed decision regarding organ donation. There are thousands out here needing transplants with others too afraid to sign the donor card because of inaccurate information or Gossip being spread. Some people are afraid the physicians will not do enough to save their lives because an organ is needed. I actually heard a person say this. Hog Wash! The physicias will always do everything possible to save a person's life. After being on dialysis for 18 months I received a transplant from a brain dead accident victim. It is the "Gift of Life". My younger brother died suddenly this month and his organs were donated to help save others as he wished. I have been on both sides of this issue and believe this to be a perfect read for anyone wanting information on organ donation.

The peasant girl who led an army against the English and placed Charles VII on the French throne has inspired countless books since her death at age 19. While others have claimed Joan the Maid (as she called herself) for every cause from feminism to working-class radicalism, this meticulous volume by two French scholars sticks close to the known facts. The authors make extensive use of contemporary documents that bring to life the turbulent political scene in which Joan operated as well as her forceful personality. Joan followed the directives of voices she believed were sent to her by God; her deep piety, self-assurance, decisiveness, and shrewd intelligence radiate from her letters and from her responses to hostile questioning at the rigged trial that resulted in her being burned alive as a heretic in 1431. General readers may be intimidated at first by a detailed narrative studded with lengthy quotations, but those who persevere will discover a story all the more moving because it is not manipulated to make a modern-day point. Joan of Arc means many things to many people: the incarnation of French patriotism, a Fascist mascot for anti-Semitism, the symbol of working-class resistance, the ultimate proto-feminist, the political prisoner, the innocent woman persecuted for heresy. In order to separate legend from fact, her uses from herself, Pernoud and Clin have ingeniously turned the mystifying question "Who is Joan of Arc?" into the more manageable "What is [her] historical record?" Joan's history was brief: a year of fighting, a year of imprisonment. In 1429, inspired by holy "voices," she traveled to the failing dauphin Charles (later King Charles VII) and declared that she would free the city of Orleans from his English enemies and lead him to his coronation. Shortly after fulfilling both prophesies, she was captured by the English, who tried her for heresy and burned her at the stake. In 1455, 24 years after her death, a new trial concluded that the English inquisition was improperly conducted and nullified its decision. Throughout their descriptions of these events, the authors draw upon copious letters and trial transcripts to present a vivid portrait of the young woman whose intelligence, courage, determination and unshakable faith astonished all of Europe. A brief introduction and a section of profiles of the major players make this thorough book accessible to the general reader. Though the writing is sometimes dry, Pernoud and Clin do an admirable job of bringing clarity to their complicated subject. This is the first English translation of a book published in 1986 in France. 12 illustrations, 8 maps.

This important and useful book is part biography and part reference work. On one level, it is the first English translation of a best-selling French biography now considered the standard in the field. Nontraditional in design, it traces the appearance of Joan as a documented historical character rather than adhering to a standard chronological sequence. Informing the narrative is a novel interpretation of Joan as a political prisoner. Moving beyond the narrative, the American translator (history, Southern Methodist Univ.) has added a series of appendixes containing valuable contextual material : maps, an annotated bibliography, a chronology and itinerary of Joan's life, a series of letters to which she affixed her signature, and three historical review sections. These materials discuss key historical events, provide biographical information on Joan's contemporaries, and discuss Joan's afterlife in history, literature, folklore, art, and iconography. Good, easy to understand reading.

Great for our Camp Memaw and Grandaddy a la Knights earlier this summer. Our five year old and only granddaughter adopted this book straight away after she came to camp declaring that she wanted to be the very character of Joan of Arc!

One of the Best Books on the Subject!

Not much can be added to the previous reviews. I would highlight the point that it would be wise to read the forward and preface before getting stuck into the book. The layout of the book is somewhat different to your normal biography but in this case it works well. The story is excellent and is well presented and as mentioned by other reviews without any noticeable bias either way. The authors have produced a gripping and entertaining story and have also provided the reader with some detailed lists of principal characters, issues and images and appendices that have copies of some letters written by `Joan of Arc'. The list of characters was very detailed and makes the book a must have for any decent library. Overall this is a very well researched account of this amazing woman and the story was a joy to read. Recommend to anyone who loves good history.

An excellent biography

Not written in the standard chronology, from birth to death, but as she appears in the history through her's and others correspondence. Since she was only on the scene for about 2 years this is a good way of presenting her life. A large cast of characters is presented and flipping back and forth between the narrative and the micro-biographies is often required. Even still, it is difficult to keep in mind all the different family relationships and how it affected the characters actions. I throughly enjoyed her story and its presentation. The only flaw I found was not much was presented about her future canonization which I would have liked a little more indepth discussion.

Showed Me That Wesley Was An Ascetic

Wesley wasn't a "mystic," but an ascetic. He was influenced by ascetic treatises such as William Law's A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life, A Practical Treatise Upon Christian Perfection, Jeremy Taylor's Rules and Exercises for Holy Living, and especially Thomas a Kempis' The Imitation of Christ. He was also impacted by Francois Fenelon's Letters.

The most "mystic" he got was Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God.

He was deeply impressed by the ascetic piety of the Life of Monsieur de Renty and the Life of Gregory Lopez.

Wesley rejected "the mystical means of solitude, darkness, and contemplation" (p. 151). He was not a Christian mystic.

However, he was open to dreams, the voice of God, visions, healing, and deliverance. There is plenty of evidence of this in his Journal and Works; see Daniel Jennings' The Supernatural Occurrences of John Wesley.

I was disappointed about how anti-mystical Wesley was. No favorable reference to mystical theology. But what I did find helpful was his spiritual discernment. He rejected mystical heresies, and that helped me to sift through the "mystical dross" and pursue the "mystical gold". With Wesley, I choose to reject all the Christian mystics he rejected himself (William Law (UNIVERSALISM), Theologia Germanica (PANTHEISM?), John Tauler (universalist?), Jacob Boehme (GNOSTICISM?), Meister Eckhart (pantheism?), Henry Suso (pantheism?), Jan van Ruysbroeck (pantheist and universalist?), Nicolas Malebranche (?) (Tuttle, pp. 115, 117, 77, 78, 128).

Deliberate, unfailingly polite Wall Street banker John Putnam Thatcher (Right on the Money, 1993, etc.) is built more for endurance than speed, and his 24th appearance is another thoroughly absorbing business-based puzzler. Wealthy divorcee Madeleine Underwood is a latter-day Carrie Nation, except that her cause is watered down. She's going after a nonalcoholic brew called Quax, which she and other members of her grassroots organization, NOBBY (No Beer Buying Youngsters), are convinced will nudge America's youth down the slippery slope toward alcoholism. With characteristic lack of judgment, Underwood commits NOBBY to an ill-advised lawsuit filed by the family of a dead teen. She makes unsubstantiated claims before a congressional committee and leads the charge against Rugby's, a popular family restaurant that has decided to carry Quax. Since Rugby's owner is a client of his bank, Thatcher is more than mildly interested when he stumbles upon Underwood inciting NOBBY members to violence in front of one of the chain's new restaurants. Several days later, Underwood is found murdered beneath a table at the congressional hearings. Suspects, of course, are rampant, and it takes Thatcher's calm ponderings to find the killer. The team that writes as Lathen does a superior job of portraying business in a savvy way?cynical in all the right places and raising interesting issues about organizations that seek to limit adult freedoms under the guise of protecting children.

It was OK but not one of her best

I thought there were too many characters and the story rambled on over the same ground. In addition, this story had too little emphasis on high finance which is always my favourite area. I felt after I read it that this story could have been about widgets and it would have made no real difference.

I have read all Emma Lathen's books and have just finished this one. It is fun, but I missed some of her usual characters - Tom Robichaux, Everett Gabler and Walter Bowman in particular. However, the plot was tight and altogether a good read

The impossibly glamorous life of the beloved revolutionary martyr Che Guevara is extolled but not illuminated in this glitzy hagiography. The authors sketch the outlines of Guevara's tumultuous life-his youthful motorcycle journeys among Latin America's downtrodden masses, his rise as Fidel Castro's co-comandante, his incongruous stint as Cuba's Minister of Industry and Central Bank chief, his return to guerilla adventures in disastrous forays to the Congo and Bolivia (where he was executed)-but tell the story mostly through interviews with Guevara's comrades and snippets of his writings. The book is dominated by hundreds of photos of Guevara, usually in beret and fatigues, which ably convey the smoldering charisma-"he was very masculine, with beautiful eyes," pants one compañera-that has made him the universal symbol of left-wing defiance on posters, T-shirts and murals throughout the world. Unfortunately, the book's devotional tone does little to establish Guevara as a serious political figure. Readers learn of his chess skills and his kindness to lepers, but next to nothing about the organization of the Cuban Revolution. Guevara's quixotic economic policies are largely glossed over with photos of him harvesting sugar cane to promote his scheme of replacing wages with "voluntary work" and "moral incentives." The excerpts of his own writings, which are studded with bad poetry ("In the mouth of the finale, you can hear valor fly") and grand self-encomiums ("The only passion which guides me is for the truth"), betray nothing more reflective than an idealized faith in the people and an enthusiasm for armed struggle. Adult/High School—This small, chunky coffee-table book is a photo biography of the charismatic revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara. End sheets provide a time line of highlights in his life from birth in 1928 to the 1997 transfer of his remains to Santa Clara, Cuba. More than 100 of the subject's quotations are sprinkled throughout, providing Che's opinions on such topics as truth, moral incentives, love, and youth. Previously unpublished interviews with the subject's friends and political allies provide some depth. The interview with Albert Ganado, motorcycle travel companion of his youth, gives a glimpse into Che the friend. Interviews with Colonel Alberto Castellanos and Colonel Oscar Fernandez Mel give pictures of the Cuban revolutionary. The interview with Ulises Estrado Lescaille covers the era of the man as international freedom fighter. The last chapter, "Legend," includes many paintings, posters, and even products, including cigarettes, wine, tote bags, and the ubiquitous T-shirts. The man who said "The people's heroes cannot be separated from the people, cannot be elevated onto a pedestal, into something alien to the lives of that people…" is ironically very much an icon on a pedestal. Little information but lots of pics

Little information for people that think the world of Che. However there are a couple interesting interviews with people that knew him and fought with him. Plus there are lots of pics that are published for the first time! I give it 4 stars because I would of loved more interviews and information. However the pics were appreciated :)

Lots of photos

This book is a photo album of the very photogenic Che Guevara. It has some information beside the photos, and also a few interviews with people close to Che, but the main point of this book is to present the photos. This book has many photos, of Che in his youth, family life, and during his travels. It also has images of Che as an icon with examples of International art work showing how recognisable his face is even today.
The entire book is 430 pages long with photos on every page, but is small in size.
If you are looking for a detailed informative book into Che's life, then this is not the book for you. However, if you want a quick simple read of his life as told in photos, then you could spend hours pouring over this and will not be disappointed.
